I'm a big fan of isaac's pixel art style. Mostly because it doesn't try to go "so retro" feeling. It does it's own thing, using pixel art style as an actual art style rather than a nostalgia bait. Also i love how some of repentance sprites don't feel like a pixel art, but as anctual piece of artwork if that makes any sense (you can see it on Vs screen portraits for characters and bosses).
It's also worth talking about how the original flash issac had such a strong art direction, especially for a game that was entirely free. I like pixel art, don't get me wrong, but it was definitely a disappointment seeing the child-like drawing visuals go, even if it massively improved the game's performance. Though to be fair, the pixel art definitely tries to emulate that more unique artstyle, (and that attempted emulation of a child's drawing definitely makes the pixel art in issac much more unique) and pixel art ironically allows far more detail in sprites.
@@horatio2560 I understand that, but Sans is a word that means 'without' Sans the charecter has his roots in this - Comic sans is a font that is sans serif (without the extra bits i.e. serifs at the extremities of the letters, unlike a serif font, say times new roman) so is without serif.
One thing i will mention is that i love how all of the sudden they resprited so much stuff for Repentance, i would've never found the old sprites to be ugly, but comparing them with the Repentance sprites, they're just like ew ew yucky
I really like how you really highlight how much the sprites differenciate depending on the theme, something i never truly appreciated enough from the game. The video overall is pretty good!
This might be a bit of a hot take, but as amazing as rebirth's style is I honestly prefer flash's style. It feels more personalised and is clearly Edmund's style.
I think that two more absolutely crazy examples of masterful pixel art are Stardew valley, and ESPECIALLY Rain world. The amount of detail that goes into the background (and foreground in Rain World) is absolutely stunning, and must've taken VERY long to create and perfect. Anyways, obsessed rant over. Good video btw!!!
even after hundreds of hours playing the game, I failed to properly appreciate how much the art works in making this game enjoyable, thanks a lot for bringing attention to it ! :D your vid's also just really good execution wise gotta say, the editing was effective and purposeful (I love the different bgs), the script was what it needed to be and hell you clearly put effort into the voice work too. My criticisms would be that : I sometimes had trouble understanding what you said, not an accent or a mic issue, but I'd have liked more clear enunciation at parts and while the jokes were really funny and the pacing was really neat but it kinda felt like it slowed down to a more pedagogical pace later on. (it's subjective and maybe nitpicky but such a good first video deserves feedback I feel)
Really well made video, solid editing btw! If you decide to expand more into it, i wish it would be about the style the Binding of Isaac has and how its applied to bosses, enemies, items, trinkets and so on. You know, like how its all supposed to be all created by a child and thats what makes most enemies have round big eyes and heads, but at the same time this style allows for its monsters to get very gruesome
Honestly, when I first saw this video I thought "Wow, what a great video! Surely this guy has been doing this UA-cam thing for quite a while, right?" Yeah, my brain might have been wrong. But the sheer quality of this video has gained you a brand new sub! I hope you will continue to make a great content. And I can't wait to see what you make next!! Until then, goodbye for now. ^^
Hey this is really good! It was really nice to have you explain these art concepts in pixel art using something probably know way too much about (TBOI). Looking forward to future content!
Thank you for making this :3 I'm making an Isaac-inspired roguelike of my own and didn't really realize how simple the game's art style is, so this guide is actually perfect for helping me "direct" the game's art style a bit better while still making it visually different.
the little flag sprites are awesome btw!! subbed (: Edit: also this video was super interesting!! Made me think a lot about how much information you can glean about something just by looking at it
Great analysis of the spritework! It made me realize how much thought was put into every detail. I think some other games that have some really neat and detailed spritework are the Risk of Rain games, specifically the recent Risk of Rain Returns. I think that it’s worth looking into. Great video regardless.
Really informative video! I wish my first video was this well put together. I’d put something to look at certain points where the screen isn’t too busy, just a tip there. But other than that you did a great job here, super informative from a point of view I wasn’t expecting. Can’t wait for more!
came here to just see a simple video, didn't expect actual good explanations 😂 as a fellow pixel art enjoyer i've started noticing the small details in a lot of games, glad to see other ppl do that as well, good video 👍
For those unaware: since this is a game Edmund has worked on with Nicalis and Antibirth mod team (along with community) then it would be obvious for him to make references to other games (Time Fcuk, Super Meat Boy, Gish and so on... )
Im edging to this(i actually don't, the vid is amazing the mic quality is ok but it's not noticable if you're deep into the video and just get intrigued by it, which is unavoidable.)
Honestly, I know you may not do it, but, if you have the time, and the game, analyze Cookie Clicker sprites/pixel art, (not sure if there's much there, but there may be).
Okay honestly, the video didn’t catch my attention at all at first. I think that’s your mic quality to blame more than anything, because after sticking around anyways, I became very intrigued with what you were talking about. I’d recommend getting a better mic when you can
@@sparkyspritesstuff man I’ve watched your new video about swords as well. I really like the way you dive into art. It’s so clear to see you have a passion for it! And Like you’re not just saying “red because anger and blood etc”, but truly finding symbolism in why the art is made as it is. For example in this video, I was soo intrigued with the idea of the red colors of monsters changing depending on how deep down the floors you are, with saturation etc. I’ve never thought of that before, and it’s super cool. I also wanna highlight how awesome it is that you (so far) have talked about games that I personally enjoy. I know that’s different from person to person, since we all like different things, but man! I’d LOVE to watch like a 2 hour long video where you dive into the art of EVERY item in the binding of Isaac, portrayed and analyzed like in this video! Also, here’s some other games I’d love for you to cover: Undertale Inscryption Everhood Maybe even the fnaf series and it’s 8-bit mini games. That feeling pixel artists know
(Enjoying yer mod btw)
'pixel art as an art style' .,,,,,,,,
The sprites even squash and stretch like the flash sprites did
also Isaac:
*R e t r o V i s i o n*
I’m pretty sure making sprites for Isaac has permanently affected my pixel art style for the better
Squash and stretch goes a long way in this game!
i also love the thick outlines the characters have, it's an awesome art style!

Only the demo (which allowed you to play one basement and one caves floor sans WotL) was free, the full game cost money.

OH MY GOD I’m upset
Also thanks for watching! 🎉
