      @@christian_urocar I’m not entirely sure quite yet, I just got it about a couple weeks ago and on the 16th I’m getting my fluids replaced and engine serviced and looked into, it drives and doesn’t show any signs of issues, I was informed the ims was replaced. Once I get to that point I’ll know if there is any issues and if not then solid :) mainly cosmetics though, needs new paint, window regulators which I know cost quite a lot to get replaced, and some interior things like seats and carpet

      @@PattrickNM well if it was done your good, just always let it warm up before driving off , ease the motor into higher revs during your drives , don’t be afraid to rev it up from time to time , these engines don’t last driving like miss Daisy . It’s crazy how many of these cars have window regulator problems , seats and interior lol , but motor , tranny , suspension and brakes , well you got a Porsche and they are robust took my last one up to 150k and it was still running awesome when I sold it , and yes I regret it! As someone who works in financial services and is car mad, this channel is excellent viewing. With the future blueprint of cars moving to hybrid/fully electronic, I would like to see a focus on naturally aspirated cars and the ones to look out for from a modern classic perspective. Investment cars like w204 C63 AMG or E46 M3 are great examples. Other examples that I have tipped on are Ferrari 550 V12 and Ferrari F430 manual. Thanks very much.

      If you’re looking for good data, I’d also check out the graphs available on Bring a Trailer. It’s extremely detailed when it comes to valuation not just on the model, but sub model, condition, etc.
      Your sense on the 550 especially is strong. Despite a fairly significant rise in value, it’s still a bargain compared to where it’s headed. The 430 6 speed is also a great choice-extremely reliable for a Ferrari, which has a major impact on the market. The only thing hurting it is somewhat divisive appearance. Additionally, the added value of the 6 speed has already kind of asserted itself at this stage. For my money though, I’d go with the 550 maranello. Front engine v12 with a gated 6 speed in a drop dead gorgeous shell? Hell, I’m probably stupid for writing this if I ever hope to own one, lol! The AMG you mention is a “good” investment, but with an auto only and an engine that is common across other AMG models of the era, the upside is smaller, though it still certainly exists.

      The Turbo prices behaved weirdly some about 5 years ago. The prices went down quite quickly without any other apparent reason that the turbos had to be renewed and the rear spoiler is often malfunctioning. But honestly the Turbo has the Metzger and thus is even more car for the money than the Carrera. The Turbos have collected typically a lot more miles than the GT3s and I suppose the eventual engine overhaul is bringing the prices down. The Carrera is a lof of car for the money. The Turbo is even more performance for the money. The Turbo is of the order of +100 hp and significantly tested engine with racing pedigree whereas the Carrera engines were designed mostly for ease of production.
      Recent years you could get a 996 Turbo at 30 000 USD. One thing that lowers the prices is that especially the US cars are often equipped with Tiptronic. Manuals always keep their prices better and in the case of Turbos quite a lot better. Then again, The Tip was a good automatic gearbox of its time. You could argue that the Carrera 4S is more worth money than the Turbo these days, and frankly, it does not make sense. The Turbo is a better car, hands down, but maintenance is certainly more expensive.

    I think there are two reasons why prices have increased:
    1. The pricing hit rock bottom last year mainly due to the fact that they were considered a massive letdown from the previous generation 993, basically a transition from water cooled to air cool and the front light design in both 996.1 and 996.2 models.
    2. The supply has massively decreased, with more models showing up with lower mileage. So if supply holds steady, then pricing will increase.

      im not so sure. these are the more affordable 911s and I'd guess that has a lot to do with the fact that they've increased so much. depending on who's buying these cars, then yeah, they may sell their newer 911 and keep the old ones hah. there's not much supply so cynical me thinks with all the money sloshing around it could be speculators. wouldn't be surprised if we see bullshit prices soon, which may only be bullshit relative to normal cars and not if we consider air cooled

    I paid $28,000 for my 996 with 32,000 miles in 2018. Yesterday the local Porsche dealer gave me an appraisal for $23,000 (now with 58,000 miles). I had taken the car in for a 4-wheel alignment and he offered to appraise the car. I don't think the dealer appraisal is offensive, but I think I could sell the car (which has the IMS Solution and other maintenance) for about the same as I paid for it.

    Great video as always. However, if memory serves me correctly, for 996 there were Carrera, Carrera 4, and Carrera 4S but unlike 993 or 997 I don’t think there was a (2WD) Carrera S model, although there was a X50 tuning package. Some people mistakenly enlist their car in the used market as Carrera S when in fact it is a Carrera Tiptronic S; I speculate this may be throwing off some of your detailed analysis, such as the lack of pricing difference between Manual and Auto, although not impacting the global analysis.

    I'm not a Porsche guy but the takeaway for me is new Porsche prices are ridiculously high and so naturally the younger guys are trying to slip into the prestige game with older models. I think it's a decent strategy. The people they are trying to impress (women primarily), are probably not very savvy on Porsches and so they all look the same to them. I'm not into rehabbing cars as it's often uneconomical but the used Porsche prices can kind of of make it work.

    Be very careful about what it really means when hearing a car value is going up now (June 2021). All used cars are going up due to virus winding down and pent up demand. Dealers are desperate to get any used cars due t the demand. Part of that demand is because new cars are in shorter supply due to shortage of electronic chips as a result of the virus hampering production. I suspect once the supply goes up, the prices on used cars will retract.
    The increase in value of any car is likely more as a result of that supply and demand than a big increase in collector value or desirability.

    No idea why the 996 have shot up in price, I bought a 2002 c4 with 63k miles in 2014 for 17500 guy was asking 18000 they where hated and you could of bought a regular 911 for under 10 back then. Until someone asked if I was selling mine recently I found out about the prices of theses 996. I'm guessing Magnus Walker made them cool or something lol

    Was there ever a 996.1 C2S - I dont think so. Was there ever 996.2 C2S - I doubt it. The S was only available in 996.2 C4S.
    If so the comparison of 4wd and 2wd gets distorted a bit as well as S vs. base model gets distorted - quite a bit actually.
    The C4S was basically the Turbo car with the Carrera engine. It’s got better brakes and stiffer suspension, wider track.
    Nevertheless, as a 996 owner it was enjoyable and satisfying to notice how well the car is doing nowadays.
    I love my car. It is a dead man’s car so it is not for sale unless my kids decide so after Im gone. The best ones are not for sale!

      Sometimes people call the 996 with X51 a "S". In my opinion wrong since there only i one "S" and thats the "4S".

    • @Apexjuha
      @Apexjuha 3 роки тому

      @@amanite5845 Funny, I just installed the X51 extra oil pump and sump to my 1998 C2. X51 was an option pack, with bigger throttle body, aluminium manifold and plenum, extra scavenge pump in the 4-6 head and an enhanced sump tray. It was a pack for track. I think it also had stiffer springs with a lower ride height, but not the M030 sports springs but stiffer. It also had a modified mapping which gave it about +25 hp. Was it an ”S”. I think the X51 was a bit more racier mod than the later esses were. And it was never offered with the wider body. X51s were not sold in big numbers but IMO an X51 pack will raise the present value of the car about 3000-4000 USD/Eur. And actually I think it is worth the money. Otherwise I would not have added the mods myself. Besides the extra (ECU mod) power it gives more reliability due to the oil circuit mods. But anyhow the X51 was not analyzed here. Actually I think X51 was basically the Cup-car mods.

    • @Apexjuha
      @Apexjuha 3 роки тому

      @@fourwheeltrader Also the ”Anniversary” is a clear outlier. They are easily worth 10 000 USD/Eur more than the regular car. Actually, IMO, compared to substance, the Anniversaries are clearly overprised. Good cars though, better than regular but not like +25-30% in worth, substance-wise more like 10-15%. Part reason is the low manufacturing numbers.

I too have had two 996s bought from new and still have my GT3, I know it has a different engine, but I drove the Carrera everyday and put over 12k miles a year. These cars aren’t perfect as many have been a abused but a good example with proper maintenance and an updated RMS and IMS bearing are as bulletproof as you can get for an approximately 20 year old sports car. If you really want to talk about weak points in engines take a look at a Ferrari 360 and the things that can go wrong for big bucks but on a maintained car will be fine. I’d be more worried on a 10 year old ferrari waiting for the Dual clutch transmission to eat it’s sensors than I would on a cared for 996 Carrera with the latest updates.
