Boni Hollóssy holding at redline for an excessive amount of time isn’t good. But the rev limiter is there to protect the engine. If you hit rev limiter every now and then you’re really not doing any damage. Hence “limiter”
Goes to show just how much of a boat anchor that iron block BP-ZE is. Adding 3x the displacement with a negligible sacrifice in weight is pretty spectacular.
Did i miss something? He said the car is 2600lbs. The k swapped one from a couple weeks ago was 2050lbs with no interior. K series, BP, and LS are all pretty similar weights though. But not if you account for the transmission and diff.
@fngr The guy said something like 2050lbs for the K miata. I don't think the interior of an NB is 500lbs. The difference was engine, trans, rear end, and interior mostly, as far as I could tell at least. Edit: to be fair this LS car also has aero and side skirts and soft top which adds weight over the K miata. In the K miata video at 3:44 he says the car weighs 2060lbs. They even have the same super heavy rollbar.
The build is on the right track(no pun intended), and has awesome potential. It just needs some fine tuning and that thing can be the perfect balance of everything you want. Awesome build! 👍🏻
I suspect a lot could be improved by getting clean air to that wing. The windshield creates a recirculation zone behind it, which is why wind deflectors exist. Either a hard top or cut the windshield off and convert it into a sports racer.
Car looks great and sounds it too however once you mentioned there being a bit too much sidewall I have to agree, that flex is going to cause a lot of problems on the corners with so much weight planted on them. Small rims with a lot of tyre is good for drag and off road.
Alright DP! Let's hear your ranking for Miata setups (strictly engine related as the cars tested vary so much): LS swap, K swap, Turbo, Supercharged, or built BP ITB. All are awesome options and great cars in the end! Looks like you had the most fun in the K!
I saw an aero test with a Miata comparing downforce with a hardtop compared to open when a similar style GT wing is used. Without the roof there was almost no downforce. That would probably improve rear grip.

I love the sound of many rev limiters. I can tell you many engines out there can see a lot more rev limiter than people realize. Especially a damn LS1.
Looks like a riot to drive and sounds great! The issues with corner exit wheelspin with the LSD and overall bounciness on track make me wonder if the dampers are shot.

No need to apologize for hitting rev limiter. Actually that part of the joy of ringing out a ride. Some of the best rev limiter hitting comes from V8s. Awesome job driving!
I'm running a 245/40/18 on the rear with my LS1 GTO. It hooks great with 430hp at the rear wheels. Also I think the hopping is from the engine not being in the powerband. LS1's don't have as much torque as the rest of the ls's so they like to rev more. Mine hops like that if your down below 2k RPM in third gear.
Not sure what the problem is here. I have a 471 rwhp LS3 in my NA Miata, and it's on 205 section RA-1s. Once the tires were hot, it had no trouble hooking in 2nd at my last track day. Also, the other Miata you reviewed that had brake fade issues ... I watched that video and made sure my brake lines were well insulated. With Castrol SRF fluid and suitable ducting to the front brakes, I had *zero* brake issues all day at the track.
Can you guys get Wyatt and crew from team O'Neil rally school out there? That would be my favorite crossover yet and I know they would put up some awesome times.
It's very interesting to see where a car like this is at on track. In a couple of weeks I'll be taking my #4G63510 to the track with similar tire to power and weight ratios. I'm running 205/45/16 RE71R with 355whp. I might turn down the boost a bit to enjoy it more and have the traction I need. We'll see how it does with my novice driving.
For sure. They’ve been upgraded to Ohlins and the car is apparently much improved. We’ll give it another try this summer, since they’ve made some offer big changes and we’d like to see how much faster it is now.
You can always detune the LS to suit the limits of the chassis/tire. Better to have more power than you can make use of (and just use less of it) than have too little power.
A very interesting test, I enjoyed that. I look forward to a further test with some of the traction problems solved. My NA BBR Turbo also has an RX-8 shift knob as it has a 6 speed 'box & LSD from an NB. I wonder if anybody has put the new Alfa Guilia V6 Quadrifoglio engine in a Fiat 124 yet? Awesome! But need more chassis as I suspected reading the title! But even with that, I still think it's just too much power for this car! Faster, but not as fun as if it had the suggested upgrades and 100HP less!
