Maybe it's because I was so unsheltered as a child to where I was exposed to things children shouldn't be exposed to, but I actually like the "goody two shoes" feel of TGTB literature. I don't think the characters in TGTB lit are perfect. They have flaws, they make mistakes, and they grow and learn from them. But there is plenty of literature and media out there that normalizes bad behavior, and I don't shelter my kids from all of it. They watch modern kids' shows. So I feel like the TGTB lit adds some balance.

what a great comment! Thank you for sharing your perspective, its helpful to remember that we need to be discerning as parents. No one ever said they regretted bad things not happening to them because their parents were cautious and discerning. They have their whole adult lives to be exposed to hard things in the world. There are plenty of wholesome books that show trials, flaws, growth etc. My comment is unrelated to the actual curriculum , more of a personal philosophy.
I totally understand your perspective and if it works for you that’s wonderful. I certainly am not trying to expose my children to anything they’re not ready for. I just felt it was too good and pretty overall. I have boys. My boys are rough and tough and like pirates, ninjas, super heroes, etc. A beautiful turtle on a rock is just not what they’re into. Haha. That and the literature continues to be very watered down even in the higher levels. My oldest did the book studies in 8th grade and we weren’t impressed. We now use Sonlight. It’s a Christian curriculum AND it uses classic literature that covers age appropriate tough topics when applicable.
@@jennyharmony1371 Yes, I agree. This is why we homeschool. We just don’t like this curriculum for the reasons I stated. It has nothing to do with wanting to expose my children to inappropriate things.
Interesting! I have had these thoughts for some time. When stories are too perfect and the message is always super positive, it comes off as fake. Our children can pick up on the fact that it is disingenuous. It's one of the reasons why I haven't been a big fan of the books that TGTB produce. I prefer real books with imperfect characters and real conflicts and gray area. It helps our children learn to think deeply about things and grow in character and maturity.
The world is so incredibly gray that even adults have a hard time seeing through the haze. In my opinion we have to work hard on building a strong foundation with morals and character traits. A curriculum is not where I want my child to learn about the real world.
Enjoyed this video, I'm on my 5th year homeschooling and I did TGTB at the start. My kids just didn't enjoy it had to change it, now we are happy where we are and using.
What did you decide to use now? Does your kids like it?
@@ZunaGoddess I combine science and history with both my kids through masterbooks, and my youngest does well with their math and language arts but my oldest uses spectrum workbooks for language arts and math.

I definitely think TGTB doesn’t sugarcoat the bad parts of the world. We have only done kindergarten LA so far but there has been a story about a poor family who couldn’t afford basic necessities and there was also a story about a famine and starving families. Those are hard parts of the world. So I wouldn’t say everything in the curriculum is sweet and good but maybe I am misunderstanding exactly what you are saying.
I do remember those stories from level k. You make a good point that not everything is sweet and good in the curriculum. However, in my opinion, most of it is all very sweet and good. The pictures, the messages, etc. This is the case even in the upper levels. My oldest did a book study meant for 8th grade. The book was re-published by TGTB. The book & the study seemed a little too goody two shoes for my 14-year-old boy. He is a very innocent teenager, but even he could see through the overly sweet messaging. This style may be exactly what some are looking for. TGTB is very popular so maybe that is the case. I’m just sharing that it’s not what we’re looking for in a curriculum, and maybe others feel similarly to us. We want a little more edge to it. Such as, Sonlight’s curriculum. They don’t shy away from classic literature that shares very tough topics. I switched to Sonlight for my oldest this past year and we’ve been a lot happier with it. I never meant to bash TGTB bc I do think the creator, Jenny Phillips, has wonderful intentions. It’s just not for us. 💗
@@madisonhoppermomlife5444 I think for an older child that makes a lot of sense since they have definitely experienced more of the world. We have only done the kindergarten level so I appreciate the sweetness at this age especially since there is enough troubles in the world but we would have to reevaluate if that no longer works for us in the future so I understand your perspective in needing something different for your family. We have never done their math curriculum and don’t plan on using it because it isn’t right for our family so definitely not every curriculum is for everyone though so I understand what you are saying more now.
I love TGTB LA up through the 3rd newer levels. I’ve noticed my newly ten year old needs more real life, as you were saying. Because of this statement you gained a new subscriber! You didn’t bash TGTB but made a valid point and made it personal and relatable. As I say to my kids, crap happens and we need to know how to deal.
I moved on with their math, noticed too much issue with jumping around and not mastering enough basic concepts.
I see what you're saying for boys because my sons were like that scribbling on pretty pictures and making jokes, BUT my daughters are so sweet with it, and it brings out a gentle sweet side. It is great for girls and boys who enjoy artwork. Also. I ONLY USE TGTB for language arts. We use Sonlight for history and math u see. The spelling seemed weak to me for 3rd grade level at first, but man, my daughter started out not good at spelling, and 6 mths later, she is amazing at spellin!! I am impressed with it.
I love and appreciate TGTB for my littles, but when my children get to 10+ they are ready to move on. Like you said about the "goody two-shoes" aapect. My sons especially were so over the readers and literature they reccomend. They thought most of it was very dull and didn't refelct the variety and depth found in real life.
I totally understand your points and agree with a lot of them. I chose TGTB LA and Math for our kids this year because I made the decision to homeschool at the end of May of last school year and had no budget set aside for curriculum. We have a prechooler, 2nd grader, two 3rd graders, and a 6th grader, so that adds up quickly. 😅 I also just did not have the time to extensively research curriculums to figure out exactly what we wanted. I used to homeschool our kids, and the reason I stopped was because I was too overwhelmed (we have 6 kids total), so I like that TGTB LA covers LA, spelling, geography, art, etc all in one book. That being said, I plan to use different curriculum for next year because I am seeing the same gaps that you are. I would honestly stop using it this year if I hadn't already printed everything out and had the budget to do so. I agree with you that I do like the preschool program, however I also wish that it incorporated more crafts and hands on projects. For that reason, I just purchased Preschool with Peter Rabbit from A Year of Learning and will do both with my just turned 5 year old. And next year for reading for her and my will be third grader, I plan to use AAR, which I used in the past and loved how systematic and thorough it was.
Sorry but couldn’t watch, the video took too long to get to the point and I really needed to know what was wrong from your perspective.
I feel like with most of their curriculum that we have used from my personal opinion that they hit on concepts, but don’t have a lot of practice before they move on to another one. I feel the same way about their literature, and while I want my kids to steer away from vulgar books I don’t want them to not read a wide variety of books and literature. But their curriculum is truly beautiful and it makes it hard to leave it behind at times. ☺️
Definitely! I don’t want my kids reading vulgar things either. I think there’s a difference between age appropriate topics and just sugar coating everything. Thanks for sharing!
I agree. I found there’s a lack of spelling and not enough focus on the phonics. It’s a one page of booster cards and worksheet and then it’s never mentioned again. There also a lack of writing. We moved to sonlight as they have weekly spelling and the writing is way better which is what we needed. I almost find it too easy in kinder and grade 1 and then older grades just the lessons get longer but I find my kids are not absorbing anything.
Sonlight is a bit too $ so we will go with masterbooks. But I have to say, sonlight really helped my son who was behind with reading and writing much better than TGAB!
I actually love the stories from TGTB. I just feel like it’s too spiral for our needs. My daughter likes it in theory, but is constantly asking me about something that was previously covered when it’s brought back up again because it was only touched upon briefly.
I agree. We’ve had an issue with that as well.
Is what they teach in the LA good like 2nd grade grammar part the adjectives, nouns, heteronyms, synonyms, commas ect I am looking for a solid foundation in that aspect I guess. My 2nd grade can read very well but trying to find a new ELA curriculum has been so stressful. 😭😭
I’ve been struggling with this as well. I thought they taught phonics what do you meant they don’t? but something is just boring for my daughter with the workbook but we are only partway through K and it is just long and boring and I’ve done other ways to teach the same concepts to not make it boring. I’m going to try All About Reading
I agree, I am working with my son through TGATB kindergarten. I don't feel like it has enough focus on phonetic awareness and my son finds it very boring. I'm very sad about it because I was very excited about it. My son hates it though 😢 he hates it when I say it's time to learn to read. He loves their math curriculum though
Im a logic of English Mommy did level A-C, with my Daughter. Just coming here to let you know that LOE is a really good curriculum if you really want a good reading and spelling foundation!
I really don’t see it being good too shoes at all but gentle and kind and loving and teaches children that too. The books the kids read does teach good character. I can see if your not a Christian how someone may not like it because good morals isn’t something they really care for. But as a Christian we walk with Christ and I believe we should have that taught in lessons or in the home period. No homeschool curriculum will be perfect. Everyone has different leaning and teaching styles. I’m sorry you feel like it was good too shoes like. I don’t see that at all and I’ve used many different curriculums.
“But as a Christian” is just never a good look to say to someone. I am actually a Christian. I even read the Bible, which isn’t goody two shoes at all. We live in a fallen world and there is no hiding that from our children. I do use mostly Christian curriculum. Sonlight is a Christian curriculum and they don’t sugar coat the world. They choose classic literature to share with our children that may have some (age appropriate) tough topics in them. I have nothing against TGTB. I think Jenny Phillips is a wonderful person and I appreciate the work she has done in the homeschool world. Of course no curriculum will be perfect. I was simply sharing why I no longer use TGTB.
“But as a Christian” is actually a great “look” as you call it. We are called as Christian’s to hold each other to a higher standard than those that do not know the Truth.
@@reclaimingwonder I disagree. There is a way that a Christian can speak to someone’s heart that is filled with love and compassion. Starting your sentence with a very judgmental tone of “I am better than you because I am a Christian.” Will never speak to someone’s heart.
Not sure where you got the “I am better than you because…” from. However, a lot of Christians are wrongly tolerant of sin in the name of compassion and love. It’s something we need to guard against
@@reclaimingwonder There’s a difference between being “tolerant” sin and being compassionate and kind. You can stand firm in your beliefs without coming off as judgmental.
