Over 5 years ago I saw this presentation and have watched it semi-regularly as I returned to college to complete my undergrad. This year I was accepted to medical school. This video is gold.
This was the most encouraging out-pour of advice, information, and guidance I've ever received regarding pre medicine. Finally, a leader who has been there, and has proven that an un-straight & narrow path to medicine, can truly be a reality. Thank you so much! I'm going to post my name with the M.D. suffix on my wall right away!
This is amazing advice i actually just e-mailed my anatomy professor he inspired me soo much!! Everyone out there who is struggling with your pre-med dream you are truly not alone on this journey, no one is perfect and we are all here on the same journey going through the same things!
exactly, no one is perfect not even doctors! everyone deserves a second chance to show that they truly are capable of doing whatever they want to do, you are just a downer and your not being realistic either if you think everyone is perfect, we're not all cookie cutters here!
NOT TRUE AT ALL. You have a very narrow, limited, static view of achievement. I went from a high school dropout at 16 to graduating as valedictorian from my college class with the 3 highest distinctions ( Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa and the Honors College ). It took me 10 years to achieve this. If I would have listened to the naysayers like you when I dropped out that I wouldn't amount to anything I would not have achieved what I have. YOU ARE COMPLETELY WRONG!!!
I know this was 2 years ago but go after your dreams. Read my comment to the naysayer below. If I can be of help let me know. If you want to be a doctor you will no matter how long it takes. I guarantee it. I am proof of this.
That is why you will NEVER be a doctor! I will NEVER let anyone tell me I can't live me dream! It i need higher GPA, I will work harder, if I need a higher MCAT score I will study harder! This is MY dream! You want to shit on others dreams, go somewhere else, it is not needed here!
Hey Sine. Your comment is really inspiring. I am 27 at the moment and I really want to study biology next year. I didnt in the past due to parental pressures but then at 24 started volunteering in every environmental NGO, moved countries (because in my country Greece there is the economic crisis which wouldn't allow me to work and study) and plan to study next year. Even thugh I ve been through moves, volunteered in unknown fields, have done certified science courses and will work as a freelancer to cover my bills I still feel very insecure in front of those 17 year olds that will be in the same BSc as me... I feel I ll be too old... Any words of encouragement?
Thank you so much. I did exceptionally well in university year one and two, then failed, did poorly, or withdrew in 3rd year due to trying to take care of a sick spouse and not wanting to 'fall behind'. I share the pathway with the 'real example student' you used to illustrate, and that story has inspired me to keep working at it. I will be applying this spring. It gives me hope. Thank you.
Thank you so much for uploading this presentation. It was so inspiring! I've seen so many pre med videos where it seems like going to med school is impossible but this video made me realize that I can do if I have the passion behind it. I am a soon to be college freshman bio pre med major. My parents are not doctors nor do I personally know any. Thank you so much for inspiring me to follow my dream. You truly touched my heart.
asta que encontré a mi doctor marco x fabor quiero saber de husted xq yame ala clínica y no me dieron razón de husted mande me un texto x fabor gracias
Thank you so much, sir. I am currently a Las Vegas resident volunteering at one of the best hospitals with a 4.0 GPA. There will be a medical school opening in 2017. I needed this. My parents do not understand the rigors. My father thinks my goal is lofty but I'm certain. I study my ass off and I am determined to gain acceptance into medical school.
So, nobody hits on this... What about children? They obviously affect the time that can be given to studies, so does the application review committee take that into consideration?
Another pitfall to avoid is to really believe that if "you do it all correctly, you WILL get in". You still may not. Point is, and this is a very old saying but true: "hope for the best but prepare for the worst, meaning have a back-up plan. One horrible lie told to countless children is "you can be anything you want to be" whereas the more accurate--and truth, is that you are totally free to COMPETE to be anything you want to be. Saying they can be anything they want to be is a joke; imagine telling a child "you CAN be a world class sprinter--all it takes is "wanting" to be that fast. What a joke.
Yeah Tim, I never meant to imply it was a waste of time to forge ahead on merit, in fact I do believe, in the long run--and even short run, merit, as they say IS i'ts own reward. I was just commenting on "how things work" among the other America--where blood and not merit, get it done. The people who still want England--the royals--to be ahead of you and I, as a birth right.
Yeah, although cultural Anthropologists might point out, that this is an ancient truth, that pertains to all societies, and in fall fields. "Special interest groups" large and small, are not a new concept.
All that means is go and compete, don't be afraid, don't sell yourself short. I feel it needs to be told, you can be anything you want to be.. that is motivation, it may not get you in, butdefintely put you on the porch
hii. everyone. I'm from india done with MBBS. I'm curious to know about medical education in USA. what is pre med?? is it compulsory after 12th?? duration of it?? how does pre med will help the medicine course?? duration of the medicine?? how much will I get paid if I start working in USA after MBBS (undergraduate in medicine)
hi I am a pre med student and pre med is not a degree. basically after high school, you take classes that will prepare you for the MCAT and also there are certain classes like 1 year of biology, one year of inorganic chemistry, 1 year of organic chemistry , 1 year of physics and such..also lot of volunteer work, extracurricular activities, clinical exposure and such.. you can do your Bachelor's degree in any major, from history to English whatever you like but do need to take those pre requisite courses i mentioned before. You take the MCAT and so on.. there are some special programs where students are accepted straight out of high school but not too many such programs. but it will probably be somewhat different for you since you have a MBBS..
Thank u very much :) what are the pre requisites for a mbbs student to get post graduation in us/ canada?? What payment will I get after mbbs if I work ?? Around?? Thanks again.
I don't get the round of applause... If you want something sometimes you must do whatever it takes to get that something and you should not be congratulated for it!

Awesome...Dr. Cole
Did he just say that about racking up debt?

Jmichael Isbell if you have high gpa/high mcat and decent extracurriculars, and apply to many schools, you will no doubt get interviews at least.
