  • hi friends! this week's vlog became very long so I decided to split this week up, part II coming soon! In the meantime it's been so nice reading Rilke alongside Lucy, watching the rest of the leaves fall to the ground only to be covered in snow (which I'm still wishing would make a soft return) - what are you all reading? xx

I think what you say about loosing yourself in motherhood is very insightful. My situation is quite unique as both my children are autistic and are very dependent on me. I have to devote the majority of my time to meeting their sensory, emotional and physical needs- it can be all consuming and exhausting. It is also why reading is so important to me- that’s the thing of the me before motherhood that I cling to- it’s a vital part of maintaining who I am, apart from just a mother (which I love being btw, exhausting as it is) xx

I love your posts Emma. I have not read Rilke yet, I keep feeling a little daunted, but maybe I will try ' Letters to a young poet' as a first read.
I wondered if you know of any UA-cam videos or book explaining Emily Dickinson's poems please? I am older , I was a paediatric nurse in a previous life, but never an academic. I am in the UK.
I started to read ' Collective poems of Emily Dickinson ' recently and whilst some I understand, there are some that I really don't.
Thanks again, your posts are calming, cosy and very educational.

Yeah, I read Turn of the Screw last month. My pithy line about it is I’d probably prefer writing an essay on it than reading it. The ‘is she mad or are there ghosts’ angle is great, but I honestly didn’t find the writing particularly tense, scary or engaging. I only finished it because it was short and a classic.

I’m interested to hear what you think of Bluets! I read it recently and honestly I didn’t like it too much. I thought it was a little self-conscious, as if Maggie Nelson were ‘showing’ rather than ‘sharing’ her experiences.

I'm hoping to join you and the other DAs for the live show. I finished it the other day, and now I'm re-reading parts of it. The narrator feels unreliable tho it's not clear. I've got it on e-book. It's together with three other stories, at least one of which also is about a person who sees ghosts. It seems likely James was more interested in the topic than he was in confusing the reader. I agree that his prose demands concentration on the reader's part. Thx - enjoyed.

Dear Emma, just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy your content. I just finished Dorian Gray, currently reading and loving "Woman in White" and "Broken Wings" is in the mail. You've inspired me to read far beyond what I had before and it has enriched my life in so many ways! If I may, I'd like to recommend a book for you :) It's called "When Marney was There". Maybe you've already read it? If not, it is both a movie and a book, and both are wonderful. It is a children's book, so I don't know if there is an audiobook version, but should be an easy read. It is one of the most hearwarming stories that I've ever read so I think you will enjoy it as well (although you may cry... I certainly did). Okay, that's all from me for now!
