"There's always the option for an individual monk to give up alcohol, to give up beer, to give up wine, but traditionally beer has been something that monks have drunk more of during Lent because they're fasting. The monks eat only one meal a day, often late in the afternoon, so beer was a way to add sustenance to that meal."

    17. SOUNDBITE (English) Father Benedict, Sub prior at the Benedictine Monastery in Norcia:
"So many people are afraid of going to church, afraid of talking about God, afraid of things that have to do with religion. But they're so much more easy, when talking about beer. So for us it's a way to open a door; a door that maybe they've never wanted open before. Then naturally from a material point of view, this also helps us restore our monastery. We have ancient buildings here. The crypt comes from the 1st century. We have 14th century walls around the whole property and all of them need constant maintenance, constant support, so it also enables us to keep the building not just in shape, but also beautify it, make it into something really beautiful to glorify God."

"We looked at making a blonde and a Belgian strong dark, which are kind of the symbols of monastic brewing, so we decided on that style, because it's well known, it's representing monastic beers, they're pretty traditional, and I personally like that type of beer."

I appreciate that it's a monastic tradition to make a variety of alcoholic drinks, and of course the income generated is needed, but are monks oblivious to the wreckage exacerbated by alcohol?

Being an Alcoholic is an individual choice like they say drink responsibly or don’t drink at all

I think that He who turned water into wine, and the Apostle who encouraged Timothy to, “take some wine for your stomach,” would not fully agree with you. Instead, it is the disordered use of alcohol that causes wreckage to the soul.

Alcohol is GOD'S gift to mankind and must be used carefully, said a Catholic Saint. I have also read about the miracle where there was no water to drink for the faithful people and workers until a Saint prayed and GOD made their whole pot filled with beer that everyone had plenty to drink and it is still a miracle today. Also St Brigid of Ireland wishes for rivers of beer as a praise and thanksgiving and honour for JESUS and his love. Alcohol isn't bad at all, especially because it promotes joy, accord, bonding and friendship when had together in a group. However drunkenness is a bad thing when one is a slave to the Alcohol and only craves it all the time. Also when we become excessively drunk, we do wrong things which are evil and sinful as we give into excess pleasure and lose control of ourselves. So the real enemy is drunkenness. I agree as you have wisely said that it turns people evil. Thus one must drink responsibly and in limits and not be a slave for drunkenness and excess pleasure. If we are weak and prone to evil acts or getting drunk all the time then it's better not to drink. GOD bless you, VIVA CHRISTO REY AVE MARIA AMEN ❤️ 👏 😃
