    Automotive engineering is about the design, manufacturing, and operation of cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other automobiles. Within automotive engineering there are a variety of sub disciplines including safety, performance, vehicle dynamics, fuel economy, cost, manufacturing, and more.
    For those who want to go into automotive engineering, note that most colleges don't offer it as a major in terms of undergrad. The most common major for people to begin with is actually mechanical engineering. Then after you get your bachelor's you either go into the workforce in the automotive industry, or pursue further education specifically in automotive engineering.
    While in school you will want to get as much exposure to the field by joining clubs like the society of automotive engineers so you can participate in various competitions. This will give you something to put on your resume and get you that hands on experience that is so valuable for your career.
    One big area of research at the moment is self driving cars. This is where you'll see much more than just mechanical engineering working on these vehicles. People from all disciplines including electrical engineers, computer engineers, materials engineers, computer scientists, and more are needed for these projects. However, there are more areas of research that are briefly mentioned in the video beyond self driving cars.

    Great video. Currently, I'm interested in the underbody of cars as these aspects of automotive engineering apply to all cars, except those that fly, perhaps. Hopefully, America's roadways will improve and allow cars to be designed for better road comfort with the least expense. There are many types of drivetrains out there, today. Everything is connect and I don't plan to neglect any part of a vehicle as each component affects and is affected by many other components. I look to see more modular design and replacement in the future. For example, replacing discharged electric car batteries with charged batteries in a manner similar to what we do with battery-powered tools, etc. Why we haven't gone to a more modular design today, I have no idea. It would be as simple as an automatic car-wash to put our cars back in order.
    Anyway, you presented a variety of automotive career fields and companies in your video. I got a better understanding of the many aspects of mechanical, electrical, and automotive engineering and plan to research these areas. I look forward to seeing (hearing) you in future videos. Thanks, Jeff

      No worries, If possible, I'd like to ask for your opinion... So I am stuck between choosing Mechanical Engineering and Architecture (I'd love to do automotive Engineering, but there are hardly any jobs in Australia)... Mechanical Engineering has a higher salary, but high prerequisites for Uni, and requires a lot of work... Architecture has lower prerequisites, but a much lower salary (average)... But I love being able to be creative, so whats your opinion, put in the extra effort for Engineering, or be more creative and do Architecture?

    • @zachstar

      It depends on what you want to do but I'd say go for mechanical engineering if you're willing to put in the work. If it's something you will enjoy, you will thank yourself later for doing that work. But if you're hesitant it might be tough to make it through.

    I don't know how common these things are in the US but in Germany at least we have programs that take about 60% of any given engineering major and about 60% of what people in business majors will take and teach them together. The idea is to have broad knowledge in both fields and to then primarily work in project management or quality management. Could you do a video on that, given of course, that you are familiar with similar programs!

There so many stuff you have to cover while studying this specific field, I'm talking about mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, data analysis, mechatronics, dianostic and so on. Now I'm so confusing about what should I do and which part of the car should be prioritized. For all of you guys out there making up your mind to take on automobile engineering, please don't, choose a specific field first, then dig hard into it. If i want to become a car designer, regarding just the appearance of the vehicle ( although i know i 'd have to take aerodynamics and safety measures into consideration ), should i study industrial design ( which will lead up to a master on automotive design ) or automotive engineering? I need to know , next year i am planning on going to college!

    • @CWSOF
      @CWSOF 5 років тому

      I REALLY HOPE IT'S NOT TOO LATE
      Going into automotive engineeing just for the appearance of the cars is craziness. I had this same issue, I wish I could be a car designer, So Industrial design was my main goal, but then, I realized that I was also really interested in understanding how cars work, besides their appearance, So for this reason I dediced to go into Mechanical engineeing (Unfortunalery there's no Automotive engineeing course avaible to me). So, answering your question: If your interest is the appearance, study industrial Design and later seach for a specific course for design of cars, because you won't have it at your normal graduation, industrial design is a general course

    I am planning on going into a trade, either automotive technician or collision repair, but my parents keep saying the traditional 4-year route. I just think about the different workplaces and think I trade would fit my desires better. But I feel like I would be a failure and what if new advancements in technology affect trade job opportunity in the automotive world. Money is not a major factor, fulfillment is key but I also want to make sure there are jobs too.

      I think you gotta go with your heart on that one. Automotive repairs are only getting more difficult, so I really think a robot will not be taking it over any time soon. Work hard and focus on whatever you choose, but going to college if you're not fully committed to it could be a big time of waste and money. Working a trade is super respectable and necessary for our society.

    I’d love to become an automotive engineer, the only thing is I’m not sure if I should go to a 2 year community college first for mechanical engineering or a tech school. I would like to learn the basics in and out of a vehicle. Just not sure what route to take?
