  • It's finally here, the laser-cut DIY Afghan Box Camera flat-pack kit, a collaboration with Ethan Moses of Cameradactyl Cameras, that we're calling the ABQ Box Camera. In this video Joe begins assembling this advanced design kit, that employs linear bearings for film gate focus and vertical slot chemical tanks.

Thank you Joe for this series of videos ... here in Iraq we have similar camera till the 80th we call it solar camera couse you have to take the picture in sun light. It have a bellow and a small red light window to watch the development through an eye tube with wooden slide shatter . for the chemical there is a side drawer for that. when I'm in the primary school and they request a personal picture from students .... its time to stand still in the sun light ... for me it was a joy to watch the camera man making all magic and the steps of taking the picture ... you inspired me to make my first pin hole camera and spend a good time playing with it like a kid in Christmas day ... thank you

Hello, from Canada! I also enjoy Joe's creative use of alternative photography techniques. Thank you so much for your excellent story on using Afgan Box Cameras, and your use of pinhole cameras. I enjoy using mine. Mostly I use paper negatives, and am always surprised by the results! I agree, Joe is a creative genius, always stretching his viewers to be more creative.

I love these cameras! A tip for the inside corners, I used black caulking. Didnt have to glue in strips.

Nice camera and design! You can use locknuts instead of two nuts. Great video :)

I really want to build one! From a kit with directions though... not with all the figuring on my own!

Was the wood cut with a CO2 laser? It is going together very well. Is it for sale? Ethan could cut out model airplane parts as well.

Yes, a CO2 laser. He hopes to have DIY kits available soon.

"You can never have too many clamps" amen. Every new project or build I find out I either don't have enough of them or I lost one. Very annoying.

Any reason you didn't just use nylocks instead of doubt nuts?

It’s what we had on hand, Ethan stocks these fasteners for many other projects. I’d expect the final shipped version of these kits to have some changes.
