Wow! What a great new camera! I will stick with my Z6ii but I think the Z6iii is extraordanary great news for the z mount system. Nikon is really challenging the other manufacturers in this mid pricerange.
I have been a Nikon user since the F and I bought one of the first Z6's. This is the one I'll trade in for.

Most exciting camera release to me since I started photography in 2020- I predict this will be my first Nikon camera
Overall love the upgrade and I'll be getting one. Personally don't like the new flip out screen, the tilting version was much more useful for me the non blogger, but everyone was screaming for it, so props to Nikon for giving the crowd what they want on that I suppose. Great intro review, thanks!

I pulled the trigger and purchased one of these babies from B+H in NYC. Moved up from my existing Z6 ii. Lenses are 20mm, 40mm, and 70-180.
This is the one I’ve been waiting for to partner my Z9 🤩🙌🏻🙌🏻

Nice Matt. A very informative review. I’ve just bought the Z8 having pondered for some time whether or not to wait for the Ziii. Initial thoughts are certainly not one of regret. I had high resolution at the top of my checklist ! Nevertheless a very impressive camera at that price point
Good release Nikon - just need them to do a Z70/Z90 and then refresh downwards, e.g., Z5 II, Z50, Z30 & ZFC

Great first look Matt.. Will be interested to see your deep dive when you have more time with it. And confirms your thoughts of a 24MP sensor for the tier below the Z8/Z9.
Yeah 33 to 45 just did not seem like enough of a difference, and I was printing 2m canvas with 12MP files in 2008 ... 24 with pixel shift, and AI enlargement is more than enough for many many use cases :)

If I hadn't bought the Zf, which I adore, I'd have definitely bought this new addition to the Z range.
Considering its price point, just like the Zf, Expeed 7, with all the goodies incorporated, yes please.
However it hasn't got the looks of my handsome Zf and I get all I need from my Zf too.
Nikon have certainly turned things around. They may have been late to the mirrorless party but they have definitely arrived now. The others must be a little nervous.

Ricci works for Nikon so it is his job to evaluate Nikon gear, he had it for four months.
Nikon have finally convinced me to buy a small body companion for my Z9. Internal 6k RAW is fantastic plus down sampled 4k (unfortunately no open gate-but hardly a deal breaker) makes for a very useful small body video camera, in most respects far more flexible to use than my full frame Blackmagic CC cameras. At this point in-body audio becomes the most significant constraint though the array of small form factor 32-bit capable external recorders grows almost weakly. So not that big a deal either. All in all, I can’t wait to get shooting!
It doesn't get any mare cringe than people boasting about how many cameras they've already got, announcing that they'll just throw another couple of grand down to pick up another one.

For 4.5k bit dearer than I was expecting. Now tossing up whether to get the z6iii for just the ZF as an upgrade from the zfc
Agreed, very expensive in Australia, I am looking to upgrade my Z5, and was waiting for this to be released, I might as well spend the extra grand and get a Z8.
Looks like a great camera. 😊 But having the Z8, I'm hoping and waiting for an updated Z50. Will order that as a backup camera and travel companion.

I am a retired long time enthusiast (edit: STILL photographer). Time to upgrade from a D7500 to the Z6II (at a $1000Cdn off) and a used 24-120mm (lots of them around) (edit 2: video irrelevant)
i think you will get good deals on second hand Z6-II cameras soon.
Well done Nikon! As a Z9 owner , I am not planning to buy this one, but on second thought, maybe this would make a great second body all thought my Z6 still works great!

Thank you for yet another simple but effective review. I am D500 user now wanting to plunge into mirrorless world. I have used Nikon FM2, D60, D7000, D500 and D850 so as you can see I have been with Nikon family since long. I am torn between ZF, Z7ii and Z6iii. I mostly shoot portraits and landscape. And due to some personal limitations I am finding D500 a heavy system to use. When I move to mirrorless, I will be probably using a macro/prime and 24-120 f/4S. That would cover my needs. My concerns with ZF over Z6ii was lack of XQD card. Else ZF was a clear winner over Z6ii. I don’t have major video requirement. Now with Z6iii in play, I am debating the autofocus capability for portraits. But with discounts Z7ii is quality contender with so many MPs to play with. Any guidance or recommendation would be appreciated. Thank you!

Have it ordered but on the fence about it. Z9 and Zf are already in my arsenal but the way the market has been with new gear, it’s insane trying to get your hands on new stuff just to get a feel for it before you buy. Nikon’s site was clearly getting hammered as I gave up on them with the constant “we’re having an issue processing your order” prompts.

Mattm given the announced capabilities of the z6III and the recent drop in the z8 pricing, do you see a z7iii in the future? Seems like a very narrow window to fit into. Just interested in your opinion.
The partically stacked sensor will also likely decrease the dynamic range and increase read noise compared to a conventional BSI, it will also bring more hot pixels during longer exposures (astro-landscapes for example).
So for stills and some video, the Z6II would likely be the better option.
Very tempting to turn my Z6ii into a Z6iii as the perfect Z8 companion/B-cam. Really hoping they add 240FPS 1080 to the Z8, would have loved that a few times so far
My order is already in. As an aside I am pleased that they stayed with 24 mp. I do not need, or want 33 or 45 mp.
It is an ideal companion to the Z9 or Z8 for those of us who want a very capable second body but need to keep costs in mind. Keeping it light makes packing for international flights a lot easier too. Two Z9s in the carry on bag, restricts your lens selection quite a bit.
does the DX Crop also apply to 4K 100fps or just 120fps? I mean in H265 and H264
i guess the low noise and high dynamic range performance that i saw in the details of a patent that nikon filed about two years ago with switchable capacitors parallel to every sensor pixel came to reality. one bit (stop) of lower noise and two bits (stops) of extra dynamic range was my prediction. could be spot on.
i guess leaving one extra stop of headroom to not getting the high lights blown out before post processing is a kind of cool safety feature. when it is the right time to switch to the Z6-III, i can't wait to film the fire jugglers on the islandvof koh tao in the middle of the night. this extreme contrast of the dark beach and sea but the bright fire and reflections in the sea might be a good test.
How does the Z6iii handle EVF black out?
Very interesting Matt, you said that you think the 8 stop ibis increase over the 5 or 5.5 of the Z8 is a firmware thing I wonder if we will get 8 stops on our Z8 and Z9 bodies ?

For me the key features are the speed, flippy screen, better EVF, AF performance of the Z8/9/f, PRE-CAPTURE, enhanced video specs, all at a sweet spot $2500 usd price point. Nikon priced it just right to not cut into sales of the Zf or Z8. I will get one but not right away - not in a hurry, still enjoying my Z6ii and Z7ii. I do suspect we will see a bump in used Z6ii's and Z7ii's on ebay over the coming weeks!
Does my z6ii battery grip work in z6iii?
This new camera is amazing, as a long time Nikon user it's a worthy upgrade from my D750 and Z5. Not sure if I can afford that price range. Personally I don't need the amount of video specs. I'm holding out till the Z5II comes about then I'll make a decision on this the ZF or the Z5II.
Is it slow to be ready to shoot after turning on like the Z 6ii?
Does the Nikon Z6iii have continuous shooting at 240fps with auto focus? Currently have the Panasonic G9 mk2 where I can shoot at up to 300fps BUT with manual focus. How would you compare the two cameras for 240 fps shooting?
Wasn't going to get it - but dang....looks like I should add one to the kit. But it won't be for a while. Glad I didn't get a Zf! Unless Nikon comes out with a really nice Z50ii...
Did you test the color profile editing features in NX studio?
No one seems to have much info on it but it seems like a sweet feature that I hope makes it to Z8.
I’m thinking that we’ll learn a lot more about it in a few weeks when the updated version of NX Studio is released (along with Nikon Cloud functionality).
Nikon is slowly and methodically releasing killer cameras for us Nikon lovers. This will be my next camera.

As a wedding videographer, I really wish it recorded video to 2 card slots. I hope they add this with firmware soon.
I am debating between the Zf and the Z6iii. It is USD $500 price difference. What are the differences in the real world apart from the ergonomics? I wish the Z6iii would have came with a sensor shield to help reduce dust spots when switching lenses. I may lean in favor of the Zf after all.

I'm so glad I got the Zf and ignored further hypes. That semi-stacked sensor is worthless if flash sync is still the same and it looks a camera for videographers
Z6 series was always aimed at videographers, and the gut feel going into this was no different. Very happy for the videography crowd, honestly, this sets the bar for other manufacturers in this price-range now. This one’s punching very high above its weight.
I have a Z9 and 2x Zf’s, no need for me to get this one, just extremely happy that Nikon is very creative with its last few cameras, very excited to see that Z9H with fully stacked and Expeed8 launching #soon :)
ZF isn't for everyone I do not regret buying it either and yes this camera is heavily improved for video the 20fps stills in raw isn't to be ignored either but I rarely ever shoot that high with the Z8.
Damnnnnnnn this is EVERYTHING I needed.. I kinda wish I’d waited and not got the Z8 🥲.. flip screen and 4k 120.. not sure I wanna go back to 24mp though. But I do like the idea of a smaller body and being able to record without a monitor.. damn what a pickle.. I can imagine I won’t get much value in selling my z8.. so I might just have to stick with it.

Tempting but, my next jump will be for minimum 32/33 MP. For a still shooter, I think only tracking is improved mainly. Will wait for z7iii, if out of budget, will see Sony a7riv used.
