This is one of my fave things about Squeak, her cuddly toy obsession! It's so lovely to watch how proud she is of it. ☺️ What a beautiful little girl she is. Not so little these days!
@@JaceyDemy Just consider that Chestnut, Spike, Chonkers etc. are adults, but I can't stop comparing them to babies because of their illegal cuteness ❤️❤️❤️
While it's pretty obvious to all of us but apparently not to the hoomans filming Squeak, Squeak is desperately searching for a heated warm bed both for herself and her teddy in the kitchen, with a nearby handbell so Squeak can summon the hoomans when she needs a food refill... 🥰
I'm wondering if the play wrestling is for fun and/or practice. Judging from the quills in the nose now and then, they must scuffle with each other on occasion. In any event we all enjoy watching Squeak tumble with her stuffed toys....dragging peanuts and everything along. Then, stopping for a snack.
Just when I think she couldn't get any cuter, she does this! I can envision her and Teddy taking a cozy comfy nap together in the corner. Yes, she LOVES her Teddy!
So I did see where Teddy was originally for Chonkers (correct me if I'm wrong!) and he wasn't super enthused with it. Now I know his plan was to save it for his kid ❤
There is much more to porcupines than one would think. Sqeak likes her toy! I enjoy the opportunity to watch how they interact with you.....never have been around a porcupine!! They have kind of a negative reputation!😊
I'm assuming they'll hate hate hate being outside in the cold and will want to be inside with the two of you? Speaking of weather, I saw online that 2025 is going to be the hottest year on record??? I hate extreme heat but I'll take it instead of the cold! I cannot handle the cold anymore!!!
@@joels7605 As much as I like the idea of a doggy door for the porcupines, I think the reality would be a chaotic mess. And you might suddenly have a free for all of many forest creatures wandering through your house. 😊
Squeak adores her toy and, as someone has rightly said, carries it about like a dog carrying something precious in its mouth - cats tend to chase things (many years ago I had one that chased a toy mouse till its tail and ears were all gone and it was just a grey shape). I really learn about porcupines, watching your videos: they have such different personalities, but they're all fascinating.
The white hairs on her back above her tail and around the perimeter of her tail are the quills. In the winter they get a thick fur coat. That's mostly what you see on her front and back, because the fur grows longer than the quills in those places. Under all of her winter fur are zillions of tiny needle quills. The only place they don't have quills is on their legs and belly.
Aw, baby girl does love her emotional support Teddy. Does Squeak still follow her mom Spike around or is Squeak living independently now? (i.e. has she left home?)
I’m amazed at the personality of Squeak. I wonder what makes her tick. From what I have understood, most porkies are pretty mellow. Squeak is unusual and special in her personality. Maybe because she was born so small, she has SPS? (Small Porcupine Syndrome? Kinda like SMS, small man syndrome) Thanks for sharing your work with these amazing creatures.
I'm curious if we'd given toys to more of them when they were really young, if they would have played with them too. And whether them being food secure allows them the time for playing when normally they'd need to save that energy for foraging? Joel and I were surprised to see the orphaned porcupettes at Hope For Wildlife having similar wrestling matches with each other, even though in the wild, they theoretically shouldn't get that opportunity since they're supposed to be solitary and rarely have more than one baby at a time. But I'd also only put together the other night that Chonkers used to play with a glass bowl when we first met him. I don't think there'd been food in it for a while when he found it. Spike didn't so much play with things, as much as she likes exploring and touching new objects. She was the first one to try to figure out if she could operate the door herself (and also the first one who wanted to look in the toilet). She also seems to think every object in the house is about half an inch from where it ought to be.
I think badness makes her tick. But I hope she never grows out of it. She's so funny. I can't believe how different they all are. They're all individuals.
@@Forest_Friend We had an orphan porcupine (Pokey), and my late husband put a tree in our front room for him. There was a small bucket-like pail tied to a little rope that he would pull up(claw over claw) to get the treats inside. I thought that was smart of him! He only did it a few times, however.
I love Squeak 🩷, there I said it 😝 Normally, I would be wondering if this was teething, but since porcupettes (& rodents in general) are born with permanent teeth…onto a new theory 😅 Occam’s razor- Squeak just wants a buddy to play with! NA Porcupines are almost always born as singletons & they’re solitary animals, though they do occasionally congregate, as we have seen on this channel (especially in the cold), porcupettes usually play a bit with their mamas…but since Spike is convinced Squeak is the spawn of 😈, perhaps Squeak is missing a play mate! I bet Squeak wanted to play with you & Forest Friend but ah, the logistics is a bit tricky 🤭😂 Do you guys have access to the full Hazmat suits, so you can play with her?! 😂
Joel got me a puppet that I can use to play with Squeak fairly safely, but she can't run around with it as freely as with her Teddy and Quilly. Also, we noticed the orphaned porcupettes at Hope For Wildlife have wrestling matches too, and Pip used to try to wrestle Chonkers. Come to think of it, we first met Chonkers when he was playing with a bowl, kind of similar to what Squeak does.
Squeak just loves her teddy, I just think she is so adorable . She plays just like a domestic furbaby, but then again she is semi domesticated. 😊❤❤❤🐾🐾❤❤
We can learn so much from animals. Frankly we don't deserve them. All animals are capable of playtime. And it's a unique experience to watch it happen because only humans have that ability. I don't believe in a god per se. But you are doing "God's work". As an animal rehabber myself of opossums I really enjoy these videos. I've had one wild and 5 babies. It's been the best experience of my life. I would be in heaven with these wild porcupines. Good on you.
@joels7605 the only marsupial indigenous to our country. They can resist snake venom. Can sustain over 100 bites from a rattle snake. Are all but immune to rabies. As a marsupial they have a lower than average body temperature in which the disease can not sustain itself. They have no natural defensess. None. When they "play opossum" and look like they're dead? That's a natural cardiovascular response. They literally pass out. Their blood pressure drops so low they feint. They literally FEINT. From fear. And in that state it can last from moments to hours. You can pick them up. Carry them around. Please always be kind. They kill over 4 thousand (potentially) disease carrying ticks a year. When they open their mouths and drool? And growl? Yeah. It's all a bluff. They are capable of biting and trust me that bite could totally mess you up. But. They're teeth and bite force is rarely used on humans it's literally there to eat the bones they need for calcium. Without calcium they can literally become bone brittle. Like the elderly. Unlike other animals they can digest bone. So. If you have opossums in your vicinity. Give them your chicken bones. Please don't feed them cat food. They require high calcium protein diets. Cat food is ok on occasion. Please don't hurt wildlife. That's the bottom line. Be kind.
@joels7605 opossums when in captivity (it happens) they imprint on their caregiver. I've had 3 that were totally wild and we let them right out. Sometimes they imprint on us. It happens with beavers and the famous porcupine Teddy. If they imprint. They can't live in the wild. My last opossum imprinted and Blossom was the little critter love of my life. Sadly. Opossums only live 2 years on average. Essentially the same as a rat. In the wild it's often less because of predation and accidents. If you come across an opossum road kill. Please check for babies.
Squeak is so charismatic, such a star, such a darlin', and she loves her Teddy so very much. Is it because it has become a part of her; her smell; her mouth; even her fur? Or is it the family member she never had? Squeak always seemed so alienated from Spike, her Mother. But she and Teddy are together forever. Such is childhood love.
