- As the Nerd prepares to review Battletoads for the NES, he finds himself joined by the "guitar guy" who's been living behind his couch, and who helps to show him why it's impossible to complete the game with two players. This is Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 55.
Battletoads is one of the gems that Konami put out on the NES. Konami witnessed the success of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and created a franchise to mirror. The Battletoads franchise also sported action figures and an animated series, which never lived up to the hype of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The NES game debuted in 1991 and its' notoriety stemmed from it's obvious similarity to the Teenage Mutant Nina Turtles and its' incredibly difficult gameplay. The game is also playable on the Sega Genesis and had a sequel/crossover game with Double Dragon. The game possesses extremely fluid gameplay and original music and sound effects that perfectly suit its' "beat em up style." The game included a variety level designs that go back and forth between beat em up, platform, and racing. All of which (beyond the second level) are infamously difficult. The Nerd reviews this game and demonstrates it's impeccably cooperative two-player mode with his very recognizable theme song artist. The pair show us how a two-player beat em up game should be programmed as they pay homage to one of the most underrated classics from the NES library.

Just yesterday I actually met James and Kyle at a convention. I got them both to sign my copy of Battletoads. It seemed appropriate, after this review.

His halfassed attempts at music is legendary but he has moved on now. You're watching history dude. Imagine that your mom had a boyfriend that was really cool back in the day but she recorded everything. Now your dad is helping her put all of those old videos online and you happen to watch one with that cool dude in it. That's kind of how this is except your dad isn't that cool and your mom has an entire series of videos about her boyfriends. Or maybe that's my mom. Whatever. You get it. Missed opportunities are missed... forever. You can take from this that if you're ever gonna take "life by the horns" then you need to become a cowboy and life needs to become a rodeo bull itching to kick your balls up into your girl scrotem. Maybe I'm overdoing this but still... my point is valid. Hindsight has a huge advantage and sometimes that advantage is that your worthless nerd dad mated with your hot mom and even though your mom realized her mistake you got to exist from the deal! Unfortunately, that line goes from funny to sad when you realise that in the NTSC version, there's a glitch in the cling winger stage where the 2 player's cling winger doesn't move, & since you have to start over when one of the toads dies, it really is impossible.

This is now my favorite episode. I love the interactions and when James encourages Kyle to curse properly.

I remember people disliking the review before, Deadly Towers, because it was all fan jokes that were hit or miss. And some disliked this one because they thought Kyle as a guest wasn't as funny.

Battletoads was one of the funnest 2 player games NES had. It was extremely hard, though, and definitely frustrating at times. I can't think of another game that was so consistently frustrating yet that I absolutely love. They straddled a fine line there.
Absolutely. It's the hardest game ever, but it's a fun kind of hard. No matter how hard it is, whith each try I get better snd better. I want to best it some day!

For level 2 split the screen top, and bottom. Much easier. They really should have put in a 2 player mode A and B where you can't hit each other by accident. Like double dragon, or River City Ransom. Especially considering how hard this game is. Truth is a beat em' up shouldn't be this hard. This genre should be all about fun, not difficulty that makes you want to head butt your TV.
Yet it hooked you up so much that you kept getting back to it. So I guess somehow their strategy worked?
Sadly, even playing like 2 or 3 hours per day of this as a kid, I could never get past Level 9 or 10. Really fucking hard shit (although nowadays I would try to play more strategically - you don't really do that when you're 8).

September 2019 and still one of the my favorite episodes. Kyle is a bit camera shy but does fine, and their interactions are genuine and funny. Also love the outtakes video 😊 This one is a gem.
