  • We came across this straight and clean appearing 67 Plymouth while picking up parts for one of our cars.
    Once we go closer though, it became obvious that this poor thing was going to end up one of two ways. A parts car or in the hands of an unscrupulous classic car flipper and passed on to an unsuspecting buyer.
    Here's a look at the damage, how it happens and how even though this car is clearly wasted, it's still worth a pretty substantial amount of money.

    This has been one of my pet peeves for years. Sellers thinking because the car was parked for a decade and not driven it's worth a fortune. Then you buy it and go to load it on a trailer and it bends like a chalupa. Big difference between parking it on a driveway and parking it on Mother Earth. Parking it on grass is like parking it on a wet sponge.

      I run into the same problem here in New York State where I live, THESE people think "their car" is magically worth the same money as what they saw on Barrett Jackson Auto Auction, even though "their car" has NOT ran in the past 40 years, needs nearly $30,000 to $50,000 in labor, parts and repairs JUST to make it a running and driving car again!!
      AND I don't know how many of times I walked up on a car that was solidly worth anywhere between $500 to $2000 and hear the owner tell me "I has to be worth $20,000 the way it sits!" or some crazy thing like that as well!! In some cases the car isn't even "worth" their asking price BECAUSE technically IT IS NOT even an actually "rare car" either!! For another example I met a guy selling a 1966 Mustang that had been sitting in a pasture, where the farm animals had dented EVERY panel on the car! THE CAR DID have all its original glass, and the only straight part on it was the emblems! It WAS an automatic, with an inline six cylinder engine, AND his asking price was $22,000!!! That price would have made more sense if it was a "R Code" car, but with a standard inline six and automatic, it certainly was NOT worth his asking price at a time when most cars AT THE TIME, IN THIS condition sold for just $500 in the early 1980s. Likewise in the early 1980s, YOU could have bought a street legal, RUNNING 1966 Mustang equally equipped for around $1500 to $2000 back then!!
      And today it is far worse then it was in my area, as many of these people who own these cars and unrealistic about what it will cost to make the car run and drive NOW!! YES that car on Mecum Auto Auction sold for $30,000, BUT that car can be legally licensed, insured and driven TOMORROW, once the check cleared!! And scrap metal IS just that, which in my area, for a complete car, is only worth around $300!!!

    Bought a 63 GP that sat on a trailer in S. Florida for years...probably what saved some of it. Though mine is not as bad as this. Mine being has sold floors and a decent trunk and she actually starts up and runs...don't drive...no brakes. Needs lower 1/4s and some other extensive rust repair. AND AND lol she needed a frame, but got one from California.
    This was a Washington state car originally...so the rust is a bit of a challenge, but the ole gal needed to be rescued. Complete car with her original interior and 389 and of course the trunk full of extras. Even a spare rear glass and all 4 power window setups. I could sell all the extras and get what I paid for her.
    Great video...keep up the good work and thanks for your time putting these together. 👍

    That car is worth every penny at $1800. Most people think that the 66 and 67 Satellite was almost identical. Truth is, the basic shell, doors, glass, rear bumper, and hood were the same. ON the upside there ARE places to buy replacement sheet metal and parts, AND if you know what you are doing, YOU could replace a lot of what is rotted out!!!! BUT the down side IS, it will cost you far more than what it is actually WORTH as a running car, TO MAKE IT a "running car"!! AND this has been my complaint about where I live for years!!!
      Because in my area (I live in Upstate New York) the owners of these cars, assume their cars are magically worth $20,000 even though it hasn't moved out of their yard in 40 years!! AND they ignore the fact that by the time you get the labor, parts and other repairs done to it, it will cost you nearly $50,000 just to make it RUNNING, and Street legal again, which will probably take you a few months to a couple of years to complete anyhow!! BUT then honestly you have $30,000 into a car that was only worth $500 to $2500 to start with. AND at that point even scrap metal prices are only $300 (in my area again) to scrap a complete car!!!

    His price is actually really fare on that, and this is actually how I prefer to buy them. I don't have to worry about shady work that will take me twice as long to un-do and fix. You can see what is wrong with it and the price is actually a good deal. If you have the skill set to do all the work yourself and access (already own) a car that has the majority of what this one needs, you can make this thing good again on the "cheap". But for the average person wanting to get started into this game, taking on this project is starting the game on expert level.

Quarters were still crappy. Boxed the front rails, torsion bar crossmember, made flat floors and trunk floor. Drove it for years and sold it to a guy in Louisiana during the second great depression. I told him before the first dollar was negotiated that this car was a total pile when i got it, springs through the trunk, and I made it as good as i could with what i had. It was safe and drivable. But it was never going to be a "nice" car. He wanted one badly and just said he would pro street it. Still miss the thing

    Once in awhile you can sell something that you have parted out if somebody else wants to try to take that project on, but usually we use what we Harvest and try to sell the rest if it could be used in any way shape or form

    And it would be a shame to crush it.
    Everythings is in good shape from Windows, trims, fenders, hood,etc.
    My neighbor sold a 68 roof for 300 last year, and it had a little rust but no dent.
    The 8 3/4 rear end is 1000$ alone if it's in good shape around here.
    Still a very good donor.

    Yeah, I am a firm believer hating bondo mobiles and faked up stuff but I am also a believer in restoration within reason, I've patch paneled on old cars but with good solid pieces of metal shaped and hardly any bondo to smooth it out and never made any money to speak of when I got tired of the vehicles I fixed for personal use. See, I'm a little confused cause I've seen folks extoll the virtues of a similar condition 57 chevy and they feel happy they have a title/vin/roof and glass and alot of stuff left over. Only retired or well off and retired/don't have to work folks have the time and/or money to take on a project. Unsure what we are talking about here when talking about patch panels, I mean, are we talking about patch panels welded in and bondo filled an inch everywhere on a extremely rusted panel, or are we talking about super value for flippers who call it a pristine barn find in original condition?....Someone I know has a 62 chevy stepside with a later added 396/th 400, but it has rust holes in the lower corners of the cab, fenders, the stepside and the bed,..the bed needs numerous small patches,...all for the cost mainly of the engine/transmission and the newer tires and brakes he put on, $2500...maybe its kind of steep, but its where I am at I guess, what I can get that still drives without going to another state. NO EXCESSIVE PATCH WELDING ALLOWED?..I mean, I know it likely needs some fresh floor boards,...I've done this sort of repairs before cause I like cars and have been poor. Now this other stuff, ..frame rot,..wow, I am not a real body and fender man and no real shop anymore on family land, if I ever attempt a repair of something like that then it had better be blamed on alcohol or insanity cause it would be better for myself to pass on a project like that unless I wanted the engine/transmission.

    This is why so many people in other parts of the world think of us as wasteful, ignorant, lazy pigs who appreciate nothing and junk everything as soon as it goes out of style and it's not NEW! NEW! NEW! any more. If I had a dollar for every cool old car that was left to rot like this by idiots because of an oil leak or a rusted out muffler, or maybe they just didn't like the looks of it, I'd have enough to buy any kind of car I wanted. This breaks my heart and makes me sick.

    Rebuild the frame rails and sill completely out of stainless steel. It may cost about $80,000 or so, but worth it . Then you can put it out for pasture or grass and need not worry about it any more.
    Uncle Tony, this is what i,ve been saying to all you car gurus on you tube and even talk radio. You just don,t want to say that buzz word and that is stainless steel. Or "PREDATORY ENGINEERING " by car makers. Uncle Tony , Ford did experiment back in 1937 in which they made a stainless steel car. Which is today in an auto museum in Ohio. Allegany/Ludlam was behind the venture.
    Hence ,when i did over my 1979 chevy Van's areas where it rusted out with stainless steel, it was the glory of my life in which i enjoyed drinking wine while i was welding. YET THE WELDING BEADS PUDDLED CONSISTENTLY. And that was 15 years ago.
    Hey Uncle Tony, get real about stainless steel.

    I've been telling people for decades not to store cars on dirt or under trees.
    If you were trying to rot out a car on purpose you could not come up with a better scenario.
    If I go to look at a car and it's parked on dirt or under a tree I already know it's going to be bad before I even look at it.

    I don't understand this. What does the "right metal" mean? If someone welded in panels and made it look nice and it's structurally sound, where's the problem? I bought a junk car in similar condition to this. I intend to do this to it myself, with my limited knowledge, as I learn (and keep not flip). What's so bad about it?

    • @dballer51
      @dballer51 Рік тому

      "Right metal" is just referring to actual full on replacement panels I'm assuming, instead of fabbing patch panels. There's nothing wrong with making patches to fix rust, hell I made floorboards out of sheet metal from washing machines. Use what you got and don't listen to the people who see patch panels and say you did it wrong, as long as you use the proper gauge sheet metal and weld it correctly, you we be just fine.

    • @LifeisGood762
      @LifeisGood762 Рік тому

      @dballer51 OK thanks this is what I was wondering. I mean, if there's no reproduction panel available what else can you do? Crazily enough I was actually thinking of using an old washing machine in the basement for the trunk pan and maybe some floor.

    If a flipper can get it on the road, that present owner can surely buy aftermarket panels and a bunch of brazing rods and do everthing himself cheap, without the overhead of hiring outside labor and paying shop overhead. If I was him, I'd keep it as a no hurry project
