Oops, Tobias. You mixed up your Particle System with your Atomic Particles. Atomic Particles, Audio Spectrum and Audio Waveform are the ones that respond to music and are in the 'Audio Visual Pack' as an Addon for Hitfilm Express. The Particle System is all about gravity, deflectors, emitters and other cool stuff and is only in the Pro version.
Oh wooops! You are correct! Atomic Particles is part of the Audio Visual pack. For some reason I was under the impression that all particle effects were restricted to the Pro version. Too bad I can't add text annotations to my UA-cam videos any more - I pinned your comment though so hopefully people will see it :) Thank you for letting me know!
I haven't checked yet, but the Hitfilm store does list Fractal Displacement as a particle sim feature. It's possible the particle sim got upgraded with some tricks from atomic. I should check that out.
You can get Hitfilm Pro and Ignite Pro along with a bunch of other stuff for $30 in Humble Bundle Filmmaker Bundle right now and into the end of this month.
THAT I did not know, but that's EPIC. Thanks for sharing the info! And for anyone interested, here's the link: www.humblebundle.com/software/professional-filmmaking-tools-software (Valid for 12 more days)
Thanks so much for your concise and thorough review & comparison of these two programs! By mere coincidence, my husband and I were considering just this weekend whether to upgrade from Express to Pro, and decided to go for the full package thanks to your video (and discount! Thanks again!)
Woo! That worked out well, hope you managed to get the 25% discount that was going around this weekend :) Thank you so much for the awesome comment, always very humbling to hear that people enjoy my videos! All the best!
I just wanna say that I subbed to this channel about two months or so when I was looking for Adobe Premier Pro beginners tutorial, that video was simple and straight to the point. Great job, Tobias! 👍🏽 Unlike videos from other channels I had watched before, they were very boring and talking sloppy like they were still learning themselves while the mouse pointer occasionally hovered all over the screen to something completely different from what they're talking about. I want to start a filming and photography studio for small family gatherings, I would give this HitFilm Express a try to sharpen my skills before I upgrade to Premiere Pro which is my preferred editing program of choice. HitFilm Express is not so bad, it seems. I saw the video where you introduced HitFilm Express for beginners. Thanks for simple, straight forward tutorials! Keep it that way, it shows us that you know what you are talking about. 😍 😊
Thanks for this Tobias. Between Hitfilm and Davinci Resolve I think Adobe is going to be forced to do something about Creative Cloud pricing. I just dumped Premier Pro in favor of Resolve, and I'm betting that Hitfilm will do everything I actually need from After Effects (not that the tools are really comparable, but my needs are modest).
You're welcome Matt! I really do hope that all these other players force Adobe to a) reduce their Creative Cloud pricing and b) fix up some of their long-standing issues with their software. More players in the market should hopefully lead to good things for the end user :D
Hitfilm Express is great, if you want more advanced video timeline editing though and not interested in the 3d stuff then Hitfilm Pro is a bit of a disappointing upgrade. There simply is not enough extra in pro that really brings it close enough to PP to bridge the price gap. It's unfortunate because it is the closest of the free software that actually feels like PP in terms of it's UI.
Hello! Speaking as someone who has been using HitFilm Express since 2016, I had to say that Express has helpt me a lot and I always recommend those in need of a good video editor that is free. Before HitFilm, I was using Windows Movie Maker and VSDC Free Video Editor (Which the latter was not in a good state at the time I used it, in my opinion) so trying to get used to some of the advancements HitFilm has compared to WMM and VSDC was a new task and was a bit daunting but after a while, I got through and fell in love using the program Also, as someone that does animation and a web series that don't require that much affects, I'd say Express is pretty good in my book. ^^ Will I need to use Pro in the future? That depends what the future may hold for me. Until then, HitFilm Express seems right for me. ^o^ This has been a well-informed video btw. :)
Once challenge in Both Version is the text administrator, yest can make nice titles, but Subtitles and font management previews are very important. I notice that the text box only have 6 features and i copy and paste the Size of the font will be altered and can't be resized, another issue is there is no editing Subtitles can only be done in Composition shot and duplicate each text can affect all text boxes.
Have you seen all of my beginner / intermediate and advanced tutorials? :) I got close to 200 of them on my channel and lots of them are organised into playlists you can follow
hitfilm pro needs more video transitions. hitfilm has only a few and other editors have tons. it's tedious to have to make transitions in hitfilm that other editors include by default.
Thanks. Useful. If I want to go with free and still animate 3D, I better get the 3D animations all worked out in the source apps (Vue, DAZ Studio) before final processing in HF. That's what I needed to know.
Nice video Tobias. As it's now the end of 2018 and Express is onto version 11, how about doing an updated version of this video? Covering what 3rd party plugins that Pro supports, would be really useful too.
Thank you :) I will still make effects tutorials, but I also want to offer other content. I've been making effects tutorials for many years now and do need a bit of a change myself every now and then or I'll start walking up the walls XD
Hey Bandit Brooks, I don't have any specific tutorial for it unfortunately. It was mainly just green screened, then added a bunch of 2D graphics I whipped up and pixelated the whole lot to give it the 'game' vibe :D
Nice breakdown, and I was loving the video game graphics. Someone else pointed out Atomic already, but another note is one does get partial credit for Express add-ons when upgrading to Pro. Or, putting it another way, when upgrading from Express to Pro one gets a discount based on owned add-ons. The rigidity map is a little tricky. It's a black and white pixel map where black/white values control how much flex a Puppet has. Possibly best prepared in a photo editor. If creating a rigidity map in Hitfilm it needs to be either in its own Composite Shot or buried at the bottom of the layer stack under a grade layer (using the grade as the map). Good breakdown! Merry, Happy, Jolly, Bah-Humbug!
Thank you for the great feedback! Had fun creating the fake video game graphics :D I did pin the post about Atomic Particles being available in the Audio Visual pack - I didn't know that and unfortunately there's no longer a way to add annotations to videos in UA-cam. I'll pin yours as well. Great to hear you get some partial credit for existing add-on packs :) I tried many different options with the Ridigity map, but couldn't figure it out. The documentation definitely needs an update, there is no section on how to use the new Puppet Tool in there just yet :)
Surfaced Studio Credit for Express add-ons is something FXHOME need to make more obvious. Probably something for the add-ons store. I'll brainstorm something and bounce it to Kirstie, but might wait until January since nobody does anything in the last two weeks of the year because of one of December's 29 different holidays. *Shrug*. You're right, the documentation needs updating, but I believe poor Axel has that task, AND is primary customer support guy, AND is probably still rebuilding after his house fire earlier in the autumn, so... I'll be patient. :)
All good! Thanks for the follow up! House fires are pretty serious and I hope Axel will get back up on his feel. I doubt much will move during the Christmas period and that's totally understandable :) You seem pretty well connected to the HitFilm team - are you working for (or with) them?
Surfaced Studio Not as such. I'm a beta tester, I'm a Forum Moderator on their site, which is volunteer. I've done six or seven guest tutorials on their channel, so I'm certainly "better connected" than most of the Hitfilm user base, but I'm not official or anything. Great team of people. Actually a guest tutorial was contracted because of Axel's issue. All I knew at the time was his Macs were down. Didn't know why till Axel mentioned it in a tutorial.
Sir, you did all the staffs(shoot, effects, vfx ,graphics etc ) for a comparison 😮. Amazing ! Another one is your T-shirt . How can i get the illustration of your T-shirt ?
While After Effects has all the stuff that HitFilm Pro has and it costs loads less. Still, i might think about using HitFilm express for just editing. Cool video, man!
The part they mislead you with is any updates to Pro must be purchased as well, if you have 2017 Hitfilm Pro, you have to buy any upgrades for 2018 version, usually $149 last time I looked
I don't think there is anything misleading about it. That is how single licenses work and have always worked. If you want something that includes free upgrades to new versions, you will need to go onto a subscription model like the Adobe Creative Cloud. HitFilm does not offer a subscription model though
it is misleading when the promo video shows that if you're going to buy upgrades for express eventually it'll cost $345, where the full version will only cost $299, plus an additional $149 for any updates, even if you bought the product 30 days before the newer version, it's still $149, there is no discount. You pay half the price of the software for two added features

Sir nice video 👍 My problem is I am not able to use video effects in hitfilm express 4 free version. Can u tell how to use them Any help appreciated Thanks and regards
Hi, I don't have that yet and not sure how fair I could make such a comparison :) Since HitFilm does both editing and VFX, it's weaker in both areas as compared to Premiere Pro (editing) or After Effects (vfx). It's more a Jack-of-all-trades though I'm really excited to see where HitFilm will go in the future :)
That all depends on how the products develop over the coming years and my guess on that is as good as anybody's :) HitFilm certainly has a lot of potential
Not sure yet unfortunately. Houdini has fallen off my priority list a little bit behind some other things I want to focus on first :) Hopefully I'll get around to it eventually
Does Hitfilm Pro still lag during playback like Express? Do you still have to press the button to render a few seconds still to view it smoothly? Also, is the color grading and effects more intricate and precise? Is it "professional level"?
The technical basis for both programs is the same - Pro just has more features. If the latest version of Express lags on your machine, chances are so will the Pro version
There is no simple solution and it depends on the footage you have. The hardest part is re-constructing whatever was behind that object - check out some of the tutorials on projection mapping, that's the most common technique used to remove objects / people from moving shots
Thanks for putting together the video in the information on this program, does this support 4K at 60 frames a second and also the higher frame rates to do slow Mo using the HEVC codec, Thanks for any info you can provide
Thanks for a quick reply, I went ahead and tried the express version first. It only plays the audio portion and not the video. They are 4K 60 frames per second. From a GoPro6 , not sure if the codec has something to do with it. I believe it's a HEVC codec, and the files start with a GXO. Thanks
Just an FYI ,I did confirm with hit film that hevc (H2.65) codec. Is not compatible . I know the new gopro 6 high Frame rates uses this codec. You can find a converting software to H2.64 or I'm guessing premier pro CC supports it. But that is a monthly subscription .. Thanks again
ok so i bought hitfilm pro a couple of years ago and am about to setup a new computer, how can i get the software again without buying it again? or how do i retrieve the license to set it up on a new computer?
Hi, I do not work for FX Home I just make tutorials on UA-cam :) You need to contact their customer support to help you out but you should just be able to log into your account with them and download the software - once signed in the license should be linked to your account
Does HitFilm Pro have Split Screen? The ONLY place I was able to find split screed was as an add-on to the Express version. Thanks so much for this comparison. What kind of Split Screens can I get with Hit Film? There is NO information on that anywhere -- and I really dislike the non-PDF, web-only User Guide -- I can't search for anything! Does HitFilm think I'm going to read the entire manual cover-to-cover to find what I'm looking for? You implied that all of the Add-on packs are included in the Pro version. Is this true? Where is Split Screen in Pro? I couldn't find it. I just uninstalled the 'free' Pro, and am getting Express.
What do you mean with 'Split Screen'? If you just want two videos playing side by side you can simply add 2 layers and reposition them as you want. No add ons or magic needed, works just as well in the Express edition
It's not really comparable. In my personal opinion (and remember, everyone is different) Premiere Pro is more powerful at editing than HitFilm and After Effects is more powerful at VFX than HitFilm. However, HitFilm does both, while PP and AE really only cover one aspect of the process
Check out the HitFilm store - you get 12 month support and updates with the purchase of HitFilm Pro. And no, while HitFilm does both, it's not the same as having 2 separate, dedicated (and much older / more mature) tools for each task. I'm excited where HitFilm will be in a a few years though :)
Thanks ,I do have all the requirements ,actually I did make sure before downloading it..pity I did want to try before buying it.Now I better not waste my money.I just want to make 4k quality videos with no problems.
It's better than the previous Pro version for sure. I did notice that with some file types though I did get some lag and it just generally still felt a little slower than PP or AE
Great comparison! Very helpful! Do you think Hitfilm Pro can compete with Adobe premiere/After Effects? By the way: Are you a native German? Your English sounds like that a bit... ;-)
Thank you and as for your question: personally I prefer the Premiere / AE combo. I feel that since they are two dedicated programs for editing and VFX there's more power behind them. Also, they have been around a lot, lot longer than HitFilm. But who knows where HitFilm will be in a few years? It's definitely going the right direction and I love the idea of having an all-in-one tool :)
Thanx for your response. HitFilm is also cheaper of course - and I don't like these software subscriptions. Over the years you pay an awful lot of money...
That depends. Premiere Pro is only for editing, not for VFX. If you just want to edit your videos and don't mind a monthly subscription, get Premiere. If you also want to do VFX and don't want to get After Effects, then get HitFilm
what about Hitfilm Express free or Camtasia cuz I can Camtasia for $20. So whats best free Hitfilm or Pro Camtasia 9? Also Camtasia i have like 13 hours to get it for $20 not sure if I should purchase it.
Sorry I never used Camtasia so I can't comment on that :) HitFilm Express is certainly a great option. Full beginner tutorial here: ua-cam.com/video/Y01ZEt5xmsM/v-deo.html
I believe it’s a once off purchase, but I don’t work for HitFilm and their pricing models have changed over the years. If you want to be absolutely sure you can always ask in the HitFilm forums :)

@@SurfacedStudio im not thinking of the internet im making a full movie , the last one i made the trailer was shown at the cube, that had to be converted to DCP
Please help me out kind sir! I can't seem to find a clear answer anywhere. I emailed hitfilm themselves and I got no answer. Do I need the pro version to edit 4k footage (with out lagging)? I'm running the newest version (14.1). I've tried putting in on a lower res timeline. I've tried lowering the playback res. I've tried everything I can think of. It laggs so much that is impossible to work with. Im sure it's possible my computer isn't up to snuff but I can edit the same footage in davinci with tons of FX and the heaviest of heavy grades. I'm at a loss 😞
Unfortunately that sounds like a technical issue and the best place to get support is on the HitFilm forums. It could be that that particular video codec doesn't work well with HitFilm - in terms of performance both Express and Pro should be the same, they only differ in features so no need to upgrade. Have you tried other files (recorded with other cameras or downloaded online) to see if that works?
I give up on looking for a free software that has a 3d camera tracker, i'll just stick to Blender and embrace the way it works (plus hitfilm runs like crap)
HitFilm 12 (and later) runs a lot better than the previous versions. If you need a free tool with 3D Camera Tracker then Blender is not a bad option though
You can get Hitfilm Pro and Ignite Pro along with a bunch of other stuff for $30 in Humble Bundle Filmmaker Bundle right now and into the end of this month.
@@sebastiandouse I tried to use hitfilm a few times and i just can't.. i didin't find it appeling to use idk why, after my first comment tho i REALLY learned blender's tracker and how powerful it really is, turns out the problem was the person behind the computer... plus its free, for video editing i use kdenlive it operates fairly similar to premiere but its also free and open source, it is a bit rough around the edgdes but its great nonetheless
@@kendarr Well still it might be worth getting that bundle if you ever are interested in the all of the VFX plugins that come with the bundle. Also I think Ignite pro allows you to export those VFX effects to other software so you do not need to use Hitfilm which is cool. Is the Discount from the description working meanwhile?
Yes, you can use discount code SURFACEDSTUDIO10 to get 10% OFF
Cool video mate... I want to move step further from Vegas 14 :)
Awesome sir...
Can u make some vfx and editing tutorials for hitfilm express....???
Checkout my tutorial playlist for HitFilm here: ua-cam.com/video/Y01ZEt5xmsM/v-deo.html :)
Thanks You
No worries!
Do you already have (or plan on making) an After Effects vs HitFilm video? Maybe only focused on the compositing side of HF for fairness?
Hi, I don't have that yet and not sure how fair I could make such a comparison :) Since HitFilm does both editing and VFX, it's weaker in both areas as compared to Premiere Pro (editing) or After Effects (vfx). It's more a Jack-of-all-trades though I'm really excited to see where HitFilm will go in the future :)
Will Hitfilm Pro be able to surpass after effects and premiere pro with time?(your opinion)
That all depends on how the products develop over the coming years and my guess on that is as good as anybody's :) HitFilm certainly has a lot of potential
Them muscles tho
HitFilm Pro has been working out for sure :D
haider ali - Muscles don't make a man.
@@trumpobamasnewworldorderma2637 Someone sounds jealous...
Muscle addon pack is included with pro version
When are you going to make a part 2 on the face melting tutorial?
Not sure yet unfortunately. Houdini has fallen off my priority list a little bit behind some other things I want to focus on first :) Hopefully I'll get around to it eventually
Thanks
Does Hitfilm Pro still lag during playback like Express? Do you still have to press the button to render a few seconds still to view it smoothly? Also, is the color grading and effects more intricate and precise? Is it "professional level"?
The technical basis for both programs is the same - Pro just has more features. If the latest version of Express lags on your machine, chances are so will the Pro version
hitfilm express is enough for me, thanks
Whatever works for you :)
@@SurfacedStudio 🙄😍😍
Can you make a video on how to completely remove any object from any video and if you know a tutorial for this can you link me to it?
There is no simple solution and it depends on the footage you have. The hardest part is re-constructing whatever was behind that object - check out some of the tutorials on projection mapping, that's the most common technique used to remove objects / people from moving shots
👍
:D
wow, realy good video, thx for youre work. finger goes up ;-)
Thanks man :)
Tobias, According to you Hitiflm Pro is better in VFX than After effects?
Thank u
You are welcome!
Thanks!! : )
Welcome!!
Thanks for putting together the video in the information on this program, does this support 4K at 60 frames a second and also the higher frame rates to do slow Mo using the HEVC codec, Thanks for any info you can provide
No worries. And yes, HitFilm Express supports 4K up to 100fps :)
Hi, I do not work for FX Home I just make tutorials on UA-cam :) You need to contact their customer support to help you out but you should just be able to log into your account with them and download the software - once signed in the license should be linked to your account
i want a 2.35:1 screen format w/o black bars
Set your project resolution to a 2.35:1 aspect ratio
@@SurfacedStudio ok done
thanks man you helped me a lot
Glad to hear!
Really nice! Thank you! Also that link might come in handy in the future ;)
Thank you :) Hopefully it will!
This helped ALOT, thanks
Great to hear! :D
Happy Christmas
Merry Christmas to you too :D
I saw ur biggner tutorials of houdini so pls from next tutorials can u start with rigging and animation of 3d models pls sir
It's something I might do at some point, but likely not anytime soon. I'm not much of a 3D artist so I never did any rigging or animating myself
Surfaced Studio ok sir
Could you please compare between hitfilm and adobe premiere pro or after effects .... Pleaseeeeeeeeeee
It's not really comparable. In my personal opinion (and remember, everyone is different) Premiere Pro is more powerful at editing than HitFilm and After Effects is more powerful at VFX than HitFilm. However, HitFilm does both, while PP and AE really only cover one aspect of the process
I love hit film pro
:D
I want the pro but I still don't know what I need
Just get Express then :) You can always upgrade later or piece meal things together with add-ons
Does Hitfilm express support 4k uhd export for 4k uhd video?
this awesome!
:D
Could you teach us how to make a blaster effect from rogue one in after effects?
I can put it onto my request list :)
Surfaced Studio yay
would you say that the pro is equivalent to premiere and after effects? also when you purchase do you get updates on the software?
Check out the HitFilm store - you get 12 month support and updates with the purchase of HitFilm Pro. And no, while HitFilm does both, it's not the same as having 2 separate, dedicated (and much older / more mature) tools for each task. I'm excited where HitFilm will be in a a few years though :)
We need AE alternative
Plenty of those :) HitFilm is one of them
Sounds lucrative BUT I can't install either one.My graphic card is good so what's the problem then?
Here are the official requirements to run HitFilm: hitfilm.com/express/specs
Thanks ,I do have all the requirements ,actually I did make sure before downloading it..pity I did want to try before buying it.Now I better not waste my money.I just want to make 4k quality videos with no problems.
For technical support, try getting in contact with the HitFilm team
hey tobias did you notice better playback when you scrolled through video i noticed that was an issue in your hitfilm review
It's better than the previous Pro version for sure. I did notice that with some file types though I did get some lag and it just generally still felt a little slower than PP or AE
well like you said give it some time to grow up and mature it will be better in the days to come (i added that last part)
:)
You do, but you don't have to pay for new versions or updates or patches so it likely evens out in the end. Depends on what you prefer though :)
thanks alot for the video.
You're welcome!
What do you recommend premier PRO or hitfilm pro
That depends. Premiere Pro is only for editing, not for VFX. If you just want to edit your videos and don't mind a monthly subscription, get Premiere. If you also want to do VFX and don't want to get After Effects, then get HitFilm
Does hitfilm Express has a watermark??
The Express edition does not have a watermark as long as you don't use any of the effects marked as 'Pro' - fxhome.com/compare/hitfilm
what about Hitfilm Express free or Camtasia cuz I can Camtasia for $20.
Is content creator pack on HitFilm Express was monthly paid?
I believe it’s a once off purchase, but I don’t work for HitFilm and their pricing models have changed over the years. If you want to be absolutely sure you can always ask in the HitFilm forums :)
Hello sir.im from india.I want to buy hit film studio package.but I'm confused .It a one time payment?
Becoz Adobe primeare is monthly nd yearlly package
Yup, HitFilm Pro/Studio is a once off payment. Also, remember you can use coupon code SURFACEDSTUDIO10 and you get 10% off the final price :)
Hi, is it possible to create more sequences in the same timeline in Hitfilm ? like in Premiere Pro ?
No, HitFilm does not have the concept of sequences. However, you can create any number of composite shots (they're not the same though)
you guys are my teachers! I need super help....... I have an intro idea but need pointed in the right direction to make it come to life if you can help me out that would be amazing! also how do I contact you if you can give me some pointers!?? thanks guys
Thanks man! I am always happy to try to answer any questions you may have. Due to the large amount of messages / questions I get though I usually do a fairly 'light touch' so I don't really get involved in everyone's projects and responses may be slow, but happy to answer any questions you may have :)
6:30 that vfx shot honestly sucked. your other one was AWESOME tho!
are there any features that you can use in hitfilm express and not with pro?
No. If you think about it that also wouldn't make much sense to have features in the free edition that you wouldn't get with the paid version
how do i render my 4k footage what settings would i use ? please
Totally up to you and your requirements :) I personally render everything I upload to the internet with H264
@@SurfacedStudio im not thinking of the internet im making a full movie ,
the last one i made the trailer was shown at the cube, that had to be converted to DCP
Can you make Hitfilm Pro cheaper?
You can get 10% off with my discount code :) For anything beyond that you have to contact the HitFilm team
Mh okay, but its too expensive, but it has all features what i need
Maybe the team can make a few addons for free....
But id dont think
Which screen recorder did you use
Have you tried other files (recorded with other cameras or downloaded online) to see if that works?
how to download it

Dunno about upon making this video but Hitfilm express does have a chroma key effect.
If you are talking about the 'Chroma Key' effect, that is a paid add-on for Express - or included in the Pro version :)
So what is ignite Express and pro then? Is it like After Effects cc then?
Ignite is a plugin pack that brings the effects from HitFilm (Express or Pro) to other hosts such as AE
So I dont have to get Hitfilm Pro and I can just get plugins?
You sure can! :) And you can get 10% OFF as well if you check the video description (except for the Mocha plugin)
@@SurfacedStudio k, thanks
Can you give this link
see my vid on the new hitfilm . is it even usable?
So I have to pay to have effects on my video with hitfilm express ??
No. Where did I say that? :)
@@SurfacedStudio Some people say that , I wanted to know it's true or not . You answered me . Thank you ☺
the particle addon isnt really a reason to buy...
There's lots of other features you only get in the Pro version. What is and isn't a reason to buy is really up to you :)
What do you like 2D or 3D ?
Both :)
is hitfilm express is watermark free
AWESOME BROTHER!!! Yes
YEPP NO WATERMARK ITS TOTALY FREEEEE BEST FREE EDITORR. there is compositing editingm u dont really need to buy ae or pr pro
lmao wtf yes mannnnnnnnnnn
Yeah, Express should be enough for me.
You can do a lot of awesome stuff in Express :D ua-cam.com/video/lUvGsfkeExA/v-deo.html
guess Linux Kdnlive can envy only the all functionality HitFilm Express.
@@SurfacedStudio Yeah i'll just stick to it, have been using it for years for modeling, and texturing, i love that piece of code what can i do
You can get Hitfilm Pro and Ignite Pro along with a bunch of other stuff for $30 in Humble Bundle Filmmaker Bundle right now and into the end of this month.
Its over $500 worth of software for $30 even if you do not plan on using it as your main editor it might still be worth it.
how to use hittfilm express for free pls tell me
