    Very interesting video, thanks. You’ve hit the nail on the head there right at the end. Experienced public charge users will have no problems, but I do long journeys infrequently and my worry is exactly as you said with Podpoint - turning up at a charger in the middle of nowhere, maybe at night, in the rain and needing to install an app, register etc while possibly with poor cell reception. The government should bring in some rules that say all chargers must be capable of being used with contactless only!

      The government has bought in new laws to improve the use of public charging including contactless payments. I don’t know when it will come into effect. A parliamentary committee has also made a recommendation to reduce the VAT on public charging from 20% to 5% in-line with home charging.

      @@agiugabenson7268 it's not bad. As more hubs open up, the load on those that exist already is reducing. Gridserve recently opened 12 chargers at Hilton Park North and 6 at Sandbach; Tesla recently opened up a big public supercharger site at Trentham just off M6 J15...all these make it less likely than ever that you'll have to queue at Stafford Ionity.

    • @moragkerr9577
      @moragkerr9577 4 місяці тому

      Why would you stop at the motorway services when the Ionitys nearby are so much faster and more convenient? I'd only had my car four months and it was my first really long road trip, but even I had the sense to avoid the motorway service stations with only the old 50 Kw Gridserves and find somewhere better close by. Which includes Stafford.
      The other place I was avoiding was Forton, for the same reason. But now Forton has been upgraded and I'll be able to go there in future. Probably won't be long before they do Stafford to, despite its not really being a priority due to the nearby Ionitys.

    It's not just the UK. I did a trip to Belgium and my plan all along was Superchargers. Pulled into the hotel in Belgium to find available EV charging and out of principle figured I'd use them.
    Electroverse card? Nope. Elli card? Nope. I tried three other cards, nope. Then out of bloodymindedness figured this was a challenge I was going to accept!
    First app, needed a Belgian address. Second app failed to complete sign up. Third app completed sign up and would then send me an authentication card, by post, to my home address in a couple of weeks.
    An hour later, I accepted defeat and the just went to the Superchargers down the road as originally planned the next morning.
    Tesla makes road trips utterly easy. I know others say the same if they stick with a single network too.
    Disparate apps are nonsense.

      On the continent, contactless payment is far less common, but almost all chargers take rfid cards as well as app. Road tripping with an Electroverse and Elli card in hand is really easy. You can virtually all the chargers without any apps at all.

    Good down to earth content. The biggest question it raises for me is, how can the charge companies business model work? Like you, I charge at home, so rarely use public chargers (3x in 2 years so far). So, if in the distant future 60% (assuming all households with off road parking) of all cars rarely need them, how can the infrastructure be supported with approx 40% of cars regularly needing them? Petrol stations would struggle at that usage level! Potentially looks like a future of petrol stations going bust, as the ICE car numbers dwindle, and charging companies going bust due to lack of use!

      Don’t know when you last used your card up here but the CPS free chargers are almost as rare as hens teeth now and even a 7kW charger will cost you 39p/kW, 50kW units are now 59p/kW and restricted to being 40 minutes plugged in before overstay charges at 40p/minute but…………. If the 50kW unit is part of a charge hub and there are unoccupied 50kW chargers available you can just move straight to one of them and start a new 40 minute charging session on a different unit. Also read the terms of parking very carefully if the chargers are in a car park - some of them you need to also pay for parking, some (like Stirling) don’t require parking fees while charging, so you fleeced for fuel and >£1 an hour to park there! Oh and most of their chargers now have a minimum use fee of £1.50 on most of their units now.

The list of chargers the Octopus card accesses is quite extensive but it will not activate the BP Pulse and sadly the growing number of Tesla chargers being made avaliable for all evs. My hope is that Tesla will dominate the ev charging market as their cost per kWh is probably the best of all the rapid DC chargers. I've used the Electroverse card at the Eden project (Mer chargers ), That's how to do it.
    I've also used the chargers at Cornwall services on the A30, but it's disappeared off the maps?!
    I've used a shell card somewhere, can't recall where.
    I've used the Mer destination chargers in Wimborne with varied success. The 50kW charger wasn't working but the newer 22kW chargers opposite the model town were. And room for wheelchairs and since then, Mer have installed 22kW and 50kW chargers in a third car park.
    I've also used the Instavolt chargers at Pimperne on the A354. First one was out of order, but the rest were working. Trust me to pull up to the only dodgy one.
    I also charge mostly at home.
    Personal experience only, but I've never seen a queue at chargers anywhere, and only seen all chargers in use at Tesco when they were free.

    The Pod Point charger at Lidl, if it is as new as you say, is totally unacceptable and daft for Pod Point as they will have to upgrade it soon. The new EV charger rules that came into force last November (2023) say that all chagers of 50kWh and over MUST accept contactless payment from 24th November 2024. Whoever thought it was a good idea to install a charger without contactless, that will have to have a contactless reader installed in less than a year is just lacking all sense. It must be more expensive to retrofit a contactless reader, rather than install the correct one now. Fools...

    Like you I don't understand why a new Rapid charger does not accept a contactless card, however I use Podpoint quite often for its destination chargers, at places such as car parks and hotels. I have the App on my phone, along with several others, Pod Point is the ONLY one that I have used in over a year, whilst the only RFID card I have needed has been for Charge Point Scotland. Normally for rapid chargers my Credit card works well.
    The size of charging bays is mostly down to the 'host' car park, not the charger supplier. You will note that the new chargers, not yet in service, at Rownhams Eastbound, have a dedicated extra large bay for those who need it.

    This video demonstrates why we are a long way from the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Can you imagine having to use these locations late at night? I don’t think you are going to feel very secure. The industry needs to focus on hybrid vehicles that will help to bridge the gap between the lack of secure fast charging and eliminating the range anxiety issue. I personally am not convinced that the current model of using lithium-ion batteries is the right path. There seems to be a mounting list of reasons not to use this technology for mobile energy

      Definitely especially the Tesla with the LFP battery is a lot slower if it's not been pre-conditioned. Took me a few confused attempts to work this out and annoyingly the Tesla navigation system doesn't include many of the charging networks. For example MFG are an excellent network but none of their sites are in the Tesla system, so you have to do an annoying workaround where you put in a Tesla SC as your destination in order to fool it into pre-heating for you. Ideally also drive for half an hour or so to warm the battery up through driving, don't try to fast charge from a cold start.

    So to sum up the EV experience then, you buy a car with a battery of a certain size but you cannot use it all. For the most part, chargers do not deliver the charging speeds stated. The range of the car varies massively depending upon weather and battery load but is rarely close to what is promised. The price of public charging and the user experience is hugely variable. Charging at home is cheaper but you have to pay for your charger and for charging losses. It is no wonder then that the value of used EV’s has taken such a pounding. Add to all of this, fast evolving technology, unrealistic new prices and virtually zero government incentives and you have the perfect sh*t storm! Great content though and I completely agree with you on how important accessibility and usability is.

I obviously make money out of EV's but I have got no interest in owning an EV myself.
    I can't understand why you can't plug them in at a public charger and just pay for it without handing over your life story and full family tree before they will let you have any electric.
    When was the last time you had to piss around like that with apps and stuff to fill up an ICE car.

    I agree that contactless is the best payment method, and it is being mandated by legislation soon. However I think using the Electroverse (or other eg Elli) rfid cards is also straightforward. It does need some education though, I think that's the biggest challenge for new EV drivers personally, gaining knowledge needed to make it easy.
    Apps are rubbish but only Tesla (for non Teslas) and Podpoint need them, no other major networks.
    Your limited charge speed at Porsche was entirely down to your car being cold. I know you put the note up about preconditioning, but I think you should have edited out the complaining as you drove away.
    More generally I think we'll have to ask ourselves whether bad charging sites matter if there are also several good sites within a few miles. Unfortunately there are quite a few legacy bad sites around and they aren’t likely to all get uprooted. It's another piece of knowledge that new drovers need; which networks and types of sites to avoid.

    • @DefinitelyNotAGuru
      @DefinitelyNotAGuru  4 місяці тому

      I don't think I should've edited out the complaining as my complaint is/was utterly valid. @DefinitelyNotAGuru your battery would have been warmed slightly by the first charge. Rapid charging heats a battery quickly. It's impossible to be sure but the fact that your charge rate at the porsche charger seemed to vary a bit (between 35 and 39kw?) implies to me it was limited by the car. Normally a charger limited session has a completely flat charge rate.
      Having said that, it's not unheard of for Ionity chargers to limit themselves to around 35kw when the chargers cooling system fails. It's possible this charger had the same fault. If I had to bet from what you showed, I'd still bet on the car.
