    When I first learned Hong Kong mahjong some years ago, I was taught that if I can only play one suit at a time meaning I'm not allowed to mix the suits in one game. Also, once I've decided on which suit to play, I must decide on whether I want to chi or pong with that suit as I can only choose one or the other. This forces the player to stratagise from the start by observing the tiles discarded from the other players and also to mask their own moves and try to mislead others.

    Question: When someone makes a 'pong', they discard a tile so they have 13 again. Now, is it still their turn? Or is it the person on the right's turn now?
    Also, my set doesn't have animal tiles :/ do you need the animal tiles and flowers to play this style?
    Very nice video! Looking forward to seeing the scoring system video!

    • @MrMojojojojojojo
      @MrMojojojojojojo 3 роки тому +1

      To answer your question, once a player calls a pong and throws his tile, it’s the next person’s turn (the one on his right). Animal tiles are only applicable for singaporean style mahjong; most mahjong styles do not have animal tiles, so unless you want to play singaporean rules, it is okay if your set does not have them.

      Thanks! Usually a box of mahjong there could be 4 blanks, 4 clown and 4 red chinese character 'fei' tiles. They are used like a wild card, they can be any card. They can act as any card apart from animal and flower tiles. It is illegal to discard them while playing. Depending on the house rules, often these tiles are not included when playing.

      1. The animal and flowers tile are for points (which will be explained further in future videos)

    Is this the same as Hong Kong style Mah Jong? I am trying to learn the scoring. I know most how to play but scoring is the last thing I need to learn after 25 years of playing! My parent say words like 'chicken' score etc.. what are they all?

      Sorry I am not very sure how Hong Kong style Mahjong works!
      There are 4 animals in a deck, chicken is one of them. You get a point for every animal you draw

      The chicken hand is the lowest value hand you can get. It's usually worth zero 番 but on maque.games it's actually worth 1 番! It's a mixture of triplets and sequences of different suits with no pattern nor consistency.

    can i play mahjong without the animal tiles?

    • @mahjong1019
      @mahjong1019  4 роки тому +1

      Its better to have the animal tiles. But without them is fine too, all the players will have to build 18 stacks in their wall instead of 19-18-19-18

    What happens if I draw a flower tile during the gameplay ?
    Do I reveal it and draw another one from the flower pile or do I have to keep it in my hand??

      You have to reveal and place it in front of your hand.

    Question, if blank tiles can be any characters then why is it illegal to throw or desricard in the game?

    • @mahjong1019
      @mahjong1019  4 роки тому

      Well, if you think of it from a logical perspective. If you throw a tile that can be anything, doesn't it mean that anyone can 'pong' and this will disrupt the game flow (as there is one additional tile on the floor). Furthermore, this go against "pong" rule which states that anyone can "pong" regardless of who threw it

      @@mahjong1019 thank you for answering. But why do we have a blank tile what for and does it even have points too?

      @@jawseasharkypilapil2265 that depends. Some mahjong set use blank tile as the white dragon (bai ban), while some use it as a joker
