The Doors were among the most controversial & influential rock acts of the 60's, mostly due to Jim Morrison's lyrics & voice. They had a lot of great songs such as "Riders On The Storm", "Love Me Two Times", "Roadhouse Blues", "The End", "Break On Through (To The Other Side)", "People Are Strange", "L.A. Woman", "Hello, I Love You", "Touch Me", "The Unknown Soldier", "Love Her Madly". Sadly Jim Morrison died in 1971 at the age of only 27 but left a great legacy of music.

I second that. And often accompanied with a little something to loosen you up. His was the first time I’ve heard anyone have any issue with that musical interlude. It never seemed long to me enough to lose patience with it, but “diffrent strokes.”

You will call Roadhouse Blues a banger. Likewise LA Woman. Don't give up on the Doors. They are one of the most spectacular bands of all time. Their music is huge weird loud and vastly entertaining. Their later stuff sounds quite different from this.

A masterpiece that kicked off their brief run as one of Rock's most iconic groups. Plenty of other songs to choose from in their catalog. I'm partial to "Touch Me"

  • @stevedahlberg8680

I think what's happening is that this is psychedelic rock, this is acid rock. It is meant to be immersive and you need to allow yourself a little time for your musical brain to adjust to things that are less structured than what you are used to, even after all the stuff you've listened to so far.
This is what led to some of that other immersive stuff, Pink Floyd and Rush among them (although Iron Butterfly's In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida pushed that line for most people, laugh), and this idea that, rather than waiting for the next structural piece to develop and analyzing whether you're ready for it or not, instead it's the totally opposite mindset of where you just sink into it and take what's coming each second at a time, and it takes you on this great journey.
And as important and amazing as Jim Morrison was, and I love all of them as and in total as a band I really like Ray Manzarek on the keys the most.
He helped write a lot of the music and he also did some really cool things later: for example, he produced and played on the very first X album, iconic early Los Angeles punk.
I'm sure you know by now, it takes your ears the bit to adjust to any form of music that is somewhat different than what you have experienced before. It's the same when people first listen to hip-hop that aren't really familiar with it. It all seems to sound the same and it doesn't mess with the kind of time flow and structure they are accustomed to. But once you just listen to it and take it for what it is, you start to see all the different nuances and artistry going on to create a certain vibe, at least with the good stuff, just like in this genre and all genres. And The Doors are certainly heavy hitters in this genre.

This song came to be known as "the DJ's friend" being 7 mins long it was the first extended jam that enabled Dj's to take a "break". Up until this time songs longer than 3 mins were considered too long for radio play. As Mr. Dylan said "the times they are a changin'".

Especially if you listen to this again a few times, at some point go check out the Al Green cover of this from his 1973 totally banger album Al Green Get Next To You. He interprets it so differently that the first time you hear it, it is just jarring.
But then it slowly sinks in and it's freaking brilliant. And it is a total homage to the original for sure. Just doing it the Al Green way, laugh.

Keyboards, specifically the Vox Continental organ, was iconic and a dominant driving force of mid-late 60’s rock. Used by the Doors, Animals, Iron Butterfly, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Dave Clark 5, Blues Magoos, Question Mark and the Mysterians, early Rolling Stones, to name but a few. Rock became much more guitar driven after this. Deep Purple and others kept keyboards but used the richer sounding Hammond B3 organ with a rotating Leslie speaker. Different periods, different sounds.
Ray abandoned the Vox I believe in 1969 both to pursue different keyboard sounds as well as the Vox had reliability problems such as the keys breaking.

The bass you hear in any Doors material is either a separate Robby Kreiger dub or Ray Manzarek and a bass pedal. There was no official bass player with the Doors. Jim has one of the instantly recognizable in rock music.

there is no "bassist" in the band, just Jim, Robby (Guitar), Ray (Keys), and John (Drums)

Back in the 60's, popular songs were generally short and sweet... but that changed when the drug era came and bands like Cream... The Grateful Dead... began improvising longer songs from jams. Most of The Doors' songs were short ('Hello, I love you' ... 'People are strange' ... 'Love me two times'... etc), but they had occasional experimentation that resulted in longer songs like 'The End' ... 'The unknown soldier' ... 'Celebration of the Lizard'... etc. The psychedelic drugs like weed, acid and hallucinogens were what affected the minds of musicians to the point they'd be playing on and on... Oasis were a band that verified in 1997 that when they were doped up on coke, they stretched the songs on their album 'Be here now' to unreasonable lengths 😂
The Doors were rather tame lyrically by today's standards... but back in the 60's, the critics even accused John Denver's song 'Rocky mountain high' of being a drug tune (which was ludicrous)... Jim Morrison was a poet who wanted to express himself in The Doors' songs, and would often refer to sex - that branded the band 'obscene' and banned by conservative US states. The FBI had a file on Jim Morrison and they even investigated the band The Kingsmen for their hit 'Louie, Louie' because no one could understand the lyrics of the song! It was a gross overreaction by law enforcement... similar to what happened to N.W.A. in 1989, and Body Count in 1992.
The Doors were not around long... They debuted w/ 'The Doors' (1967) and released the albums 'Strange days' (1967), 'Waiting for the Sun' (1968), 'The Soft Parade' (1969), Morrison Hotel (1970), and 'L.A. Woman' (1971) ... and a live record 'Absolutely live' (1970) before Jim Morrison passed away in 1971... The Doors released 2 albums w/ Ray Manzarek (organ/ keyboards) singing lead, but they failed commercially. In 1978, The Doors put music to Jim Morrison's recorded spoken poetry and released it as 'An American Prayer'.
A 'Greatest hits' album (one of a few!) also became a huge commercial success... Comparatively, The Doors did not sell as well as The Rolling Stones or The Who... (about 4 million copies of albums, 8 million singles in the US by 1972) but their catalog of music along w/ subsequent live records from Morrison's era sold well over time... eventually tallying 34 million copies total in the US, and 100 million worldwide.
In 1991, Oliver Stone made the biopic movie 'The Doors' w/ Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison (Kilmer actually sang the songs on the movie soundtrack) and even though the movie took liberties w/ fantasy sequences (Jim Morrison fancied himself w/ the spirit of a native American shaman) and other incidents... Actress Meg Ryan played Morrison's girlfriend (later wife) Pamela.

    "I don't know if that's a bass I hear."

As a musician of many decades, it is so delightful that you realized that you can extrapolate the idea of a significant and even long guitar solo into the realization that what is actually happening is the same with many different instruments.
Sax for sure. Piano very frequently, and organ very frequently back in the earlier days but all kinds of things. Obviously drum solos, bass guitar solos the least but they still do exist, but they're not prevalent because in certain sections of some songs, the bass player will just go nuts an an engaging way, and it almost becomes the featured instrument in the texture for a while.
But it's just so fun to watch you realizing all these things that make total sense to you; it's just that it's new.
Edited to say: And yeah, love the Jon Lord reference!

many songs from the late 60s have that extended instrumental break for instrumental solos-particularly on album versions for the stoner crowd so they can zone out to the music-check out Iron Butterly's In-A-Gadda-Da Vida for a longer organ solo and drum solo-a stoner classic from 1968. also check out Jose Feliciano's version of Light My Fire for a completely different and successful vibe for the song which became a hit in 1968. Same lyric change on the Ed sullivan show happened with the Rolling stones with "Let's spend the Night Together-with the producers wanting them to sing Let's spend some time together. the rolling stones complied but you can see Mick jagger roll his eyes when he sang the line.

The Doors did employ an actual bassist on many of their studio recordings, but playing live, Manzarek would cover the bass lines on his organ. He also seconded as lead singer during certain performances when Morrison had passed out or was otherwise too intoxicated to sing. Also, regarding the extended solos, you have to remember that most of the people listening to this when it was popular were stoned out of their minds and lost in the music. Not that I'm advocating drug use, but it's something you'd probably have to experience to really appreciate the extended instrumentals.

There is a keyboard solo in the song House of the Rising Sun by the Animals. Not sure if you reacted to that song yet.

The absolute worst thing you can think during a Doors song is “Where is this going?”
The Doors music is all about the Ride. Never the Destination.
Best thing is to sit back, and enjoy it. Let the future handle itself.

Ed Sullina wanted Jim to change a lyric and Jim didn't change it live on air. Ed was more than pissed off and said you'll never be on my show again

That was censorship, back in the day. One of the most influential rock bands ever. Thanks for your reaction.

The term “high on” comes from drugs, and the saying wasn’t just an accepted cliche back then… it was later applied to other things like, “High on Life,” instead of Drugs! Meaning other things can make you happy, not just drugs.

I like reactors who do their homework or do like you are doing, reading some info about the artist before you even play them.

I've heard this song hundreds of times, despite it being made before I was born. It was only now, listening to it anew that I realized that the normal rock guitar part was being played on the organ while the usual bass part was being played an octave or so higher on the guitar. I obviously knew that there was a giant organ solo, but it wasn't until now that I realized that the bass wasn't there and that's why they never sounded quite right.

They hired a bassist for most of their recordings. On stage however, they went without one

The Rolling Stones were on Sullivan, and had to change the lyric from "Let's spend the night together" to "Let's spend some time together."
Sullivan was a first class SOB. Buddy Holly & the Crickets were on, and Sullivan didn't like Holly. During their performance, Holly's guitar was turned off.

Nice take on this, by todays standards it is a bit long.
This was, like many tracks then, music to trip to, where protracted solos were de rigueur.
I still like the long version to just chill to, the shorter AM radio version of course has much shorter solos.
