    As was explained, monks do this, as well as other sales pursuits, depending on the monastery, in order to self sustain financially. Specific to beer and other alcohols, monks and others began brewing beer hundreds of years ago because water was not treated and full of harmful bacteria.

    Though I am no beer drinker, the beer the Monks are brewing looks delicious. I am going to try it if I find it here in Southern California. ^^

    For those who ask why Catholic monks brew beer, here's probably some fact that can help you...
    In ancient and medieval times, people drank alcoholic beverages instead of water to quench their thirst. Water back then was poorly managed and sanitized. Particularly in big cities, water was often dirty due to poor sanitation. Even drinking simply water was thought to make you sick, which consider the state of water back then I think was fully logical. The process of brewing is believed to have killed the disease-causing bacteria, so brewed alcoholic beverages were preferred over water. Monasteries and even large educational institutes used to have their own brewery, operated to quench the thirsts of their staffs, students, and inhabitants. Other than that, the Trappists are known for their principle of self-sustenance. Brewing and selling beer is the way for them to get income to sustain their community in Europe and now in America.
    Even in countries where they did not brew beer, they still made and sell produces to get income to sustain their community. Here in Indonesia, the Trappist monks of Rawaseneng monastery made dairy products, one of them which is a special milk drink. The chocolate flavored one is especially soooo gewd, it tastes not like drinking milk but like eating ice cream (you probably know what I'm talking about).

    Monasteries have always traditional brewed beer. The original intention was to offer substance in liquid form during times of fasting. One of the most famous famous German beers still popular today is "Franziskaner" which is named after the Franciscan Bavarian Monks who originally created the beer recipe.

      There's 1 in the states, 1 in the UK & Italy, and 7 in Belgium.
      Not very local, but worth the "pilgrimage," nonetheless

    This is so weird. Didn't St.Paul preach to be sober at all times?

    • @etrnlygr8tful87
      @etrnlygr8tful87 9 років тому +2

      ajayNee Why is this weird? Brewing beer & sobriety are 2 different thing, not because they are brewing and have the brewery on site, that they will all be drunkard & not sober. These monks have strict routines in their work & prayers, I don't think they even have time to consume more than a glass or bottle of beer.

    • @teahea12340
      @teahea12340 9 років тому +1

      ajayNee I don't remember whether St. Paul preached to be sober at all times, but it makes sense and if he did, drinking beer doesn't mean you'll be affected and get drunk. I'm guessing moderation is key. :p

    • @ajayNemintane
      @ajayNemintane 9 років тому +1

      etrnlygr8tful True. But how many people are going to get drunk from these bottles and do stuff I don't even want to say.

    • @teahea12340
      @teahea12340 9 років тому

      ajayNee I think the Trappists are selling it in good faith. I watched a video where a Dominican was asked what to do about suspicion that when one gives alms to a beggar, the money might be abused. The Dominican said that if one knows the money will be abused, it is prudent to withold the money. Otherwise, one gives the money in good faith that it will be used responsibly (this makes sense, since one doesn't have reason to assume ill initially). I think it would be somewhat similar here. The exchange is done in good faith that one doesn't lead theirself down a wrong path. But if they knew what was happening, maybe they might withold their good (though I don't know if they can legally do that to a customer if they run their brewery as a business). There are many goods that can be abused when improperly used such as medication.
      Also, I know that the beer the Trappists make in Europe (I forget where) only come in small numbers so people probably can't buy enough to get drunk.
      I hope this helps!

      KingElrosTarMinyatur How is this considered "modernism", didn't they drink wine during early times? Jesus did turn water into wine remember? Also, they do this as part of their work & to sustain the financial need of the monastery...they do not just depend on donation, they work so that they can earn money to repair the monastery, to support charity, etc.

      Oh no ! It seems to me that they brew Dubbel ( double, dark ) and Triple ( pale ) . If these are +/- the same as Westmalle, Rochefort, Chimay or Westvleteren ( the main Trappist breweries in Belgium where they learned the trade ) then that would correspond with about 8% ABV for the dark Trappist ale and 11-12% ABV for the Triple.
      Greets from Belgium !

    Brew on a 5bbl system to support this monestary and then you will experience true manual labor. Your high tech system is wonderful, but far from labor intensive. Get dirty, get sweaty, get schwifty. Cry into your wort and sweat like men of God.
