Wow, Mondo does a really good job with camera work. I find myself getting lost when I watch other televised tournaments, but showing the player draw their tile and then showing their hand really clears things up. I still have to watch the video at .75 speed though.
The English version of the World Riichi Championship rule book calls it a "Chow". "Chii" only refers to the call made to make a "Chow" (In Japanese and English). I personally just call it a sequence.
Sweet! First time watching something like this. It was a bit hard to follow at first, but I got the hang of it after a while. Very thrilling, unexpectedly. xD
The tiles have magnetic backs, qnd those work with the mechanics under the table mat to shuffle, build and send walls. There are two sets of tiles in play so that when one game is done, the table can send the next wall to play while shuffling the just finished tiles. I believe there's a video about the table in UA-cam.
for E3 (1), the reason for not riichi is not just waiting for a ryanmen. Usually this is not advisable since drawing in the winning tile via riichi is more effective. In this scenerio it is because of having that ankou 2p, which made her odds of improving wait a lot more, which is 25p, 358m for tanyao. This is the more desirable draw as it fix your hand at tanyao instead of cheapen it upon drawing 9m or 1m. She is most likely to riichi if the 2p ankou is not there.
Yes. Rules link is in the video description. Nuance compared to the Chinese versions: 13 orphans and 9 lanterns only need to form the total shape to win.
16:20 "The harder they [hands] are to complete, the more points they score" This is often not true. Mentanpin dora1 = 7700. Open chanta sanshoku = 2000. I enjoy playing Riichi quite a bit but I have to be honest to myself: The scoring is quite screwy. I think kuisagari is unnecessary (there are so many other demerits for opening the hand already).
I think they just meant that, for the most part, if one yaku occurs less frequently than another then it's given a higher value. Obviously this is not 100% accurate; for example, chiitoi is quite common but sankantsu is very rare and they're both worth 2 han. However, as a general rule of thumb it's fine.
Hello! I sent you an email about potentially licensing some of this footage for a documentary. Can you please let me know if you received it? Thank you!! 🙏✨
Can I have this video withour the english commentary?? I think I understand more japanese than english native speaker speaking.. english speaker are too fast..
@@Ejohrik I can get pretty obsessive about this type of details, so as a viewer I agree that it's a little frustrating. But as you say a simple gesture like turning some tiles would give HUGE hints to your opponents and you'd want to avoid that at all costs, especially in a professional tournament!
That's a typical Japanese style set. 25*18mm. I know Amos makes good Japanese sets in Japan. The same company that makes automatic tables in Japan. Not sure about how easy they are to get abroad. Here in Sweden we don't really have many choices when it comes to Mahjong-related stuff, so I had to buy my set while in China. It's somewhere inbetween the small Japanese pieces and the typical big Chinese pieces. I wish it was Japanese sized, but I take what I can get.
They seem usual Japanese tiles, they are smaller than Chinese sets. I have a Japanese set that looks very similar to the one used here and tiles are 25x18mm
Wow at the commentary. So lousy. Kurosawa Saki and Nikaido Rumi are very decorated female pros and have won championships (Pro Queen) which are more prestigious than Mondo.
Lame. Where are the players who can see the future, or who are possessed by the Shinto pantheon, or get powered up by eating tacos, or curse people, or can get whatever tile they want without effort, or can make a rinshan kaihou at will, crushing everyone's dreams in order to confront her big sister?
I've had better commentary from a weeb living with his mother playing waifujongs, and a fishmonger who has two cats and gets far too excited when he gets an ippatsu (一発)
The English-speaking community always wants more of this!
English commentary?! Amazing! Have wanted something like this for years! I won't miss a single one~
Japanese mahjong will take a step further in spreading over the world thanks to this ! Thank you so much !
Professional Mahjong with English commentary!!!!! SO much Hype~ I look forward to seeing more videos like this.
I know it's not a recent video, but it makes me incredibly happy to see English commentaries of riichi mahjong tournaments!
Thank you very much for this commentary session. I, as I imagine many others too, enjoy this english interest over riichi.

Thank you for the English commentary! Looking forward to future English content!
I have been waiting for the English commentary!Thank You!
Thanks for the broadcast in English.
these tiles were made for TV, the light shines so good on them..
I'd love to see more of this!
Love hearing some English commentary, although personally, I'd have preferred they used the Japanese terms for suits, yaku and so on.
Personally I don't mind the English terminology, but dangit it's "chii" not "chow"!
Completely agree, it's Japanese Mahjong after all.
NNNNN I
nice profile pic

I realy hope, that there will be more of these.
Awesome. I randomly looked this up and see an English commentary Mahjong event. Can't wait to learn.
Like this if Yakuza video game brought you here.
100% improvised commentary, wow!

Hey MONDO TV. More of this please; or even just english subtitles would be fine!
Please release more Mahjong with english commentary.
interesting ! now I must begin to practice mahjong..
Holy crap! Those tables actually exist!! I was sure it was just an anime thing, I mean, how does that even work?!
anime is real life

The anime is kakegurui.

Yakuza got me into Riichi Mahjong.
Thank you, I appreciate this
The mind games take shape very quickly if you happen to play with the same people over and over again, even if you're not a pro, it's pretty fun
awesome
I love these two commentators. A lot of Akagi references.
12:47 damn that table is so cool
"Why didn't she riichi" probably because she's negative XD
Why were almost all of the games with blue tiles skipped?
more english broadcasts please
涼崎 amazing chitoitsu doing a come back to the game
As someone who is very new to competitive mahjong, can someone explain why it's split into men's and women's leagues?
Misogyny
Did they ever do any more english? ):
can you win with a seven pair hand in japanese mahjong. ?
Yes, as long as it is 7 distinct pairs.
TrollOf Nova how about orphans hand

why is the green dragon not green? could someone explain?
modern set manufacturers usually save money by not using green for the green dragons and the bamboo tiles, so they use black instead
How much is ur mahjong table?
Anyone knows the size and brand for this tile set?
how can I watch this without the english casters?
What is the tile set used? Can I buy some like this one?
Hello! I sent you an email about potentially licensing some of this footage for a documentary. Can you please let me know if you received it? Thank you!! 🙏✨
20:43 Kai from Makoubuchi
Anyone know the tile size being used?
Can I have this video withour the english commentary?? I think I understand more japanese than english native speaker speaking.. english speaker are too fast..
This was specifically done in English for the non Japanese speaking audience.
I love mahjong
It really makes me upset when I see the tiles upside-down. :(
Turning the tiles could give away that your tiles are not haku, 1pin, 8pin, etc. :P

Are tenpai hands getting scored after a winning hand? Is that a special ruleset or is that how its meant to be played?
I wish the game had red doras.
Podrían colocar subtítulos en español para los jugadores latinoamericanos de Mah Jong, gracias 🙏 🌎 🌏
What mahjong set are they using? That tile size is exactly what I'm looking for. Any help is appreciated.

@@Ejohrik thanks for the help!
Not sure where you're located. In the US I got a nice set that looks about like this at Barnes and Noble. One of their Classic Games collection.
It's funny how around 39:00 look like everyone has a red dragon and they still waiting
What size tiles are these? Any help is appreciated and thank you.
They seem usual Japanese tiles, they are smaller than Chinese sets. I have a Japanese set that looks very similar to the one used here and tiles are 25x18mm
the pale pink background to the set gives this show a very "on in the background at the nursing home" vibe
I get more of a "fake tv show in a tv show" vibe tbh
So obviously you guys have every ryu ga Gotoku plat.
It's fun having English commentary until one of them can't tell the difference between rii-nomi and a mangan
How many of these woman have watched Saki (the tv show), do you think?
Wow at the commentary. So lousy. Kurosawa Saki and Nikaido Rumi are very decorated female pros and have won championships (Pro Queen) which are more prestigious than Mondo.
thanks to the yakuza for making me watch this
Akagi
hmm hm hmm nango san....
Y dont they pong or eat anything
That might reduce their hand while they can draw it themselves, if they really need it, they can always pon
