  • In this video I explore one of the most fascinating scenes omitted from Ridley Scott's 1979 film Alien. Piecing together the little footage that was filmed, and other visual aides, I go over the scene as remained in-tact in Alan Dean Foster's novelization.

Back when Alien was first shown in theaters, I saw a calendar in a Walden's bookstore depicting pictures from the movie. I never forgot how one of the pictures showed the Xenomorph's head in a profile view with a well-lit white background which made its skeletal face clearly visible under the translucent cranial cover. When I finally saw the movie years later (when I was old enough to watch it), I was perplexed at never seeing the Xenomorph displayed like that in any scene. This video finally solved that mystery! It was a still image from the deleted airlock scene, the very existence of which I was unaware. Thanks for making this awesome video!

I love the alien design. It's what got me into SFX and film. I pestered my mum to take me to see Alien when I was 6. She knew the manager of the local Odeon and took me. I had nightmares for years about being chased along my dark school corridor that had steam spurts and strobing lights. When the alien caught up to me... to my 6 year old mind... it was a dolphin with no eyes and double rows of silver teeth that walked on spiny face hugger legs with hands for feet... all black and shiny. Also to me it was three aliens... the skin crab, the snake and the big dolphin headed spider thing. Haha
Anyway, when it finally became more popular and I older, it became what it is: the best alien creature design of all time.
I like the skull within the dome. It makes the xenomorph more weird and in-human. The skull is there purely as a vestigial useless shape. Merely a remnant of the human DNA it uses to mesh together with. There is even a fused useless spine structure running across the crest. It's truly creepy as hell. It's also biomechanical. Steel chrome teeth and nails.
Cameron's xenomorphs were amazing but were made insect-like. Cannon fodder. Less alien and something familiar.

This is an awesome scene. It reinforces a few points that felt a bit lacking. 1, you cant kill it by making it bleed or you risk decompression and killing yourself. 2, Ash is the only one who could've set off the klaxon confirming he's helping it all along. 3, immediately before this scene they were discussing continuing with Dallas's plan to drive it in to the airlock, well the airlock is now damaged so not an option anymore.

The alien is an explorer, it's body resembles a space suit, with the tubes and vents. The massive helmet like head. It's exploration of the ship and its crew showed moments of pure curiosity only over shadowed by its hostility (and physical perfection lol). This scene fascinated my dad, who read the book. He was intrigued by the creatures curiosity in this scene.

@@garrybaldy327 That's a boring way to live. Creating a new interpretation of an art piece does not degrade the original. If you think the original was perfect, good for you, that doesn't mean you get to stop others from making their own version if they feel necessary. If the only way you are allowed to interact with an art piece is observe it and move on to the next one, that art looses any feeling of personal attachment from the viewers and becomes nothing more than just another in an endless see of art we consume for our entertainment without giving it a second thought. When something resonates with people, they tend to want to interact with it, like creating offshoot works and new versions. Denying them that is the same as denying them getting an attachment to that piece of art. After all, the most important thing about art is not what the creator wanted to tell, but what the audience got from it, as that is what decides it's legacy.

@rockn roll I don't think you understood my point. I was exclusively talking about your analogy, not your point.
Your analogy to BoB is flawed, because BoB is a mini-series split into 10 episodes. Movies can't (well technically they could, but nobody would watch a 10 hour movie) last that long. You say that you've seen people say BoB is 10/10, but slam movies for their pacing, but you are ignoring the massive difference between a series and a movie. Pacing works differently in different mediums.

    • @spacespz5947
      @spacespz5947 4 роки тому +1

@rockn roll People watch series with different expectations as to when they watch a movie, you can like a series of self contained well paced 1h episodes and dislike a 2.5h movie that decided that every character had to have its moment. The thing is, pacing is very important and a series like BoB does have a good pacing, you go in expecting a beginning and a end to that 1h pack, you are not supposed to load up on supplies and be eager to know the ending in one sitting. On a movie on the other hand we expect a complete experience in the time we dedicated to it and there are multiple cases of movies want us to be there for more than 2h with a good amount scenes that diverts from the main plot.

OpenMawProductions that’s your point of view not an absolute and definitive truth. I, for instance, like the egg-morphing scene that was cut and feel that it makes the « director’s cut » superior to the original. And though I love Aliens, in retrospect I feel that the whole Queen and hive principle makes the alien species a kind of space-ant, and that takes from the absurd and unthinkable aspect lifecycle of the alien we get to experience from the first installment of the franchise.

To me, the main thing this scene does is cast more suspicion on Ash. With Lambert and Ripley in the cockpit and Parker at the airlock, only one person could've thrown the klaxon switch at that point. The next scene would be Ripley rushing in to query Mother about Ash and discovering the secret order. It also finally shows the crew almost getting the upper hand on the alien. The alien was always a step ahead (thanks to Ash's assistance) and this shows the humans finally getting an opportunity to win.

I saw the film in New York , June 1979. I remember the cinema being almost empty. I also remember being exhaustively petrified. I ALSO recall never understanding what the monster really LOOKED like. This is the beauty of Ridley's masterpiece and genius. When the Alien burst out of Kane's chest, we saw a small, bloody phallus-like monster without legs screeching and racing off like a F1-car. As we came to understand it was growing, never did we envisage it growing bipedal legs. Maybe it would slither around like a snake, or crawl around on eight legs, spider-like.
It took many years for me to accept the Alien as a bipedal vertebrate.

One of the things this deleted scene explains is why the alien goes to the escape ship at the end, with the experience of the airlock and lost of its limb it runned to the only place of Notromo where there weren't blinking light and klaxons...

I think the Alien retains some of it's former host's survival-related knowledge. Kane would have known about the escape shuttle. Also, when they try to capture the chestburster with the net, before they discover Jones the Cat, they find that some of the lights in the corridors have been turned off/sabotaged (Parker says: "I thought we fixed this..."). That and hiding in the shuttle made me believe the Alien retained some basic survival instincts about it's environment.

They did film quite a bit of this. Turns out.
However, I don't think they filmed the part where Parker got "freight trained" by the Alien (ran over).
They also may not have filmed the moments Ripley and Parker were laying on the deck knocked out.
They had to be taken to the Auto-Doc.... for decompression syndrome sickness.
The continuity of this event was recorded in the final version ala... Ripley's bloody nose during the encounter with Ash (she had it before he attacked her).
This also explains why Ash chose to use a magazine to suffocate her... knowing she would gag on her own vomit and it would appear her decompression sickness caused her death ( to the others).

Nodak81 Why? I appreciate what Ridley brought to the table with the original film, but I have to say I am less and less impressed with his overall vision for the franchise. The more "Ridleyverse" films we get, the more I think the overall success of Alien was due to the wonderful script by O'Bannon and Shusett. I can only imagine if he did a remake of the original film it would naturally follow the Prometheus, Covenant, etc. story line that he is currently working on. With the number of problems that exist in those scripts, I don't have any hope that a Ridley remake of the original would be any good at all.

O'Bannon and Shusett are the reason why Alien worked, yes Scott did a great job directing but it was O'Bannon and Shusett that created 90% of the universe and everyone seems to forget that and give sole credit to Scott. Because he didn't write the screenplay for Alien or Aliens. He wrote the novelisation of the script, not the script or story. People need to realise that the novels were all tertiary forms of the media. The script -> movie -> book was how it went. Dan O'Bannon was the original story writer and David Giler/Walter Hill did Aliens and 3. Those are the only writers you want on the movies and I doubt Dan O'Bannon would want to be involved since his highly intelligent perfect organism has been turned into space ants by consistently degradingly bad writers.

A longtime fan, (I snuck in at 12 to see the movie in 79) I always marveled at the technical realism and amazing visuals of Ridley Scott, H.H Giger's necro influenced art, set designs and creature designs, and Dan O'Bannon, Ronald Shusett, David Giler and Walter Hill's excellent script. And thank you for your kind words about my video - I love hearing from fellow Alien fans and experiences of viewing the films.

Alien Theory -ahh yes! Alan Dean Foster. I forgot about his novelizations. I will definitely be reading his work! Thanks again for bringing this to my attention and for all your great work! I don't always agree but I really enjoy your insight and assembled imagery. I am a rabid fan of ANYTHING Alien since 79 and love parts and bits of every movie (even 3)....but the series certainly did not go where I imagined it would after #1 & 2. Would have liked humans and androids to NOT be the explanation of the zeno's origins and a more otherworldly vision of the space jockey race and their story. A great success in 79 Alien was the completely "Alien" and otherworldly feeling they created with the derelict, space jockey and the creature. It was so cool, so creepy and so not human in any way. It was wonderfully visceral and mysterious. I think we all left the movie thinking the next film would expand on those unanswered questions but for now those questions made the movie perfect. Well the genie is out of the bottle and can never be unseen now but yeah I still really mourn the loss of that cool sequel that never was. Although I do love Prometheus and Covenant, to me they are NOT the prequels to the 79 Alien story but an anthropomorphic twist heavily laden with religious symbolism and allegory. They are good movies that really make you think (which I love) but Scott really missed the chance to complete his genre setting non-human centric Alien space horror opera. It would have been a body of work for the ages!

Only drawback from adding this scene is the demystification of the Alien’s form. From the snaps you show, we’d see it more clearly, potentially spoiling the fear/wonder that persists right to the final scene when we get a clear view of the creature and it’s human-like shape.

I liked the scene in the book and I thought the filler line, "Just what you've been doing, Ash. Nothing. I've got access to MUTHR and I'll get my own answers-thank you.," was a little too perfunctory and you can tell by the audio that it was looped in. It doesn't match the ambient noise or tone of the scene perfectly. At the same time, you don't need an additional reason for Ripley to talk to MUTHR. They'd established in that same scene that Dallas was presumed dead and Ripley was the acting ships Captain. She had senior level access.

Having seen that magazine cover before, I always wondered, was anything with the Alien ever shot for that scene? The picture looks like the creature is missing an arm. Or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

+Michael Miller part of me is absolutely convinced that there's more footage that hasn't been shared by fox and DVD special features. Look how long it took them to release the Burke cocoon scene!

There has to be more. I remember the Cocoon sequence, after seeing the Anthology Blu-Ray set, there was more of the scene that was removed than the Deleted/2003 versions show

+Alien Theory did the Burke scene feature in a box set? I've only seen cam footage on UA-cam, I remember reading newts tale as a kid and the novel always wondering why it never featured in the special edition

    • @princeendymion9044
      @princeendymion9044 7 років тому +8

Yes, that was the first time it had ever been released in the Blu-Ray box set. It was deleted because Cameron thought that when Ripley would find Burke, he would still have a Facehugger attached to his face.

+Mr. Xenomorph makes sense for the time I always wondered if it had been a case of the unlikeliness of Ripley running across Burke in a massive complex, I feel the egg morph scene from scotts original would have been interesting to explore and would lend it self well to the established life cycle, I have a fan story in my mind that would incorporate it into the cycle

The initial Klaxon warning before Ripley could hit the toggle, was most likely initiated by Ash who was listening in communication between Parker and Ripley and succeeded in warning The Alien to move out of the airlock. Just a hypothesis.

I always thought Ash sets the alarm off, cause the com system was an open system, and heard Parker talk about trapping it

Personal opinion on that last question....yes, I would like to see a version of Alien with this scene restored. Furthermore, if editing software ever reached a level of realism that was widely available to anyone/everyone to use, much like editing software and game and app creation software is now, I think it would be interesting to see a new age of fan edits where fans could make their own edits of popular and classic movies and such, compare old VS new. Such a thing is already possible in animation if the animating editor has the right software(s) and skills and time, so live action fan editing that could create new realistic scenes (and maybe some voice acting to add to the mix) could lead to something interesting, with any and every movie having various edits to choose from to watch. Something like this has been done now, with the original Star Wars and Hobbit trilogy. Fans took the best of the Star Wars special edition(s), blended with the best of the old (Han shot first), then added their own SFX, editing and footage updating to make the older footage blend in seemlessly with the newer HD footage. As for The Hobbit, the fan edit I meant took out the scenes that were not from the book, and tried to make the film(s) as close to the original books as possible.

I remember the scene clearly when I read the book in 1980, before ever seeing the film, an exciting moment of suspense and sudden action and jeopardy. The bridge was among the first Nostromo sets to be finished so principal photography likely began with shooting as many bridge scenes as could be completed one after another. Since the bridge shots with Lambert and Ripley were photographed it was definitely intended to be finished, but it's reasonably likely the budget and schedule didn't permit it to be finished. Other possible reasons for its omission could be Ridley not liking the shots of the alien itself, looking too much like a man in a suit despite everyone's best efforts to disguise that trick. This was a scene where the alien couldn't be hiding in the shadows ready to jump out but had to be seen much clearer, not briefly glimpsed. Lastly, the alarm sounding to warn the alien is a bit too obvious a tip-off that someone onboard is protecting it, which isn't confirmed (and in the released cuts, discovered) until Ripley extracts answers from Mother five minutes later.

Mannix Flinn Yes, my opinion, based on thinking like a filmmaker and visualizing what kind of shots would be needed to complete the sequence. It would be a treasure to review Ridley's storyboard for the intended scene.

I agree on all this. It would have diminished the horror to see the Alien standing out in the open, and we don't need more clues about Ash before his reveal. I do like the scene in the book though.

Excellent scene in the book, but I am fine with the original version. Great job describing the scene, btw. The book also described how the incident got Ripley suspicious of Ash pulling the alarm.

I am still amazed at how well they duplicated the aesthetics of the Nostromo set for the Alien Isolation game, the room Parker moves through at 1:18 is represented in the game at different points with perfect detail.

Yes, I think it'd be very nice to see a recut complete version of this.
The closest to this scene restored is the DLC for Alien Isolation where you crawl around opening the airlock, and the Alien, curious as it is, walks inside, with the claxon starting before the door can open and it runs straight over the chosen player character ( _since you can pick one of the many for that moment_ ), only to then wake up with Ash standing above you, commenting on it.

there were a lot of little things in the novel that really made the novel Alien excellent, the "Professional Dreamer" as a profession concept was brilliant, and the room where couples could make love in a weight-less room covered in mirrors mentioned back in 1977 was astounding, true science fiction brilliance.

The Pro-Dreaming is intriguing. I imagine Ash's 'dreams' to be much like Replicant 'implants' to avoid suspicion. The free-fall cat house was one of Parker's dirty stories he tells Brett.
