One of my characters constantly annoys the DM because I cast Mind Sliver on everything It's a cantrip, meaning no spell slot cost. It does psychic damage, meaning it cannot hurt objects. And its a saving throw, meaning the DM has to roll if the object is susceptible to it. Therefore: Perfect mimic detector
@@strawberrymilk5009 the dm can also eule that it's ok to let you have a mimic detection cantrip. If it was me i would allow a custom spell of at least lvl1 (some allow detect good&evil or detect magic) so that you have to sacrifice some ressources and can't use it all the time. In the end it really comes down to the style of DMing you want to have. If you want it laid back, you won't use mimics ir make them easily detectable so players won't need to poke every objects, magically or otherwise. If you want it paranoid, there won't be any loopholes and they have to take risks. Either way it's never a DM vs players things, framing it that way is never a good idea. It's always the DM adjusting both rules and rulings to create the mood/themes that he wants and hopefully the players being on board with the experience.
@TomFromMars true This DM's also the guy to disintegrate my character instantly with a 70+ dmg disintegration ray, then give them character development as they're mysteriously resurrected in the next hour Peculiar game, but definitely a fun one

There is so many ways i could mess with that strategy as a DM. Most simple one would be to not bother rolling the dice at all.
@TomFromMars fair
This is the dude's first time officially DMing. He's just doing a pretty decent job

Visions of an ant boy's legs hanging out the mouth of a 'chest'
My ADHD brain was too impatient, and it read the text as "POV: ADHD Player is about open a chest in a dungeon without first checking it."
