As a plus size woman who has made more the one sweater I can say that I can never follow the stitch count on a pattern and the best sweaters I have made (for myself and others) are the ones that I started off winging it taking inspiration from a pattern design. My best advice is to try the stitch you wanna use with different hook sizes, once you decide the one you like best do a swatch (it does not have to be big) and use it to measure your body to figure out your stitch count and then go from there. Keep trying the project on again and again and don't be afraid to change things, skip or add stitches to get the shape you want, re-do parts or even undo everything and start all over again. Almost every time I make a garment I do it from start to finish at least twice, I don't mind undoing the work because I rather invest the time and effort than wasting yarn on something I feel uncomfortable in or, worse, never wearing it. Just have fun and enjoy the process even with all the hesitations and frustrations, at the end you will have a piece to show off proudly
Noelia I agree completely. Keep trying it on again and again and don’t be afraid to change things to make it work. I love the process as much (ok, more) than the finished project, so I don’t hesitate to frog back and try again applying what I’ve learned. Sure there was a learning curve how to create garments to fit me, but that’s part of the fun in my book.
thanks for this, i am always so critical of myself when i have to rip something out, but it's honestly just part of the process, particularly with a garment made to fit a specific body.
'It's not difficult, It's just new' is such a mantra to live by. We all learn the most from situations that are the hardest. I've just found your channel and it's inspired me so much to get back into crafts 🥰
Your sweater is beautiful! For all the anxiety you had around the collar, I think it’s my favorite part; it sits perfectly on you! Your husband is right; you’re beautiful and the sweater, as pretty as it is, brings the focus to your face and simply accentuates your beauty rather than distract from it. Welcome to the joy of sweater making! It’s my absolute favorite wearable to make.
Toni, Toni, Toni! As a crochet teacher this is why I recommend your channel and IG to all my students. Not only are you a great teacher but you always keep it real! You accurately show the love and pain that goes into projects and your honesty is so refreshing in an online maker world that often skips over all the challenges us makers face. Your sweater is beautiful, and you look absolutely stunning in it! I'm so proud of your resiliency and perseverance! BTW you and your husband are adorable together!!
Your sweater is gorgeous! I can so relate to hesitating to try a pattern because I fear the plus size is not all that plus. Even on patterns from people I thought would know a plus sized body, I have been disappointed. I have made a couple of cardigans, but I have never made a sweater. I feel your frustration. After spending time looking for the perfect pattern, spending money on the perfect yarn, only to have your vision blown to bits, I could spit nails. Thank you for this video!
I have to echo what so many have already said; it’s refreshing to know that an artist you so admire is willing to show vulnerability and doubt. Too often social media shows only the beautiful result, and doesn’t allow people to commiserate over the long road of mistakes that led to that end. Thank you! For showing us your thought process. For showing the not-so-pretty parts of our craft. For allowing yourself to be open and honest with strangers. 💜
I’m so grateful for you. I decided this year to make my first sweater. As a plus size woman I was so nervous. I have been calling it my ugly sweater and almost scrapped the whole project. Watching this video helped me get the courage to finish. After blocking it and weaving in the ends it looked AMAZING 🤩. Thanks for the encouragement to keep going!
So we can’t get upset if we see you wearing the sweater every single time you come on because it’ll be a wonderful moment to remember, and to share with us as it looks so phenomenal
I have made over 20 sweaters for myself. I have found a channel that makes garments to your measurements as opposed to pattern sizes. All you need is a tape measure and try on as you go. Works perfectly every time. I have also knit myself an Irish Aran sweater that took me six months. It was WAY out of my comfort zone but I stuck with it and now it is the garment I am most proud of. I wear it whenever I can. Thank you for this great video. Your sweater is gorgeous!
That's what I usually go for also. I got this mix problem of a short body and being a thicc girl with a larger chest which requires a longer length. Closest thing I've found that fit in store bought is those "boyfriend" shirts that are floating around now, which are essentially a slim cut man's T-shirt. As for the sweater she made, I'd have left the length and gone tunic style with it, but that's purely my taste and I like the movement.
Oh, Toni!! Your sweater turned out beautifully 😍!! I was shocked when you said this was your first! I have been crocheting since I was 8....let's just say over 50 years. Been watching you for at least 2 years and have learned so much from you! Looks like you had an amazing time at the festival!!! How I would love to do that!!!!🥰 This was so much fun!!! Oh,,,I have made many sweaters....for myself and others...just remember to try on as you go....different yarns are going to work up differently.....some may grow, some may not and some may not play nice at all....but the journey is worth it. And don't lock yourself in to the "color" that's on the pattern or eventhe yarn...!! Be adventurous and pick colors you to wear and a yarn that's similar...you can alwayschangethe hook size for fit...make notes as you go....and do YOU!! Be safe, be happy and be blessed!!!🥰
You are SO real, honest, animated and a boss at expressing yourself. Oh, and let's now forget a crochet babe queen!! Love you.. i relate to your vibe like a BFF.....
My top tip is to ALWAYS block your swatch. I made my first sweater from superwash merino. I didn’t block my swatch and didn’t know that superwash yarn grows quite a bit with washing. I still wear the sweater because I worked so hard on it, but I learned my lesson!
Came here to say the same thing! I think it's more likely the superwash treatment that caused the growth rather than the weight of the garment itself. The end result is absolutely amazing though!
Toni, this is the gold standard of videos. I’m brand new to crochet (following your granny square tutorials at the moment) and am excited for my first big project. I’m not starting with a sweater-I want to make *MY* afghan first. But this video provided so much encouragement and hope and was just a reminder that it’s hard because it’s new. Thank you. 💜
Toni, you are my FAVORITE. This was an emotional rollercoaster and I had my hands up the entire time! Thank you for taking hours out of your life to preserve this memory for the world, but most importantly, YOU. Standing ovation. I have never crocheted a sweater for myself. I am a Male, and I am slim, and I think that I would rather crochet a cardigan but I have not found the “right” pattern.
This was the best crochet video ever!!! I love you so much!! I laughed with you, freaked out with you and then celebrated with you. I rarely stick to a pattern, I usually will have to tweak it to make it fit me cause most patterns are not correct for my body type!! I make a lot of stuff for myself to wear and my dumb butt never writes down what I did to change the pattern so I never can make another 🤦🏽♀️. Thank you so much for allowing me to join you on your sweater journey!! Oh and I just got your book and I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time trying to learn Tunisian crochet!! Girl, my shit is wonky!!! It makes me laugh so hard!! I’ve been crocheting for about 24 years and learning a new way to crochet is hilarious!!!
You said everything I’ve always wanted to say to so many designers! I wish I saw you at Rhinebeck because you are one of my first crochet teachers. I would have said THANKS. I’ve only been crocheting for two years but I got several of your kits, took your course and look forward to finally getting to them in January after all my Christmas gifts are finished and shipped. PS. Your family is adorable. ❤
I have made several wearables. And I have made so many mistakes/the pattern didn’t work for my body type. My advice would be, don’t be afraid to make those mistakes. Stretch that problem solving muscle. The pride I feel when I get a pattern to work for me, it’s pure joy. Honestly, once you start making wearables, you’ll find that you want to create your very own patterns. So I suggest finding a pattern you like and take your time. Problem solve as you go. It opens up a whole new world.
can't believe I actually spotted my LYS's owner and team in the montage of Rhinebeck footage. Its like my two worlds colliding, that of the online crochet and knit community with my day to day knit and crochet life irl... so cool
"This is made for Toni and I'm obsessed." I'm tearing up at this :') Knitting my own sweaters have truly made me much more comfortable in my body, so I really appreciated your little talk at the "4 DAYS LEFT" part. I'm absolutely amazed by you, and that sweater is STUNNING. Thank you for the video
Hi, y'all I am fifteen years old, and I am working on my second sweater. I think that if you want to make a sweater, DON'T get bored. You are going to look back on your experience for all of your life, so if it gets too hard, let it sit for a while, or watch a fun movie during the repetitive parts. Enjoy the process!! Thanks, Toni, I really enjoyed it!
Hi Tony, I am so proud of your creative crochet talent. The Rhinebeck Sweater is gorgeous and you look stunningly lovely wearing it. Enjoy it. BTW, you look 20 years younger without hiding your beautiful natural hair. Have fun at the Fair. Looking forward to hearing and viewing all of your experiences while there. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰Dolori
I started a granny square sweater/jacket project over a year ago, but began to lose confidence in the direction i was going. So, it’s maybe 1/3 of the way complete. I haven’t touched it in many months. I have only been a serious crocheter for less than three years. I relearned the basics early in the pandemic. So much of the skill that I’ve acquired, I learned from Toni’s UA-cam videos. I was surprised to see her struggle so with her sweater. But seeing this actually encourages me to return to my abandoned project. In exposing and working through her own self doubt, Toni teaches, not just about crochet, but great life lessons as well. “It’s not difficult, it’s just new.”
I’m so glad you showed your struggles working your sweater. It helped me realize that all my struggles are totally normal and that they can be conquered.
I skipped through the video a bit, and when I got almost to the end I was so excited that you were leaving the tails out. Then when you said you were weaving them in I got sad because the tails looked so cute and amplified the “I made this sweater and I’m proud of it.”
Congrats on your first sweater. It is truly beautiful and fits to perfection. Thank you also for standing on your soapbox. As a tall and curvy woman, I love to knit and crochet garments that compliment my current and future figure; your words put a smile on my face as I remembered the numerous times not finding anything that fit and having to make my own sweater. I hope to one day venture to a festival and befriend people in the crafting community. Also, thank you for sharing your amazing journey.
I've not made a sweater yet but plenty of cardigans. My husband teases me because I am always looking for new patterns. The fit, drape, and feel are never quite right with the ones I've made. You've inspired me to keep trying. Eventually, all the stars will align, and I will find the perfect pattern and yarn.
It was refreshing to see that even such an accomplished designer as you are struggled with making a sweater for yourself. That made me feel so much better about my occasional struggles with following a pattern, and getting the fit right for my own body. Maybe I'll tackle the challenge of making a pullover sweater for myself after all my crocheted Christmas gifts are completed. You looked freaked out about that collar! 😳 But you really created a gorgeous sweater, and you look great in it!! Thank you for including us on your journey.
I am an eternal beginner intermediate crotcheter. I heard about the Sheep & Wool years ago & finally attended this season for the experience, the foliage & a day trip with the grands. Needless to say I was overwhelmed with it all. We enjoyed our day. I purchased wood flutes for the kiddies & a souvenir long sleeve tee shirt for myself. Now I'm ready to embrace the art of crotchet. Thanks Toni for your good vibes!!!!
I always have to remind myself that I GET to do this I don't HAVE to do this. No one will ever be able to take the things I make away from me and my talent. I also strongly suggest just jumping in and have fun! Failure doesn't happen, we have happy accidents and learning opportunities! Plus we can always try again! 💜💜💜
The way you hold your body when you put that finished sweater on says it all... absolutely beautiful and you look stunning in it. I have never made a sweater for myself. There are so many amazing ones I have seen... but... I'm quite chunky and I'm no good at sizing and yarn math so I get so nervous when it comes to figuring out the sizes I would have to make. Your videos are always a highlight for me. Love your enthusiasm and the derail you go in to. Lots of love from a huge fan xxx
This video was so amazing to watch! As a guy who's tried multiple times to make something that actually fits well on my body, it was very reassuring to see that you also went through that stage with your sweater too. I am transgender, so every bump and lump that I don't like is often accentuated by the cardigans that I try to make for myself, especially seeing as most patterns are made for the female form. One day I will make the masculine crochet sweater of my dreams that fits my body how I want it to... it's just a matter of trial and error I suppose!
I've made many wearables over the past 5 years, and best advice I can give is to let go of perfectionism and let the mistakes happen. The mistakes are learning stepping stones! You learn best from making mistakes and puzzling out how to fix it VS just frogging and restarting! Lovely sweater, Toni, it turned out so beautiful!
never made a sweater but i've made tops and other wearables, and if i have one piece of advice to give to the newbies about making your own clothes, you have to be enjoying it, because there will be parts you have to undo, and if you're not enjoying the act of making it, its gonna feel like a chore and its gonna be torture. on another note, you look amazing in your sweater and you making sure the sleeves have the same stripes makes me very happy
I’m actually working on your Kima Cardi right now. I think I put it aside last year because I’m not happy with my post-pandemic body. But now I’m determined to finish the sweater perfectly for ME no matter what. Thanks for the inspiring words. ❤
Started following you a couple weeks ago and have really enjoyed your vids. This one on your first crochet sweater was great. Loved the way you carried us thru your journey each step of the way. Your enthusiasm was contagious! I have made 2 crochet sweaters - one was over 20 years ago. I ran out of the special yarn, though I had what the pattern called for I thought, so my sleeves ended up short instead of long. Made another this last winter with a variety of yarns and enjoyed it so much. Plan to make more. Keep making your fun videos please!
It’s one o’clock in the morning and I should be in bed, but after taking the grandkids trick or treating, I needed a wind down so I turned your latest video on. I am SO glad I did. What a treasure! I enjoyed the journey, the couch scenes, the ups and downs, the wonderful holiday, and everything in between. It’s such a treat to actually watch something uplifting, informative, hopeful, and inspiring. Thank you for being a light in this chaotic world. You’re awesome! P.S. Love the sweater!
Hi Toni! I just discovered you on a short! You had made a very pretty light green sweater! So cute! Then I clicked on your TL Yarn Craft to see what else you had going and I clicked on this video! So glad I did! I really enjoyed your video and love how real you are! Fun! I’m like another gal said, would love 💕 to be your neighbor/friend! I am 74 and have been crocheting, knitting, and embroidering since I was about 10 years old. Not consistently but have made many hats, scarves and blankets! Never have made a sweater for anyone! I don’t know if I’d have the fortitude to rip it out and start over! But I appreciate how you really worked hard at how to fit yourself. I admire you! Anyway I subscribed so I can learn more from you and enjoy your videos! Thank you so much! I loved the sweater you made! Very pretty!
I’m very new to crocheting and watching you struggle with this sweater and then watching your attitude towards the project change from dread to enthusiasm has encouraged me. I feel like I’m going to make mistakes and it’s okay, keep moving forward, don’t give up! ❤❤
You did your thing girl! If this is your first the sweater that follow are going to be outstanding! I've been crocheting for over 40 years and when I went to yarn shows over 20 years ago there may have been one or two other people of color. Seeing your video and seeing so many people of color, it makes me want to get back out there! I get along with everyone but I don't like feeling like the goldfish in the bowl. Catholic school gave me my fill of that. 😄
TL a time ago I mentioned that I have worked with you earlier and how I have returned to relearn, refollow with you again. I really enjoy participating in craft projects. Many of your group including you are very much younger than I and probably weren't even born when I began knitting. My grandmom taught me to crochet and knit when I was a little girl. My grandmom would look at a picture and WA LA she could produce it. When she discovered my interest in crafting she said she wanted me read a book that covered all of the crafts; she didn't want me learn the manner in which crafted. I crocheted, knitted and sewed in spells. One project I worked with was a jumpsuit; I wish I had kept it, I can't recall what happened to it, I do recall I had help completing the project and it was beautiful. I mentioned this because of your excitement over your sweater; and I felt the same way when I worked on my pantsuit project. I found the pattern, I think I would like do it again.
I literally love that you’re hanging out with the hubby and the kitties!!! That’s exactly how I get all my crocheting done, but with my two pupperinas, and my hubby sassy that I keep missing important parts of the show! 😂 Thank you for all the videos you make for us! You’re truly the only UA-cam channel I watch every single video you make from start to finish!
Thanks! I am a knitter, but have thoroughly enjoyed watching and hearing about journey through this challenging design! Major kudos to you for pushing forward and being so transparent. I am so impressed and love your positive energy🌟🌟🌟🌞
So glad you shared this! I FEEL this experience of going through a wearable and winging it because patterns don’t always account for larger bodies. I love seeing you power through to a beautiful sweater!
As a 36yr old masc them who is the oddball out because I love crocheting, I had no idea this festival existed! I now have a new goal in life to make a sweater and attend this event!! Love you, your channel, your creativity, and the positivity you bring! Hope to see you at the next one! ❤❤
I bought the tunisian crochet book and I can't wait for tutorials on your channel to follow along with. You have been a tremendous help to me in my crochet journey. Keep on keeping on because you are irreplaceable ✨️ 💯 💛.
Yes, quite a few actually. I was a returning crocheter (retired pro weaver and dyer who prior to that was a handspinner with own sheep and did a bit of crochet--but that was a LONG time ago and most was knitting. with handspun) because I needed better crochet basics. I discovered Tunisian through her videos and now my 2 crochet favorites are Tunisian (I have her book too) and overlay crochet--and found for some things like mosaic done via Tunisian. She has some very good fairly basic Tunisian videos to get you started--which is what got me started on Tunisian--and then learned about her book when she talked about it being published. Check out her channel--she has a playlist with 49 Tunisian videos.
I finally knit a sweater vest (it felt unintimidating compared to a swear, but it was actually harder than the cardigan I'm doing now! I had to pick up the neck and sleeves, lol) after almost 20 years of knitting but never making a garment. OH MY GOD I LOVE IT. Knitting has been revolutionized for me. I've finally broken the barrier of using patterns by realizing maybe they're not as hard to read as a full-grown adult with lots of internet access than as a 12 year-old who had to use the library computer to look stuff up. Now I just want to make garments! I'm finishing a cardigan for my mom right now, am going to immediately dive into a more customized version of the same cardigan for myself, then there's an idea for a sideways sweater vest, and maybe a skirt? Agh, It's a whole new world.
This has been an enjoyable and instructive video! Thank you! I crocheted a “box” style sweater for my 3 yo daughter, 43 years ago. It was very cute!😊 I’ve thought about making a Sweater for myself, but haven’t. I, too, am plus sized. My Mom knitted a boatneck sweater for me when I was a teenager, also a hat which I still have. I haven’t decided what style of sweater I want to make. I’ve considered cardigans, pullovers, tops, but not any particular stitches or motifs. At 71, it’s a matter of picking something, and making it.
I think if you as an expert and mentor. Your work is so lovely, I’d not have guessed you hadn’t already created perfect garments. Thank you for sharing your first sweater journey. Your perseverance through frustrations is soooo reassuring. I avoided sweaters because I’m worried about things going all wonky and not fitting. I’ve been thinking 2023 should be my dive into wearables. Thanks for the extra push and encouragement!
The first sweater (and only sweater) I made was for my partner. I followed the pattern exactly for the 2X size and it was so huge we could both fit in it. (I think the obnoxiously large collar should have been my dead giveaway lmao) I laugh at it now and he has it hanging in his closet even though he can't wear it. I was really bummed about it then, but your videos on making sweaters is giving me the courage to try again. Maybe I can make us matching ones, cuz I'm about that cutesy stuff. 😂
I love making sweaters. Gauge is so important as you found out. The difference in a hook or needle size will give you a sweater for you or for a different size. Also, try it on. Even if it's bottom up, you can see how much ease there is or isn't and how long you want to make it based on where you want your sweater or top to end. I have a long torso and flared hips, so my length is different from someone who doesn't have that. Most importantly: Don't give up. Frog it, put it in time out, wing some of it or all of it, but don't give up.
Thank you for shedding the light on how all patterns don't necessarily fit the way we would like. You can create your own design.! Beautiful sweater and fits you perfectly!
I love this "journal" so much. First, beautiful sweater on a beautiful woman! Second, thank you for your honesty about the whole Rhinebeck sweater mystique, the pressure involved, and the general issues involved in making a sweater for yourself. Thank you too for noting the issues around grading patterns. There is more to it than just increasing or decreasing the stitch count. The crochet & knitting worlds need more of this!
i can so relate to the emotional roller coaster of making wearables. You truly go through a whole story arc hoping that it will end with living happily ever after.
It’s so beautiful!!! It’s so nice to see someone incredibly accomplished still get excited about problem solving and making mistakes while creating art. Great inspiration for newbies like me💕💕
I learned how to crochet when I was a teenager. I visited a senior living center with my summer camp and learned from very gracious and loving ladies. I pick it up every now and then but now I want to spend more time crocheting regularly. I found your channel the other day and already subscribed. My next project will be a cardigan and this video is great to prepare me! And your husband is so sweet!
Ok, three things. 1. Go girl. You are SOOOO inspiring! You’re the reason I learned Tunisian! (And the teacher, and the pattern supplier….) 2. Never doubted you for a minute! As soon as you decided to do a sweater, I knew it was as good as done. And it’s beautiful. 3. Can we talk about the toenails? WHO is under stress to get ready, to get a sweater figured out and finished, AND has an immaculate pedi? All the love! ♥️
So last year I made a sweater, loved the process but got the gauge wrong and it was too small. I felt so discouraged I didn't make another one. After this video, I am blocking the too small sweater in the hopes that I can stretch it AND most importantly I am planning on making a new sweater that I can love and wear with pride! Thank you!
Yes!!! Get back to it! I'm also picking up a disappointing project from a year ago. I understand so much more crochet and I'm actually excited. We can do it!
If it’s still not right, consider pulling the seams apart and adding some panels to the sides and shoulders to make it the right size. You could even do the panels in a cable pattern or another stitch to add interest. That way they become a feature of the garment and an upgrade.
I have been crocheting for 54 years and I have never made a sweater. Shawls, ponchos, other wearables, but never anything with sleeves. I cannot sew (as my friend says, "It's crocheting, not sewing"), so I cannot piece together individual pieces that most patterns have you create. And I simply don't think I can make a top down or bottom up sweater to fit. But I enjoyed this video immensely. All my friends go to Rhinebeck, but as a caretaker, I cannot travel, so I appreciate the vicarious tour. Thanks, Toni!
I don't have a good relationship with my mom and I just think it's so lovely that you and your mom share this interest and she's so proud of your work on your sweater (as she should be!!). Thanks for sharing this whole journey. ❤
I’m so glad you chose to share this journey! It was inspiring to see how open you were with the struggles with the neck ribbing and how that made you feel. Even though I have been crocheting for over 20 years, I have really struggled with a fitted wearable. This video is truly inspiring! Thank you!💜
I am an avid Quilter. It's my thang. But I am also a knitter--which I find patterns sooo much easier to read than crochet--a crocheter, a cross stitcher....Here lately, I've been sitting down more often in the evenings to crochet. It's relaxing. But aside from any of that, the main reason I keep coming back to your channel is because YOU. ARE. REAL. I love your sweater. It's perfect on you. And the colors are gorgeous. Like you. ❤
Your sweater is beautiful. I love the troubleshoot you've shared. This is what make crocheting a sweater worth watching. Designers never share the challenges idk why!!! This what makes me gravitate to crocheting a sweater just pure honesty.
I am sitting on the couch watching you crochet this sweater. Then my husband said, make that for him. I am just a beginner lol. He has such giant expectations about my ability to learn new things. ❤
Your sweater is GORGEOUS!! I’m so impressed that this was your first! I am a sweater knitter-my advice for picking patterns is check out the projects made of that pattern and look for people that made your size and look like your body shape. That helps me decide which patterns my work best for my body. I can’t wait to see your next sweater!!
This video is amazing! From the anxieties, to that BEAUTIFUL collar, to the important (and relatable) note about plus sizing, i'll definitely be watching it again when I make my first sweater. I'm still relatively new to crocheting, I learned how to do it from your videos in 2020, so it was honestly pretty relieving to see someone who in my eyes is goddess at crocheting feel some trepidation towards making their first sweater! It came out amazing, you should be proud.
I am a relatively new subscriber but I've been into crochet for 55 years...just had my 60th birthday. I have never made anything for myself. I give everything away that was intended for me.
I just started crocheting my first sweater two days ago & I am experiencing so many of the same feelings and obstacles you describe in this video. I am sitting here in tears of empathy, compassion, and hope. Thank you for making this video. I am so encouraged to continue to completion of this sweater & am filled with optimism that it will be one of my favorite pieces when I’m done. I learned to crochet over 11 years ago & had only made hats, scarves, fingerless gloves, blankets, and amigurumi til now. Thank you, again, much for sharing this part of your journey. 💖✨ You have helped me more than you may ever realize.
I have crocheted and knit for over 50 years. Never made a sweater. Simply because it’s just too much. Too much brain power, focus, stitch counting….. just so complicated. Plus I have put on weight. So, another reason. But I like my crochet or knit projects to be relaxing. So I can sit and crochet, hold a lap cat, talk to my hubby, and watch a show. All at the same time. But, I absolutely LOVED this video! Loved your beautiful honesty and infectious beautiful smile. I love love your sweater!!! It’s gorgeous and fits you so perfectly! Thanks for taking me on your journey! You are just awesome ❤❤❤
Well done making your first sweater. It looks beautiful on you, really complimenting your skin tone.👏 As you were explaining the process, I felt your pain. I felt the same when I crocheted my first dress using my own design - the worry! But just like you, I felt on top of the world when I finished it and it fit me better than anything I owned. I still get compliments on it years later. Thanks for the tip on blocking heavy projects using steam. I'll be trying that next time.😊
OMGosh Toni!!! It is GORGEOUS! And I really hope you will do a tutorial on your sweater pattern. You made it your own and that’s exactly what I have to do also. Us fuller figured gals have to adjust patterns, it just comes with the territory and I don’t mind “customizing” what I’m making. We definitely need a tutorial on your sweater though, especially that neckline! ❤😊
Congrats on finishing your first sweater! I too had to learn early on how to modify patterns to fit my individual body and preferences. At this point, patterns are simply a guide and I've used YT to learn different ways to tailor patterns to my personal needs and wants. The more sweaters you make, the more you learn about what styles, methods and modifications work best. Good luck with your future makes!
Oh Toni your sweater is so beautiful! It is so refreshing to see that I am not the only one who struggles with wanting to make a sweater but am afraid it will not fit correctly. You gave me the inspiration to try making a plus size sweater for myself. Thank you!
Toni, it's 130 a.m. here in Sydney, and I have just weaved in the last end on my 1st sweater. Even after 30 years of crochet, I was too scared to try, but watching you inspired me. Thank you so much.
The sweater turned out SO beautiful and you looks absolutely stunning in it!! Those colors, the shape, the neckline, you killed it!! You’re now giving me inspiration to make a sweater with a random color striping pattern. Thank you for the encouraging words ❤️
This video made me feel a lot better. I am pattern testing for someone and it’s been a tougher thing for me than I thought (I’m new to reading patters not just video tutorials) and I was feeling so down bc I felt like I was the only one in the testing group that was struggling. Seeing someone like you show the hard parts and the frustration makes me feel so much better and that we all have these moments in our yarn journey. I feel much less down now :)
This sweater is beautiful. I love the colors on you and you did a really nice job. As a plus size woman you really hit some great points. I've never made anything for myself to wear but you've inspired me to look into it more. Also I really appreciate your talk on grading a pattern for plus sizes. I mean really, no matter how big my belly or butt is, my arms are not any longer. I have so many store bought items that have such long sleeves that I'm just pretty sure they are not the right length for anyone. Great video!
I looooove how you keep it real with the emotional rollercoaster of not knowing if one thing is going to work until you’ve finished your whole piece. Relatable as hell lol 😂 love your videos and listening to that soothing voice while I crochet ❤️❤️❤️
With the audio playing out of my car speaker, the “Hey Siri” part really messed with my phone 😂 I’m obsessed with your videos! I started crochet about 4 months ago, and it’s taken over my brain, my closet, my couch, my Christmas list…it’s such an amazing hobby! You’ve inspired me to try out Tunisian crochet, and your book is making its way to me overseas. You’re personality is so warm and comforting. Thank you for your content and contributions to this space ❤
You are more than brave to do such a huge “first” in such a tight time frame. First, to use so many colors on a first sweater is huge. To match the colors throughout the sweater is huge. To do a gauge swatch and then have the gauge be wrong for your body AND to keep going, gigantic! Love the end result. I love how God uses the mundane to teach the divine. You learned so many lessons and shared the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat! Love your transparency! Congratulations on finishing.
That is my new favorite saying if i may pinch it from you, "If things don't go well there is always ice-cream" Love IT!!
oh wow. when you got to the part about learning to love your body, I started openly weeping. Guess it's time to make a sweater. lol
I am so impressed with what you have accomplished! You are on the home stretch!
Do u have a channel?
As a plus size person, this is so helpful! Thank you
thanks for this, i am always so critical of myself when i have to rip something out, but it's honestly just part of the process, particularly with a garment made to fit a specific body.
Yes, I had the same response. That collar!
Very well said!
"If things don't go well, there's always ice cream." My new life motto.
What channel, if you don't mind me asking?
@@captainkellykat5378 On the Hook Crochet with Jeanne
That's what I usually go for also. I got this mix problem of a short body and being a thicc girl with a larger chest which requires a longer length. Closest thing I've found that fit in store bought is those "boyfriend" shirts that are floating around now, which are essentially a slim cut man's T-shirt. As for the sweater she made, I'd have left the length and gone tunic style with it, but that's purely my taste and I like the movement.
When you mentioned finding a channel that works to dimensions, I somehow KNEW it was on the hook with Jeanne. LOL
You put so much risk into this project! You look marvelous in your crochet sweater. Great colors for you as well.
That is a great tip!! Thank you for that👏🏿👏🏿
Toni, this is the gold standard of videos.
Crocheting on the couch with your kitties and your man! That’s what it looks like an my house too
I have made several wearables.
This is literally the reason I haven't made a sweater. I'm convinced I'll get bored, never finish, and be sad.
I love that you gave your cat privacy lol and you made a gorgeous sweater! I want to make one myself now
Hi Tony, I am so proud of your creative crochet talent. The Rhinebeck Sweater is gorgeous and you look stunningly lovely wearing it. Enjoy it.
BTW, you look 20 years younger without hiding your beautiful natural hair.
Have fun at the Fair. Looking forward to hearing and viewing all of your experiences while
there. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰Dolori
35:50 made me tear up!!! THANK YOU for this video. I’ve been afraid to make garments and this has given me so much inspiration! 🙏🏼😍
That is gorgeous. The neckline came out perfectly - so flattering. 👌🏼
I think my favorite part is how happy you are wearing it. It makes me happy.
Thank you for all the videos you make for us!
Mielle she does have some Tunisian crochet videos! That’s how I learned it before her book came out. She’s a great teacher!❤
I haven't even don't a sweater yet the one I tried I ran out of yarn and need to find more of what I was using
Meant overlay mosaic crochet LOL--
I finally knit a sweater vest (it felt unintimidating compared to a swear, but it was actually harder than the cardigan I'm doing now!
You have an excellent eye for popping stiches and color blends!!
(And the teacher, and the pattern supplier….)
I love ❤❤❤this episode. So real. You inspire and teach and share. Just love your work.
You’re adorable. Your enthusiasm is contagious.
Can’t wait to se you finish your sweater. The colors are lovely.
Good luck.
I have never though about making myself a sweater! I make them for others! ❤❤❤
I'll be trying that next time.😊
The loose neck line seems like the 80’s cut sweatshirts with a tank top. I’m digging it! Footloose vibes but beautiful. The colors are magnificent.
I am too excited! It looks soo beautiful Toni!!! 💗🫶💐🙌
Girl, what can't you do? You are totally capable of making that sweater!!!
You go girl, I learned without a pattern. Now I am learning from a professional.
I am in love with the neckline of your sweater. And those colors are just gorgeous. ❤
I'm so glad that neckline turned out ok. I was *stressing*! Happy you like it as well :-)
Oh Toni your sweater is so beautiful!
39:55 Amen!
Hey Sister, I love your professional way of showing that we all have this happen. I love your style.
Relatable as hell lol 😂 love your videos and listening to that soothing voice while I crochet ❤️❤️❤️
this was amazing to watch! my favorite bit - "I felt like a wizard."
LOVED your soapbox speech! What you said would be good for any and all garment designers!
