So glad a professional has finally explained the 10 degrees temperature and the feeding. And the covering of course. Thanks Tim!

100% agree with Yanbbrox, Insulation makes all the difference. 👍
I have 50mm celotex allround the inside of my 2500 gallon pond, with 35mm polycarb covers,
It has been running at 20C for all of November to treat for gill flukes, with just a 1 kw electro heater. and cost just £50 for the month.
I'm now slowly dropping down to 10C for winter, and estimate it will only cost about £30 a month.
Thats cheaper than the £2000 plus outlay for a heat pump and electric over 5 years....at my current prices.
That may well change next year though... when I come out of my deal 13p/kWh day rate and 7p/kWh night rate😂

I 100% agree with stability, but I put more on insulation. I have a small grow-on pond that is heated with no more than a 300w aquarium heater, the base is insulated the sides are insulated and not with sheet insulation, proper thick roofing insulation, and covered with polycarb. It keeps it toasty, 2 days ago they stopped feeding, yesterday I checked the pond temp as it's never dropped below 15 degrees in 3 years and it had dropped to 5 degrees, I noticed the heater had broken, even with a new heater and the temps back up to normal the fish are still not happy. A total system shock for them, they have never seen low temps, they will be fine just need time to adjust. My main point is this little heater kicks in about as much as the ones in my aquariums indoor as the pond is so well insulated, if I ever get to upgrade the main pond to my dream pond it will be wrapped up like an old immersion heater and then insulated some more, keep the heat in and the costs are low

    Nicely said mate 👍
I have an unground oval shape and it’s a mission to cover it lol 😂
    holding 17c
Are there any advantages if we wanted to give our own ponds a heat ramp??
    Could you explain that
    Cheers

Top video Tim. Informative as always. I’m guessing not, but does the polycarbonate cover not hamper the colours of the koi given that the natural daylight might be restricted (to an extent)? Cheers 👍🏼

Where to start from is having it under cover like yours, with all the machinery running that alone should generate heat

Hi Tim really interesting video 👍👍 quick question if you heat your pond and cover it do you not worry about the condensation effecting the water quality wouldn't it be stale water dropping back into the pond ?? I am heating my po d but haven't got it covered for that reason but I'm not sure if I'm worrying about nothing 🤔🤔🤔 any advice would be much appreciated.. thanks and stay safe

There is always gaps on a pond. As I showed on the video there are gaps between the covers. I’ll do a follow up video next week

I see the videos of the Japanese dealers- they have heaters that look like our 'pool heaters'. Do you know if they use just the normal heat exchanges (cupra-nickel) or do they use a special heat exchanges with their heaters?

    • @TimWaddington
      @TimWaddington  2 роки тому

They use stainless steel heat exchangers I believe.

    Hi Tim great advice
I use solar weave sheeting to cover
I have used in line heaters with Titanium elements and it was expensive.
I was always told as a fancy goldfish keeper small time breeder to stay away from 10 degrees so I heated to 12 c
I was told the goldfish immune system was kind of in limbo at that temperature.
Obviously you know Koi more than most and 10 degrees obviously works and I have found since keeping Japanese Koi they are hardier than fancies even the single tail UK pond type fancies Bristols and London’s and Japanese Wakin . Koi are tougher than I imagined.
I think I will one day get an air source heat pump can I ask are they a lot more efficient than the 1 and 2 kw in line ones ?
    Great information again.

Great video . I`m tempted to get an ASHP . From what I`ve seen on other channels it can be done for under £1 per day , as long as you don`t go mad with it - so not too bad !
