Thought it would take my daughter a month or two to be able to do these beats well but the first night we set up her drum kit she was playing them. Likely due to your clear and concise explanations. Thanks for taking the time to post these

I started playing drums when I was 58 years old. This is the first beat my teacher taught me. It is never too late to learn!

I am a guitar player, but I bought a used Roland TD-4SX drum set for $280. I've been beating around on this thing for a couple of weeks making noise. Today I found this video and now I'm a drummer :)!
Love the video and I really needed that scripture today!

I am a 60 year old grandmother and I promised myself that before I die I want to be able to drum along "a whiter Shade of Pale" from Procol Harum. That will be a long way away, but I love how you get me to actually drum a beat! Thank you for your great, relaxing lesson :-)

I've been fascinated with drums forever and always wanted to play. My husband bought me an electronic drum kit last year as I wanted to learn so I could play with our worship team (sometimes we don't have a drummer). I've been too scared as I know I'll be terrible at first and I'm not used to not being good at things! This video really helped and the scripture at the end was such a surprise but really really blessed me. You have no idea how much! So thank you :)

Lisa Bond That's silly :) I know guys I've known 20 years, who are playing 50 years who make LOTS of mistakes EVERY day. Just I'm the only one who can tell. :) Guitar player's got no clue, lol. I make a lot of them, please go see my channel. So what? Bands DON'T CARE. I've seen Danny Seraphine of Chicago drop sticks live (and not recover well, either because he doesn't drop a stick ever...but he knows I love him) and screw up a drum clinic intro *with his own music.* Clinics are all drummers, mostly. Everyone knew he made a mistake. Nobody booed him. We've ALL done it. He started over, that's all. "I could do that better." Drummers as a group are almost as cool as bass players.
See "Beginnings." See "Introduction." by Chicago. I've played like 12 years and *I* still go "what was THAT?"
Bands care about THERE, semi sober, easy to live with, that LISTENS (to the bass player if you have NO CLUE what's going on; you can ignore anyone else, lol. Half kidding, you want to pay attention for signals like stops and when they wanna end it. Drummers aren't known for this so you'll be as valuable as gold), does their work, and is NEVER late for the downbeat (the 1). And you can hear their snare (the backbeat, usually on 2, 4 of 4/4, which is most songs). Musicians are very supportive. Good ones will just FORCE you to go play with other live players or at some jam nite. That's how it was w me. I got to where I didn't care if I made a mistake. Even my beloved late Jeff Porcaro (Michael Jackson's Beat it, Rosanna, Pamela and all the other Toto hits, as well as "Lowdown" by Boz Skaggs...all are *unbelievably good.*) Jeff said and I quote "My timing sucks." I think he's INSANE.) Big picture. Nobody cares as long as you come back on the downbeat (the 1). Thank your musicians. Snuggle up to a metronome, grab some irl lessons for the right form and just DO it. Time's a wastin.
if you can find one, Tim.Weimer has a great drum.primer and snare drum rudiments video. He's dry but to the point. Drumate free rudiments is a good app, but you need to know the right form and sticking. Use your cell phone to videotape EVERYTHING. Watch your hands and the hands of great players live. Steve Smith. Bernard Purdie. Jeff Porcaro. Phil Collins. Ringo (good hands) Mick Fleetwood. Nick Mason. Karen Carpenter ("Remembering the Carpenters" is a converter to her camp. She's better than most people know, including drummers). Kenny Aronoff live "Jack and Diane" at a drum.clinic is fun, he's got a lot of good info in his book, too).
DO NOT stiffen up. You'll get hurt.

    • @windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823
      @windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 6 років тому

Joe Epps No. No, it's not. Lol. Any expert will tell you a student should have at least a worthy contender kit, as an expert can make total garbage sound decent.
I'd recommend an old Ludwig, a Tama Starclassic, Rockstar or Imperialstar kit. New and cheap, I'd go Sakae Pac-D. It's a WHOLE kit, WITH pedals and hardware. With good heads (Remo Ambassador) walking out the door and tuned by it's designer personally, it was 644.00. WITH 10% Chicago tax! I put an Evans hydraulic (gel) head on to control the "cheaper drum bad overtones." I'd like a DW3000 pedal, but the stock pedal is ok. No problems w HH pedal and it's holding a 2002 17" HH.
I'd never buy garbage because you'll just hate it, you'll outgrow it fast and it's pretty much worthless out of the gate. Ask around at specialty drum stores. EVERY drummer had spare stuff or their first kit pieces that are just collecting dirt. Plastic drums, like the '71 Tama Imperialstar I was gifted, will probably hold up better in "storage situations" of 20-30 years. It's been one of the best gifts I've ever gotten. And my other 3 kits are Vistalite (my 1st), Pac-D and TD-10 V-drums. Oh, my go-to is the Sonor Martini where the Tama is. Kick is it's only real disappointment. But it's a 12 x14, can't expect miracles. The cymbals and hardware will kill you, which is why I suggested the Pac-D. I like the 2002 17 Paiste and the AAX Sabian the best. 900 series Paistes are REALLY nice. You could sell them in .05 seconds if necessary and you'll love them the rest of your life. PLUS, they come in colors! Or Paragon series (Peart) or Signature Paiste. The Pearts come in a set of 20 China, 18 crash and 16. I like bright cymbals, so I never went for Zildi. Cleaning: Vaseline and a clean terry rag. Don't polish the logos. Ruins the value. I've yet to ruin a logo with Vaseline but be safe than sorry. It's easy to use: rub on wipe off.
You'll need a HH, a crash and a ride at the very least. 18 is most common crash size. JMO. Guitar Center offers financing. Gripe and ask for longer terms. Dont miss a payment and pay at least minimum asked for. Specialty drum shops like Vic's in Chicago know more but no financing. They also HAVE everything, including that weird little Sakae (which is bankrupt so grab it now). No sense paying it all upfront if you don't have to. There's no interest if it's all paid on time.

I've played lead guitar for my church for about 2 years now and more recently, by word of mouth, I heard that a sister church is in need of a drummer. When I heard that, I felt like God was calling me to rise up to the occasion and provide where there is a need, ya know? But I was confused at first because I was like.. "God? You know I can't play drums at all..." But I'm trusting Him and so far, it's going pretty well. Your videos have helped me out sooooo much. THANK YOU and God bless!

I am 25, 12 years ago learning to play the drums and play in church was one of my biggest desires. Shortly after my parents divorced and we stopped going to that church. Because of all the drama my desire for a lot of things went away. I've been up all night watching netflix, as I was just laying down I felt the Holy Spirit convict me for wasting my free time away watching tv. I started to look into things to do as a summer hobby and randomly stumbled across this video when I googled "how hard is it to play drums" I clicked it because you were a girl. I did NOT expect you to be a Christian or to play in your church. Most importantly that scripture... I know this isn't coincidence. I feel for the past few months that God has been re-igniting a passion I lost for my life again. I have never commented on a UA-cam video, I just want to thank you for being an inspiration and if you have time to please say a prayer for me as I will be praying for you! Hope you have an amazing day gorgeous :) thanks again!! Xo

Thanks for sharing your gift with us all! I'm going to be teaching my boys and learning with them as well. This summer we will be learning keyboard, drums and guitar together. My boys are 5 and 6 1/2. I want to share my love of music with them and hopefully inspire that same love within them. My primary instrument is the saxophone and other woodwind instruments but I think it'll be fun learning these others with my boys!

Lisa, I have wanted to play drums all my life since I was a little boy but had parents who did not want the noise in the house. I believe I was meant for manipulating objects because I spent my life touring as a professional slight of hand Magician (Illusionist). Now, in my twilight years (I'm 63), YHWH our God came thru because my new son-in-law needed to store one of his sets here at my house. I came UA-cam to find a "beginner drum lesson and found you. I felt comfortable with you right off and then when I saw the verse your put at the end of this video it confirmed that He led me to you sis! Thank you both.
