"when you are 11 you feel older" That's so true. When I was 13 I felt more adult than I do now being twice as old :D
I don't think I have any pictures of my diagnosis, March 2005. I had been sick for a while and kept going to doctors and no one did a finger prick, just called it the flu and sent me home. I was 12 and maybe 50lbs, ended up being diagnosed by the paramedics, was life flighted to a hospital, spent over a week in ICU. They told is later that I wouldn't have lives another 24 hours, I had three IVs in, and I was unconscious for most of it. I remember getting out of bed for the first time and almost falling because my legs were so weak. And apparently the whole time I was in the bed the nurses were trying to figure out how long my hair was because it was in a braid down my back and I was just laying on it. Showering for the first time, I remember how nice that was!
I love looking at mine from when I was 5 😊😊 I'm coming up on my 11th diaversary in October
I too was diagnosed at 11. I'm 62 and in good heath. My Dexcom has helped tremendously. I'm still taking injections manually because i work in the field and a pump would get pulled off.
Mike B really i still have hope
i guess I'm quite randomly asking but does anyone know of a good place to watch new series online?
@Lance Westin i use flixzone. You can find it on google :)
The old photo quality is surprisingly good.
Happy Diaversary!!! My one year Diaversary is coming up on October 9th!
+MeaganManiac 82104 thanks good luck to you too!
Oh shoot. I forgot those were a thing...
I'm so happy to have found your channel. I was just diagnosed a few months ago, and I absolutely love your tips and knowledge. It's really helped me understand a whole lot more :).
Happy Diaversary Danica! I think I'm kind of glad there are no pictures of my diagnosis 17 years ago, when I was 6. Or at least I don't know of any :P
I don't remember my diagnosis...I was 2 1/2... I love looking at the stuff my mom kept though. All the charts and educational stuff that we had to teach the teachers.
Although I'm not a diabetic, I remember when my mom was diagnosed with t1 when I was younger. I don't remember seeing her in the hospital but I remember when she came home. I make her a marshmallow cake in my easy-bake-oven, and I vividly remember being upset when she couldn't eat it.
Hey Danica, I'm 17 and have been diagnosed for 8 years. I've been subscribed to you for a while but just now saw this video. So much of what you said felt very similar to my diagnosis and your job and goals for your career are actually what I hope to do too! Thank you so much for your videos! They are very helpful and encouraging to me, someone who doesn't have any diabetics around her. This has been an absolute blessing to my night.
Thank you so much for these videos. My 4 year old son was diagnosed 6 months ago and my husband has been a diabetic since he was 6 26 years ago. It's just nice to know we are not the only ones going through this. all the best xx
I was twelve when I passed out in maths class (1970). No pictures of me, but I was a tiny, skinny twelve year old boy. They told my parents I would be lucky to live to thirty! I turned 60 in January. :) I love your videos! btw I am an RN as well :)
It felt that way for me when diagnosed with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy
You have came a long way, and even though i am a complete stranger I am very proud of you and impressed with your journey with diabetes. I was same age as you when diagnosed in 1978. I still learn something from all your videos, thank you!
Aw, thank you!!
Hey just came across your channel. My daughter who is 11 was just diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in March 2020. It's been 2 months . She ended up in the children's hospital.
Im glad you are ok now it's life changing
Happy diaversary!!!! I will be celebrating 26 amazing years of diabetes on October 10th!!!! I wish I could remember what my diagnosis was like... Imagine that back in 1990 we had to stay for a whole month in the hospital but I was only 2,5 years old at the time and my parents did not take any photos therefore I have no recollection...
It is always a great pleasure to watch your videos and see what it is like to live with diabetes in America... Keep up the good work and never lose your positivity!!! Much love from Greece!!!!
aww thats awesome Danica!, so happy for you!
You are amazing! So optimistic & knowledgeable. I didn’t know you’re a nurse! Brava!
I was diagnosed when I was 28 years old. So strange how you were only 11 and you have so many memories of those 3 days. I will be a diabetic 20 years in July, my daughter's 24th birthday. And to be honest I really don't have a memory of when I was diagnosed . You are quite an amazing young lady. And I want you to know that I appreciate you so much. Last year I was trying to figure out if I was going to get on an insulin pump and you helped me. Because of and your beautiful energy about the pump I decided to do it. Thank you so much. And think about this... your Mama was taking care of you in the beginning of your journey and my four-year-old was taking care of me at the beginning of my journey. God bless you sweet girl and again thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the information you put out there. Please never stop with the information because you helped so many people.
Rae Ann Sanchez
Happy Doubleday , mine was August 7, mine is 7 years!
My 8th Diaversary coming up November 4! It's crazy! Happy Diaversary Danica! I always look up to you love ya lots girl!
Thanks, Elyse!
I was diagnosed at 6 years old!! You really encourage me, I really want to be a nurse, and progressed to be a CDE
Happy diaversary!!! Cool thing to me is were were diagnosed 1 year apart 😄❤️
I love your optimistic view about diabetes, God bless you !
I didn't let my mom take so many picture because I was really scared and didn't know what to do. But now i regret it. Because now i want to look at the good and not so bad times about my diagnoses. And happy diaversary DiabeticDanica [even if it was a week ago and good luck].
Wow... So happy your goal is a Diabetes Educator. I love that my educator is also Type 1 and she really gets it! Education is so vitally important and when I was diagnosed 22 years ago (49 now) I was given a bunch of videos and told to go home , watch these vids and take your shots... Unbelievable to me now that this happened. Sad to say my older brother was also a Type 1 so I was fully aware what was happening to me. Thank you for your contribution to UA-cam and educating ALL on diabetes :)
Yeah it just can't be fully learned in a couple of days!
I think it's ironic that you have to go to school for years to become a diabetes educator, to take care of other people with diabetes, but apparently, the hospital thought that three days was enough time for you to learn to take care of your own diabetes.
Another Adult onset Type 1 at age 30. The education was horrible, (it's been over 25 years now!) Spent more time talking about types of sugars and salt. Nothing about meters or whats the correct target range. I learned more from Danica in her videos than most of the education. Everybody assumes that you learned the current stuff since you have it for so long. But that's far from true.
here's several tips to try
have 1 meal per day containing bitter melon
tender mango leaves tea
eat bitter gourd regularly it contains an insulin type chemical
(I learned these and why they work from Ralfs Remedy Method website )

Happy Diaversary! I was diagnosed on my 3rd bday in 1995. No pictures lol that's okay with me I don't want to remember.
Hi Danica, have you ever had diabetic ketoacidosis? What symptoms did you have if so? Also do you get any side effects such as weight gain or eyesight problems from the insulin infusion?
If my dad said he had a surprise for me, I always imagine it being a new toy.
Happy Diaversary Danica! I love your attitude and outlook on life! I've been T1D since 1989, diagnosed when I was ~24. I tell people for me it's not a disease, its a lifestyle! ☺️ Thanks for your positive videos and stay awesome!
yes I like her outlook on life 2 I'm glad I found her videos I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes back in 2011 and Danica through her videos has been very inspiring to me and giving me a better perspective of what it is to live with diabetes.
How many precent get diagnosis after they are 18 years old?
+Idellle i don't know the percent, but I was diagnosed at 35 and a half. i just turned 37.
Carrie Reed
how is it possible.. :/ (getting paranoid)
You can get diagnosed with t1d at any age because its an autoimmune disease. I already have the genetics for deceloping diabetes in my family but I have 4 other autoimmune disorders which killed off insulin production.
I didn't let my mum take any pictures of me when I was diagnosed but I wish she did because it was a really big thing for me
It's pretty cool to look back! I could see not wanting any though :)

Thank u so much I suffer from paranoia depression and anxiety and I suspect diabetes so all those 4 cons destroy me and I have symptoms I’m more afraid of the risk of amputations but thx to u I feel more strong and able to fight this once I’m able to get it checked :)
I was diagnosed earlier this year in September at 17. The nurses I had were nice but the doctor they had was terrible. In 2017 he was still having patients do NPH with syringes and vials. No pens, no pumps, the guy was so old fashion that no one there even talked about more recent stuff. Luckily my school nurse, after my mom told her I was diagnosed, recommended us to a new doctor who is very up to date, got me on pens instantly and then a pump barely 4 months later. Good thing too, since because of the first doctor I was having lows almost non-stop since he also never explained to us what we were supposed to do about meals.
Happy diavercery! Mine is in March and will be my 13th. I get one special month where my age and time I've had diabetes is the same, I think its cool.
Thank you for sharing this. God bless
I remember what you were talking about when getting home from the hospital to, even after 38 years of the curse.
Paul has gloves on too in the pic of y'all leaving! I love your videos!
I noticed that when I was editing! Thanks! :D
I was 12. In 1998 we spent weeks in hospital. I was there 3 weeks. So crazy. I also was on r and n and took two shots a day and had to eat 3 meals and 3 snacks. So thankful for lantus and rapid. I am also a nurse now
So amazing how far its come!
Cool video!
I got type 1 when I was 8 years old, but I didn't have to stay in the hospital. I did miss a lot of 2nd grade though.
I was diagnosed when I was 12 i think. There are no pictures to look back on but maybe thats a good thing, but I enjoyed your story.
I was 32 when I got diagnosed that was pretty scary. I cannot imagine what it is like at 11. You handled it probably alot better than I would have. I am deathly afraid of needles though I have gotten better now since ummm....... but anyway Me getting shots was a nightmare for all parties involved when I was little (annual vaccinations) So bravo! You took it like a champ at least they didn't have to pin you down You have been and will always be an inspiration for me. if it wasn't for your videos I would probably be still on shots. :)
27th August 2017 will be my 10th Diaversary! 😮 love your channel!
Happy Diaversary Danica!!!! On September 17 2016 will be my 7th Diaversary
What symptoms did you have when you were first diagnosed with diabetes?
sorry this is so late. i had frequent urination, headaches
happy diaversary
wow you were such a beautiful little girl now you are a pretty looking attractive young woman thanks for sharing with us I really enjoyed watching it's kind of funny though I remember when I was first diagnosed I don't remember the exact day for everyone else who reads this comment I want to clarify though I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes I was diagnosed back in 2011 although my diabetes has progressed in the beginning I was just on one or medication now I take to oral medications along with insulin.
Happy diaversiry 😊😊😊
When i was in the hospital i actually liked it, i dont know why but i thought of it as a five star hotel.when i took a shower they put a glove where my IV was . that was fun.....Have a happy day Danica!
Thanks a lot for this interesting video!
Why did you have an iv?
I was diagnosed when I was 4
Wow @DiabeticDanica ... I wish or do I? That I could remember so much in detail when I got diagnosed. I was only 5 going on 6 when they discovered I was T1D back in the 60's. I just remember being with a group of old farts (like I am now) since it was a hospital room with 4 beds... and probably they were T2D since I was on the diabetic ward. They thought I was cute, and I could climb over the bars of the bed (no IV for me thank goodness) during the night when they were sleeping, and sneakily slip into the kitchen across from our room (and nibble on Jello that I discovered in the fridge). I'll have to ask my Dad how long I was there, I thought it was a week or two ... but I was too little. Just remember when my Mum came to visit (she didn't drive) after my Dad finished work, practising on an orange for my eventual injections. Ahhh, you've brought up some fun memories here!
2018 will be my half life diabetic and half not, was diagnosed July 31 2000, couple months after graduation and my birthday.
A Story for You.
My experience was similar. At age 16 I was diagnosed and admitted to the hospital, new wing of the hospital and I was at the opposite end far from the elevators. Like you I wore glasses. Second day after starting insulin I put my glasses on and WOOOW, could not focus on anything. Took glasses off and viewed down that long hall and could read every floor the elevator was travelling. Doctor explained changes in osmotic pressure of the eye did that and that it was temporary. In 4 days I was wearing my glasses again.
My father asked Dr Peterson what kind of prognosis for the disease. Dr Peterson said maybe 20 years. I have now had diabetes for 52 years and in excellent health.
Your doing an excellent job having diabetes for 52 years. 👍 My Mom diagnosed me when I was 8 yrs old & back then it was called Junivillle diabetes & today its type 1. I've had type 1 for 62 yrs now & worked full time for 42 yrs & retired 3 yrs ago and am now 70 yrs old in very good health. Thank Goodness for my Mom diagnose me and she was wonderful always with those glass syringes & metal needles giving me and my brother who was age 4 when he was diagnosed type 1 also. My sister diagnosed at age 27 with type 1 diabetes too. All 3 of us are still alive. When we were diagnosed there were no such things as glucose meters to check your blood sugars (glucose levels). God Bless my Mom she worked full time & took care of her 2 small diabetic children. She deserves all the credit for diagnosis of us and taking such great care of us and preparing home cooked meals always. Miss her so much , she was and always will be my Hero.🙏
Happy diaversary Danica. If I had diagnosis pictures, they would all be in a men's room at Disney World. Ahh yeah good times.
hahaha
at Disney world lol that's hilarious and different hang in there!
Not to tack on to Danica's wonderful blog, but you might enjoy my funny diagnosis story. It is pretty funny. I hope you enjoy. No pictures of me.

Yayaya! tu!
I was hardly sleeping one night since I was hooked up to all of these machines while I was in the hospital when I was being diagnosed. And a nurse comes in and decides to check my blood sugar ON. MY. PINKY!!!! That was pleasant.
your welcome I have til the 14th and maybe more tests to see if I have asthma
We have the same diaversary!! Today is my 3rd!
Happy belated diaversary!
Hey you were diagnosed the year after I was! I was 10 months old though, not 11
The vivid memories of walking to the bathroom with the IV pump so relatable 😂
I love you!! ♡♡♡♡
Hello! My son was diagnosed at age 9 (8/3/12) and we also had 3 days of education. My mom noticed that he was drinking and peeing more so she checked his glucose (she's hypoglycemic) and his was 400+. So many similarities. Have you had a newly diagnosed t1d patient since becoming a nurse? Did you tell them you were also? Did you show them your AWESOME vids?
You’re kidding. Omg I got diagnosed on August 27!!
I'm getting a dexcom g5
My name is danica too!
Danica Moore so is my sister😊
I'm 9 years lol, I'll be 10 years diagnosed on March 7th
I was diagnosed December 15, 2004. This year will be my 12 year diaversary! I remember I spent my 10 year diaversary in the hospital with DKA!
I was only in DkA when diagnosed
Do you know why DKA developed? Were you stressed or did you have an infection, or was there no obvious explanation?
+SuperKillerCarter yes I had infection but know what it was or know I had it I blacked out at work and the cooks found me n I woke up inte hospital hooked to tubes n wires
+tracy Shelton I had no idea what was wrong with me the Drs. kept sending me home n passed it off as the flu 2 times and I was violently ill and somehow worked 2 half shifts for 2 weeks I became diapharetic n grey , no idea. what hit me
tracy Shelton That sounds like an experience you'd never want again! Hope you're okay presently. :)
It will be my sixth on the 9th November
My one year diaversery is March 7th 2017
Haha, I hate those hospital beds lol. I work in EMS and it's a real workout to get those beds up lol
I know you talk about your life as type 1 diabetes but I. have type 2diabetes and my Endocrinologist. took me off. of my oral meds and now I am not feeling my self get low until its too late
Wow, such a different experience everyone has. I have no pics of the experience. I don't think my Mom would have ever thought of taking pics. I didn't have an iv in at all that I remember and I pretty much had run of the hospital floor I was in. I was there for a week learning everything I needed to and getting my blood sugars "normal". I had to give myself a shot before I left the hospital. My mom also had to learn everything she needed to including giving shots. Oh and urine testing. And eventually blood glucose strips u compared to the bottle. There weren't blood glucose machines yet. My husband bought me my first one when we were engaged to be married. I remember the first time they tested my blood from my finger. It wasn't this nice little prick like we have now. Nope, it was slice your finger with this razor thing. Yuck to a young kid. I was 11 too. I've never had an insulin pump. Something I wish I could try. I had a Dexcom miraculously for the last two years but after the second one battery died in December this last year, I having new insurance, am now without that awesome piece of machinery. Having that changed my life. I do miss it. Thanks for your fun videos. I've enjoyed everyone I've seen! God bless! :)
I just had my one year on the 24 and it already feels like I've had it my whole life. It was really hard at first but now it's just normal for me.
What symptoms did you have upon diagnosis?
increased thirst, frequent urination, hunger, fatigue, headache, sleepiness, and weight loss
+Awesome Guy It makes me sad that there are people like you. We are the ones seeking attention? I think you are for commenting something like this. Grow up! I don't care I know your just some 40 something old man going around trolling every video, but there are people out there who actually take comments like this to the heart. If you don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all. You can go troll another video now. 😚👋🏻🙃
Awesome Guy How dare you say such horrendous words you cold-hearted repugnant pig. Is that you're true opinion, or are you just trying to be nasty? I'm going to guess you have no self-experience with illness. I, however, do. I am 21 and am disabled due to a boatload of illnesses, including adrenal failure, fibromyalgia syndrome, asthma, eczema, migraine, hypogonadism, peripheral neuropathy, and OCD. I do not have diabetes. However, I do know that people with diabetes are not seeking attention and that anyone with diabetes who sees your comment will probably take offence by it, and people with diabetes can become seriously unwell, so don't you dare insult illnesses and the people who suffer them, especially if you have no experience yourself. Kindly refrain from making nasty comments again, for the sake of Trinity's feelings and others, including mine.
+Awesome Guy Wow great come back 👏🏻
35 years as of August 15th.
August 27 2016 is my year and a half mark.

Omg me too it will be 14 I believe. , August 6th, but I was diagnosed again with Diabetes, but was diagnosed by 2 different Drs in a day of each other, but was sick, they sent me home for 2 weeks, they sent me home 2 weeks, make story short I went to work instead and tried to work my shift but was rushed me to the er, I was in Early stages of Dka, I was 500 the 2nd day, at work the cooks carried me to the squad to the. Hospital, , if I went home I wouldn't be telling the story, where'd you get your pancreas
neither did I I'm only 9 now I got diagnosed like what 9 8 weeks ago
