Listening to these interviews really makes me appreciate my parents. They are far from perfect but they always stuck by me and loved me. Even when i didnt believe they did. Im 32 now and im a productive hard working citizen. And i have more blessings than i can count. Thanks mom and pops for not letting the streets take me. That could have easily been me.
My folks were and are fucked up, but aren't genuinely bad people. It definitely fucks your path up though. I'm 27 and just getting my shit together and I know my life was remotely as bad as folks like this.

You can hear from his tone of voice that he's still a grown lost child. Thats why parenting is such a huge responsibility. These people are just lonely with no family.
Hi Sergio, I'm currently a commissioned city cop... I've met many gang members in my 15 years of law enforcement and had both positive and negative experiences. Most of my interactions are positive as there's mutual respect given from both sides. That being said I want to encourage you by saying tomorrow is a new day brother. Your testimony was very inspiring and real. Much respect for putting yourself out there. Also, identity is a real thing... You mentioned your gang is all you got. While this may be true at the moment, new relationships await you if you're willing to get out of your comfort zone and work towards them. The biggest life lesson I've learned in my law enforcement career is to not identify as a cop. Go to church and build relationships outside of my gang. Many cops fall into the trap of "family" or "us versus them". We've all seen terrible examples of how that kind of mentality affects officers through bad conduct. I've proactively decided to serve my community without this mindset. All this being said, I am no more or less valuable than you no matter what mistakes we've both made in the past. The only thing that matters is what we do with tomorrow. Do we serve others... Or do we serve ourselves... I'm praying for you and your sobriety. Take care and God bless.
Hats off to you Sir. Keep being just the way you are. I have a lot of respect for cops like yourself. We definitely need more of you out there advocating instead of harassing, protecting instead of neglecting.
The best advice you could possibly give. Go to church and become family with people who are nothing like you but everything like each other because of Jesus. True family.
A guy I grew up with ended up doing 16 years on drug charges (yeah he was a big dealer but it's still fucking drugs) and the last time I talked to him, he was saying how fucked up it was to watch killers and child molesters come and go while he's still there for fucking drugs. It's a fucked up system.

He's still as vulnerable as a 13 year old boy now in an intelligent man's body and this made my eyes tear up. What he ran away from is what what his life became. You can see he has a beautiful soul in there and that he is smart and disciplined by the way he thinks before speaking and by the work he puts into his physique. My wish for you Sergio is peace and healing and that you have the help to do the work you need to be there for your baby throughout his life. Bless you
I just got out of jail myself and in skid row. My son passed away this April and life ain't the same for me. Stay up Sergio hope to see you around homie.
I used to be a CO back in the day and can honestly say guys locked up in the prison system that have done a lot of time or served time in the SHU do suffer from PTSD. Watching this guy talk I can see he has it by his mannerisms. When I first started the best advice I had was given to me by an older CO. He said "your not a judge and your not a prosecutor, your job is to enforce the rules and be fair and don't let your feelings cloud your judgment, if you can do that you won't have a problem". Best advice ever given and because of that other than a few knuckleheads I was pretty solid by inmate standards and actually got along with most of them. As for the name, I don't want any asshole CO's giving me static. Just speaking facts and walk the streets not having too look over my shoulder for being a prick like most CO's, Wardens, Lt's and even Asstant Wardens who dont even walk the yard. Most just sit their fat asses in their offices all day and collect a paycheck.
I know they've had a warden on here, but it'd be dope to get some CO stories/perspectives. My little brother is one and I can tell there is a lot of stuff on his mind and pent up aggression and frustration.
Thankfully the only time I've been to jail was for a house arrest violation. Thirty days was plenty. Almost all you do in jail is watch everyone else, especially when you're in a pod with sixty guys like I was. We had a CO in our pod at all times, each doing 12 hours shifts. We had our favorites and the ones we hated. It's a thankless job, being a CO. And more than half the COs I observed seemed like there was something always smoldering under their guarded demeanor. Don't know how anybody could do that job. But I notice you stated you "used to be one." You've probably got some stories to tell.
@@apeshitclothing Right, I worked in a prison for 9 years and what they don't tell you is, its almost like serving time, you're constantly checking your surroundings and feeling the temp of the room. His whole demeanor changed when his son was mentioned💔 As tough as one might portray themselves to be, there’s usually one thing that can bring a grown man to his knees.... his child/children 💯
@@bobbyschaffer1872 Dude, you have micro pennies taken out that's routed to caring for children. Calm down. If you're going to live here, you pay taxes like everywhere else in the world.
I wish people with an alcohol addiction would refrain from having kids. I lived with one parent like that at home, and this unrealiable parent managed to simultaneously screw up us children and the whole family. I am left with trust issues, people often scare me and my only goal is to live a decent life, supporting myself as best as I can, staying the hell off drugs and above all to never be what my parent was to anyone. I don’t want anybody to have to heal from me.
Well hearing his life story its nothing but pain and this is probably the first time hes ever really got to tell anyone. That and the drugs have fucked his ability to articulate thoughts properly
this is prob my favorite interview on the Chanel. this dude is so open and gentle, he really challenges the expectation of what someone who did over 15 years would be like. thanks for sharing his story
@@bobbyschaffer1872 Actually in prison you're more likely to get stabbed and killed by your own race than any other, that goes for everybody. There's a lot of politics, stabbing a member from another race means a race war where there are several casualties and its just bad for business on everyone's side. Your own do you in, no reprocutions.
I read this comment right before he said his whole little stabbing here and there thing, making it that much more hilarious. Many heartfelt thank yous. LOL
This guy has a lot of good in him, he's a thinker and he shows compassion. Imagine getting hold of him at 5 and giving him the opportunity to succeed in whatever he became. I dont condone what he does but Ill never judge him.
I hope he and his baby mom gets clean and get some stability and get their baby back. Break the cycle Sergio. Life is hard. Growing up in Chicago I was only a few choices away from drugs, gangs, and prostitution. Looking back I realize how fortunate I am. His story makes me sad. Don't give up Sergio.
Yes, if a miracle was to happen and they both got clean, got jobs and got their shit together I'd love them to raise their child. But life is tough and if they don't really get their shit together and they still get to raise their child, the child has a good chance to follow right in his footsteps. I hope the very best for all of them and there are always 2nd, 3rd and 4th chances. He's done his time and he isn't stupid, so he has a chance to get his life straightened out. But that ain't easy, those drugs don't let go easily.
Videos of people in his situation and similar have taught me to REALLY consider whether I want to be a parent or not, so that my shortcomings don't ruin another person's entire life.
If you choose yourself first over your kid, than ya, it’s hard putting what you child needs first, over and over and over again but the love and pride you feel for your kids is so big it’s a bit frightening. If something can make you do better it’s your love for your child. In fact, I don’t think people really feel real love until they have a child. Being a parent helps us care about the future of everything important on the planet too, so they can have a better life as well. If you only have shortcomings you’ll do great cause we all have some of those.
Of all the interviews i've watched on this channel, watching this guy is hard. I see him reflect on what he's said, after almost every sentence, and you can see his regret. He made me the saddest, for the choices he made, and for how life turned out for him. Just alot of regret
@@luismangiaterra1031 Yes and no. Depends on what neighborhood you are raised in and if your parents watch over you. Saw one sad news article where 2 friends refused to join the local gang so they were murdered. They were around 15.
@@luismangiaterra1031 not trying to rationalize a thing. The dead boy's father said his son went into a 7/11 and the gang went in and killed them there. I have been addicted to heroin for 18 years, I am 35 and have the exact same/ but own story as everyone else on these SWU episodes. Having parents that are alcoholic/drug addicts, being abused as children, not having the emotional support/love that is supposed to be given really sets the tone for the rest of the adult life. Feeling abandoned, isolated, and unwanted as a child and early teen causes an internal battle that can only medicated with 2 things and that is drugs and violence. In my personal experience every single person I have met on the street, in rehabs, psych wards, hospitals, jails and detoxes, it all traces back to that very simple question of "how was your childhood?"
For a person who dropped out of school, he is very well-spoken. He seems like a smart guy. He would have made a good business owner (if he would have taken a different path in life) and his employees would have become his family. I think he would have gotten a lot of satisfaction being able to take care of, and help them.
In my experience, people that go through the system learn how to speak well and their vocabulary grows due to the legal jargon in court cases. Gotta adapt to understand what the system is saying about your future.
If you ever want to stare at regret in the face see this interview. Sad that so many people don't even have a chance for a better life. I wish this guy will find his way to a better tomorrow and see his son grow up.
I think one of the more important parts of this interview is around 19:50 when he says "I wouldn't trade this for anything", then mentions that it's either Skid Row or prison. These are literally the only two things he knows, the only two places that have ever been a home to him. In reality, i'm sure he'd trade all of it for an hour in any one of our lives. Deeply, profoundly sad. God bless you Sergio. He will forgive you if you ask him
It's so sad that he can't even conceive of anything beyond skid row or prison. Unfortunately I don't think he'll escape that life with still being on drugs, he's definitely intelligent but he wasn't given a good hand in life. Two alcoholic parents? God doesn't give a shit about us. If god exists then he is malevolent.

I had no idea that he was going through tough times back then emotionally let alone physically. Anyways if he reads this post stay strong my brother and don't give up on yourself. This has to be one of my favorite interviews... Not only can you hear the sincerity in his voice but you can see it. It's not really a choice. The man known as "The Ice Man" is one of the stories I find most fascinating. He was also a product of his environment and ended up killing for a living, although he is incredibly likeable.
@CALICOTV301 You all had loving homes? Maybe we have different ideas of what that means. This guy mentioned growing up in a "normal home", yet both of his parents were alcoholics. There is much data to support the fact that children are greatly affected by not having their needs met, both physically and emotionally. And no, that doesn't simply mean being told that are loved. That's a simplistic view. Most children who have their needs met will not seek out another family figure like a gang. Also, big money doesn't look attractive to everyone. Often times, it's the culture of the environment which guides that sort of thinking. Maybe that's the type of area you grew up in, but it's not the norm.
@Gäs Yes he did. I'm just pointing out the fact that many people are products of their environment. I'm not saying he couldn't have chosen differently. He could have. I'm just saying it is more common for someone to choose that lifestyle after having been raised around it.

Alcoholic parents, no proper attention, spending late teens and whole of the 20s in prison, having no decent option to survive, far from his child - he's actually been through a lot. I feel really bad for him. May he be able to live a peaceful life someday soon.
Some how some way this man could get it together. This is his chance to turn his life around for this child. Be strong and get it together! This baby needs you!
He seems very thoughtful, he's aware of the things he's done wrong. Finding a different path to live a life that doesn't involve drugs or criminality is going to be hard. Some sort of mentor programme with men who have been interviewed on here who have left gang life could be helpful.
He knows that he is incapable of raising a child. He regrets leaving his baby but understands that he has nothing to offer that child. He can’t function in society and he’s a dangerous man, just a matter of time before he’s back in jail.
I watch him and honestly he doesn’t seem like what his life is now. He just seems...better than that, capable of more, intelligent. I honestly think he could have a great future whenever he decides to believe in himself and decide he wants more. Wishing him all the very best.

Damn, you guys need more officers like you in your country, hell our country needs you too. ✌ from India.
Hats off to you Sir. Keep being just the way you are. I have a lot of respect for cops like yourself. We definitely need more of you out there advocating instead of harassing, protecting instead of neglecting.

His child is doing perfectly fine

U good bro???
I hope you're doing good and that life is kinder to you ❤

@Natalie e when we have choices, we make decisions and then we have to live with the consequences.
This has to be one of my favorite interviews... Not only can you hear the sincerity in his voice but you can see it. I like when he would sit there and stare blankly reflecting on everything he's been through. He's done some bad but you have put yourself in his shoes if you were in that same position what you do? It's not really a choice. Sergio has lived more life than people twice even three times age and to hear how humble and appreciative he is to live on skid row has literally restored my faith in humanity. In my eyes... He's not criminal, a monster, or a 'bad person' he's real and that's just not something you come across or see too often in people anymore. Respect 💯
“3 steps this way and 9 steps that way.. man Idk whatever” He knew exactly, exactly...
When?
When you have a history you have to be careful what you say.....am sure he didn't sign an imunity deal like they do on TV......SHIT can come back to you if you aren't careful bro....
That’s exactly what I was thinking, he would have been counting those steps every single day
yea i noticed that too.
Damn, you can tell he's exhausted

Haha I felt like a dickhead about to write the same comment, but I'm glad other people noticed that. Besides the stuff on his scalp which is just not for me, the rest of his tattoos look pretty fucking good.
Latinos tend to have some of the nicest prison ink. A lot of the time it's Inca and/or Aztec themed and is so intricate and looks so good you'd never think it was done in prison.
I really appreciate what you do and sharing this with the world. In a strange way this helps people. It would be interesting if you could do a 6 month follow-up to see how Sergio is doing.
I can't help but imagine what he would have been like if he had grown up in a loving home.
Somewhat the same. Trust me. I can see it in him. He is a violent lion hearted protective person within. Although if he grew up differently he may have used it in a different way
@@yoiceman8034 That's what I'm saying. Unless he is a born psychopath, which doesn't seem to be the case, he most likely would have led a very different life. 💔

@@VioletJoy have a lovely day. Wish you the best of healing
Anytime I watch one of these interviews, not only do I have heart for the men and women interviewed but the support and love from the comments reminds me that there are more good people in the world, people who care and who have big hearts for all people.
Gives me more hope than you can imagine, bless 🙏
You can see him reflecting as he’s telling his story. It’s gut wrenching to know his newborn baby is in the system. All the stories we hear on this channel about kids in the system, it’s disheartening to think that sweet little baby boy statistically, won’t have a chance at a healthy and happy life. That’s tough to think about. ✌🏼
It would be gut wrenching to think about the poor kid's future if this guy had custody...
I hope Sergio finds his peace & happiness. I’m Mexican raised in Denver’s 5 Points and Jamaica Queens and lived in L.A. for a short while. I got to meet individuals just like him in my pursuit of self knowledge of my culture. I never judged young Brown, Black and Asian brothers I met living that life and I loved the conversations I would have with them when they heard me speak and realized I wasn’t from L.A. Had some good conversations and learned a lot from them as well. Most of them were kind to me. Thank You Boyle Heights for the education.

He's not use to literally anybody asking questions concerning him. He's getting asked simple questions abt his past and how he feels, and it looks like he's hitting the wall each time
Astute observation
True… he’s also making sure he don’t say nothing that will get him hit later. When you experience sht like that, you tuck it way back and make sure ya don’t think about it anymore.. so it takes time to recall it correctly.
When he said he was waiting for the bell to ring. “I’m tired I’m just going looking back like …..it’s never taken this long “ Lmaooo it was then I knew Sergio did not want this life. Damn man. Watching these make me really reflect An just be grateful for everything around me.

My childhood was normal. My parents were alcoholics. I could stay out and they didn't care. Or, they were to drunk to care. I got arrested for having a gun at 15, and attempted murder three weeks later.

It shouldn't be ok that it was normal for him.

He seems very thoughtful, he's aware of the things he's done wrong. Finding a different path to live a life that doesn't involve drugs or criminality is going to be hard. Some sort of mentor programme with men who have been interviewed on here who have left gang life could be helpful.
