As an ex-television director, I gotta say, this was very well produced. Thank you for compiling all of this info on a group that I listened to growing up, but never knew anything about. Job well done.
I thought 5* were great back in the day. I remember pinching my younger brothers cassette tape so I could listen to them on my Walkman. I'm now 50, and this has brought back so many good memories. Thank you
I loved 5 Star back in the day, they were black entertainers living in the UK and that blew my mind as a kid! To see Denise still out here performing, sounding and looking amazing, it’s crazy she doesn’t have a solo deal here in the states🤷🏾♂️ I’d always wondered what became of the guys. Thanks for creating and sharing, hope to see them out here again soon❤
From 1982 through to 2004 I DJ-ed in cities all over Australia and eventually the world. 5 STAR was a group that I can honestly say "back in the day" had a very extreme cult following, especially their dance tunes. THE SLIGHTEST TOUCH dance remix was Number 1 in Sydney for many months of 1987 and has now become a Dance Floor Anthem in Australia. I took this tune to New York in 1987 when it was still hot, and it filled the dancefloors wherever I played. To this day THE SLIGHTEST TOUCH still remains in MY personal top 10 tunes of all-time. Thanks so much for creating, producing, narrating, editing and posting part I and part II of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO 5 STAR. I wish all the members of 5 STAR all the very best and I'd like to thank them for the many thousands of hours that I and others in Australia have enjoyed their music. DM
No Matter what people say…..I personally loved the group Five Star …..they where always and till this day on my playlist, during my drives from duty station to duty station, the music they made has always been a part of me, truly this is a UNSUNG group, still listening to Five Star.
As a further update Denise has released a solo album with another on the way in 2024, she is still touring. Doris has recorded several songs including a new version of System Addict. Lorraine is writing her books still, Stedman has released singles and Delroy is still producing.
I'm in my late 40s, and remember seeing a few of their music videos on TV back in the 80s. I wanted to see more from them, but TV here in the USA just wasn't showing them much. I never knew what happened to them after the first few albums. Their image was too close to the Jacksons, and they weren't promoted in the US in magazines and interviews which were huge at that time. And, without their videos in heavy rotation, there was no way they would catch on better here. I enjoyed their music whenever I heard it. Glad to know they are still a tight knit family, and while family drama happens, theirs isn't too bad actually. Well done telling their story.
This was the most comprehensive and informative documentary on Five Star I have watched so far, you did a good job, well done for shining a spotlight on these legends. I’m still a big fan and hope they do another tour in the UK.
This was a dope documentary well put together! 5 stars is still one of my favorite gps from the UK! They're definately the UK version of the Jackson Five. Their fashion n dancing reminds of Janet Jackson!
I agree the more I look at Denise Pearson who is a beautiful & classy ladi! She looks like Toni Braxton who is another beautiful classy ladi as well. They are sister's in the R & B in the Music Industry not related!❤❤❤❤
I do have to say this fact that not many people will admit. They were pioneers in the way they danced. They danced insinc with each other which lead the way for many groups that came after them.
The Jackson 5 (which 5 Star was patterned after) also danced in sync to pop music. I’m sorry, I think I understand what you’re trying to do, giving them credit for something, but there were plenty of well-known groups who danced in sync.
Thank you for those vids. You showed interviews, videos and photos I had never seen before, especially since I live in the U.S. I'm a huge Five Star fan, going back to when Luxury of Life came out when I was only 12. Even now at 50 yrs. I'm still a fan of their timeless music. They were definitely NOT promoted well at all here in the States. I actually got to meet and have lunch with Buster Pearson back in 1998 and asked him why this was and he really didn't give me a satisfying answer.🤨 But he treated me to lunch and bought me a gift and it was an overall pleasant experience. It's so incredibly sad and bizarre that Denise never got the recognition that she deserved because she truly has one THE BEST voices in the music industry...period. I will always regret not getting to see FIVE STAR perform LIVE. Thanks again for putting these videos together. I'm sure it was a lot of work and very time consuming but what you did is very much appreciated!
Hello Sephsaysso! I grew up in the 80s (graduated high school in 87) and I loved Five Star! I always felt they needed more exposure and deserved more success here in the US. I was in the NYC area, and in that area we had a very popular R&B focused radio station (98.7) and a popular dance music radio station (103.5), both stations gave a lot of airplay to Five Star's singles. I originally had their first three albums on cassette, and when I updated my collection to CDs, got the Legends 3 CD collection. Now, Five Star is on my Spotify playlists.
You did an awesome job on this video!!!! This popped up after I was watching 5 Star's "Let me be the One" video. I got to learn about the their start in music, and their career throughout. Oh, and also UK groups were really appreciated by myself and many others here in America.. So many great groups from the UK in the 80s. A great and very interesting time in music! 💃🏽💃🏽🕴🏽💃🏽🕴🏾🎵🎶🎤🎶🎤

Thank you so much for this deep dive. This was quite a nostalgia fest for me. In my early teens I was seriously (system) addicted to their music, and I lost count of the hours playing their vinyl albums and creating my own routines.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ WoW!!! ❤ Totally amazing!!!!! You did such a great job making this video. It's such a nice tribute to this wonderful and talented group. I wasn't aware that their father passed away. May he rest in peace and power. ✝️💯🙏❤️
They were a very big part of that British music scene from 80’s but once they left to the US I think that was a poor choice only because as we now know many record labels are taking advantage of the artists old and new.
I'm glad that they acknowledged the over-exposure. When they were at their biggest, they seemed to be everywhere. Even a number of their original fans got tired of it. They were also linked with Thatcher's Britain. Displays of obscene wealth, when many were struggling to put food on the table, wasn't a good look. They would come out of it better now, of course. The Slightest Touch is still one of my favourite songs of the era.
Funny how the dominant race that made money off of subjugating black people and the ruling class and showers off of stolen wealth like the ROYALS, government and elite were not called out ?? Most black people in the UK at that time were poor so it was PURE JEALOUSY. They worked hard to earn their money it was not handed to them, successful black people seem to make especially white people uncomfortable . Why is that ? Hmmmm.
Thoroughly enjoyed these videos. Shows the fickle world of pop music back in the day. Not entirely sure what they were thinking buying all those high end sports cars, but perhaps they were leased? Seemed like a nice bunch, just, like many got used and discarded, but fair play for carrying on with the rewind concerts. "Rain or shine" eh? Made some cracking pop songs with "the slightest touch" being a belter, especially the 12", and knocks anything released today out of the ball park. Great all round though, and cheers.
Great video. Respectful, non-sensationslist, with new and relevant info. I had the pleasure, just prior to Lockdown, of going out for drinks with Denise, through a musician friend of mine. She is super-lovely, quietly-spoken and very kind. Love Five star. Our answer to The Jacksons.
They will come back and reform to perform their classic hits. They can get tours easily on the 80s nostalgia circuit. We just need to wait for Del's kids to be older so he can commit to a big tour in the UK.
thank you thank you......very well done....narration, illustration....this brought me back to the 80's.....5Star, TTDA....UK was rocking good black music. Immediate follow
As a Five Star fan from the very beginning it was sad to see them change direction into the 90's and lose their audience. Denise has done some great projects outside of Five star and I've loved some of her music, but sadly she just hasn't broken through on her own and now appears to have given up on solo projects and original music in favour of touring as 5 Star. She's also formed some horrible riffing habits and doing the runs with her fingers and all that. She was sensational up until about 5 years ago, but now I cringe watching her performances. Thanks for this brilliant documentary. So well done.
Thanks for making these vids. I think 5* were always destined to be short lived because their initial fanbase was 13 year old kids who quickly out grew and them and when this sort of band tries to reinvent itself it never works. Still, they were supertalented and their lasting legacy is a collection of really good pop songs. Im surprised more of them havent been covered tbh. Thanks again!
The sad thing is that unlike the 2010s, singers and groups struggle to perform with the support of a major record label. They need the marketing and money spent for studio time. This is how the record and media industry is structured. Unless you have millions of your own cash or independent investors to sponsor you.
Thank You for revealing what happened to 5 Star, The band members went through some highs & lows, I didn't know that Buster Pearson threatened his own son Steadman Pearson by saying to him " I have a gun & I am going to shoot you " Poor Steadman.......... Steadman must have been terrified! It's the first time I have seen what Buster Pearson looks like, The Mother Delores is so beautiful ! 🌹🌹🌹🌹
Loving this one thanks for sharing very information blessed love to all knowledge is power hopefully everyone pays attention keep up the good work 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
Thank You Sephsayso for doing this video on one of my favorite groups of the 80s Five Star. This makes up for an Unsung episode that they have yet to do. I have a request: Could you please do a video on Georgio Allentini? Folks that remember him call him a Prince wannabe.
I adored 5 Star...I remember being clearly upset when they changed to the black leather vibes...they sorta ceased being 5 star. But still one of my fave groups ever. 😊
They did so much more than I remember. I remember everyone talking about how they were a Jackson 5 rip-off, but they were good anyway. I only remember one album, Silk and Steel (which I still have on vinyl), but I do remember all the other songs, which is weird because I thought they fell off after that album. I think they definitely need to do Glastonbury and revive the whole thing.
They need to reunite and push their legacy to the next level. I think a reality show of them piecing their relationships and working on a new music and ultimately a tour would do the trick. Many people who grew up with them will tune in and in this day and age of social media, they will attract a new fan base. I hope one of them sees this message and take it to heart.
Prince was right that he mentioned "slave " on his face. Meaning that an artist sign a contract under a major record label and being controlled on their money and success.
I will say this, thank goodness for y'all's father being strict the way he was because guess what? We're not hearing stories of Five Star dealing with any major substance abuse situations or anything like that that we see a lot of celebrities go through. That music industry will use you up and then toss you aside like you or nothing. Your father knew what he was doing so Bravo to him! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
This is just my opinion. Denise and Doris would have gone solo. Denise could have paired up with a baby face la Reid production, teddy Riley, or Jimmy jam. Should have changed her sound and her direction as an artist. She has an amazing voice and could be up there with someone like Toni Braxton.
You forgot to mention how everyone questioned Stedmans sexuality which wasn't as accepted at the time as it is today. He was very feminine and wore makeup
They totally were sabotaged and shadow banned. I was a huge fan. I didn't hear any more of their music anywhere after about 1989. I wish I had known they kept making music. I'm going to catch up on their music.
I loved 5 Star. Denise is an amazing singer and performer and good on her continuing to do that. Lorraine, Doris and Steadman were all manipulating the truth in some of these interviews ( tells you can spot). Certainly the UK got a bit narked with their showoff lifestyle and their father wasn't a nice man. However they made some great music and were great dancer's. I can see why the US wanted Doris to sing as she looked and sounded more like Janet Jackson, but she wasn't American. Denise always had the star quality.
I have always loved practically everything this group has ever done and Denise is absolutely a vocal Powerhouse that I have always admired and enjoyed. What a truly awesome entertaining family❤❤
They were always helluva dancers. They tried 2 change a bit n the early 90's but the music scene was leaning more towards hip hop & they never got w/ that.
I 'very really enjoyed this documentary!I didn't know the first single was "problematic ", so far I still haven't heard it ,which is why I'm still searching long and Hard for the LUXURY box-se t . I really hope that they at least treat us to surprises, like appearing as part of a Superbowl musical performance, etc .I hope that they would put all their differences aside and do at least 1 memorable contemporary rellease!
The truth of the story is that Buster there father built their own studio and wanted to produce and record the group himself He was warned by the recording company if he did not sign their new contact with the group! they would never get another radio play. He didn't sign the new contract! That was the end of 5star
As an ex-television director, I gotta say, this was very well produced. Thank you for compiling all of this info on a group that I listened to growing up, but never knew anything about. Job well done.

Many people who grew up with them will tune in and in this day and age of social media, they will attract a new fan base. I hope one of them sees this message and take it to heart.
I swear I thought that was Toni Braxton on the thumbnail
The fans want and need all 5 back together ❤❤❤❤we need to hear those songs live again
beautifully presented , best i have seen on them thank you soooo much
Wow that took me back to my teen years they all look beautiful they’ve still got it
Prince was right that he mentioned "slave " on his face. Meaning that an artist sign a contract under a major record label and being controlled on their money and success.
that’s what happened ,. record labels were not gonna let their dad control it all
1990's there was Aliyah, TLC, SWV, Jade, freestyle music was fading
I will say this, thank goodness for y'all's father being strict the way he was because guess what? We're not hearing stories of Five Star dealing with any major substance abuse situations or anything like that that we see a lot of celebrities go through. That music industry will use you up and then toss you aside like you or nothing. Your father knew what he was doing so Bravo to him! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Sounds like Denise is still holding onto the dream and the others have found other interests.
Love this beautiful family group ❤
Thank you for this. I really wondered what happened to them. Glad they got away from toxic UK Gutter Press.
They are right after let me be the one album I heard NOTHING on them I was a fan had no clue they made more music
I knew nothing about 5star. But this was a great doc. Thank you.
That was great thank you for the two part doc x
This is just my opinion. Denise and Doris would have gone solo. Denise could have paired up with a baby face la Reid production, teddy Riley, or Jimmy jam. Should have changed her sound and her direction as an artist. She has an amazing voice and could be up there with someone like Toni Braxton.
i loved their 1990 self titled album its a shame it wasn't more successful
You forgot to mention how everyone questioned Stedmans sexuality which wasn't as accepted at the time as it is today. He was very feminine and wore makeup
Thanks for this. Always been a big fan.
They totally were sabotaged and shadow banned. I was a huge fan. I didn't hear any more of their music anywhere after about 1989. I wish I had known they kept making music. I'm going to catch up on their music.
Could you do a video on Phil Fearon and galaxy & kid Creole and the coconuts ? They are 2 groups that were popular in the UK
Their dad kept the wolves away from his kids...like he was suppose 2 do. They were teenagers, he did his job.
Strong as Steel was my favorite song.
We had all the good groups going around in the music scene in the 80s I miss this time
I'm not mad at Denise....she's trying to keep that bag full. Now i just need TV One to do an Unsung on them
THANK YOU FOR. THIS! They inspired me to sing. xx
Great video....i am from the Netherlands and i was a fan from day one in the 80's. Didn't one of the sisters perforn on the Voice a few years ago?
Well done. Great insight.
Great group still listen to them.
They were always helluva dancers. They tried 2 change a bit n the early 90's but the music scene was leaning more towards hip hop & they never got w/ that.
Well done! very insightful
Smaller old school concerts in the US is popular, i wish they get on board for an 80s event. Would love it...
I love Doris, she's real funny.
Have U done a video on Junior Giscombe?
I haven’t yet. Let me see what I can find and put something together 😊
They had an amazing run and career….8 albums!phew 😅
Thanks Sephsaysso, that was brilliant!!
*Can't Wait> System Addict an my personal favourite>Rain or Shine;* still know all the lyrics;
Ain't no sin saying u were a 5☆ritte.
Denise looks a bit like Toni Braxton
The truth of the story is that Buster there father built their own studio and wanted to produce and record the group himself
He was warned by the recording company if he did not sign their new contact with the group! they would never get
another radio play. He didn't sign the new contract! That was the end of 5star
