The development history of Super Mario RPG is comprised of a scattered collection of facts and interviews that have made their way to the internet over the years. In this video, I attempt to highlight and detail some of the information I've learned on the heel of the release of the game's remake for the Nintendo Switch. Find out how the game came into production, see early ideas and artwork for the concept, and how it became the game we know today.

I knew that the reason why Mario never used a sword or any medieval weapons because it doesn't fit with the Mushroom Kingdom, hence said weapons that Mario supposed to use become the Smithy Gang, but I never knew that SMRPG was originally inspired from The Three Musketeers. Imagine a Nintendo game that focused on the swashbuckling action.
Plus, the connection with Paper Mario being the sequel to SMRPG makes sense since both games ended with the parade.

I'm glad I found people who appreciate this game as much as I do. I didn't even realize how much I loved this game until I went through the remake of which I'm going through a second time. Sadly my snes cart was lost long ago.

Great video! Aspects of Geno's design always reminded me of the antagonist in an old anime (Unico in the Island of Magic) and seeing the concept sketches at 7:11, one of them *really* looks like the protagonist from the same movie. I now feel pretty validated in my hunch that some design inspiration came from there.

Dude! Just looked up Unico, and I see what you mean! That hair really gives off the same energy. I wouldn't be surprised if it was an influence!

    Great and informative video, thanks!
Seeing Link and Samus in RPG 2 concept art makes me wish there could be the possibility of a Nintendo RPG mashup where some evil is taking over various Nintendo worlds and Mario needs to team up with Link, Samus, Kirby, Fox, and various other Nintendo characters from all the franchises, and travel to their respective worlds to save them and ultimately the entire Nintendo-verse.

I'm finally getting around to this myself and having a great time!
Being born in '91, definitely feel it was one of the first RPGs I played, without really knowing what an RPG was at the time. Don't think I even made it past the sewers back then, tbh. But by now I've seen so many playthroughs and speedruns and such, it's easy to appreciate how much work was put into all aspects of this without them going overboard. Kinda wish we got to see what the more regal, high fantasy style might have turned out; just seeing Mario in armor or fancy clothing really reminds of Deltarune or even Ichiban in similar outfits in the Like A Dragon games. but ultimately I think what we did get is for the best.
A sequel could be great, but I'm really left to wonder just what Nintendo is thinking at this point. They claim to have changed course for Paper Mario, citing the fact that with Mario & Luigi, having two RPGs was redundant...only for AlphaDream to shut down. Now they've remade this and are going to rerelease Paper Mario 2. Are they gauging reception for both? Are they only going to focus on one or the other? Or are these just to cash in before their next console? Who can say. I'm hopeful but cautious.
Anyway, great video! Was not expecting something like this.

I should add, I had no idea about the connection to Moon, or even him having designed some newer Pokemon, but it totally makes sense. All great and charming stuff.

Never knew that SMRPG led to the development of Paper Mario. Cool factoid there.

A sequel seems like a no brainer, they have the skeleton now, a new fanbase, and Paper Mario is its own thing now.

Definitely agree! Hopefully they can pull it together for a sequel, with these OGs involved even.

Thanks for making this video! Lots of cool info. I kind of wonder if the paper aesthetic of Paper Mario is a subversion of the pre-rendered 3d look of SNES mario rpg, like a way of further distancing the game from the Square Soft developed one.
I wish there was more info on how the 3d models were rendered and they were cleaned up for the game. If you look at most of the actor sprites, you can tell some skilled pixel artist fixed up a lot of stuff by hand.
Like the era of games that used pre-rendered graphics for character sprites is so fascinating to me and there's so little information on the process they went about doing it back then.

I laughed at the notion of a remake all the way up to the reveal, even up to the flash to the new graphics at which point my laughing transitioned straight into a scream of disbelief and excitement.

Great Summary. Great Video. I like how you framed it as "The developement history - (as it is known)" XD Great stuff 12/10! if you have any more of these planned, please do em' this is really good. I loved mario rpg growing up, I always thought the dev team was just square as whole making a jrpg for nintendo, i had no idea it was a completely separate team and that team, went onto to make entirely different games. Great great stuff.
