When a Patronus Goes BAD (The Story of Raczidian) - Harry Potter Explained

- Hey guys,
Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In one of my last videos I discussed the origins of dementors, and the story of a dark and evil wizard named Ekrizdis. But in that same video, I also scratched the surface of another story- the story of an evil wizard known as Raczdian. Raczidian was a dark wizard who is said to have existed during an unknown period in time- it’s only referred to as ancient. There is a case for the argument that Raczidian is the father of dementors, as he may have existed BEFORE Ekrizidis, and in the ancient tales that speak of him dementors are mentioned. He was a very talented dark wizard who was fully immersed in the dark arts- able to produce all sorts of evil concoctions and cast all sorts of sinister spells. But one thing that he always had trouble with was what we now know to be the Patronus charm.
A Patronus charm is produced when a witch or wizard casts the spell Expecto Patronum. There are two types of patronus charms, corporeal and incorporeal, and the type that the witch or wizard casts will depend on their experience / preference. The more basic form of the spell is the incorporeal patronus, which assumes no animal form and simply resembles a burst of white vapour or smoke, and the more advanced form of the spell is the conjuring of a corporeal patronus.
The ability to successfully cast a corporeal patronus is considered a very impressive feat in the wizarding community. The corporeal patronus assumes the form of the witch or wizards ‘spirit animal’, and varies extensively from witch to witch or wizard to wizard. Harry’s is a stag, Hermione’s is an otter, etc. It’s also worth mentioning that there’s no way to know what your Patronus is until you cast it. Professor Catullus Spangle explains this:
"No reliable system for predicting the form of an individual's Patronus has ever been found, “
However it’s also been expressed that a Patronus can change:
“The form of a Patronus may change during the course of a witch or wizard’s life. Instances have been known of the form of the Patronus transforming due to bereavement, falling in love or profound shifts in a person’s character”
While casting spells that create your very own spirit animal is impressive, there is a purpose, and that purpose is to ward off dementors or lethifolds- dark creatures that feed on human happiness and incite a feeling of despair in anyone that gets close to them. They are among the foulest creatures around, and represent nothing but darkness, depression and decay. They are also notably difficult to get rid of, and the only known way that it can be done is with a Patronus. This is because the patronus represents everything that a Dementor doesn’t: hope, happiness, survival and purity. As the patronus itself does not feel despair or hopelessness, as a human might, the dementors can’t hurt it and are repelled by its presence.
But, you might now be asking, if Raczidian commanded Dementors, then why would he need to cast a Patronus charm? To dig in to this further, we need to look at the story of Illyius- a young orphan wizard who saved his village from the dark wizard Raczidian. Illyus came from a small wizarding village in the mountains, and Raczidian lived in a black castle in a nearby forest- guarded entirely by Dementors.

Yeah, to cast a patronus you have to be pure of heart, like Delores Umbridge.
Yeah umbridge was evil
Yes. this story sounds like a fanfiction by someone who has never read the books. Cursed Child was like that too.
Me: *Doubt X*
Gorge States yes but pure evil.
She was a heartless b**** but she still didn't quite make "Evil". By D&D standards she would have been Lawful Good in Order of The Pheonix because she was obeying and upholding the law as it was written and was completely devoted to seeing it upheld. Never mind the fact that Fudge was Chaotic Stupid and was making unjust laws that deserved to be opposed.
So how did Umbridge not summon maggots instead of a patronus?
Even maggots wouldn't touch her
@@honeydroptheunicorn6557 😂😂😂
Because while she was mean she didn't kill anyone and wasn't dark. She was very strict and loyal to the ministry to fault and believed that she was doing right.
m l i mean, she tortured students, that‘s pretty dark to me
@@ml-ws4ok she sent dementors after harry, uncaring of he died, was willing to torture Harry out of excitement, and tried innocent people to prison.
Dumbledore said there are fates worse than death. Just because she didn't kill anyone doesn't make her as worse
I'm wondering how true the tale is. Remember, history is written by the victors.
Also, as I understand it, you can take an existing spell, and modify it to do the exact opposite. This can be to do the opposite affect, or it can be to counter the original spell. In this story it talks about Raczidian trying to cast a patronus to counter a patronus. Raczidian was an experienced wizard, so logically he would try to reverse the spell for it to act as a counter curse.
Back to the tale, It may be that they didn't realize that Raczidian tried modifying the spell, or they might have purposely put into the tale about having to be pure of heart to dissuade evil wizards from trying it.
Lupin talks about needing a very strong happy memory. A dark wizard's happy memory might be much different from what we would fathom.
This is a very thought-provoking argument
Also even if they needed a pure happy memory. Evil wizards were children and most likely innocent etc. too. People aren't born evil. They might have a few happy childhood memories.
Chiara yeah but on the other hand their very happy memory might come in the form of muggle slaughter or something like that too lol
Reminds me of the "blowfly girl" story. Maybe he has a thing for maggots.
The only spell that can counter effectively a Patronus is of course a Matronus and it always turns out to be right and beat the Patronus
I don't think you have to be pure of heart, I think you need simply to be able to summon a fond memory that reflects the joy you hold in your heart. Umbridge and Snape, while not purely good, still held residual memories of happiness and love to be able to summon their patronus. Those who can't, have allowed their memories to decay, their childhood innocence to fade, and their souls to become *wholly* corrupted. I firmly believe Umbridge maintained her childhood innocence via all the cat figurines and frilly pinks in her decor & attire. Snape maintained his childhood innocence in the memory he maintained of the love of his life, Lily.
Umbiges mind was very twisted thou. She honestly thought that her actions were just and fair. Giving her the ability to cast a patronus. Now snapes deal is a little bit more complicated. A potronus is the purest of magic and can't be used for bad things...now Alot of people believe snape was "obsessed" with lily from the moment he met her. And if that was true then snape wouldnt be able to cast a potronus if he was thinking of her. Obsession is a tainted dark love that isn't pure so one couldn't use it for a potronus. So therefor snapes love might have been more of a genuine love rather then a infatuation. And umbrige is just insane lol...sry for spelling errors
Your explanation kinda makes more sense than the original one😬🤣
@@aprilskye7338 i don't think just thinking that you're doing right is enough to cast a patronus.
Coz if it were the case, voldemort would be able to do it as well, there wasn't a bit of remorse for his actions even to the point he died, so he must've thought that it was only fair to rid wizarding world of muggle borns.
I agree to the original comment, voldemort and Bellatrix and other dark wizards let their childhood innocence and warm memories die and started taking pleasure in torturing and killing people, tainting their memory.
While Snape could do it coz he always relished the childhood time he spent with Lily and Umbridge was still kinda childish, with that all pink dress and dozens of cat portraits, so she surely kept some good childhood memories to be able to produce a patronus.
@@aprilskye7338 - You're talking in circles. You're implying that twisted people are incapable of "feeling" happy when there's evidence in the real world that this IS possible. Umbridge gets joy from sick things, but she also clearly gets joy from cats and pink. This is not about whether someone is pure of heart, nor is it about thinking of justice. Neither of these 2 things conjure a patronus. Harry isn't thinking about justice and fairness when he summons his. In fact, in training Dumbledore's Army, Harry coaches them to think of a happy memory.

I agree and Voldemort worked with dementors so he could probably cast a patronus too.

I imagine Raczidian must of thought of such vile thoughts when casting the patronus spell that it caused a bad reaction. I think of Flitwick’s lesson 'Never forget Wizard Baruffio, who said 's' instead of 'f' and found himself on the floor with a buffalo on his chest. ' I’m sure that applies with intents as well. Like how Harry was unable to really hurt Bellatrix when he used Crucio on her.
yeah maybe joy from cruelly sadistic tortures & very evil dark magic leads the patronus to view them as the threat, or the caster having anything like a horcux
I use to think that in order to cast one you had to be pure of heart or something like this would happen. But then I learned that Delores Umbridge cast one and I started thinking a bit deeper.
I think you just need to
1. Have your soul whole (as in never directly killed someone)
2. Have the ability to love (Umbridge loved cats)
And 3. A memory that makes you genuinely happy.
(Also Umbridge was shielded and aided by the locket)
The reason Raczidian was casting it was to scare of another patronus. So let me put it this way, normally it’s cast to get rid of darkness (dementors) but he cast it to get rid of light (patronus) so the spell just had the opposite effect. Just a theory

so long story short a wizard more powerfull than voldemort died because he's too dumb to know what a patronous is.
Probably that myth has some truth.
However it's safe to say he tried some form of patronus and it backfired.
Insted of protecting it attacked him.
We don't know if it was truly maggots or something else since it could be changed as generations slowly alterded it.
Grindelwald: Am I a joke to you?? I made a blue fired giant demon!! That's better than Voldemort can do

@EVAN MUDD 2nd powerful dark magician according to HP movie related novels
Except he was weaker than Voldemort
What kind of souce is he quoting?
Also, a question: Why would people make fun of the kind of animal of a formed Patronus, when the sole ability to conjure a shaped one is already an incredible feat?
Because people are idiots, and wizards are seemingly no different. They fear what they don't understand and ridicule what they see as weak or pathetic, even though they should know better.
Like in the Harry-vs-Voldemort-duel where the only thing that came to Harry's mind was disarming the Dark Lord. He didn't know what good that might do him, and a lot of people, I imagine, would have berated him if this was a duelling class. "Why would you go for that, such a pathetic spell to use in this situation...Blablabla!"
And as Harry realized when Dumbledore opened the door to one of the Horcruxes with his own blood: Swinging wands and making a lot of smoke and light and noise is more often a sign of incompetence than skill. It's just difficult to understand that. One might say...it's wisdom ;-)

Ravenclaw. Patronus is a Dragon.
And for all the people saying that the story contradicts the books, that's probably because it's a myth, similar to the Tales of Beedle the Bard. Myths exaggerate certain things in order to emphasize scale and teach lessons (in the case of fables). Purity of heart is not a prerequisite of casting, it is comprehension of joy. Thus, I suspect that this is purely myth in Harry Potter Lore.

@@johndavis-si2oo Not likely, it was more likely he was just lustful for her. Here's some disturbing food for thought. Raczidian was supposedly a talented Dark Wizard. Personally, I imagine him to be old or at least late middle aged, however, Eliana was clearly a younger girl who was likely in her early 20s. I think Raczidian just wanted to take advantage of her while also keeping the rest of the villagers in line; so, he made the marriage proposition to kill two birds with one maggot.

Yeah I am also skeptical that "evil" people cant do it. I mean, evil people do not know or think they are evil do they? They all a=have had human pasts as well, with pain, joy, all of these human emotions. Usually they are products of circumstances very out of their control and become bad that way. Would Bellatrix have become who she was if not for her family? Absolutely not. Does that make her soul unpure? I honestly dont think so. "Evilness" is so subjective.
@@rosestokes7071 The only modern wizard who would definitely be unable to cast a Patronus is Voldemort, as he finds positive emotions like Love and Happiness to be weaknesses. Plus, he actively split his soul into Horcruxes, meaning he might not even _have_ a spirit animal anymore.

What other ways might it manifest, like how a proper Patronus manifests differently. It’s interesting how Umbridge was pretty evil but she could make a patronus.
I don't think she was _evil per se_ - her apparent evil was just a result of her arrogance and grandiose delusion.
Best comparison would be how in Warcraft Universe, only those with strength of true faith can use the Light - but there's this group of zealots called Scarlet Crusade, which to outsiders can only be described as evil, and they do partake in some rather evil deeds, but in their insanity and despair they truly believe they're just serving the greater good, thus Light still comes to their aid.
Very cool concept IMO. Still, to tie the above back to Harry Potter, I wonder if Grindelwald could summon a patronus? Interesting indeed!

I find it interesting that patronus represent animals while dementors represent humans.
Also, I think because of the nature of the spell is why it back fires on dark casters as the casters are the closest dark entity in the spell.
So it isn't that it has gone wrong but rather it works TOO WELL that it just targets the caster.
If that is the case, then we would find patronus to have its offensive use and not simply to just ward off dementors as we know that it can straight up destroy a dark wizard.

After watching this, I'm pondering to myself: What from would a "Patronus" take if its caster is pure of heart, but full of malice?
Has in Pure Evil... yes in this tail, it failed. But magic reflects its caster heart, so what would a Dark Patronus look like. If it worked?
I think the problem is less in being pure and more in what the spell does, it takes a memory (which by definition is imprecise and prone to change) and turns it into a guardian force that uses the joy of living as an offensive weapon. Because it's a memory that by definition you find pure and comforting, it defends you against things which try to dampen your spirit or feed off your joy.
If you are twisted enough to have memories that kindle these sort of feelings in you while being utterly abhorrent to everyone else then I guess you could summon a "dark" patronus, it would probably still do the same thing, but it might have a horrific appearance to everyone else.
What it sounds like in the story is that this guy tried to do exactly that, probably thinking that it would destroy the mouse, but he somehow didn't understand the steps to take and instead just tried to use a horrific memory which disturbed him instead, so it didn't defend him, it attacked him instead.
Thank you for another video.
Hello, thank you for explaining about the patronus toward dark wizards and witches! I really enjoyed it, for you question, i have a goshawk as a patronus in a slytherin house
Slytherin and I’m a dark wizard so but I do believe when I could it was some form of cat
I'm a Hufflepuff with a black mamba as a patronus. That has got to be the oddest pairing ever.
But its cool
Great Video, where do you learn these things?
Personally, I think that Death might be a good candidate, for the father of Dementors. They certainly give off a major Grim Reaper vibe.
It could be, that the despair of the ones that Ekrizdis was torturing, is what originally drew them to Azkaban.
So if you have to be pure of heart to produce a patronus, how is severus, dumbledore and many other non pure of heart wizards able to produce it.
Bad writing
How much of evil you think that Dumbledore is? + only pure heart isn't necessary.
Here's the thing, though, can you really say anyone is pure of heart? People aren't living saints, and everyone has their flaws, so I never really get it when fantasy uses the "pure of heart" idea for something special. I guess in this case you just have to be good enough, though there is the Umbridge exception. The pure of heart aspect is a theory for how it works in universe, and they don't completely understand how it or magic in general works. It's more being able to be happy enough. Anomalies are also a thing so maybe Umbridge is just an exception or an outlier for some reason they're aren't sure of. In the Harry Potter world there is a lot of "we have these ideas of how this works or these stories for how these were created, but we aren't sure", which makes it more realistic. We don't know how everything works scientifically after all. The world is filled with a lot of mysteries.
According to the Wikia, "the general belief held by the wizarding world that only those who are pure of heart are able to cast Patronuses; this, however, is untrue, as several characters with negative personality traits are able to cast a fully-fledged Patronus." Patronus are affected by happy memories like love and joy and this memories affect the form of a Patronus. Snape loves Lily and Dumbledore loves Hogwarts and its student. So in my opinion, the only people that can cast a patronus are those good and those in the grey zones (which means not good but not also bad exception to Umbridge. Because, there would always be exception to the rule.)
I’m in Ravenclaw and my Patrornus is a Lynx
You can produce a patronus if you THINK you are doing the right thing - Like Deloris Umbridge.
I've also noticed that it sometimes reflects what you think will make you happy. Snape thought only Lily could make him happy, and thus his patronus reflects that. When Harry cast his patronus, he thought his dad was going to be there, wanted him to be there and see him, and thus his patronus reflected this.
It is also the reason why so many who fall in love see their patronus changing into the person they have feelings about.
Also, some very powerful wizards & witches are able to cast a patronus of their choosing, which is the rarest you can get when casting a patronus. It is said that one should be wary of these people on the website. In my opinion, a patronus reflects either what makes an individual person happy or what they think will make them happy. Because not everybody is aware of what they think/what will make them happy and that it is very individualized, it makes it hard to decipher what your patronus will be. People who are able to cast a patronus of their choosing might just be able to shape their own happiness.
I also want to point out that sometimes when the patronus reflects what will make us happy, it is actually reflecting something the caster has not experienced yet but needs to in order to grow. Like a Thestral patronus could reflect how a person needs to come to terms with a death in order to be happy - or it might reflect the need to comprehend death on a deeper level. Maybe the caster hadn't ever lost someone to death before, and might feel on some level that they are missing something which the Thestral patronus would reflect. Just my opinion though, you don't have to agree with me.
I'm a proud Slytherin with a Greyhound as my Patronus.
Also just discovered this channel and I really like it so far.
I don't think it didn't work because he was evil. I think the backfires when you try using it with malice or evil intent. But there's a misconception here, to use the spell you don't have to be pure heart in general, only your intentions must be pure. which is why his spell backfired on him.
According to Pottermore:
Slytherin
Vinewood, Dragon Heartstring, 12½ inches
My patronus is a fire-dwelling salamander
I'm a Slytherin
Fir wood, 13 3/4 inches, phoenix feather
My patronus is a fox
The corporeal Patronus can also be used as a remote warning system. IIRC it was Kingsley Shacklebolt who warned the entire Weasely wedding gathering that the Ministry had fallen by using his Patronus.
I like the idea you put forward that the maggots were unique to Raczidian... its like the oppoisite side of what a patronus is, it was still a reprisentation of his peronality but because he tried to use a defensive spell as a weapon, the spell backfired and thus killed him, so in the case of Voldemort it could be a giant snake that he can not control and eats him or some other creature that could represent his perosnality.
I am a Gryffindoor with a stag patronus with black hair so am I just Harry Potter but a girl
Edit: I also have glasses and my wand is a yew wood with a Phoenix feather core
Woah cool!!
ok ok, so a lot of people have confusion about how umbridge was able to produce a patronus
-she didnt mean to cause any harm
-she actually meant good
-she isnt evil, shes just psychotic (doesnt know her actions are bad)
She’s unknowingly evil
I do wonder, if a Patronus is cast by channelling happiness, perhaps Raczidian wasn't actually attempting a Patronus? I mean think about it, there's a village down the road who constantly train in magic designed to thwart your guardians, and they are uncomfortable with the magic you practice. Raczidian definitely would have been researching ways to counter a Patronus. Perhaps his solution was to create an anti-Patronus. A spell that channelled all of your sadness, anger, envy, pain and even sadism? When concentrated, those are all highly destructive emotions. Perhaps that is what those maggots truly were, but Raczidian was unable to control such a highly volatile spell, especially since Patronus' appear to have some intelligence for the brief time they are cast. And being true to its nature, this anti-Patronus instantly betrayed and murdered its caster.
Delores Umbridge was not pure of heart but she was able to cast it. I think, what's required to cast a patronus is your most joyful memory. Every wizard and witch must have it, even the evil ones. Voldemort, Bellatrix, Dolohov, etc. have not been shown casting it in the series because there's not a need for them to do it.
I'm slytherin and my patronus is a fox
Romina 10 ayyyy Same
Gryffindor with a pigeon
Same but I’m in Gryffindor
I'm a Ravenclaw (wish for Hufflepuff), with a Manx Cat.
Im a gryffindor and I have a manx cat too :3

What’s wrong with Ravenclaw! I’m a Ravenclaw
Also if you live in the US, UK or Australia you can download the Wizarding world app to redo the sorting if you want to check again
@@pocketer_5257 There's nothing wrong with Ravenclaw, it makes since because I'm a writer and enjoy studding history. Hufflepuff just speaks to me more then Ravenclaw. And I have thought of deleting and redoing the account just to see if things have changed, because I am diffrent then when I first made the account...also if I get it again, I could learn to love being a Raven.
@@zoebrugg7594 Just find like 50 different house tests and try all of them. Then you can truly know lol
@@-Castiel- A little overkill, but I like your thinking!
I always imagined mine would be a lion, fox, fluffy dog, or a bird of sorts. But I've come to know myself more in the last few years, and I wouldn't be surprised if I would be faced with a ghostly version of myself from back when I felt more pure and alive. It would be a strange comfort, but saddening too.
Considering that, I would guess Voldemort's "patronus" would take the form of spiders, since they're natural enemies of the basilisk he once commanded
Lmao you dont need to be pure of heart to produce a patronus, you just need strong happy memories
Imagine finding out that your patronus is a dementor
Lmao
I wasnt expecto this
I feel like depending who tries it something different will kill them, but it’s something that ties into what they would have produced as a patronus, like imagine Voldemort tries it and he just gets devoured by a snake
My question is that why did not they just take harry Potter's memmory when no one was believing that Voldemort is back?
Anyone else curious with me?
lol same
Because they can be manipulated just as slughorn did to his
Because Cornelius Fudge was in heavy denial that Voldemort was back and had delusions that Dumbledore wanted his job as Minister of Magic so he had the magical government actively smear and discredit Harry. Even if Dumbledore were to try to show Fudge the Pensieve he'd probably still just accuse Dumbledore of trying to trick him
Memories can be altered or completely faked, and before anyone mentions Veritaserum, it can be beaten with Occlumency or having the antidote ready to go. That's why neither is used in court nowadays.
I am a hufflepuff, my patronus is dolphin and my wand is Black walnut wood with a dragon heartstring core, 12" and hard flexibility
I would imagine that maggots would be common for any truly dark wizard to produce when attempting to preform the patronas charm. Since their sole is truly rotten from their sprit animal being dead.
My sprit animal is a bobcat.
Anyone else bingeing these like crazy?😍
I can’t remember what my Patronus is exactly, but it’s a Terrier dog.
That's pretty specific
j Yeah, and Slytherclaw (Slytherin and Ravenclaw) is my Hybrid House.

I was so offended when you said they all laughed at him. Don’t underestimate a mouse! Thats how you get holes your walls, poop in your cupboards and bites takes out of all your food and you wont even notice till its toon late.

My patrounous according to literally every quiz I’ve taken is a Black Swan
And for the people mentioning that Umbridge shouldn’t have been able to summon one how it is presented to us as readers and viewers is that to summon a patronus you only have to have a truly fond memory and understand joy
the charm mutating was likely less due to raczidian being 'dark' and more that his intent, being so far from what the spell was intended for, mutated it in a destructive fashion. we already know that intent and emotion play a role in magic, not just for the patronus charm but the killing curse and crucio as well. the commonly used english translation for the patronum in 'expecto patronum' is guardian. a guardian defends from harm, while raczidian intended to cause harm. The spell was created specifically to ward off despair and suffering, while raczidian tried to use it to induce such. forcing the charm to activate in wildly innappropriate conditions caused it to warp in a malicious fashion.
Thanks for sharing this to Potter heads like me!!!
Your such a potter head, you need to get clean man
My Hogwarts house is Hufflepuff and my patronus is a Wildcat.
