Anyone else get excited by the start of these videos, then get depressed at the sight of the workshop - like we've all got one of those?
Ahhh! Ha! Ha! Yes, for the cost of all that stuff you could hire someone to re-do your kitchen entirely. However, it is a great video.
IKR!!!!!
Exactly. The very first Episode of Norm Abrams 'New Yankee Workshop' he promised to build some thing using only 'one hand tool'. What he meant was $100k of professional shop equipment, and only one hand tool.
Wow! Well said. I don't have the money to have all those things from this workshop.
This is a DIY for carpenters 😅
Wow. I’m surprised by the comments on this. I found this VERY helpful. It was straightforward and pretty simple. I’m not a master carpenter, I’d say I’m just a click above “beginner” and I followed along easy. I am currently building kitchen cabinets and decided to build in a trash drawer like this. I’ve been struggling with how to approach it but this has given me a good place to start. Thank you!
This is not DIY, this is professional 😩
Yep I wished I had all those cool tools.
I watched this video last night and wanted to comment then, but I was too tired. Came back to it today and watched it again. Very nice build. Making some new cabinets for a client who wants a pull out garbage. Very useful information here. Thanks for the upload.
Very cool, but DAAANG that was complicated and required a lot of equipment to pull off. I guess this should be titled "DIY - if you're a carpenter with a shop full of equipment"
mhans311 this _is_ a woodworking channel
I was just going to say I have no idea what is going on here lmao
He uses a lot of specialty equipment...but you really only need glue, a drill, and a table saw and you can do the same build.
@@RyanMonty not even actable saw, you can use a circular saw to do all of the cuts. Or even a jig saw if that's the only power tool you have. Or if you're really in a tight budget, with skills, you can do all of these cuts with a regular saw.
There are a lot of options IF you really want to build this.
I mean, these are like the basic woodworking power tools. A table saw is usually the first stationary tool people get, and you don't even need it for this. A circular saw (or a hand saw) will work just fine as long as you plan out your cuts
Brad thank you kindly for your feedback, I will listen to your advice & improve my editing. Uploading a longer one as we speak but will refine things in the future, cheers from Australia mate 👍
What a shop! Holy smokes! Do you realize what kind of a dream shop you have! Enjoy sir!!!
Wow. You’ve got the skill and know how in wood working. I’m impressed. Thanks for the video and informative tips.
Excellent video. I was looking different designs for a pull out bin. Our 6 month old Weimaraner has figured out how to open our free standing trash can to access all that it beholds, so I need another solution. Fortunately, I happen to have an extra set of 24" full extension drawer slides, along with enough scrap ply and maple so my only cost will be the two plastic bins.
BTW, I love the comment "Making sure to properly document the shavings coming off my hand plane". I can't seem to resist holding the shavings up to the light to make sure I can see through them. Again, great job.
You are fantastic and blessed with so many wonderful machines and devices!
I am a rookie to all of this DIY but I was lucky to find your channel now!! Good Work!!!
Brad, we'd love to see a similar video on a hidden slide-out cutting board cabinet. There really aren't any good ones on UA-cam. Love the channel!
Great modification, Brad! I'm going to do something similar when I build new cabinets for the house I just bought.
+Jayson Taylor Thanks, Jayson!
Wow honestly great work. Master craftsmanship.
"document the shavings coming off my hand plane" - haha! I love the tip about guiding the forstner bit. Can't tell you how many times I've needed to enlarge a hole with a forstner bit and struggle with that. A simple guide block never crossed my mind in that setting. Great video and super thorough!
+DN Handcrafted thanks! Always try to share those little tips I've picked up along the way.
Man this tutorial arrived 1 day too late. I literary just built one yesterday and it took me a loooooong time trying to figure out the measurements. You made it seem super easy!! Awesome video! Keep the videos coming!
+My Builds you probably learned more figuring it out yourself 😃
Nice video with a logical approach to putting it all together!
Thank you, George!
great addition dude! i did one recently for a kitchen build. These things are sweet!

Very nice! That is such a fantastic idea. Thanks for sharing this. 🙌
Wow. Lots of details! Very good how to video. Thanks.
Thank you!
Seems like this was made more complicated than necessary
Wow amazing video. Attention to detail is amazing!
So great! Nice ease of access!
Great job. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Even though I don't have the machine tools or wood to redo my cabinet this way i can appreciate the precision
I was looking for this sort of thing for a different project. I'm wanting to make a linen skip for our laundry. This should be ideal
Looking into some odd DIY videos and ran into this. It's good.
Omg! This is awesome! Totally beyond me and my hubby tho. We would be divorces over this project! Can you come over and do this for us?🤣
Holy shop! I thought I had a decent collection but this guy wins by far
OBSESSED!!! This is one of my favorite DIY videos of yours! 1:19
Awesome improvement Brad!
+JT Woodworks thanks, bro!
I just knew you were going to attach the door to the existing tray. Boy was I wrong! I now have a few more tools to add to my wishlist. Hubbs is in trouble 😜👍
This was excellent thank you so much. Wow. You made this look so easy and professional. I'm tempted to re-do my entire kitchen! (Maybe I should start with... a cabinet for the garage first though! lol)
+Jasper Martin hahaha, start small then go for it
glad i found this video, was going to do this in the next week to our cabinet to install a trash can in it vs. leaving out so the dogs can't get into it anymore. Bravo.
nice work. yup. if you have the right tools that you need to make it easier.
Top idea, well executed. I was thinking about how to address the unsightly bin issue in the kitchen. Thanks for the vid, it'll make my job easier... but not better. 😆
+Luke Johnson thanks, Luke. It's not a bad project at all.
Great video brother I appreciate you for sharing.
Well this was a pretty awesome video......I wanted to have the top mounted slides but if my exterior is thin I guess I'll have to go this route thanks :D
A+ Looks good! Researching for a corner cabinet trash receptacle if I can find can's that fit.
Good gosh what a shop!! Nice vid too!
awesome video Brad! even though I know why I don't recall you ever mentioning why you ripped the back panel of the drawer
Great job, looks great.
+Dan Prudlow thanks, Dan!
Awesome!!!! Measuring now to build mine!!
Sweet!
Nice. Guess if I had all of that equipment to work with (and a place to store it) I'd probably be able to make all the furniture for my house! hahahaha
you also need will and skill to built it ;) Tools dont build furniture, people do, using these tools...
I really enjoyed this work !
+BUK thanks!
Awesome job! Good work bud
Nice work!!
Thank you for this video. I wonder how difficult it would be to add a knee-press latch opening to it? In my last kitchen remodel, the cabinet store had one and I fell in love with not having to touch the drawer with dirty fingers to open it. Again, thank you for sharing your obvious expertise. Merry Christmas!
Great video man. Very cool.
+HereticJoe thanks , Joe!
Mr. IKEA making those drawers seems like a piece of cake for you! Great job!
nice build! we have a slide out trash can cabinet but rails are on the top. I like this much better!
+Zachare Holle Yeah, I'm glad I went with this version too.
WOW!!! This is amazing. I sooo, want to dare to do this, I just have never attempted to be a builder. :)
Great work bro
Most any ball bearing drawer slide manufacturer also makes a rear bracket which allows you to mount the front of the slide to the cabinet face frame and the rear of the slide to the back of the cabinet, no shims needed along the sides. I measure the depth of the cabinet, subtract an inch and order that length slide with rear brackets. Then I cut a 2-3" wide strip of 1/2" plywood maybe a 1/16" wider than the width of the front face frame opening and mount the rear brackets flush with the ends of the plywood strip. The slides slide into the rear bracket, you attach the front to the face frame and push the plywood backer back to the back wall of the cabinet making sure it's square to the face frame and screw it to the back wall of the cabinet. Job done.
+Tracy Luegge yup, that would work too!
Nice improvement I have a few cabinets I need to do this to
Thanks, Mike! It's a quick and easy upgrade.
GREAT IDEA!!
My "honey do" list includes making a pull-out shelf for a cabinet to store liquor bottles. The design request includes "steps" on the shelf so the bottles in back are raised and visible. Many techniques in your video will be directly applicable. Thank you for sharing!
+Steve Karolek sounds like a fun project!
Absolutely Genius!
+Digital Swagg thanks!
This is a great idea! Cool video.
+Chris McDowell | CMR Woodworks thanks, Chris!
Wow this is great
+Robert R. Woolridge thanks!
This is awesome! But only for professional like you can do it this way!
great improvement!
+Making Stuff my wife thinks so and that's all that really matters 😃
Great "How to". Subscribed.
+Matt thanks for the sub!
This was great
Hi chris we just built a new house and we have a garbage can drawer that if your knee touchs the handle it opens love it.
Nice build and video. I'll be doing his soon
+Nate Adams Thanks, Nate!
Very nice. Now do one using tools that someone who is not a professional carpenter or handyman would have. Lol!
love all the Ridgid tools...
excellent!
Love it
Me encanta la idea .gracias
De nada, disfrutas (sorry if that doesn't make sense)
Dude, you're and amazing carpenter! Looks like at least 3 generation of hand me down knowledge. Now can you please simplify for us wannabe, with less quality tools lol
Wow, neat
Superb
I don't have a professional shop like you are showing.
Wow, just amazing,Brad. what material you used for this project.
I need this
Appreciate the help. Gave this a try, and it turned out ok, but not great. Unfortunately, the top of my cabinet door sticks out more than the bottom The bottom is solid against the face frame while the top has a good 3/8" gap to the face frame. Ideas? Shim the bottom of the tall anchor boards
Wondering what you used for the pullout slider. 100# weight or more?
Let me know if you can remember. Thanks for posting such an informative job.
Great video. Gonna save the hardware from the cabinets I'm getting rid of and make one of these instead of buying a new cabinet just for trash cans.
Nice
Cool addition, I was thinking about doing something similar.
thanks for sharing.
DesertBum AKA Chuck
+DesertBum WoodWork'n not sure who Chris is, but I'm Brad and thanks! 😃
Sorry, i was just watching another video and the name stuck in my head.
Thanks
Looks great. What is the size of your bins, please?
can you do a tour of your workshop with the tools and machines you have with their prices and links to where we can find em. also as usual great work. also build a bat cave
I really want a pull out trash can, however the cabinet i want to use is a 3 drawer cabinet instead of the large single door cabinet. I would need to get a new cabinet door somehow and they are the cheap laminate cabinets from Lowes so i'm not sure if i could build something to match.
Great video with great result, but this is more carpenter quality rather than DIY...
I remembered by engineering workshop class!
Nice!!
+Ronie Peterson - Street Photographer thanks!
fabulous
+aloosh alshammari thanks!
Nice 😃
Exelent
I need to remove an inner shelf on the back side of my cabinet to accommodate the pullout trash bins. Then I can do the rest of this project as shown. Just need to find out if the shelf is nailed into or glued onto the cabinet side walls.
Where did you get your table saw dust collection system from? You can see the cuts made from top and dust seems to be taken away quickly.
Dude just teach us how to convert a drawer by installing rails. This was like going back to school to long for me. Ima just buy 1/2 plywood and reinforce my cabinet then add the rails to the reinforced wood and do it that way it’s a lot more simpler. You had me depressed for a few
Minutes. Lol good luck
Really great re-do build, have to hide this video from the wife now ha ha, well done.
Barry (ENG)
+Barry Roberts Hahaha, just tell her it's in imperial units so it wouldn't work over the pond.
That wouldn't work as i use Imperial Units anyway ha ha
Barry.
You have really good idea. Right now I have 1 under the sink pull out trash can. I need another bin for the big milk carton, eggs carton, papers, etc. Are you using 8 gallon or 30 litre bins ?
I took the labels off them, so not sure exactly what they are. But from what I recall they were between 7 and 8 gallon cans.
You da man. Lol, great video
+Glen Turner thanks, Glen!
Great video! I'll prob be using it as a reference to build one myself.
One question though; are you worried about the trash cans becoming too heavy for the 1/4" plywood on the base of the drawer? I'm wondering if I should consider 1/2" with 2 trash cans.
+Joshua Glorioso I thought about it, but figured I could always beef it up later if needed. Though I put a fair amount of weight on it and it was fine.
a quarter inch bottom seems a bit filmsy. I use 3/4 bottom pocket screwed - it's on wheels so the weight is negligible - and the added momentum feels more substantial, smoother action.
