Biography of Dracula: Vlad the Impaler (1431-1476)

- Wallachia in the 15th century was an unstable region with many pretenders to the throne, local feuds and external threats from the ever-expanding Ottoman Empire and the mighty Hungarian Kingdom. Among the long list of rulers was a 15th-century Wallachian prince - Vlad III Dracula. He ruled over the principality three separate times during his lifetime. Most of the information regarding his life has been pieced together with fragments of surviving sources, as many details have been destroyed during Ottoman invasions, wars and time. He enjoyed another nickname, namely ‘Tepes’, which means as much as ‘Impaler '. And there is a good reason - Vlad III may very well have been one of the bloodiest and most brutal rulers of his day - and that says a lot.
Thanks to my good friend David for narrating Vlad's letter.

👏welldone.🏆
Good job telling the stories about achievements of Vlad Tepes. I have not expected to touch such complicated historical facts in eastern europe and Balkan. I'm thankfull to you for depicting the turbulent life of Dracula
Another king that ruled his country for three times at roughly the same time as Vlad III was Karl Knutson of Sweden of the Bonde family. He is not as well-known internationally as Vlad III, but for the Nordic countries he is an important, and very colourful, character.
Interesting video, even though as another commenter said, the subject of Vlad the Impaler has been discussed many times before, and yet there's still new information that surfaces, like how Vlad helped Matthias in various battles during his time in Hungary, as you talked about in the video. So if I may add some info on the subject myself (I won't talk about pronunciations as that was already addressed in another comment):
- After Vlad's first reign, he fled to the Ottoman Empire and then went to Moldavia, as said in the video, and it is more likely that he stayed in Moldavia at the court of Bogdan II, his uncle. However, after Bogdan's assassination by Petru Aron in 1451, he and his cousin, the future Stephen the Great, fled to Transylvania where they asked for help from John Hunyadi and that's when Vlad got the task of defending Transylvania's borders. After he got the throne in 1456, he helped his cousin, Stephen, take the throne of Moldavia from Aron a year later in 1457.
- Vlad didn't construct the Poenari castle, he renovated it with the "help" of the boyars that helped assassinate his father and older brother.
- Interesting that you didn't mention his raids on the Saxons. After the death of Hunyadi, he helped Michael Szilagyi in his rebellion in Transylvania while also punishing the Saxons for supporting other pretenders to the Wallachian throne, namely Vlad the Monk and Dan III, but he failed to catch either of the pretenders. He will have other conflicts with the Saxons later because of this, until he defeated Dan III in 1460.
- Regarding Vlad's army and his campaign south of the Danube in 1462. He possibly didn't split his forces during his raid. He marched his army following the Danube, however, his army was very fast, and possibly just like that of Stephen, it was fully mounted as well, with infantry travelling on horseback and dismounting before battle. After he got the throne in 1456 he actually created a small professional standing army of about 5000 or 6000 men which was made up of his curteni (courtiers) which were his knights with some of them likely fighting as light cavalry and the so called trabants who were German and Hungarian mercenaries from Transylvania, some of who as you mentioned in the video were armed with handguns and used cannons (culverins).
- In 1462, Vlad also commanded a portion of the Hungarian Black Army at the siege of Chilia where he defeated his cousin. After Vlad was imprisoned, Stephen would eventually take Chilia.
And that's all I wanted to share :)
A man who defends his land and his people, can do no wrong. Vlad was in his right for his brutal vengeance.
are you serious?
@@mbathroom1 of course?
@@bertchintus4103 yeah impaling people is so good amirite?
@@mbathroom1 yes it is. Most of the men that were impaled were captured soliders, criminals, or corrupt estates-men anyway, so definitely
@@bertchintus4103 yeah because impaling soldiers is so heroic. I bet you if the Ottomans did the same thing, you'd be crying about the horrible torture they did
Congrats on you reaching 100,000 points. You deserve them.I do like your stories, they are very interesting.
Thank you Bernard.
This is the documentary I’ve been waiting for … so much good information without all the sensationalism that clutters many features on Vlad Dracula. Bravo!! I would love to peruse through your bookshelves. I bet you have a wonderful library. Thanks!!!
Thank you for the kind words, Todd!
He's still revered as an unrivaled hero in Romania to this day.
Actually to most of the balkans.
I personally put him in the same category as Corneliu, albeit Vlad did do more for Romania in the long run.
lol he impaled half the romanains but ok
@@semregob3363 not even close, there's very little first hand accounts of him doing that to his own people in anything approaching mass quantities. Further, he didn't rule all of Romania, but a portion of it called Wallachia. Most of the tales arose from prints from the other side of Europe. In his part of the world, he's regarded as highly as George Washington is in the United States.
Love your channel man
Nice video! 👍
Congratulations on 100.000 subscribers!
Thank you Dennis!
your channel Is so underrated, I really like the maps and the effort put into this ,you deserve way more subs
This channel is brilliant, Thanks heaps brother..
I appreciate that!
Nice visuals and background. I can see the improvements throughout your vids. Interesting topic this Vlad Tepes. P.s. looking buff in that turtleneck boy
Excellent work...scribed up....thank you sir...
As an Albanian, we must Love Vlad Dracula for what he did by protecting Vllahia against agressors ottomans
This is an fantastic video. I appreciate you for your deep research. thanks for this amusing video
YES IT HAS COME
btw can you make videos on the italian wars ?
From all the others videos I saw about him this is the most poorly informed one I saw. HistoryMarche did the best job of them all.
Ottoman Turks don't win any of the battles when they invaded Wallachia, they just drop Radu there and the coward boyars defected to him, while Mehmed the II stated he can't defeat a man who is able to do such great things and who is able to do more. Vlad fled to Hungary as his throne was occupied by his brother and go to Mathias to ask for military help to reclaim his throne. Vlad is imprisoned because Mathias Corvinus don't wanted war with Ottoman is another theory, another one, is because the Saxon where angry at Vlad and wanted him dead so he imprison him to protect him, and the third one is the one told in the video that state about the secret alliance with Turks. The most plausible is the first theory, that Mathias wanted peace with Ottomans as he had other plans, he prove this when pope send him money to aid Vlad in the crusade against Ottomans, but he used the money on personal affairs.
Around his death there are many theories, the most widely accepted one is that he is assassinated by his boyars as they fear him because they where the one who defected to his brothers, not that hie died on battlefield.
This vide talk mostly about his cruelty and war, but they omitted to say about his administrative reforms that enriched the country, and one of the reasons that bring him in the fight with the Saxon from Transilvania, who where displeased that their mercantile monopol was cut off by him when he demanded that Wallachian merchants to benefit from the same rights or them to pay taxes when they use Wallachia in their trade with Ottomans as the Wallachians merchants do when they trade in Transilvania. They where displeased that they lost their rights so they support his rivals at throne, this is why he invade Transylvania and pillage their area. Also Saxon where the one who spread rumors about him being a monster.
During his reign no one dared to stole and live by thievery, and he also supported the middle class.
Great video.
Thanks!
Charles Martel! The Hammer! Battle of Tours is debated as to its significance - though both Muslim and Christian writers at the time attest to the effectiveness of Martel's training and his force's ability to repel the Moors. Seems likely all of mainland Europe could have been converted had Martel failed or was slain at the Battle of Tours.
Great video as always. As for vlad i do not think he was that brutal based on his age perceptions. He was demonized in the 19th century due to brams. Many loards did worst massacres than him. He was a great leader and a very good tactician. As for radu it is rumored that he was the sultans lover.
Must have been the one who got the closest to kill an Ottoman Sultan, almost like Tamerlan 📜
Serbs killed Murat 1 in the Battle of Kosovo .
@@onyxabier4502 and ottoman kills also Serbian king
tamerlane couldve killed him..he just decided not to..bayazid was his prisoner
it's harsh for a little principality to be caught big empires (bigger foes) in the middle ...it took so long ,almost 5-6 centuries for Valahia (Tara Romaneasca) to form Romania in the 19th century (Romania was official international recognized in 1878 after Treaty of Berlin )(Wallachia is a name gave by foreigners) ,us, romanians says about Valahia - Tara Romaneasca (The Romanian Land)
Si tara Romaneasca a fost cuprinsa din ce regiunii, Valahia?
You are a Romanian nationalist. And Vlachs as a nation still exist in the Balkans and especially in Eastern Serbia.
Long live Vlachs, we are not Romanians.
It seems like a lot of people are doing a vid on Vlad.. (I am a big-old- history fan) Why did you choose him? I am just curious.. Excellent work! I enjoyed this very much.. carry on!
Vlad is one of the great men of history who truly embody transcending virtues such as bravery, duty to your land and people, and fighting because it's right, no matter how the odds are stacked against you. He was in charge of a very small principality with a very small population, against the largest empire at the time, who could field 200-300 thousand strong armies like it was nothing. Against all odds he fought for his land and that makes him a great man. Skanderbeg from Albania is another good example.
@@bertchintus4103 Very true.. a little over the top at times.. But then war has a tendency to do that to people.. Good example Skanderbeg.. they should do something on him. Same basic time period though he lived to be an old man of 62 unlike Vlad's 46 years.. a good history of the area and the people would also be a good one.. But it would take at least an hour and a half just to hit the highlights.. Thanks Burt.. have a great weekend my brother.. Carry on!
@@tinkmarshino that's true, but the way I see it, a man who defends his land and people, can do no wrong. His "brutal vengeance" is justified and accepted. Have a good weekend my man! Peace!
@@bertchintus4103 Well Bert.. I see your point and I partly agree with you.. but the killing of women and children and old folk, especially in those days when they could harm no one, goes against my grain.. But I spent a long time in war zones and have seen it done and justified.. it is just I can not do it..
Congratulations bro...
I'm interested...
Vlad the LEGEnd........... (Not just the Impaler!)
always love hearing and reading his tale
who do you think was superior Skanderbeg or Vlad Dracula?
Good question. I'd say Skanderbeg, overall more successful and not famous for exceptional brutally in particular.
@@Artur_M. fair enough skanderbeg was quite respected for his military ability and Val's brutality is one of the reasons I find him so interesting. he must have had quite the problems
I would say each has his own strategy based on what they had at their disposal. I believe both were great figures. I think drakula was more brunt and more tactician in guerilla warfare while kastrioti was better in diplomacy and he had a more united country compared to drakula.
@@theodorossarafis7370 If we add to them John Hunyadi, Stephen the Great, Mathias Corvinus and Michael the Brave, that's a solid 'tier list' material. 😉
@@Artur_M. couldnt agree more
Not sure what you´think. But maybe you can make a video with a different spin..like the economic reforms of Vlad Dracula. It's something I have not seen done, and the angle would definitely be interesting.
Video idea if you were interested. I think the holy roman emperor Frederick II would make a good subject for one of your videos. He's a fascinating figure that I haven't seen many videos made on his life.
That is a great suggestion - thank you very much!
Make an episode about Stephen the Great of Moldavia please
Hey house of history this idea came to me a few days ago. I think it would make for a different kind of history video. Could you make a video on parenthood? Specifically how women took care of their kids especially new borns. My sister just had a baby and oh boy is she a handful. It got me thinking how on earth did parents do it back then? Especially during the stone age. I cant imagine how hard it must of been. Thanks
Many Vlad's in my country (Romania). Vladut, Vladut. Tepes pronounced Tzepesh : )). Dracula I believe was a name given to him by Bram Stoker, because he impaled his enemies.
Peculiar ideas Vlad really got ----- we still get surprised after 600 years -------
True hero
wow
I don't know if you have this already, but do you have some historical info on our neighbor, Ungaria (aka Hungary)? The origin of the Hungarian people and their language, Attila the Hun? I've heard that they originate from Asia, but it's hard to believe, possibly. The Turkish and Hungarian language sound very similar to me and I've heard that their is some intertwined history regarding that? It would be interesting to have some historic knowledge on that.
Hey Bianca, thanks for your nice comments. I recently created a video about the Battle of Lechfeld, where the Magyars faced Ottokar I. I am looking into creating more videos about Hungary and/or Romania.
I didn't know if could stomach this video 🤢but I also never knew Dracula was real!.Horrifically fascinating.Thank you. Some of theses historical people are shockingly wildly greusome.I don't want to imagine it.😖it's disturbing hay.I saw the pictures of the Armenian genocide where women were crucified once . I read sometimes those impaled only died after a few days😭 and sometimes the stakes were not sharpened😫.This is stuff not even our worst nightmares are made of.
Who's Simon Belmont, historically, to Dracula?
Peter Cushing
Janos Hunyadi himself
If he was friend with Stefan Batory, definitely he was good guy for me🙄
Vlad' life is too complex to encapsulate in an 18 min video. However; there are some points that are quizzical, Vladislav II of Wallachia was a member of Societas Draconistorum, a Catholic organization implying he was already a Catholic, therefore why the conversion in order to marry a Hungarian Catholic? Do you recommend any books on Vlad as there are too many discrepancies depending on source. Finally Vlad Tepes was a capable military leader, his battles and tactics alone, require their own video.
The real dracula vlad the impaler
The Dragon's Order was given by the Holly Roman Empire. The Emperor give it to Vlad ,not the Hungarian King.
In Nuremberg was given to Vlad the Order of the Dragon, not by the Hungarian King, but by the Emperor of the Holly Roman Empire.
I wouldn't be able to mispronounce all the names even if I tried.
I should have said subscribers not points.
Mehmed the Conqueror 💪
Definitely coming soon - but first his predecessors (Bayezid I to Murad II) in the upcoming video about the Ottoman Empire!
kh
Can't say I'd blame him.
you should buy a better microphone
Which one?
Narrator's accent is terrible; bad pronunciation!
Eh i have seen worse.
