It's great how beginner friendly this game is. I recommended it to my non-shmup-normie-friends and even they seem to understand now what the danmaku genre is all about.
Cinema had Ingmar Bergman, literature had Dostoyevsky, videogames had Shiggy Miyamoto and for a time it was good, but then time passed and this begged the question who do we have now? For videogames we can now proudly answer Boghog and NG Dev! - P.S. It was a struggle coming up with the appropriate level of hyperbole on this one but I think I managed to pull it off quite nicely in the end. P.P.S no seriously, buy this game!
The game is amazing. Im glad that this kind of quality shmups get released from time to time. So we are not dependent of cave anymore lol. My impressions are similar to yours. Gameplay is really solid, really fun. I reaaally enjoyed the roguelike mode. A concept that in papers sound like an euroshmup thing is well implemented here. And about graphics and sound, I think too both are great but they feel kinda generic or not memorable. But in general is a must for shmups fans.
A superb game, it just feels great to play. Shout out for the soundtrack, the music in this game is incredible, it really adds a huge amount to the game and is an area which often gets overlooked in reviews.
Never commented on here but JUST got my physical LE/CE (whatever they called it) in the mail the other day so I guess going back to comment here for the algorithm. Have other stuff to play atm but yeah will enjoy this once I get to it. The bullets being so nice and clear to see is nice; graphics look on point.
I commented on another video yesterday and said I did car sim racing. As a beginner at schmups it’s noticeable how similar they are to sim racing. Both need loads of focus, both need to learn paths, both need patience and precision. Love the channel.
@@TheElectricUnderground it takes a lot of practice, getting the perfect inputs, learning the foibles of a track, focus tracking twenty or more moving objects travelling at different speeds. Great community in schmups too!
Okay, I'm definitely interested with all the ways to play to appeal to people who aren't just looking to play for score. The variety and accommodations for anyone to find their fun is something I remember discussing with you before in the comments if a previous video. Will definitely pick this up!
@@TheElectricUnderground my next one is going to be Dodonpachi DOJ M2 port when it comes out later this year. All your videos convinced me to go for that next :-)
Great review. Its awesome when such a high quality, well thought out bullet hell shmup is released.Really like the continuation and stage choice being available.Reminds me of zero ranger accessibility wise. Also like the roguelite alot for exactly the reasons u mentioned here; its a refreshing alternative/ compliment to the arcade.Btw the graphics look really excellent on a big TV.Also for some reason boss 3 is the hardest boss of the whole game inho- those ships firing from behind are hell!.
Great review, just picked this up a few hours ago and am really digging it. The visuals are awesome, and the ship selection is great. Trying to figure which one I want to go for the one cc with.
My most anticipated shmup release of the year. Glad to hear that it turned out so well. Easily the best game that NGDev has released to date. Gonna get it on PC now and Switch early next year when it releases there.
@@TheElectricUnderground I'm glad you did. I honestly had no idea. I just assumed that NGDev was developing it themselves, so the jump in quality felt especially impressive to me. Either way, I hope GunVein sells well enough to convince them to continue supporting releases like this.

I already bought the game on steam and it's amazing. I especially like that it's very intense in the bullet patterns, but at the same time it's... let's say "affordable", without the need to use slowdowns like Cave did for his extreme hail of bullets. And with arcade stick it's a thousand times better! 🕹
Ghost Blade HD is pretty much the prelude to Gunvein and well worth playing (also has the same graphic artist and I believe a few other members who then worked on Gunvein).
@@TheElectricUnderground True, Ghost Blade HD is fun but the extremely simple gameplay and lack of interesting ships held it back from being one of the more interesting shmups out there, but considering it started out as a homebrew Dreamcast game meant as a tribute to arcade shmups of the late 90s the dev did a really nice job.

Great review! That's really interesting that the devs put a roque mode into the game AND I am surprised you kinda like it haha! I like to have the choice and the different options surely open up to make the game accessible to a bigger audience! You said the Roque elements here are not so random or they follow the shmup formula, can you explain this a bit?
Absolutely my friend! So the roguelike mode is not purely random, there is a random variation of how the spawns and enemies come, but still within a parameter that doesn't make the gameplay completely absurd or uneven, which can happen a lot with roguelikes. Also unlike something like enter the gungeon, the leveling elements don't cut against the main design ideas of the genre, which is shooting and dodging. I explain this more in the previous vid Japan vs Euro design, but GV's roguelike mode doesn't fall into the pits I mentioned in that vid.
Just played the game. It is indeed a good game, but i would not call a obligatory buy. The only thing that stood out for me was the player ships. Feels like the devs wanted to do a cave game sticking to that formula without taking risks because at the same time i did not see any flaw in the game. My main issue is that is a "cave" spinoff without the quality of a cave game and i Will hardly Replay it because of that. Perhaps i AM being too Harsh as reaching cave quality is a monumental task, but when i look to indie bullet hells obligatory i think in crimson Clover and blue revólver.
This looks AWESOME, homie, but, I need to practice with Dodonpatchi, first, isn't it!!!!!! I got that "ESP Ra . Den", working, too, to practice with! Two VERY hardcore oldschool entries more than enough for an old man to figure out at first hahahahahaha. ~ Cheers , ~ "the" Rev

Im an old player of shoot em ups 80's using Spectrum, Amstrad and Amiga. been gaming most me life, but only in the past year got back into the shmup genre. im on steam and xbox one. So i'm really looking forward to playing this on the Xbox. Still no sign of it on the xbox game store yet and was wondering if anyone knows when it will be in the game store? I see it in the steam store now which is great. @The Electric Underground, have you ever done a review on Bullet Hell Monday. This was me latest buy and crimson clover ex. Thx for the vids, your the one that has got me back into this genre with all the great vids, so keep them up bud. Fully appreciated.
Hey thank you for the awesome comment!!! Glad the channel has helped! I am gonna cover the ste version of Monday at some point :-) also I think the console versions will be released in a few months
Yes absolutely! This game is the perfect fit for newcomers to the genre looking to get into bullet hell :-) Boghog really went out of his way to bring in new players and add lots of systems for you.
I mean I was gonna pick it up anyway, but this rogue mode REALLY piqued my interest! Parsec47 is still my favorite shmup, but most euroish shmups I find very underwhelming. Operation STEEL is the one I've played the most from this year, but it is a bit bland bullet pattern/level design wise, and underwhelming production-wise, but still has had me surprisingly hooked. Let's see if Gunvein can top it. :)
I’m probably going to buy it, and it looks fun, but I can’t help feeling that it looks low budget, like discount SDOJ. Looks a little too clean, needs some grit.
Yeah I talk about wanting more animations and stuff with the backgrounds, but the gameplay and overall visual presentation is top notch. I don't think you ll see a bullet hell of this quality come out any time soon :-)
i really dont have a shmup brain, but after playing some sin & punishment, maybe that is the next game for me. shmups are hard, idk where im goin with this comment, its almost 4 am. This game looks fun, i bad at game edit: i think it would be cool in shmups where your character has to leave their ship or vehicles and then its more like guwange, so that way i can see the anime girl in game and shoot em with a human sized gun or somethin
Great review, Bro. I was a little worried this was just another NG Dev Team Shmup. But it's definitely not. This game looks awesome!!! I don't hate NG Dev Team or anything like that. But sometimes if you criticize even one thing, fanboys will lose they're fucking minds!!! As if you called they're Mom fat and ugly or something. Anyway, great video. Keep up the great work.
Gunvein at first really remind me of Soukyugurentai, Battle Garegga and obviously Crimzon Clover. i can clearly see the lock on scan pattern similiarly like sokyugurentai and also the type A ship on gunvein reminds me of swordfish fish in sokyugurenti (even having the same lock on scan pattern) im surprised that you said the pattern and level design in Gunvein similiarly like SDOJ. i feels SDOJ is much harash in term of that aspect lol. because i feels the pattern in Gunvein is looks like having a big bullets that fill the screen while SDOJ not only they're both harrashly fill their bullet on screen but in SDOJ the enemy bullet is looks similiar like DoJ/DFK size. small than Gunvein to me but also having narrow pattern that seems impossible to dodge (at least for me lol) What i love about gunvein is the ship design successfuly bring me back to PSX era of shmup where the ship color looks vibrant with bulky armored covered the ship and not necessarily too much ornament on them. it feels like im playing Zanac X Zanac from ps1. how nostalgic. and also don't forget to appriciate the tutorial section is really helpful for newcomer when Miko(Type B pilot) is introducing the pattern type(like stasis, aim, random) and also she teach us how to dodge on certain situation like explaining micro and macro dodging. i really love that and definietly recommend this game for newcomer who one to play bullet hell but don't like touhou because its overrated lol (jk). the thing that i don't like in gunvein is. i feels gunvein bomb is not entirely unvulnerable.i remember i got hit while bombng and aggresizely going on the top of the screen and then a single ship hit me casually. and also one more part to me is the music. The music from demo game is entirely cool and engaging. i love the menu screen theme and tutorial theme feels like floating in space mentally. selecting ship you feels want to rap dancing. stage1 and boss theme is even more aggresively dancing. but stage 2-final stage theme feels nothing to me. not saying the music quality is bad. i just not feels anything in stage 2-final stage music. but regardless im stil recommend this game to anyone and also consider the best STG game release on 2022.

Tutorials are 10/10 in this game and you'll get your money back before you even start the main game. Great review as always. I struggle with the lock mechanic that force you to release special and hit shot to actually release the missile load. I would expect a simple release of special would discharge? I might be all wrong about this but I found the button dance a bit disruptive to my focus.
I play with a button that toggles shot. So I don't have to hold down shoot at all, just press once and it keeps firing. (Steam controller setup allows for assigning toggle to buttons under controller setup). That way I only focus on pressing and releasing the special button.
I saw that this just released in the Switch on the 11th with PS4 and Xbox ports expected later this year. My favorite platform for shmuos when possible has been the Xbox, but is there any advantage to waiting for the PS4 or Xbox or should I just go with the Switch version so I can play it sooner?
Nice Review! Offtopic: I've been playing Psikyo collection on switch, in which you calculated an input lag of 6 frames, which is a lot for 1cc. I'm thinking about changing to the Ps4 version, but I don't know if it worths the change. Have you tested the input lag? Thanks
hey everyone, does anyone here have any experience with shmup arch on steam deck, or just experience with the steam deck in general, am considering getting one to use as my indy game machine since triple a seems to be dropping the ball lately
Honestly i played everything playable in demo, and I wanted to like this game, but i did not. It has everything, but at the same time nothing to catch me. I spent few hours in demo, considered it good, and by the end of the day forgot it even existed until this review
Well the issue with demos is that they just show the early stages of the game, which are typically the most mild right. So I'd still say give the full release a try, especially with the rogue mode you can jack up the spawn rate and it gets crazy
Ok, ill have to admit it, i only watched half of your review. Next thing i did was downloading the demo. 45 minutes later i bought the game. What a pleasent surprise this is! I think the art design is kinda bland, but the gameplay is amazing. Feels like Dodonpachi x Crimzon Clover.
4:51 i disagree because you still have to learn to perfect the first couple stages to beat the later ones effortlessly. it rewards resource management cave tlbs are also like this. you try to reach them with as many lives as possible and then pay taxes ddp lets you have up to 6 bombs so it's not so much an issue with stockpiling as it is with the stupidly forgiving bomb system. cave realised this and made it so that in doj you can have up to 6 as shotia but only with stronger shots, 4 as leinyan but only with stronger laser, and 2 as exy with stronger laser and shots with capped resources deaths aren't as meaningful because you can just get an extend right after and be back to max a shmup should cap resources if it's designed with that in mind but it's not necessary for all shmups imo
I didn't mean to say that all shmups should have capped resources, was just pointing out the merits of a capped system when combined with this games extend system :-)
Looks like a cave game (ar leAst the bullet patterns) at his Core, with ships with diferent styles at Gameplay. I can see bullet hells with roguelite elements being interesting if they limit to diferent stages or enemyes formations. But not with changes in the attributes of our ship or enemyes (too much random mess). Bullet hells are reaching a point that is almost Impossible to do something inovative when ir comes with bullets patterns, só the tendêncy for inovation Will bé in other section. I Will try the demo, but i like more a oldschool shootemup than bullet hell

As someone who enjoys schmups but admittedly isn’t the best at them, this game seems very appealing.
I think it will!
This game looks fun, i bad at game
edit: i think it would be cool in shmups where your character has to leave their ship or vehicles and then its more like guwange, so that way i can see the anime girl in game and shoot em with a human sized gun or somethin
I agree 💯 zuffin, I want more on foot shmups 👣
!!MAN I F'ING LOVE THIS STATION!!
*ain't NOBODY playing
Shooters
RPGs
Sides rollers{you DO know, MY Shyt!!}
But...Here..."RIGHT HERE"
HELL JEYEAH
Glad to hear it my friend, yes if you want shmups this is the place to be :-)
Great review, Bro.
Can’t wait to play this!
This looks incredible!
Absolutely!
Outzone is coming out on Steam soon, will you take a look at that?
Oh hell yeah
I prefer the classic air gallet Twin cobra Truxton style of shmups. not a big fan of chaos in the shmups.
Gunvein at first really remind me of Soukyugurentai, Battle Garegga and obviously Crimzon Clover. i can clearly see the lock on scan pattern similiarly like sokyugurentai and also the type A ship on gunvein reminds me of swordfish fish in sokyugurenti (even having the same lock on scan pattern) im surprised that you said the pattern and level design in Gunvein similiarly like SDOJ. i feels SDOJ is much harash in term of that aspect lol. because i feels the pattern in Gunvein is looks like having a big bullets that fill the screen while SDOJ not only they're both harrashly fill their bullet on screen but in SDOJ the enemy bullet is looks similiar like DoJ/DFK size. small than Gunvein to me but also having narrow pattern that seems impossible to dodge (at least for me lol)
What i love about gunvein is the ship design successfuly bring me back to PSX era of shmup where the ship color looks vibrant with bulky armored covered the ship and not necessarily too much ornament on them. it feels like im playing Zanac X Zanac from ps1. how nostalgic. and also don't forget to appriciate the tutorial section is really helpful for newcomer when Miko(Type B pilot) is introducing the pattern type(like stasis, aim, random) and also she teach us how to dodge on certain situation like explaining micro and macro dodging. i really love that and definietly recommend this game for newcomer who one to play bullet hell but don't like touhou because its overrated lol (jk).
the thing that i don't like in gunvein is. i feels gunvein bomb is not entirely unvulnerable.i remember i got hit while bombng and aggresizely going on the top of the screen and then a single ship hit me casually. and also one more part to me is the music.
I find the name to be rather phallical.
Gotta Drainus my Gunvein.
Oh that is funny!! I never picked up on that ha. Gunvein: full sized edition
Another instant download.
Perhaps this shall free me from the alluring limbo that is convenient horizontals on the Switch.
Yo man, I watch your new videos always cool to check out new games that need more attention. I also liked your HARDEST SNES GAME?! Hagane No-Death 1cc w/ Commentary video and thought ... why not make one similar for iconic games . I have been learning Battletoads on NES "the Hardest game on the nes" and thought of posting on here as a suggestion topic on here. GG once again my dude.
I m really happy to hear that you enjoy the 1cc commentary vids! I plan on doing more, as they are one of my fav formats for the channel. You should check out my latest, sin and punishment! ua-cam.com/video/qTclPNrbR80/v-deo.html
I can see Players actually going to point blank more on this game
Quicker to kill, less to deal the Walls
*Now.. to get dem juicy scores*
Still waiting for this to release on switch if it ever happens
Mark how would you rank Gunvein compared to Crimson Clover or DDP Ressurrection?
You also forgot to mention the reason, two big reasons actually, to buy this game
Oh yes very true my friend! Support the wifu lol
Is there already a release date on ´ switch (yeah I’m a Mac user… don’t have a PC … so I shmup on switch 🙈) ?
I don't think so, but I am guessing in a few months?
I saw that this just released in the Switch on the 11th with PS4 and Xbox ports expected later this year. My favorite platform for shmuos when possible has been the Xbox, but is there any advantage to waiting for the PS4 or Xbox or should I just go with the Switch version so I can play it sooner?
Where is your review of Cygni?
I'll buy it if the dev fix the diagonal movements being faster than hori/vert movement
Sup Kae!!
@@soratheorangejuicemascot5809 hi sora
@@kaerithmallock you gonna do a 1cc if they fix some few problems?
Pretty sure the diagonal movement is normalized my friend
@@soratheorangejuicemascot5809 sure, the game is interesting
Man WE CAN COUNT in marc. Allways !tribvtes from germany
Yes couldn't miss this one!
Would you recommend this game if I just wanna see more of the cutie in the glasses?
W👾W
When it iz released for Home consoles i will extra rejoice. Thankz Mang
Nice Review!
Offtopic: I've been playing Psikyo collection on switch, in which you calculated an input lag of 6 frames, which is a lot for 1cc.
I'm thinking about changing to the Ps4 version, but I don't know if it worths the change. Have you tested the input lag?
Thanks
I believe ps4 is around 4 frames. So not a huge difference but maybe enough?
I have! The PS4 version is 4 frames, so def worth the change to it
BUST out the "Dualies" right right, Cowboy Reverend!
Oh! ... .. That will be my new highscore initials. YES. .. .. "REV".
hey everyone, does anyone here have any experience with shmup arch on steam deck, or just experience with the steam deck in general, am considering getting one to use as my indy game machine since triple a seems to be dropping the ball lately
Is this ever going to come
Out on ps4 or is it cancelled!? Fed up with waiting.
Like dreamer is my goty thus far, but let's see how this stacks up Omg... its HERE
Oh yeah I gotta catch up with that release! Crazy stacked release sched right now
@@TheElectricUnderground It's so fuckin good.. it has espgaluda and ketsui references and stuff that make me wanna scream
picked gunvein up btw >:))
This is goty - a masterpiece.
Glad you picked up the game, but it s your moral duty to return and watch the other half of the review ;-)
@@TheElectricUnderground Ha, yeah i already did. Even watched it a second time to better understand the games mechanics.
*A Shmup "MADE IN GERMANY" (Hannover) !? ...holy Cow ;)*
someone please tell me what game is this: 11:19
its astra or wtf
Yes mechanical star astra is the name :-)
@@TheElectricUnderground THANKS
People who play this kind of game are use to taking showers without getting wet.
I feel dumb, but I can't figure out what the golden bomb fragments do. Like what is the difference between them and the normal ones?
They give you about 1 second of invincibility, so you can grab one and go through bullets to get in a better position
Looks a phenomenal shooter & a def future must-buy on console 👍
Absolutely!! I m looking forward to the console release!
Great shmup indeed, almost Cave quality. Too bad it doesn't have 2p mode.
4:51 i disagree because you still have to learn to perfect the first couple stages to beat the later ones effortlessly. it rewards resource management
cave tlbs are also like this. you try to reach them with as many lives as possible and then pay taxes
ddp lets you have up to 6 bombs so it's not so much an issue with stockpiling as it is with the stupidly forgiving bomb system. cave realised this and made it so that in doj you can have up to 6 as shotia but only with stronger shots, 4 as leinyan but only with stronger laser, and 2 as exy with stronger laser and shots
with capped resources deaths aren't as meaningful because you can just get an extend right after and be back to max
a shmup should cap resources if it's designed with that in mind but it's not necessary for all shmups imo
I didn't mean to say that all shmups should have capped resources, was just pointing out the merits of a capped system when combined with this games extend system :-)
The biggest question is now, is it good on the Switch?
I would hope they do a good port! Gamemaker 2 to switch should be solid
The best birthday present i recive this year.
Happy birthday 🎉🎉🎁
Looks like a cave game (ar leAst the bullet patterns) at his Core, with ships with diferent styles at Gameplay. I can see bullet hells with roguelite elements being interesting if they limit to diferent stages or enemyes formations. But not with changes in the attributes of our ship or enemyes (too much random mess). Bullet hells are reaching a point that is almost Impossible to do something inovative when ir comes with bullets patterns, só the tendêncy for inovation Will bé in other section. I Will try the demo, but i like more a oldschool shootemup than bullet hell
I gotta try this game!
YOUR REVIEW MEANS NOTHING! I already bought it.
Oh snap ha!!
On Switch now?
Not yet, but I think it will be soon
Game Looks Amazing!!!
it is :-)
Great review! What's the music, the game ost?
Yes I believe it is the leaderboard music from the game :-) i took one of the tracks I liked and looped it.
