  • Our family emigrated from the UK to Australia in 1958. What they used to call "£10 Poms" My dad was a doctor at Treloar Hospital from 1956-58 and I was born in a cottage on the grounds of the hospital. Wanting to see what my old "home town" was like, I lived in Alton 1977-1979, but returned to Australia in 1980. I haven't been back since my last visit in 2005. Lots of good memories there and a few sad ones too. My lovely old Nan used to live in Medstead. I still think about my old friends and family there. We lost touch many years ago.
I remember enjoying drinks at The Crown in the late 70's, walking along the abandoned railway cuttings leading to Medstead/Four Marks, working at Hammicks and Engelmann and Buckham, visiting the old cottage in which I was born (torn down in 2003), even meeting the midwife who delivered me! She still worked there in 1985! And of course, paying my respects to Fanny Adams and my own relatives buried in Alton Cemetery.
I retrieved this from an old AVI file on a dusty HDD from 2009. Software is so much better now.
