SAN ANTONIO - You hope your garage door opener works every time you need it. If it stops working, you need to get it fixed fast. That predicament can leave you at the mercy of the garage door repair company.The News 4 Trouble Shooters placed hidden cameras inside a garage and tested repair companies to see if they would recommend repairs we didn't need.
That first guy was great. After fixing the sensor, the checks all the other hardware, and even lubricates the torsion spring, while not charging extra for it. That's a true professional.

Dude that last guy was a straight up hustler! Im a garage door tech and i drove an hour to some rich persons house and they had a saftey eye tilted. Now do you think im gonna charge her $20 for a 2 hour round trip? Hell no i charrged her $300 and would do it again in a heartbeat

I can tell from watching this that the springs aren't wound properly, they need tightening and balancing. You can tell by putting a level on the door, looking for daylight and watching it slam on the ground. Your so-called "50 years in the trade experts" are the ones who were full of it. What you proved is that a lot of problems go unnoticed and it's easy for someone who is inexperienced to complain about prices or point the finger.
What could be a $300- $500 service call for adjustments and maintainence could turn into thousands of dollars if neglected. It puts a lot of strain on the operator motor and other moving parts when the springs are loose and the door is imbalanced. A lot of people neglect annual service costs only to pay big money when the door all out fails.
Go ahead and spread distrust and lack of appreciation for service guys. More and more people will leave the business and the people you don't want are exactly what you'll have left over in the end.
This company is hurting our local business. Many customers confuse us with this company and call our offices to complain about them. We are trying to do our best to let others be aware of these fraud companies.
If you need to call an expert for something like this, you deserve everything you get

At 3:48 you can clearly see the do IS inface not balanced correctly. It should not slam back down to rhe ground from that high off the ground. At most it needed a tune up. Door tec here 15+year exp. Cant say much about anything else because not enough info is given on other existing conditions of door.

I called Urban Garage Door company last Friday because I had a coupon from them for a reduced price lube and setting for my garage door. The lady I talked to said someone would call within 30 minutes. Well it's Monday and still have not heard from them. Also they are open on Saturday according to their add, but no call. I want to be clear I'm talking about Urban in San Antonio, Texas. My coupon has now expired. I would not recommend them to anyone because if their work is the same as their communication then it will be pretty bad. Basically, they just lied to me.
Are there any penalties for fraud? I have more shocking facts about some of these firms.

I try to get as much info about what the door is doing or not doing and have walked customers through fixing it over the phone. I've also been on jobs where it is just a photo eye adjustment or something minor and just hand them some cards and say, "No charge, just recommend me to your friends and neighbors." It's cheap advertising. I got 4 jobs from one customer that I gave a freebie.

Tons of crappy companies. 70% chance if you call a national brand you'll get screwed. 50% chance if you call local you'll get screwed. Be a informed consumer, like dude said trust word of mouth. DO NOT TRUST ANGIES LIST.

You point out a MAJOR problem. Homeowners don't know what the charge should be and the repair technicians know that. So they are free to charge whatever they can rip off from homeowners, car owners etc including medical procedures.
Over head door will RIP you off your best bet is to use a smaller local company
Made recommendations and pricing without referring to a price list? Unless that was cut out of the video, that's a red flag to no trust the price quote. Basing this on the age of the home is assuming that there should be problems with the door.
I hate when these big companies try to pass themselves off as local guys. The guy that showed up is probably a contractor that they send work to, much like those home warranty companies do.
That is exactly how GDS (and the many names it operates under) works. They have ads all over Craigslist looking for guys with tools and a pickup.
why don't you fray a cable AND misalign sensor to see if the guys will fix the cable or just the simple sensor repair ........at 3:48 door drops to ground..it is NOT balanced throughout
In the video you show the repairmen lubing a torsion spring. Wen you show the 5th "bad" door company, you show an extension spring. Looks like News 4 is the scammer. Yes, find a REAL local company, with a real shop and office.

They’re all California charging lots and lots of money there lots of Armenians and Israel’s Charging over loads of money a garage door should not cost u more than $700. and opener should not cost you more than $400.
Everything in CA is about 25% higher than anywhere else due to the state gov't imposing fees onto businesses (which are passed on to consumers). Also, everything in CA is known to contain carcinogens, even the food in restaurants. CA has mandated that they post warning signs on their doors. So you have to presume the food is a carcinogen.
You are dreaming. If you purchase just the parts it cost more than what you are saying. Do you think people are working for free? Don’t forget the extra cost of stuff like dumping the old door,fillers,climate seal,angle iron etc. Stop telling people how cheap everything is. A garage door technician makes it look easy because they have experience and know what they are doing. I dare anyone to attempt to install a garage door or garage door opener themselves. I also is a pain in the ting yang to even go pick one up. Is that free too? Go bad mouth car mechanics and leave garage door technicians alone. These sting operations are costing consumers more money because it makes Garage door technicians want to make as much as they can and get out of the business that is why they are price gouging. Fuck the contractor state license board who the fuck are they? They are the biggest scammers of all. They are a legalized mafia. Did you know that 90% of the test to get a license is how the contractor protects himself from the consumers with things like mechanic liens etc. Then they act like they are their for the consumers with fear of hiring a unlicensed contractor. They play both sides and just want control and money. No different than the mafia.
We should do a sting operation on the contractor state license board. I hate those fuckers. Everyone should ask themselves how does Home Depot get away with no contractor license when everyone else has to qualify for one and do all their bullshit to obtain one. Home Depot just has to put up a bond which simply means they bypass everything by paying them off. I guess experience doesn’t matter to them and it has to for everyone else who wants to get a license. It’s all totally bullshit and money driven. The CSLB is the biggest scam of all. We all need to complain to the consumer affairs and governor who oversees them. Also the senators. These guys are dirty bastards and take bribes. Let’s start a organization and go after them.
