As an elder in the Industry, there are so many inaccurate details in this video....too many to name. Anyway, if any artist calls Pinye a gatekeeper, because he would not play their video on The Beat (and subsequently blame their lack of progress in their music career because if this) did not have a good music strategy in the first place. How can artists place so much weight of their career on one TV show. Weird!!! Anywho, this is just my simple opinion. What do I know about artist management?? Pinye will always be a G.O.A.T
David Muriithi... you know your memories and experiences will forever beat my research! I have had some comments point out some inaccuracies and... all I can say is I'm working on fact checking better in the future! Also, the video seeks to air both perspectives rather than negate the fact that Pinye is a legend 😅 Anyway, as a fan, I appreciate that you took the time to check out my work :)
I think you should refrain from commenting if you do not truly understand DJ Pinye's character. He deserves the position, the status, and the opinion that the MAJORITY currently holds about him.
I've grown up in Pinye's time and I agree with him fully. There was a lot of crap music in Kenya and if you researched, you'll notice most of it never went past our borders. Pinye is a legend and a pioneer of all the things you have spoken about. Give him his flowers at least because he had a right to not agree with everyone too. Kenyans love being lied to and told sweet things instead of the hard truths.
The gatekeeping during this era was evil! Kenya was way ahead of other nations in Africa musically but because of the Kenyan self hate and Moi'sm, cronyism and conflict of interest. How do you produce a show on national Tv and manage some of those in your catalogue? We are still feeling the effects more than 2 decades later. Guys like Khali took another 10 years to be where they at, something they could have achieved in 2 or 3 years, but Mungu ni nani, they have seen even bigger success now?
True. They were pushing a particular trend and artistes from particular hoods. If you are keen you, you will notice that the first musicians to hit were upper middle class types from formerly leafy estates like Langata, South C and South B. Even the first radio and TV presenters, DJs and Producers were from these hoods so the cartel was huge cartel.

He'd play guys from such areas or those who could afford to pay for play, or be those that were unstoppable so had no choice but to play. Dj Pinye revolutionized the Kenyan music industry.
