As a cuban engineer I could tell you that here in Cuba almost no private home has proper grounding. But In State properties the grounding standards are very well executed as you showed in the video. Thankyou for visiting Cuba. I hope you had a wonderfull time around here.

Actually probly can write off very little...since the main purpose is vacation...if he just went on his own without his family probly could write it all off ...have to be extra careful with write offs ..probly could write off maybe 20% of his cost none of the familys ...any UA-camrs would try to write off 100% of a trip like this woukd end up in big legal trouble at some point... especially if you are writing off multiple trips a year

@@Smart-Towel-RG-400 Is your company and tax expertise in Canada? Also, keep in mind that part of the video (and thus the income) is because it's about him on a trip with his family. That's why he also shows a lot of shots of the sights and places to visit.
Even in the USA, let's say I repair widgets, and need to travel out of state to repair them. My family could go along and stay in the hotel room that my company paid for and I can still use that room as a business expense.
There are families who make videos about travel and cruising, etc together and I'll bet they can legally expense a lot of that since it is part of what they do to make the money.
Your family's reaction is honestly the most entertaining parts of these videos.

I'd like to invite him at my home, I once recorded 100v between my desktop's case and a wet towel I put on the ground for measurement. He'd then run to look at the differential in the fuse box.

Most people travel to Cuba for the beaches, the piña coladas, the rum, the cigars.... Mehdi goes to test the power installation in the room to consider it a satisfying experience. Same as all trips. It's inspirational, because you shouldn't let anyone tell you what to do.

I love cuba. The people are seriously just the nicest people on the planet. Something that I found really interesting when visiting, is that they actually hold an annual Terry Fox run, in fact they hold the second largest one every year behind Canada's. Canada's and Cuba's history together is so strange, but resulted in a really awesome friendship

This story of Mehdi gifting his screwdriver to the technician reminds of a story that my father told. He once had been on holiday in Cuba and the air conditioning failed. The technician had no phase tester, he had to test by touching the wires by hand. So my father gifted him his phase tester which he carried with him.
Not sure if Mehdi brought his standard ltt screwdriver but he was also gifted a special Creator edition, with a custom colour instead of orange. If he gifted the creator screwdriver then that was mighty big of him!
Getting a free tool is actually a much bigger blessing than that. Given Cuba's... state, tools and parts are hard to come by (especially for places not in Havana) so getting a tool is oftentimes something to celebrate... or exchange it with money (preferably foreign currency) to buy something nice.
Point is, some Cuban had a happy day that time...

Mehdi, connecting the sink directly through the ammeter is insanely dangerous. Rooms are laid out mirror image to reduce pipes and utilities, so on the other side of that wall is another bathroom. There's a very good chance you just briefly electrified the faucet/shower in someone else's hotel room.

2:16 The smoke detector in your room is an addressable/conventional smoke detector that is hardwired to a dedicated fire alarm system protecting the building. The beige colored one you showed in the same section of the video is, I believe, a smoke ALARM. Layman's difference: the smoke alarm will sound in its unit, though only someone calling the FD will actually initiate a response. A smoke DETECTOR wired to a fire alarm system that is monitored by a central station WILL have the FD roll the trucks on you as well as actuate the building's notification appliance circuit devices (the loud, strobing or buzzy red things we all hate).

To try to fix the problem the government issued the book "con nuestro propio esfuerzo" (with our own effort) which contains a lot of tips and tricks to DIY fix, repurpose, build, and modify things, some of these devices are explained in a ElectroBOOM way! 🙂

The "its 12pm at night stop it" is very relatable
In Greece we have basically the same thing, some areas where it is hard to get a good grounding work without grounding. Also we have those 230-110 dryer sockets in tourist buildings and all outdoor lights are on a transformer and usually down the power to 12-42v. This sometimes they don't do this and it causes countless problems in winter

What do you tell the technicians you were doing when they have to come flip the breaker switch outside of the room? And how do they react? 😂
If one of those hotel owners recognise him he will get kicked out of the hotel or he would be forced to repair all the electrical systems 😂
Well it would be easy enough to pass off blowing the breaker by being a dumb tourist that plugged something in the wrong outlet.

Hello, I loved your video, I am Cuban and I am still currently living on the island, I hope you have been comfortable, a small explanation about the lack of ground connection is that most houses in Cuba do not use it since it saves in the cable, hahaha, it's more for reasons of saving money than for anything else, it's good that you were able to do tests since here they cut off the electricity quite often, but of course they don't affect the tourist. @@RyO-lt1ui it is a safety feature. Missing ground doesn't usually shock anyone but it means you are not protected against things getting broken and causing shocks

12 kOhm short? Thats resistance, not short. A short circuit is ideally zero Ohms, milliohms in real life.

@@mernokallat645 Well in this case we usually see it as a "short" because the current is taking an unplanned path which could be destructive or dangerous, even though the resistance is much higher than what would normally be thought of as a short.

The smoke detector at 2:20 is not a household smoke alarm, like the one in the other hotel. It’s actually a modern addressable device, which is designed to be wired to a main panel in the middle of the building, and has a code set that will help the staff identify the location of the smoke.
I know it seems overkill for a hotel, but if you burn something, completely separate alarms will sound in every room, strobes flash in the halls, the fire department will be called automatically, AND the staff will know exactly which smoke detector activated, so they’ll know it was you, and the worst part, there’s no way to shut it off without a key and passcode, and in some places, it’s illegal for the staff to even do so without authorization from the fire department.
So in other words, don’t do anything that causes smoke, or even shower with the door open, because it can’t tell steam, or even dust, from smoke.
For anyone into fire alarm tech, it’s a Notifier by Honeywell 851 series smoke sensor.
I hate these things, I went to a hotel that had these and told me to be careful, but I guess it‘s better than no smoke detector or a broken one.

These videos are so interesting. That kind of "spare parts and improvisation" situation seems pretty prevalent there -- doctors, mechanics, electricians, all kinds of professionals who don't have ready access to the latest gizmos, so they use their brains and what they can find, and they do the best they can. It must be a big challenge, and it's really great that people rise to it.

The cars are nice but the reason for them is not nice, the US bans any country from trading with the US if they trade with Cuba and of course Americans have more money so no car company is willing to sell to Cuba and then get banned from selling to the US. Cubans just repair the cars they already have. (Notice the message written on the bus at the end of the video.)

@@amihart9269 Lol Cuba government buy new cars without a problem from Korean, Chinese, European, etc. The entire Police fleet is Peugeot. Regular cuban don't have new cars because for a long time government prohibit their people from owning private cars, so only cars before the 1959 Revolution were allowed to be buy and sold in the private market. Today after some reforms Cuban can buy and own private cars but they are out of any regular people salary.

As someone from Brazil, I have seen many places like that, and I can guarantee that the lack of ground and those inverted pins are not due to technology or safety... Most electricians just ignore those because of the infrastructure or costs. It's usual to get shocks from the shower or fridges here. Those breakers are a luxury most houses don't have (I've only seen them in new buildings).
In most countries neutral wire is grounded on the power plants and transformer stations. I guess it helps to level out potential between different parts of network, but also this is what makes live wire, well, live. Mehdi found out at tha second place that not only outlets lack ground connection, but also have floating neutral. And probably it was intentional, to make it safer.
@@voidseeker4394 It's grounded to make sure that plugged in household appliances that requires ground (because of metal encasing for example) are also grounded and do not shock you when somehwere in the system a short between the ground wire and a live wire happens or a lightning strike hits it.
Yea, it's safer when you touch the live wire but grounding itself is a safety measure for cases where you don't touch the live wire directly.
@@Bobylein1337 uhm, i don't understand what you're talking about. Neutral wire, by definition, is a grounded wire used to get reference potential. If neither of wires is grounded, there is no live wire, both are equal. And shorting it to ground won't do much, because it's whats already done in most countries. And chassis ground is different from the neutral wire, it's dedicated wire, usually grounded locally near the building.
@G E T R E K T your example is irrelevant, 12v battery terminals have potential difference with each other, obviously. But there won't be any noticable current flowing if you connect one of them to the ground. Also, battery outputs DC, while power grid runs on AC, which makes wires change their potentials at 50/60 Hz frequency.
@G E T R E K T i know that ungrounded circuit can have potential difference to ground, but resistance is so high it won't allow any significant current flowing to ground. This is exactly what Mehdi shown in the video. Voltmeter is reading voltage between floating wire and ground, but it doesn't provide current flow.

The device labeled "diferencial" in the breaker box is a residual-current device, which acts like a GFCI through the whole circuit to which it is connected to (like you mentioned at 2:48). All standards based on the IEC 60364 use this RCD device, like we do here in Brazil.
Could you explain more about the isolated transformers? There's not a lot of videos about them and they're confusing
@Sayori Isolated transformers are usually at a scale of transformation of 1, but the secondary can be any voltage you want. The idea is that nothing is grounded on the secondary side. There is no reference to the ground. There is a voltage between the two ends of the secondary winding. If you short them to the ground, one at a time, nothing happens. You can safely touch them. (NEVER TOGETHER AT THE SAME TIME!!!)

Like lighting doesn't it travels through the air to the ground and anything between it
@Sayori the circuit needs to be closed for the current to pass through. If you ground one, no current flows as the path is not completed to the other side. BUT in some rare cases, one side may be shorted to ground as a result of damaged wire insulation, so if you accidentally touch the other side it becomes dangerous because in this scenario the circuit is completed. One side of secondary - broken insulation,exposed wire touches grounded metal parts - you - other side of the secondary.
It is true there are some capacitive leaking but they are negligible at low voltage and not dangerous to humans.

2:21 Those are commercial smoke detectors that are tied directly to the buildings Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP). Setting it off will set the entire building into alarm, if it's set up as an alarm and not a supervisory. It may just set off three floors; The floor of alarm, and one floor above and below. If it is set up as a supervisory, it will just let the hotel staff know to check the room.
The smoke alarm in your previous video can either be standalone or tied into the building FACP. The difference is it's an older conventional device that is wired in zones with other devices so staff won't know exactly where the alarm is coming from, typically just the floor. The one in this hotel is addressable and (If programmed correctly) will tell the staff exactly what room it is in.
A month ago I didn't know anything about fire alarms, but my four year old has become obsessed for some reason, and constantly watches videos about them and knows all the brands and lingo. It is starting to rub off on me. He even had me install a mini xp95 loop with a C-TEC panel in his bedroom. Now I also constantly notice and ponder on fire alarms and call points etc wherever I go.
Are bedroom smoke detectors programmed differently than hallway smoke detectors? Like do they enable verification or set it up as a supervisory like you said? What’s typically done in most hotels and what not?
@@mattdude It depends on the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction, typically the fire marshal) and the fire code in the country/state. Some have all hotel rooms report as just a supervisory with local sounders, sometimes it's a fire alarm and sets off the entire building. The common area smokes will typically send an alarm.
The hostel wiring reminds me of the ancient wiring from upstairs in the apartments in the funeral home I briefly worked at, where they space the wires from stud to stud and have no insulation in the walls.

I find it fascinating that the electrical outlets in Cuba reflect the country's rich history. Pre-revolution it was essentially (or until 1902 literally) an American colony sharing their familiar outlets and 110-120V supply. Post revolution, 220-240V was appealing for compatibility with the USSR's influence. In the 90s forward (the USSR's collapse and Cuba's Special Period) it's been a mix of influences from China (as investors and tourists) at 220V, Canada (mostly as tourists, but who unlike the US have maintained standard trade relations) at 120V, and various other influences. This all lead to different buildings in Havana, or as you found even the same room, having different voltages. There truly is no engineering without politics. Things tend to not work perfectly (like the reversed outlet you found) but I find that all the more charming.
There's a nuclear power plant which was never turned on just outside of Cienfuegos (a really lovely city in its own right) that I'd love to see someone report on (though this would definitely require some government involvement which is... complicated).

Hotels that cater to international tourism often have those "universal" outlets that accept a wild assortment of plugs. It usually isn't the socket that is usual in residentual buildings. What I found interesting is your video is that your hostel had two different voltage conduits installed

Given your love for all things electrical, and especially the FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER, maybe something you could do a video on (maybe the 101 series) would be the expanding HVDC system of transmission. After watching the video from Wendover on the grid, I started down the rabbit hole with DC transmission. I did read there was (still is?) An HVDC line to Vancouver island. I'd love to see the fullest of full bridge rectification on that sort of scale. Definitely seems to be right in your area of expertise.

An Isolated system is only safe as long as it stays safe, but if you don't have a protective cable (I think you call it "earth") a fault in a device may cause live voltage to appear on its outside and it will be undetectable.
Well I mean if it is isolated, even with a live voltage exposed it won't pose a life threatening danger, because there is no path to cause the circuit to electrocute anyone. It should be detectable though, because at 240V I'm sure you will feel it tingle once in a while even when it is completely isolated!

Wow Cuba is beautiful, I wonder what it would be like without a decades long embargo.
Part of its look is primarily due to a near total economic collapse after the fall of the USSR. Cuba pre 1992 isn't like that: thry used to have heavy industry and industrial agriculture rivalling that of the US in terms of mechanization... all powered by free oil from the Soviets. After the collapse of the USSR and the sucessor government saying no more free oil for Cuba, everything collapsed. Cuba in the present is barely holding by...
@@theotherohlourdespadua1131 So the collapse of one of the few countries in the world both willing to ignore the embargo and able to provide material aid to an ally had a negative impact? Cuba's real problem started in '62 not '92 with the yet to succeed embargo imposed by the USA.
@@Kalossabrakstein the US is getting weaker, and Cuba's friends are getting more powerful. The only countries at the UN that don't condemn the blockade are the USA, Ukraine & Israel. Some day soon the pressure will be relieved.

There are undoubtedly issues of corruption within Cuba's leadership, but Diaz-Canel and others are clearly interested in pursuing the modern examples of socialist models. Their close allies in places like Vietnam have been able to provide material wealth for their citizens, while maintaining political autonomy from the West because of geographic isolation. Cuba on the other hand has nearly worldwide political solidarity for it's independence from the USA.
This reminds me of my girlfriends father some years ago. He is an electrician and travelled to Belize one time. After he got pack we gathered to view some holiday pictures old school style. So many of them were showing bad or risky wiring in the streets though. 🤣
