    I grew up riding in my father's Oldsmobiles. I have especially fond memories of the 455 in his '67 98 Luxury Sedan pulling me deeper into the seat. I also found this commercial insulting to my hard-working Dad. But the '89 Cutlass Supreme two-door was truly a styling masterpiece.

    This is a time when car commercials really got you excited to go into a dealership and look at all the new models. I love this commercial from Oldsmobile as it will always remind me of what a great car company it was back then. It sickens me that GM let Oldsmobile drive itself right into the ground. They kept cutting funding for the division and they had less and less to work with on research and design as time went on. I'm a proud Oldsmobile fan of these generation cars. A time when style and class meant something instead of corporate accountants dictating the need for cheaper and cheaper cars. I belonged to "The save Oldsmobile" campaign and lobbied GM to save Oldsmobile. These cars are a part of who I am and I wanted to do everything I could to keep them afloat. As a side note, this video creator is the only one on UA-cam to have this full and uncut version of this commercial. All the others are just shortened versions of this long great advertisement. Thank you for posting it.

    God we loved these 80’s and 90’s corporate campaign jingles coupled with these images of people laughing and having fun in colorful future settings. I know I did.
    This one is right up there with Sears’ “Come See the Softer Side if Sears” and A&P’s “We Built a Proud New Feeling” campaigns. They were all companies with centuries of history where they were trying to change the stodgy perceptions of their brands with these extended-length pop songs. It didn’t work for any of them unfortunately. Oldsmobile maybe had it the hardest since the word “old” was right in its name.

    As detrimental as this advertising campaign was to Oldsmobile's brand name and overall reputation, it did make for a catchy jingle. I honestly believe that if they'd left the "not your father's Oldsmobile" bit out and replaced it with something else, this commercial would have been far more successful in attracting new buyers to Oldsmobile.

    • @klwthe3rd
      @klwthe3rd 5 років тому +3

      What are you talking about? Do you nothing about Oldsmobile history. This ad campaign was highly successful. Oldsmobile sold more cars during this generation from 1986-1991 than any other generation. Even more so than when they were selling the rear wheel drive models from 1980-1985. There were tons of these cars on the road during that time. GM developed the "3800" motor in 1988 and most people believe it to be the most durable and smooth running engine GM ever made. My family owned a 1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale Brougham from this generation and it was the best car we ever owned. In 12 years of ownership, only one thing broke and it was covered under the new 5 year/60,000 mile warranty which was new for 1988. Take some time to learn your facts before you spout such nonsense.

    • @thomasharkins4779
      @thomasharkins4779 5 років тому +4

      With all due respect, Oldsmobile's highest year of sales overall was actually in 1985, with a total of 1,066,122 units sold during the fiscal year. By the late 1980s to early 1990s, the company found itself competing with Japanese and European luxury brands like Lexus, Acura, BMW, and Audi. In the time you described (1986-1991), the Oldsmobile brand lost close to half of its overall US market share (money.cnn.com/2000/12/12/companies/oldsmobile/).
      As far as the 3800 engine, many friends of mine have owned cars using that same motor and would definitely agree with what you said, save for one guy who had a major problem with the O2 sensor.

      Judging from your earlier comments about how you were part of the "save Oldsmobile" campaign, I can tell you are very passionate about Oldsmobile. I am as well, to the point that I wrote about the company's history as part of a speech for my communications class (which ended up getting me an A). Everyone who owned an Oldsmobile in my family had nothing but good things to say about the cars. I really think it was a huge mistake for GM to invest their capital into Saturn during the late 1980s as opposed to further revamping and redeveloping the Oldsmobile lineup during that same time (should I also add, Saturn was never a profitable brand, and 41% of its customer base comprised of people who owned other GM vehicles before).

    • @klwthe3rd
      @klwthe3rd 5 років тому +3

      @@thomasharkins4779Yes you are correct that 1985 was their best selling year. But they did not suffer at all from the redesign from 1986-1991. The link that you posted is out of date as it stated that article was gone. I also was not talking about one specific year but rather a culmination from 1986-1991. GM did have to compete with more car lines by that point so yes it was harder to gain market share but they still sold a ton of vehicles during that time. I still see more of their front wheel drive cars on the road than I ever see of the old rear wheel drive models from 1980-1985.

    • @thomasharkins4779
      @thomasharkins4779 5 років тому +3

      The link worked fine when I sent it from my phone, maybe it’s a server issue? Try googling “Oldsmobile sales” or “Oldsmobile market share” and a picture from that same link should show up as one of the first few. And as far as the redesign of the cars during that time period, I have no qualms whatsoever with how the cars looked or reportedly performed (who didn’t love the Aerotech concept car and the ‘89 Cutlass Supreme?). My comment was more directed at the “not your father’s Oldsmobile” tagline than anything else. In my opinion, that line gave people a sort of false perception that “Olds”mobile cars were just that: old, boring, and outdated. We both know that nothing could be further from the truth. I just felt that something a little less disregarding to the past may have fit this campaign a little bit better and avoided some of the cognitive dissonance that the company faced from unwitting consumers.

    This is the ad that destroyed Oldsmobile. You didn't see Buick running an ad like this did you ? Oldsmobile and Buick were older " your fathers " cars. You could take the hot cars from olds and buick out of the equation, the 442 cutlass and buick GS were younger buyers, but the 88's 98's toronados, le sabers, electras, rivieras were older buyers. Some were Cadillac buyers that didn't want a flashy Cadillac in the driveway showing off their status in front of the neighbors.

      I know what you're saying Lamarr, but I see your comment is from 1 year ago. Since early 2018, I'm noticing A LOT of new Buicks being driven by young people----in Los Angeles (where I live). It's become a "hot" trendy, cool brand for people seeking an alternative to the dime-a-dozen Mercedes and BMW's out here. Buick also scores very high on the JD Powers list. I'll repeat that: Buick has come a LONG way in a short amount of time, in the LAST market of the U.S you'd expect, but it has. Obviously their TV ads addressing the 'Grandfather' image head-on worked very well.

    • @Teraforce88
      @Teraforce88 6 років тому +2

      Bob Pierce That's surprising, especially because it's LA. Here in the Midwest where Buick have always been popular (Indianapolis), it's the older middle-aged people that drive the newer buicks. Technically they are younger than your stereotypical Buick driver, but not by too much. Older buicks are still driven by the elderly (or their surviving millenial grandchildren).

    • @bobpierce115
      @bobpierce115 6 років тому +3

      Thanks for the reply! Just to be more specific than I was a few weeks ago, the Buicks of today are primarily SUV's, but none are like Tahoe's, Suburban's etc. These are mid-size to small models, like the Buick Encore. About the only "car" they make is a Lexus-type 4 door sedan, along with a new Opel-based convertible called the Cascada, which is attractive. All new cars are waaaay too expensive, but I wouldn't mind have that Buick Encore myself----at all.

    • @Teraforce88
      @Teraforce88 6 років тому +1

      You are correct, I totally wasn't even thinking about their SUVs and crossovers when I made my first post. I definitely see younger people driving their SUVs. Enclaves and Encores are especially popular now, and I still see plenty of Rendezvous SUVs on the road still. There are even a decent number of Rainiers left. I don't see too many Envisions or Terrazzas though; maybe because people know that the former is made in China and the latter is just another crappy GM minivan.
      LaCrosses are primarily driven by older folks, and Regal drivers are only about 10 years or so younger. Veranos seem to be driven by all walks of life. Cascadas are very uncommon.
      And of course, I still see DOZENS of 90's Buicks on the road every day.

      The Buicks and Oldsmobiles of this generation, late 1980's and early 1990's were the best built, best looking of all years in my opinion. When GM developed the "3800" in 1988, that engine was indestructible, smooth and powerful. I have a 1993 Buick Regal Gran Sport sedan fully loaded and I can't tell you how many looks/compliments I get when I take it out on the weekends. I bought the car in 2012 and I was only 37. I'm proud to drive it. I really need to get an Oldsmobile though since my family was an Oldsmobile loyal family since the 1950's.
