Never overfly the target twice and never relax over enemy territory! And don’t ever let me see you skip like a rock over a pond when landing ever again! Next time you go around. You hear me, flyboy!?
Nice work getting those eggs off and expediting that 190. Now the gun camera film shows you need some target practice, but you fly well enough. Go get some rest.

    1. Crazy to see an Australian overflying my hometown Krefeld (well virtually & time-warped) in an American aircraft! :D
    2. Thought IL-2 spelled "München Gladbach" wrong, because today it is written "Mönchengladbach"... until Wikipedia told me that up to 1950! it was "München Gladbach" before it got renamed to stop people confusing it as a suburb of München (Munich) in Bavaria, about 7hrs car ride SouthEast.

    Couple of points of interest:
In the '38, one tap on the 'flaps down' key will send them straight to 50%, which I noticed early on since it's such a help to me, being disabled with just one hand working. Half flaps right away with just one tap eases my workload, and I suspect will yours too. You can concentrate on flying the airplane more, and for me, I can keep my one working hand on the stick. For me, simply setting up a bit longer final to get those last 50% flaps down, as well as tuning the airspeed as needed works well. In that line, I like the P-51 even better for its setup, applying 10 degrees of flap with each tap, so I have minimal distraction in deploying full flaps on landing. Needless to say, owing to my disability, much as I'd like to fly 109s, I find their ungodly slow flap deployment means an absurdly long final, so I don't often fly them.
You bounced on the landing several times because you let the plane enter a vertical pilot-induced oscillation. After a bounce, the thing to do is stabilize your pitch slightly nose up, sit on your hands, and let the airspeed drop so the airplane will settle. If you're running out of runway, remember there's no shame in simply applying full power and raising the gear for a go-around; that shows good judgement over impulsivity. In my 20 years of flying professionally IRL I never heard anyone criticize my decision to reject a botched approach and try again with a better controlled one...and yes, over those years I had my share of go-arounds after a too-fast approach.
Last, I also noticed you were _decreasing_ the RPMs on your approach, which decreases propeller drag, the last thing you want to do when trying to lose speed. Full RPMs and chopping the power is what's wanted here. BTW, an aggressive forward slip is also good for losing speed fast by presenting all that physical drag to the relative wind. Just about any aircraft can safely perform a strong forward slip, so I recommend plenty of practice and pattern work to make it second nature.
That was a very instructional and useful recording, thank you!

      @@dcbadger2 well thank you!
I've enjoyed instructing all along, first as a ground instructor and CFI and later as a designated company instructor. I picked up early on that since I so appreciate the ability to pass knowledge along, I'm not just thinking about _giving,_ but am always just as ready to _take_ instruction wherever and whenever I have the opportunity to learn something new.
Let's see if that mindset works to make me a better combat pilot since flying on the PC is about the only option I have in aviation these days. Honestly, I'm pretty mediocre right now, but it's an axiom for me that we're always learning if we're doing it right and I certainly love picking up new helpful info from any available source.

@@mu2freighter Lets not forget the most important part in landing. slow down before you have to chop power and side slip and work on a more standard approach, because once you get the speeds down the p38 lands its self and stops on a dime compared to the tail draggers.

Great video Magz, those markers really help us follow the action bettee, couldn't help but noticing you were decreasing the RPMs on the approach, standard procedure is to set them to full RPM as decreasing the RPMs reduces the drag and this way they are also all set in case you have to do a go around. The original name of the city was Gladbach, which is even today often applied to the town. To distinguish the town from another town of the same name (the present Bergisch Gladbach), it took the name München-Gladbach in 1888. Between 1933 and 1950 it was written München Gladbach (short: M. Gladbach), without hyphen. This spelling could mislead people to think that Gladbach was a borough of Munich (München in German), and consequently the name was changed to Mönchen-Gladbach in 1950 and Mönchengladbach in 1960."

And, worse yet, American pilots - especially P-38 pilots considering it was a twin-engine heavy fighter - were criminally undertrained. If you look back at some first hand accounts, it's absurd. I remember reading one where an officer came out and asked the group of trainee pilots, "Who here wants to fly '38s?" and he volunteered. Later that day the crew chief showed him how to start up and use some of controls and he did his first solo flight. Unthinkable. I mean, you're talking with guys going into COMBAT with less than 200 hours of flight time in the aircraft. Up against both German and Japanese pilots with combat experience under their belts (...well, perhaps not many Japanese left with that in 1944, but you get my point).

"most players would have had you on that first head2head pass" Indeed, also an interesting fact to note that due to having zero stress, zero g-loading and an always 100% perfect aircraft along with in general having more combat flight hours and being able to custom tune there controls in a way that would be impossible in a real aircraft most skilled players are actually unrealistically good.
As in if you collect the statistics from a good MP server and compare them 1:1 against the statistics recorded by real world pilots even the worst pilots on an IL-2 MP server are almost twice as good as most aces that actually flew, the best players outperform the legends by a wide margin.
The irony of this is MP IL-2 on a good high skill competitive sever is actually the least accurate representation of the real world war 2 air combat that you can get. Everyone is a near perfect ace in perfect equipment with thousands to tens of thousands of hours in direct combat with knowledge of there enemies aircraft of a detail level that simply didn't exist at the time and zero stress or fear for themselves, there wing-mates or anyone else.

i always enjoyed dropping those tight formation flyers (you can get two Spits for the price of one in a 190...😅) - and got dropped often enough when flying those nice totally unpractical formations..... totally embarassing in a squad if your formation gets scattered and picked apart from a lone fighter...

You couldn't sign-up for the Air Force at the beginning of WW2 because it didn't exist until 1947.

...It was literally called the "United States Army Air Forces" from the start of America's involvement in the war up until they became their own branch in 1947. And, yes, they would use "Air Force" during that time period.

Best bet is to lightly flare it compared to other planes. The front suspension is really soft so if you flare then bring the nose down too fast, it will bounce and throw the tail into the ground. Land it flat and it tends to land best, bit like the ME-262.

In the P38 there is no need to set convergence. They all shoot straight out of the nose.

@@thomaslee1982 Surely you need to set the convergences as a 20mm round being heavier than a 0.50in round would need a different setting so that both different rounds hit the target you are aiming at.Or am I missing something here? Thanks for your reply.

@@tulyar1043 I think that's the beauty of the config. I've flown the P38 a few times now and am finding there's a few different sweet spots re: distance/angle.. i just pulled this off Wiki. Cheers.
Fighters with central guns, mounted in the fuselage or a central gondola, typically aimed them straight ahead rather than converging them. A fighter such as the German Bf 109E "Emil" model carried a combination of central and wing guns; the wing guns were converged to a point but the central guns could always be counted upon to aim directly at the target.[4]
The British Whirlwind (four 20 mm cannon) and the American P-38 Lightning (one 20 mm cannon and four .50 in), both twin-engine heavy fighters, carried the entirety of their gun armament in the nose, a configuration which concentrated the firepower at all distances, and did not require harmonisation.
