At the time I was a young girl w/no support system, no direction, no mother figure to protect her from wolves- but now would be a total different story, lol.

Oh Miss Della...I wished I had opened my window. My abusive ex nearly killed me after 10 yrs of mental, financial and psychological abuse plus hitting on our kids. Our pastor said divorce was not an option and my faith was so strong I believed him.Finally after a broken eardrum, eye socket and facial bones.. I left and had him arrested and convicted and he spent time in prison. My children suffered greatly those yrs and still bear the scars although strong and proud and lots of momma's prayers, both graduating college in the medical field..praise God. A woman should never ever STAY with abuse...everyone suffers and she is risking her life..I wish I could have spoken with Della...we could have had a few related bittersweet laughs...see ya when I get there ma'am.

Some opt to be feared if they don't believe they can be loved. Of course most reactions are not deeply thought through and are deeply rooted. When you have the feeling or reality of little choice but to deal with abuse, it shapes you under pressure to survive. That's why a lot of mental abuse victims show traits of their abusers. It's something we need to teach children in school and emphasis more in life: coping skills and how the mind becomes dysfunctional.

The enemy (satan) will try to make you feel embarrassed, to keep you in the situation. And to keep you from telling other people about your experience in order to help them. Shes absolutely right, when someone starts abusing you, you believe them when they say they are gonna kill you. If you've been there, you know exactly whats its like, otherwise you have no idea, no matter what people think. Its not the same until you've been in those shoes yourself. Awful, terrible physical and mental anguish all combined together, that you never forget, especially if the abuser stalks you or doesn't leave you alone. Its a horrible thing to go through.

You are so right. In my opinion, It was the shame and embarrassment and women being trained to think that divorce and separation was a terrible thing. The dignity of the men being washed away and the people that the women could go to were afraid to suport them. Very sad! Now a days, women will have their entire family there in 5 minutes packing all of our belongings and telling us to leave and they'll make room.

The embarrassment of not being able to leave...like she said, FOR WHAT, to go to the streets...and funny how the one's judging you are the least likely to help!! How dare they?! That's another of the things that make being a victim of domestic abuse so horrible, the judgment of the world is probably the worst part and the part that shocked me the most...seeing the senseless critism, the ignorance and total lack of empathy. I bet if it happened to their daughter or loved one they'd think twice before pointing a finger. Not EVERYONE has a family that cares, or friends to turn to, a support system- because usually by the time the serpent has comfortably nestled around your neck, he'd used psychology to isolate you or drive them away. I’m living in an unheated garage, though I have blankets and a dog to keep me warm....I thank God. I was a abused by my husband for almost 10yrs who was an adult Sunday school teacher. I sit in my dining room table chair that was by the door for quick escape, my phone charged, my shoes ready, my dog leash, and a glass of water. It was so bad, once my husband started in, my dog knew the drill of going to the door to get out, we’d walk for hours rain, heat, or cold...until we knew he was passed out from his daily alcohol. He was life flighted to Tulsa icu from drinking and crashing a 4wheeler, was sent home from work for a week drunk, less than a yr later was fired. I use to look at the clock all day long counting the hours I had left till he came home. As soon as he got home until he passed out was hell. He didn’t persuade me that being a Christian was bad, though he did persuade me that I can be happier living in a garage. God bless others going through abuse, don’t waste your years thinking they’ll change even when they cause bad things to happen to themselves....if they won’t do it for themselves, they won’t do it for you. Every one is a child of God, straighten your crown and move on.

I have walked in those same shoes. My husband at the time abuse me so many times. He almost killed me when he was shocking me. He tried to run me down with his truck. I have ear and eye damage because of the abuse. I went through a whole lot more. It didn't even stop there even after the divorce. The abuse finally did stop when our children grew up and had children of their own. I had to forgive him of the things that he did to me so I could have peace in my own heart, mind, spirit, and soul. I could not let bitterness destroy my life because of the bitterness he had inside of him. Forgiveness set us free.

Our pastor said divorce was not an option and my faith was so strong I believed him.Finally after a broken eardrum, eye socket and facial bones.. I left and had him arrested and convicted and he spent time in prison. My children suffered greatly those yrs and still bear the scars although strong and proud and lots of momma's prayers, both graduating college in the medical field..praise God.

This comment is philosophically accurate and you needed more upvotes! Most abusers were abused and they usually are the less resilient types. Some opt to be feared if they don't believe they can be loved. Of course most reactions are not deeply thought through and are deeply rooted. When you have the feeling or reality of little choice but to deal with abuse, it shapes you under pressure to survive. That's why a lot of mental abuse victims show traits of their abusers. It's something we need to teach children in school and emphasis more in life: coping skills and how the mind becomes dysfunctional.

The embarrassment of not being able to leave...like she said, FOR WHAT, to go to the streets...and funny how the one's judging you are the least likely to help!! How dare they?! That's another of the things that make being a victim of domestic abuse so horrible, the judgment of the world is probably the worst part and the part that shocked me the most...seeing the senseless critism, the ignorance and total lack of empathy. I bet if it happened to their daughter or loved one they'd think twice before pointing a finger. Not EVERYONE has a family that cares, or friends to turn to, a support system- because usually by the time the serpent has comfortably nestled around your neck, he'd used psychology to isolate you or drive them away.

I’m living in an unheated garage, though I have blankets and a dog to keep me warm....I thank God. I was a abused by my husband for almost 10yrs who was an adult Sunday school teacher. I sit in my dining room table chair that was by the door for quick escape, my phone charged, my shoes ready, my dog leash, and a glass of water. It was so bad, once my husband started in, my dog knew the drill of going to the door to get out, we’d walk for hours rain, heat, or cold...until we knew he was passed out from his daily alcohol. He was life flighted to Tulsa icu from drinking and crashing a 4wheeler, was sent home from work for a week drunk, less than a yr later was fired. I use to look at the clock all day long counting the hours I had left till he came home. As soon as he got home until he passed out was hell. He didn’t persuade me that being a Christian was bad, though he did persuade me that I can be happier living in a garage. God bless others going through abuse, don’t waste your years thinking they’ll change even when they cause bad things to happen to themselves....if they won’t do it for themselves, they won’t do it for you. Every one is a child of God, straighten your crown and move on.

Someone I loved dearly died from seizures that resulted from a head injury she got from her abusive husband. She used to tell me growing up about her story and I vowed I would never stay in an abusive relationship. Never.

I have walked in those same shoes. My husband at the time abuse me so many times. He almost killed me when he was shocking me. He tried to run me down with his truck. I have ear and eye damage because of the abuse. I went through a whole lot more. It didn't even stop there even after the divorce. The abuse finally did stop when our children grew up and had children of their own. I had to forgive him of the things that he did to me so I could have peace in my own heart, mind, spirit, and soul. I could not let bitterness destroy my life because of the bitterness he had inside of him. Forgiveness set us free.
