Nice video In UK we have similar choices except our solid fuel stove has fuel that is odourless !! It's military issue and comes with a windshield m as well, I got it with a pack of fuel for about $7. I like your straight forward style, tight lines
Hi there from Switzerland .. A nice Posting .. thanks. I have, and still use regularly, a foldable Esbit Stove (original personal military issue) from the early 70's. Whilst I have Solid Fuel Tabs as backup, I normally use 'Sicherheitsbrennpasta' (Gel Fuel) .. far cheaper and more available than the Tabs. Table Top Cheese Fondues are a National Sport in this neck of the Woods .. thus the Gel Fuel is stocked everywhere. Little Aluminium Windscreens that slot into the sides of the Stove complete the Setup. Keep them coming please .. take care .. The Stove also works well with little home-made alcohol burners
I find wood stoves to be the most enjoyable. However I tend to use alcohol stoves when I need a reliable method. Never liked solid fuel stoves and shockingly iv never actually used a small gas stove.
The cheapest to buy and it's also the lightest one, is a wood stove, that fits around the German mess kit. It costs less than 5$ and it feels like a feather. Of course, you don't have to use it only with a German mess kit if you don't like that kit. After that, I like the folding stoves, like the 2nd on this video. That's because, of the versatily. You can use the tablets, or you simply put some small branches in, and you'are cooking!!
Always enjoy ur videos!! I would probably put the Firebox Nano in steel as the #1 budget stove for me. It can be a wood stove, u can use budget solid fuels and can be a stand for the budget alcohol stove. I got mine for $40 on sale and with that functionality, u can't beat it
The wood gasifier stoves work well in conjunction with alcohol and solid fuel as well. In fact they shield the flame although a wind screen is needed to concentrate the flames outside against the pot. I have experimented extensively with wind screens and found aluminum flashing with crumpled then flattened aluminum foil stapled inside extending at least a couple of inches above the bottom of the pot an inch around the outside of the stove wall works well, concentrating the heat against the pot. The bottom can be open below the flame or long enough to sit on the ground. I cut in tabs to hold it against the stove at the seam. The crumpled aluminum keeps the heat from radiation loss through the flashing. The flashing rolls tightly against the stove when stored in the bag. I don’t know what you use for a wind screen but I’d like to see. Perhaps do a boil time video without and with various configurations for a comprehensive comparison.
In place of the UST stove I got one of the Bushcraft Multi Fuel Cookers. It can take either solid fuel or the Alcohol gel and some liquid fuels. I customized mine with some JB Weld in the corners of the fuel tray to make sure it was leak proof. Then I added 5 strips of Carbon felt , 1/4 thick , 2.3/4 inches long and 1 inch wide. It 's placed lengthwise in the fuel tray. I add denatured alcohol to it and with the tray open to the 1st click it is perfect for my canteen cup. The cup is placed lengthwise over the carbon felt wick for the best heating. It weighs 11 grams and is $7.50 on Amazon and they include a clip on wind break for one side of the cooker.
The UST Stove also fits a UST SparkForce with the fuel tabs. And you can cut small wind screen sections from an aluminum can that fit right inside too. A very complete system.
Ernie I have and love all of those stoves. I will say the the UST stove with the fuel squares also works great burning twigs when you run out of fuel cubes. Thanks for sharing brother.
@@thangtrinh3237 The UST stove is a folding stove made to burn fuel tablets and will also burn sticks. It is NOT an alcohol stove. However you can set your Trangia type alcohol stove inside the UST and use the UST as a pot stand.
I have the woodstove and use a computer exhaust fan grill for a grill on mine and with the legs broken off fits inside the body and fits nicely between the outstretched supports. This rests very securely for grilling.
I broke the little flipper off my wood stove like yours . I had a 8qt cast iron pot on it full of chili prolly a little to much weight maybe . I do have the other model also which is a lot stronger . I think I'm going to go with STG stove this spring . good luck with the fishing
Solid fuel stove is more like $12 now. You can use it as a wood stove, too. The Owahu Wood stove is an awesome choice. Either Lixada's aftermarket grill for about $7 or a computer fan screen work nicely as grates and will probably work with the solid fuel stove if you open it up to right angles.
HI Ernie. I have most of these stoves. What would the operating difference be on the alcohol stove if you just used the bottom section of the soda can w/o the inverted section you jb welded?
When I want a cheap fast stove I use my scout knife to turn a coffee can into a great wood stove. When I want a rock solid winter stove, I grab my original MSR.
Nice video

Wind screen, aluminum foil, cheep, light, works great. I’ve used it for decades.
Ive got to knock the soild fuel stoves. You get a few boils but cant really use them after you run out of fuel. Tabs are great for starting fire tho.

It's 3am, I live in the city and I've never been hiking. I'm not sure how I got here but thank you for the video.

We appreciate your videos Ernie. Can’t be easy being a doctor and family man and making UA-cam videos for use. 👍🔥🥓
$6 if your into tablet fuel it’s worth the purchase alone for the 8 tabs
Love budget stoves man. Thanks for putting in the work Ernie. It’s appreciated bro
the fold out solid fuel stove from wal mart, I cut the bottom out of it and refit this for my trangia alcohol stove , with wind screen it works great
Thanks for the quality content. However my wife hates it when UA-camrs use the phrase "just like that". So please continue to say it.
Solid fuel stove fuel tabs smell toxic and even worse when burning and also soot up your pot real bad. My experience.
Alcohol Stove? Fancee Feest only...from Zelph Himself.
Have to track the Ohuhu vid down .Mine has the grate and the alcohol tray . You should test the tray .
I know the BRS is popular and, I do own one, but there are better stoves for just a little more.

I made a pot stand/ solid fuel stove from a stainless steel water bottle. Definitely a solid contender in my kit!
I have the ohuhu wood twig stove and highly recommend it, I keep mine in a MSR 750 ml pot with wood pellets inside for emergency fuel
Awesome video, Ernie! Love your selections!
never tried a solid fuel. gonna give it a try after watching this. as usual, great info. thanks doc.

Good video 👍 keep them coming good job 🙂👍
A crazy amount of info crammed into a 10 minute package!! Loved it! What kinda fishing are you doing? I’d love to see some fishing 🎣 + hiking 🥾 video.
😂” I’m gonna get back to fishing and feeling sorry for myself”, good one. On a serious note nice video, it’s very encouraging and eye opening.👍🏽

So you can also use the UST alcohol stove as a wood stove ? How good is it as a wood stove tho, is wind going to be a problem ? Thank you

@@chiefkirk Ah yeah I usually call it an alcohol stove because in my country these fuel tablets called solid alcohol lol, thanks btw

Stoves are very inexpensive or even free, but the cookware isn't! That's unless you figure out how to make some for yourself.
Do you know of any trails to hike across Louisiana? I’d love to find one in shape of an L, to help bring awareness to autoimmune disorders/diseases
Love the selection of stoves, thanks
You should've showed us what it looks like with them running so we can get an idea
Thanks for another great informative video
Sounds like my fishing trips
