    I feel the same way. We've used TGTB math for 2 years with my 2 youngest, so I've used K through currently 3rd grade. The busy pages and the amount of reading can be overwhelming. My 3rd grader has asked "Why do I need to know all this information about these kids in this country to just work out the problem?" Plus, I do feel instruction is lacking and doesn't give a good sense of why we do what we do in math. We are switching to Math Mammoth next year. I've used it in the past and really do love it.

      I’ve heard Math Mammoth is such a good program! My second grader has expressed the same things. And now that we have switched it is so much lighter as far as distractions. We are happy with the switch!

    Thanks for sharing! 🎉 I'm going with apologia. We have 8 more lessons of TGATB math 1 left and then we're starting Apologia. We're doing a mid year promotion. I'm excited about it. I taught high school math before becoming a homeschool mom and it all looks like something I would of loved for my students to be doing when they were in elementary school.

    We switched from TGTB for the same reasons - also, with multiple kids, it was taking too long to read the long stories, play the games, and do the whole lessons with them. I also noticed that my daughter wasn't learning her math facts, and halfway through math 2, there was basically no subtraction. So we swiched halfway through to CLE math and it's been great! My son loved TGTB math K and flew through it, but because of the issues and gaps I experienced with my daughter, we switched to CLE for Gr. 1.

    We are switching for similar reasons. We are just about finished with level 2, so we will complete it, but I ordered Apologia level 3 and it already came in. We will be starting that in a couple of weeks.

    I really love the maths curriculums Japan Math and Simply Charlotte Mason. I agree that we need things to be analytical, and I love that they both have manipulatives.

    Any curriculum I have used has positives and negatives. Concerning math, I found many videos on youtube that explained a concept in a different way that might be better for my kiddos. The same goes for English concepts like the parts of speech, figurative language, grammar. etc.. The internet is such a blessing.

    I use cle and good and beautiful together. My daughter loves the good and beautiful math because of the games and hands on things. Cle has a lot more practice of concepts. It goes good together. We do the same for language arts. Two days a week we do cle two days a week we do good and beautiful things. And it works! It took me awhile to find what worked. Abeka we started in k4 and it was great minus the videos where Way too long but she learned many reading concepts from there. K5 good and beautiful reading program she did outstanding but not enough practice of concepts so first grade we incorporated both because they complement each other. You have fun artsy/ poems to black and white straight to the point. I hope you find what works for you.

      How did the CLE and TGTB combination go? I like both but my daughter found that my daughter didnt really enjoy. I ended up sending her to a microschool due to some circumstances but now back to homeschooling this year. I am in between the two curriculums currently.

    We switched all our subjects from TGATB. Although the curriculum is very beautiful, it was very distracting for me and my kids. Another issue for me as a Christian homeschooling family, there wasn't enough Jesus for us. We switched to Generations for reading, science, and history. Math we are using Easy Peasy online, Plain and not so Plain online, and Khan Academy, they are simple and to the point.

    We tried TGTB for kindergarten and it was just not a good fit. Now we use Apologia and love it. The component you mentioned about not showing why, Apologia does a great job of explaining things like regrouping concretely. Math really should be taught concrete first, then pictures, then abstract. It seems this is missing from TGTB.

    • @Homeschoolingonpurpose

    We switched from TGTB Language Arts for a lot of the same reasons. Too much extra stuff. We switched to CLE LA and she's doing well with it. Straight to the point no vague story that doesn't help learn the concept or busy but very beautiful picture taking up half the page and being distracting. Still using the Math for now but often I'm simply doing the letter on a whiteboard we're not doing it in the book. So I might change math eventually too.

    I watched another homeschool momma saying similar things and I didn’t do it because of her but thinking of my daughter who is a very hands in learner and needs to know why we do things. So I am switching to apologia level 2. However I will supplement TGTB 2 just in case she needs more practice and just in case we go back. Because my daughter loves the stories but she is in 1st too so it’s easier than level 2. I’m hoping it turns out great.
    Also I really think my daughter needs more mastery with a little review/spiral. I think she was learning too many things at once. She doesn’t understand the value of numbers when she’s counting the random numbers. She can count but the. All of a sudden she was going from counting 159 to 110 which I get but she’s missing something

    We quit after many years. Simply math didn't work but worse I found out that he wasn't retaining the old version. I gave him a test to see where he was and instead of going to 5th we are starting Apologia 3rd. We loved the math but the spiral gentle approach and literature approach didn't work. The new simple I didn't like they went to part video so we never bought the new. I did love the games too!! So far I think Apologia mastery is working.

    • @Homeschoolingonpurpose
      @Homeschoolingonpurpose  Рік тому +2

      @cassierice7961 I was a teacher too, so it makes it that much more frustrating. You would think I would know but it's complicated right!However, this is so fundamental that I don't blink about going back to 3rd even if it's lots of review. Teaching Textbooks didn't go well for my daughter either. I think Spiral is better with Lang Arts and not math.

      @homeschoollifemom Рік тому

      My kids loved all the games but I found they didn’t retain it very well either. We started 3rd grade and they did not have a solid adding and subtracting foundation. And I felt like they’d introduce a concept and then it would be dropped for so many lessons and then outta the blue they were still supposed to know about this one thing that was only briefly mentioned. 🥴
