2 years later and your video is still helping us out - Thanks.
Great to hear! Thanks Bob!
BD, you're a star! As far as I know you're the only person on UA-cam to explain flight modes. Loads of clever folk who rather than admit they don't know, they waffle on a load of bollocks. Thank you very much :-) xxx
Thanks for the good words Patrick!
I agree it's difficult to find detailed explanations of F-Modes. I just wish there was a BD out there providing this kind of learning for glider enthusiasts. Many issues are common, but there are some specific challenges to setting up a full-house sailplane.
Brother your videos are always the best tutorials…I literally just said I need to learn different flight modes for my new plane and your the first person I thought of and BAM…there it is a flight mode setup video. Keep doing big things Brother we all appreciate you
Greatly appreciate that feedback and praise!
Thank you, very helpful and I've just programmed my first AR636! Wish I'd done this with my others 🙂
Great to hear!
Flight modes are very useful when you put them on the flap switch. It allows you to have separate aileron and elevator trims in each position of the flaps. You'll be able to trim the elevator for the proper glide speed without having to go into the flap system menu and set the elevator mix using trial and error. Plus, you can trim the ailerons to eliminate any turning tendencies caused by slightly different flap angles from one side to the other.
Yup, thats a good method i use as well...
@@BDTennessee Have you made a video showing how to set up flight modes on the flaps switch?
@@txkflier i have it in cue to be published. This video was a overview of how to use and change settings.
MOST INFORMATION,BEST PRESENTATION,ON UA-cam,,,,,,😎
Thanks DBC!
Keep the videos coming, you do a fantastic job.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks sir!
Excellent Explanation!
Thanks Rudy!
BD, thanks for all of your contributions to Spektrum education. I'm just now setting up first full-house 4m glider and needing to understand operation of flight modes and Camber. A quick question if you or others are still monitoring this. Can someone explain the "Priority Switch" use on the Flight Mode screen (NX8 Tx)? Thank you
BD, what is the flight mode wizard used for this has come up on my screen and it has different settings but ,I don't know what they're for do you!
Flight modes can be used for trims in radio.Flight modes in receiver is for AS3X and Safe settings.
This is so helpful! Couldn’t figure out how to get this working and my L39 kept wanting to roll on me with flaps deployed.
I had the Freewing L39 do the same with flaps at first
@@BDTennessee couldn’t be happier to say, problem solved thanks to you sir!
@@Phils_RC glad video helped :)
Great videos! Thanks!! I think this is a "flight modes" question... I have a taildragger airplane with an AR630 receiver and an NX6. I have a terrible time with fish-tailing on takeoff. Could you do a video on the best way to set-up an AS3X receiver and NX6 radio for better ground control on takeoff?
I'm currently using 3 flight modes for Standard (no AS3X correction), Mid AS3X correction, High AS3X correction. I'd like to put a 4th flight mode on a 2 position switch that I only use for takeoff, and I suspect will only utilize heading hold. Thanks!
Tail draggers can be handful sometime. Some more than others. Rudder gain turn up for takeoff, lowering rate or adding expo are all ways to help. Keeping it on one switch could do AS3X off , Take-Off Rate, and Flying Rate could be a route if you want to have rates to designate each mode.
Thanks for the great videos. I have a question that is probably easy to answer but I can"t figure out. When doing flight mode setup to a 3 position switch and toggle the switch the bottom line where it says flight mode it goes from 1 to 2 and then back to 1 in the 3rd position. Should the 3rd pos. say flight mode 3?
Yes.Something is throwing it off. Does it say FM2 on 3rd mode or readout on screen or both?
I've got a Carbon Cub S2, and I've added the NX8 to compliment my stock DS that it came with. I'd like to use trainer mode for my kids, and had no trouble using your videos to get that done. What I'd like to mimick with my 3 flight modes, are the 3 flights modes that comes stock with the plane (beginner, intermediate and experienced). Could you recommend the settings that might get me close to that change in performance so I can tone it down in the case of needing to save it. It has defaulted to the green light of SPEED and crashing...
Thanks so much for all the great videos! I've watched many of them!
You referring to how it goes to green when you give student control?
@@BDTennessee, it simply goes to green when I power on the plane and NX8. I can’t get it to switch to any other “flight modes”, but I have the remote setup to change flight modes and even the audio to go with it, but that light doesn’t change, and the end points don’t change to calm things down
@@BDTennessee I think I’m stuck in beginner or intermediate mode, which is massively affecting the throw of my controls. This little Carbon Cub should fly pretty sporty…but it absolutely doesn’t. It’s got the power, but my controls are all locked down to nearly no movement, it flys like a little old lady drives. It’s boring!
Another aspect of this to remember is that flight modes for transmitters and flight modes in the Smart receivers are two separate things. You can set up flight modes in the receiver and none in the transmitter for example which tends to be the default for HH's BNF models with SAFE enabled and switchable ON/OFF (AS3X is on all the time). Might be a another good video talking about these differences and how to make good use of them.
Good points.I thought about doing that as i had that conversation few weeks back explaining RX and TX flight modes.
@@BDTennessee yes, please this would be something I am very interested in, thanks BD..
Great video, going to use flight mode for a little up elevator for hand tossing Jets, Jeff in LA USA
Yes sir, good for launch modes!
Nice job of a quick and simple explanation. Also, one of the more useful features I use in the Trim Settings is Crossed. Can't tell you how many times I've maidened a new airplane only to find it dramatically out of trim. Instead of manually holding aileron stick (right hand on Mode 2) to compensate then trying to use the same hand to adjust the trim for aileron, setting the trims to Crossed moves the aileron trim to the left stick and it's far less hair-raising to make the trim adjustment with the left hand trim button.
Remember to change it back to Normal after readjusting the control surfaces or dialing in the trims.
Also a good idea on using cross settings! I just hold right stick and use left hand to trim.
Same here...as a flight Instructor at our field, I tell new students to cross their trims on each of their new planes. It's a no brainer for maiden flights.
Thanks for your fast reply, I set some voice alerts on the NX6, then I just remember appear that display saying: "Fly mode 1" and when I toggle switch of fly modes repeat fly mode 1, fly mode 2 fly mode 3, then I move the throttle stick and said: throttle low, throttle high, display is on red background and doesn´t stop and neither the left buttons nor the roller button can´t change that.
Thanks again four your help.
Your welcome! Glad it worked out!
great information and video
Thanks duke!
Hi Great videos. Can you do a video on flight modes showing how to combine multiple conditions to one switch to build a complex flight mode for things like stall turns or hammerheads, etc?
Thanks Rick! Ill look into making that video
@@BDTennessee That would be great. I'm having a hard time with Modes. I can get one switch to work but 2 and 3 it getting all mixed up. Too many audio events, switches get combined. I know its lack of understaing them but there isn't a lot of info out there explainging it. Thanks Jack
This is great info but what if I have a flying wing that is setup to use Elevons? I don't see the flight mode menu with that wing type. I have been trying to set it up using mixing but cannot figure out how to do it properly. It seems like this should be simple but there is no elevator to mix to in this wing type. I only have Throttle to Left Aileron and Throttle to Right Aileron mixing and it just doesn't do a simple trim adjustment based on throttle setting like I want. EDIT: OK, I see that I did not turn on Flight Modes in the setup menu. This now works as per video, I just wish it would automatically change modes based on the position of the throttle which is the main thing I was trying to do in the first place. I believe the sail plane guys have their throttle setup like this.
Glad you got it figured out :)
hey BD I hope you can help. I am using the RF 95s simulator. I did the flaps.elevator setup. Went to mix and highlighted LT/elevator, set 50% in. Flew and used the LT switch to bring trims in to where I wanted them, then took the doulded value in the Mis out by half. Had all three where I wanted in all flap positions. But when I switched out of safe the plane immediately into a nose down pefect outside loop. I can not figure out how to stop that. If I adjust the LT it screws up my SAFE trim. Using a P51 and a F18. Any ideas? Do I need a real receiver? That would make the simulator kind useless>
Thanks
Jack
Setting up by the video everything will work like normal. You may have 2 things conflicting.
BD Can you explain how to set up 4 flight modes (NX10) I want to have my G switch with AS3X enabled and 3 diffrent Rates and expo. then I would like Flight mode 4 to activate SAFE. Or if there is another way to do it please explain. Keep up the good work!!
Forward Programming > AS3X settings > FM Channel Switch G, Dual Rate / Expo assign all 3 surfaces to Switch G.
I would have Safe button separate or 3 modes. (AS3X low ,AS3X High, Safe or AS3X of, AS3X on and Safe.
Side note: I wouldnt put AS3X and Dual Rate/Expo on Same switch...
Hi some how I have got on my NX6 Warning Hold Pos1 but can`t remove it,how would I remove it. I have just bought a Blade 230 S Smart, but in the menu on the radio there`s two which one do I put in my saved planes. thanks for your help Eddie
Need to remove the switch from flight mode or just use a new/clean template.
Use the model number that matches yours.
It will probably take me awhile but right now as a new guy I don't understand when/why you would use 3 different trim Flight Modes for a given model. Is it only trims that can be associated with Flight Modes or is this just one example?
Being new it took me awhile to understand Rates and Expo but now I've actually programed them and use them for my three planes bound to my NX8. I've been referring to my settings for SAFE vs. AIX3, etc. as flight modes, should I be using a different term? I use voice assigns "Beginner mode", "Intermediate mode" and "Experienced mode" for my 3 way switch.
Ps. Thanks for the info.
Trims are associated with flight modes. It allows you to make the plane trim for different scenarios with a switch. Mode 1 could be low speed can add up elevator to hold the nose up or help with landing you dont have to ride the stick. Mode 2 for normal flight so 50-75% so fly level.mode 3 for speed runs down elevator so it plane will fly level at full speed (100%) and not climb.
Side note: These can be used for correcting Attitude with flaps.
@@BDTennessee Thanks. I got the idea.
@@BillKisel Can you share how you were able to assign BEG, INT, and EXP mode? I also have an NX8, but can't seem to assign the 3 modes for the SAFE feature.
@@EDJe728 Hi Eric... What model and receiver are you having trouble with? Some will have only two flight modes, e.g. SAFE and AIX alone for my UMX Turbo Timber but my AeroScout has 3 flight modes (SAFE, Less limited bank, roll and pitch and you bring back to level and AIX alone.
Check the manual for your model, all of mine have the flight modes assigned to channel 5 of the receiver. You then just have to, in your transmitter, set channel 5 to the switch you wish to use for changing flight modes. [I always use the same 3 position switch even if the model only has two flight modes.]
Hope this helps.
@@BillKisel Thanks for the reply, I also have the aeroscout with the 3 modes. I was expecting the same 3 options when I got the Draco with the AR637TA receiver. But it seems there are only 2 modes: (SAFE with self levelling and bank protection) and 2) SAFE off with just AS3X.
I only want the bank protection, no self leveling for the Draco. There are some receivers that allow you to customize the levels of safe (see vid below), but mine is not one of them.

Are F-modes tied to Dr/expo?? Can you set up the Dr/expo in F-mode?
You can tie them together for extra features. However using the D/R and Expo screen allows different rates without flight modes.
Appreciate all your videos. I bought a Carbon Cub, moved to a DX6e and now want to move it to a MX8. Found a BNF and started to modify. It disappeared and made me one more UNUSABLE model. How can I erase my bulging hanger of UNUSABLEs? Would appreciate any help. Julian
Thanks for the positive feedback! Go into settings > system setup > Model Utilities > Delete Models
Thank you for your help. Didn’t want to delete a good model and couldn’t chose the UNAVAILABLE. Your directions got me to validate models. Duplicates and Unavailables deleted.
@@TheBrowLineTrolley awesome,glad it worked out!
“Great” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks!
I fly motor gliders mostly. On my former transmitter, I used to have a switch that would change the function of my left stick from throttle to crow break. You never need them simultaneously anyway, and having crow breaking on a stick in stead of a switch means you can use as much breaking as you need.
But so far I am not succeeding to make this work on my NX8. I hope for an instruction video that will point it out...
No answer in one year? I suppose this must be possible on an NX8... there seems to be no instruction video on the subject either...?
what is the difference with dual rate ? TK
Dual rate changes control rate. Flight modes change trims...
I have an NX10 and can't figure out how to do the following: I want to have two flight modes and use Switch A as the two-position flight mode switch. I want Flight mode 1 to let me use switch G to set high, medium and low rates and expos for that flight mode. Flight mode 2 will let me set different rates and expos using switch G. For example in Flight mode 1 and Switch G position 0 I want high, mid and low rates to be 100% and expo to be 0% for all flight surfaces. In Flight mode 2 and Switch G position 0 I want high rates to be 85% for all surfaces and 25% expo and so on.
So, the end result is that you would essentially have three different rates and expos settings for each flight mode. The reason for this is that I am flying a Lemon-Rx 7 channel plus that wants 100% rate and 0% expo in auto leveling mode. However, I want my normal mode high rates to be, for example, 80% rate and 25% expo. Mid rates 50% with expo at 20% and low rates 35% with expo at 15%.
I know my RadioMaster TX16S can do this because you can perform simple or complex logical switch functions but can Spektrum NX10 do it?
I love your videos!
Thats a logical setup which is a advantage of open tx. I would set 3 way switch for the rates i want (Low ,Med,High). Also when lower down to 35% rate your killing the resolution of the servos. When flying self leveling id go to the highest rate and just fly it.When getting to this point of customizing id think moving past self level mode would be in the near future.
Thank You so much for your excellent setup Videos 👍👍👍👏. I am from Austria and new in the RC Flight Hobby 😉👍I learned a lot from your Videos. Hey do you have any idea what to do if your nx8 won't turn on? Like I'm very frustrated I've just bought it brand new didn't even do a single flight first the calibration got messed up then it just shut off and won't even turn on like when I hold down the power button the logo comes up and then it shuts off again any idea? And the damn horizon hobby is so ridiculous that I can't even get a hold of them and easy return is so damn hard
Did you try to update?
What happens when you plug in charge cable, does green light come on?
Yes it charges and everything
It's fully charged, I've already updated and everything I tried to factory reset because my Calibration was completely messed up and it reset it then this happened idk how to update now?
It won't even turn on idk what happened
@@HeyitsSyed do you know what version of firmware was originally on radio?
When calibrations messes up,just go back in and calibrate again...
Do this worh an NX8+!
Yes! NX8+ is samer radio with slightly bigger battery and newest firmware with channel unclocked already installed.
