Matala sells different density filter material. I think they’re primarily used for filtering ponds but they’re rigid enough to provide a positive push fit option. Best of luck cooling your batt tray
I'd get a rubber battery strap with some hooks you can weld inside the battery box. and run a piece of flat stock across the front of the box to atleast keep stuff from sliding out in a hard braking situation, if something were to come loose in there.
Hi Taylor. I’m pretty much at the same stage of a CB450k build and have just built my battery box. I used sheet aluminium for lightness and brazed it together using a brazing rod and a blow torch as I have no welding gear. It worked really well. I made mine a lot smaller, I’m hoping not too small. I went for 60mm deep as the gravity8 batteries are just a little smaller. All I should need room for is the Pamco and starter solenoid. Keep up the good work. Cheers
Nice work on the triangles. I agree with the others who’ve said the reg/rec might live longer if it’s out in the air. You could mount it under the box, under the tank or anywhere else that gets a good air flow. I’d also have rear facing louvers under the box, which can be harvested from an old household floor register. You can probably find one for nearly free at a thrift store. Excellent work on your bike; I look forward to your vids.
At the front of the battery box. The mount could have had two pieces of metal that just slid over and under the frame at the front. That way it's just two bolts to undo to take the box out. A little rubber inner tube slid over would stop any rattling.
Hey Mate, great vid, Mr Cafe Racer Garage brought me here. Just thinking of your battery, I've got a lithium battery for my build as well.Just to save it from vibration, maybe sit it on a layer of soft rubber/high density foam.
If you hadnt told us we wouldnt have known about the continuity! The magic of video editing ;) As a matter of fact, it might be nice to see the final result first.
I have to agree with Jake, you will want to be sure that the Rec/Reg is getting good air flow and next to the battery may not be the best place. I do love the battery box however. Great job tig welding man that is not easy!
Damn I was born in Laredo and my birthday is 4/21 always wanted to go to Austin but everyone in my family lives in beeville, Freer, three Rivers, or Lewisville. Not close really. Have fun lol I'll be turning 35
I feel your pain with the background noise in our videos, If you decide to get an LED light for video don't do what I did and mount the camera to the same tripod as the light!! My entire Hump Build video this week was just recorded like this but I didn't realise that the LED lights put out a hum and the hum is that loud that i can't remove it in post :( All is good tho. Voice over will fix that. just thought Id let you know in case you get the LED Video Lights, I would defiantly come say hi if I was in Texas :)
Just a suggestion to make the mounting of that battery box easier, why not use the seat mount in rear by making the flange longer and line up the holes? Velcro works great for battery mount inside the box as well. Great vids.
No idea if this is a good idea or not, but to fix the open end why don't you use some fine expanded metal like you described with a scotch brite pad inside or some thin open cell foam. To increase air flowing through it while you drive you could make little scoops like on a car hood along the sides, except facing backwards? You might even add little pieces of the open cell foam to keep crap out. I've seen the little scoops for air flow on other electrical components in the home (I think it was a fume hood or exhaust fan) and the idea struck me for your bike. I'm rebuilding a 78 cb550 myself and soon may have a 750 too :) your videos have been incredibly helpful. Thanks for all the info you post! Very entertaining and educational.
When I bought my tuffside seat I actually mentioned your channel when they asked how I found them , awesome you get those grips ! Is it a good idea to put the rectifier inside the battery box ? Aren't you afraid for overheating ? Just a thought .. I like your video's very much , keep going like that ! I'm learning a lot of you
Perfect timing! This is exactly where I'm at on my build. Love your videos. Had a question. Kinda off topic. Changed out my levers and as a result lost my front brake light switch that was integrated into the old set. Just wondering if you have run into this and what your solution was? I've found some aftermarket switches but not sure exactly the best way to make them work
Taylor, nice of you to reciprocate with Cafe Racer Garage in Australia. He does have a great channel as well. Am looking forward to your tank dent removal video- are you doing it paintless dent removal style with glue pullers and poking from the inside or doing body filler and painting?
I'm going to try pushing from the inside. Luckily the larger of the two dents is directly over the hole for the petcock. I'm going to try to get something through there to help push it out from the inside.
I've got an old 1978 KZ400 I was wondering if you would be interested in picking up another project. I'm in the San Antonio area. I've had the engine rebuilt and the head seals replaced. I'm just tired of working on it and I don't have the craftman's ship to do it anymore.
Awesome channel Taylor! Just got a tip for you that I think will help you grow bigger which is upping your camera game. You don't need new gear (maybe some gadgets) just mainly how you man the cam. What I noticed is that the frame gets out of focus very often. Maybe try considering turning it to manual focus or just do a research and see what is the best way to solve this for your camera model. Another thing is the movements especially for close ups the cam needs to be moved slowly and steadly and give the shot time to focus and be clear for the viewers. Lastly, the lightings. I know you only shoot in day light and the lighting is very good and if you add a source of lighting on top of that it'll change the game. Maybe a simple ring light or something or just research and see what people are doing! Again, I'm just telling you stuff I've noticed and think will help you. I'm not an expert but I'll encourage you to spend some time doing research on the video department. Keep it up !
Dude, awesome work and bin following you video's for a long time now. Question, Whats the plan with the airpods? Hope there is stil space for them between the carbs and the new battery box!! Greetz from Holland!!!
So I’ve been trying to find a reference in some of your videos in regards to the skinny little batteries you are using... what could you tell me about them? Are separate electronics needed to run them?
Love your videos, man! I will say, I personally would love to see more footage of exactly how you are fabricating everything. Also, do you use Audacity, or another program, to remove background noise?
I will try to incorporate more of that. I have been trying to keep the videos in the 10-15 minute range so some things get cut. I just use the audio settings in Adobe Premiere
Classic Octane And that can be really hard to do, I understand totally. I just know that I love learning by watching, and you do some great work that people can really learn from. And, I don't have experience with that program yet, but I'm sure it has a good audio editing tool. Keep up the great work, man!
Hey Taylor! Man if you need encouragement please just PM me! i'm an avid viewer on your videos... Rebuilding my CB500 from scratch (engine opened) and man.... You are my inspiration! We've already switched some PM's on Instagram... Keep doing an awesome work!

My first conmment was before I got to the end of your video and saw the shout out, Thank you so much brother, :)

Good vid. Love the welds; very clean/uniform. This bike has been fun to follow
This is one of the next projects for my CX500 build. Can't wait!
Great work as usual. My Vespas had Velcro holding the batteries in their boxes. Worked just fine... I'm headed to Cafe Racer Garage today...
Love your videos, thanks for taking time to make them and explain some things to help others! Keep up the quality content!

Old school screen wire, and paint it black, it's metal so will hold its shape and paint
bike is looking great. keep up the good work.
Great work madman. Looks good. nice work!
That battery box looks pretty damn neat! Awesome job man!
Love that tank! the bike is looking awesome.
great looking piece
If you hadnt told us we wouldnt have known about the continuity! The magic of video editing ;)
As a matter of fact, it might be nice to see the final result first.
Awesome build bro! See you on saturday at the handbuilt!
Could you get some perforated metal sheet to weld in on the front side of the box to allow air flow?
I have to agree with Jake, you will want to be sure that the Rec/Reg is getting good air flow and next to the battery may not be the best place. I do love the battery box however. Great job tig welding man that is not easy!
much better !! good work

I didn't want to battery box becoming loose every time I removed the seat.

stamped steel sheet for air flow to the frontside of the box.
For the front of the box, maybe close it off then drill some 1/2 inch holes in it for air

I'm biased because of my comment on the last video but oh yeah, that battery box looks that much more sleek now. :)
could use a wire mesh panel on the back of the battery box.
Perfect timing! This is exactly where I'm at on my build. Love your videos. Had a question. Kinda off topic. Classic Octane sounds good 👌
Make a piece of metal with some like hotrod louvers on it for the front.

Maybe you want to put the rectifier elsewhere with lots of airflow fo prrvent it from getting too hot and frying it :)
Awesome channel Taylor!

Totally agree. Thanks for the suggestions.
Do you have any videos on bike tire replacing? If not, have any tips? What tools do you recommend? Thanks.
Dude, awesome work and bin following you video's for a long time now. Question, Whats the plan with the airpods? Hope there is stil space for them between the carbs and the new battery box!! Greetz from Holland!!!
Yes, there is still room. Should have 1/2' to 1" clearance.
So I’ve been trying to find a reference in some of your videos in regards to the skinny little batteries you are using... what could you tell me about them? Are separate electronics needed to run them?
metal mesh for the filter

How bout a louvered piece for the front of the tray
Isnt it kind of risky to put the rectifier/regulator so close to the battery? isnt the rec/reg suppose to be in a cool place?
What gauge sheet metal did you use?
16 gauge
electrical is the worst part of these builds. I would love to see you do a more in depth video on that. even if its just the box portion.
I covered the full wiring of my Triumph. I will make sure to include what steps I take in this build.
Why no M-unit?
Trying to keep this one on a strict $2,500 budget. I may end up keeping this one and if I do I will probably build a "version 2" with an m-unit blue.
Hey Taylor!
