    Yo Flem, what I love about this series is that you humanize each person you cover in this. Too much of reporting in society is just a spin that doesn't allow the person consuming the content to make their own decision on the subject. Here, you're laying stuff out for everyone and people can decide if Jamarcus was greedy and lazy or if he was completely crushed by two untimely deaths of his support system. I love this series.
    People deal with grief in different ways. I hate to be that dude speculating in comment sections, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some longer term depression that Russell was dealing with after his uncles died. That stuff is hard to deal with and I find it tough to put blame on anyone for any reaction of dealing with loss. For some it's a motivator to live your life for that person. For others, it can crumble them.
    Dude had crazy talent, some of the best talent the position's ever seen, and he got a real nice nest egg and got to the top league in his job in the world. Was he an absolute success? Nah. But I can definitely understand why.
    Great work as always, Flem.

      I agree, but I also think it's important to recognize another essential fact about Russel's pro career. Namely, that NO ONE could have succeeded with the 2007/08 Raiders. The Raiders were the absolute worst situation for him to walk into with a disinterested/unqualified coaching staff, a senile owner and an absolutely dysfunctional locker room devoid of leadership.

      @Run Gunn heyy buddy..... Just because a coaching staff is bad doesn't mean that they can't try and evaluate their players. There are 32 teams in the NFL and not all of them have great coaching staffs or everyone would be 16-0. The fact is they wanted to prove a point by giving him a blank dvd. They can't just call out a man in front of his teammates without having proving his complete lack of focus and work ethic. TRY THINKING LOGICALLY FOR ONCE PLEASE.

    • @liljackster2284

      krysala I disagree Ryan leaf went after Peyton Manning for a reason Plus that draft class while decent doesn’t come close to the value of the 2007 nfl draft and the fact that he didn’t even try and let himself get overweight pretty much sealed his fate for biggest bust of all time

    • @starkiller7165
      @starkiller7165 6 років тому +9

      krysala Leaf was compared to Peyton Manning at one point. Granted that was before the rings and the records but the Colts considered taking Leaf before they finally went with Peyton. Leaf had a decent rookie year, but he quickly went downhill. Someone who's standards were that high, and had many expectations they failed to live up to, is the biggest bust.

    • @starkiller7165
      @starkiller7165 6 років тому +5

      tim mutohfan but thats exactly what defines a "bust". Someone that failed the expectations of everyone. In my opinion Leaf failed more, as Russel had more potential after his rookie season.

      It's true. Before the 2009 season, he was on an upward swing. He showed good mobility, and had a 13TD-8INT his first starting season, capped off by kicking Gruden out of the NFL with a comeback win at Tampa Bay. After that offseason, the dude came into training camp looking like a pregnant woman, and was never the same. Lean sounds like some stupid shit, but really is no joke lol. You just cant be a professional athlete while also sippin' that crap. It has ruined many careers and lifes.

You put it all on the table. Good bad and ugly for us to see the whole picture. I've followed the NFL for over 30 years and never heard a single sliver of the info about his family. If you think losing people that close to you won't got you hard, you're a different breed. I wish as a person, they'd done something to help him with that aspect of his life. I think most QBs do. Every position needs that a little bit but QBs are the future captain of one half of your team so they need a good mentor more than right guard or a free safety would. Throwing these rookie QBs into the deep end is just a bad idea and there's a reason they didn't used to do that as much as they do now. Aaron Rodgers was probably always going to be a good QB but without spending some time behind Brett Favre does anybody think he wouldn't have extra growing pains?

    Another great video. Growing up in Louisiana, we didn’t miss a LSU game, so I remember watching Russel in college and how he had so much raw talent.(supposedly he could throw from the 50 YL through the uprights off one knee.) he could of been great, he just didn’t have a strong enough mind to unlock is potential. He was amazing as a college QB, but we all know the NFL tends to separate the men from the boys.

  • @BAbivaJr
    @BAbivaJr 7 років тому +51

    Lemme ask you this. Had the Raiders gone and drafted Megatron, who was their QB to throw to him? That’s right. At that time of the Raiders, it didn’t matter WHO they drafted. No one would’ve worked out. If JaMarcus Russell had the right work ethic, and if the Raiders had the right people in the front office that knew how to build around Russell, it could’ve/should’ve/would’ve worked out. You should try check the film when JaMarcus played against the Patriots. He tore they ass up! That’s the JaMarcus Al Davis saw. Plus, Al liked speed, yes, but he was also a man who loved the deep ball. And JaMarcus was the man he thought could bring that back for the Raiders.

    Mel Kiper did revolutionize the draft process, but once the draft became a big tv event in the 2000s he became a joke. Draft guys have to hype guys make 50 mock drafts for clicks and attention.

      he didn't revolutionize shit, this is the entirety of his Career in Wikipedia
      "Kiper said that Ernie Accorsi, general manager of the then-Baltimore Colts, encouraged him to become a draft analyst. Accorsi told him that there was a market for draft information and suggested that Kiper convert his analysis into a business.[2]
      Kiper and fellow draft analyst Todd McShay are often featured together and compare their mock drafts on ESPN programs.[3]
      Kiper co-hosts the weekend show Dari and Mel with Dari Nowkhah on ESPN Radio.[4]"

    JaMarcus Russell is a genuine inspiration to me. As weird as it is to say, his failure drives me to better myself in my goals. Because he was amazing. He was an absolutely amazing arm and athlete. He could flick a ball 50 yards like it was child’s play. And just like that…. Just like that he blew it. And he knows it too. And you can tell he regrets it. And a lot of the things he let get to him are things that I often let get to me. Fluctuation between over-confidence and no confidence at all, depression, lack of motivation and discipline (which is so hard to get over), drugs, etc. And it all inspires me to do better for myself. My talent and opportunity can be squandered and then it’s over. I won’t get it back. I won’t get another chance. And I don’t wanna be that guy. And it drives me. JaMarcus drives me. And I know that may sound like a troll or a diss, it really is not at all. I love him for it. He’s almost a hero of mine. And honestly I was really rooting for him when he tried to come back in 2013. Would’ve loved to see him get a second chance with Chicago.
    Alas, it is what it is. GOD’s will be done. I love JaMarcus Russell, and I wish him all the best.

You should do a video about qbs who got jumped to the front of their class on arm strength alone, remember Kyle Boller the cal guy who threw the bomb off one knee.

      Yeah, I remember that too during his junior year. I saw a few games of his, and he was overall good, but like you, I was never blown away...then that Notre Dame game came, and that changed everything, and apparently Al Davis decided that night that he was going to take him. Lane Kiffin wanted Megatron, and the night before the draft tried to convince al to go that way, but his mind was already made up. It also should be said, and this is taking NOTHING away from Jamarcus, he absolutely shredded ND that night, but ND was pretty overrated, with a defense that wasn't great, and LSU had three NFL receivers.
