There is no winner or loser here, it's what you prefer. Meinl certainly has the most unique looking hats. I've been searching for the perfect hi hat for over 30 years, have played on an insane amount of hi hats, and finally settled on a set of 14" Zildjian K (regular) hi hats. They're just the most all-round, in my opinion. The hand hammering gives them a warmer sound while also still sounding crisp. I really liked the way the K Sweet series sounded here, so out of all the ones played in the video I would go with those. But honestly, they all sound impressive. Seems like they don't make bad sounding hats anymore : )
I'm not a fan of dull, 'fluffy' sounding hi-hats, preferring crisp and crunchy, so here's my top 5: 1.) Paiste Signature Dark Crisp - no contest, an amazing set of hi-hats - body and brightness. 2.) Meinl Classic Custom Dark - a surprise - maybe a little bright for a 'dark' cymbal? 3.) Istanbul Agop Xist natural - very close to 4 4.) Zildjian A New Beat - a classic sound 5.) Sabian AAX Medium Brilliant - quite nice too I'm a Paiste man anyway, and was surprised that I didn't like the 602s, but I did pick these with my eyes closed - promise!
I own the 16” Meinl classic custom dark hi hats. They must be played to know what they can do but I like them more then most of the hats I have spent a lot more on.
I have a pair of very posh Paiste Twenty Series Brilliant Full Hi-hats, which are surprisingly heavy, some Signature Fulls and a pair of Alpha Metal Edge 14s - the LOUDEST hi-hat Paiste ever made - for my closed X-hat (when I use it), because I want people to be able to hear the damn thing. But you wanna know what I use for day-to-day band practice and most gigs? An old Paiste Rude Sound Edge bottom with a vintage 70s black logo Heavy 'Rock' Bottom on top. There's a reason why half the comments are mentioning the Paiste Dark Crisp Hi Hats - they sound perfect! From the moment I got them they became my main hi hats, especially for recording in the studio - they are dark and smooth (not harsh or piercing) but still have so much clarity and articulation ...
Dimitri Fantini that was my take after listening to this. I switched to paiste twenty series crashes and they are incredible. I was a zildjian guy for years
New Beat, probably since I’ve been listening to my paint for nearly forty years. Meinl and Agop were really nice, too! Frankly, I could happily play any of these indefinitely.

I mostly love the Zildjian 14" New Beat Hi-Hat because it's a really popular it crispy clear chick sound and it works with all styles of music and it definitely sounds awesome in the studio also too. Meinl sounds awesome too it has the simular as Zildjian sound
Same here..... A lot of these other unique styles of hats sound interesting, but won't too work well musically in a lot of contexts. Personally I love the new AAX stuff, maybe the cleanest-playing and most articulate set of hats I've ever tried, and no harsh tones.
You must like the higher pitch then, because they had the highest pitch, you should try 13" hats too. My friend had a set of 13" K's that sounded smooth like the K's do in this video but at a higher pitch, more like the As or AAX, you should try them!

I came for the hi-hats but REALLY WANT THAT SNARE DRUM! However, I still use my New Beats from '76 more often than all my other hats. They cut, sizzle and are responsive.
I agree with you, my preference goes to the dark crisp, it has a little less high frequency, compare to the meinl custom dark, wich i like. But the Meinl custom dark is for me the second. Third place goes to the agop.
"Thank You" for the Hi-Hat Comparison Video. Technique spot on for what we need to catch all tonal levels...I purchased the Meinl Classic Custom Dark Expanded Pack before I saw this. Just got them today, they are dark and need some fine adjustments on pedal/clutch. Istanbul Agop Xist "By far" best sustain and resonance. I'm Sold! Thanks for replying to email so quick. These are hard to find!
When it got down to the head to head the high hats that sounded like they could work in most playing situations were the Zildjian New Beats. That being said the best high hat cymbals I've ever played and owned are Zildjian Quick Beats (bottom cymbal has no bell and four holes) in 15" size. I bought them in 1980 and still like them best. I don't think Zildjian makes them any longer.
I had Zildjian New Beats in the 70's, I sold my 9 pc Ludwig set when I went off to the Navy. I just bought a used 10 pc DW performance set after 42 years. The Pro I bought them from said he thought the vintage New Beats are still the best. I found a pair from the 70's & bought them, still love them! I am now in Heaven!
Meinl sand hats were my favs, then both Istambul Agop, then sweet K, then (surprised because I thought they were too brilliant but actually they're not) the AAX and then the Meinl Classics Custom Dark.
Depends on what you are using them for. Live or recording? Live you can just go with the sound you like the best, usually the hats that cut through better depending on the pa system or lack of. Recording wise brighter is not better so lots of testing and listening is required. Testing must be done with all other instruments in the mix though to see where the hats sit.
That K Sweet sounded nice and pretty similar to my standard K-series 14" hats. Having said that, the A New Beat was my favourite - very fast, crisp and snappy tone without too much lows. I bet that one stands out very well in a mix.
☑️ Although I didn't "love" every cymbal set here, I can honestly say that there weren't any hi hats here that I particularly disliked. I think that even the "worst" of these 10 hi hats sounded perfectly acceptable. Normally, I can try out 5+ random hi hats in a store, and not like at least 1-2-3 of them. So, having 10 in a row that sound at least "pretty good", is definitely a first for me.....
Great job on sampling hi hats, comes down to personal preference, I just bought a pair of used AAX's in good condition, and will be having my first jam in a couple of weeks after 30 years of retirement from drumming, scored a sonor 505 and a pearl export few days ago at a bargain price, can't wait
Although the Paiste Signature and the Istanbul Agop 30th are really different in sound, I find it hard to decide which one I like more. The Zildjian A was like a blast from the past, it is just a classic sound. I still have ambivalent feelings towards to the K Sweet line (I love the K Mastersound though...amazing hi hats). I also quite liked Sabian Legacy. Meinl Classic was a surprise...for its price it did really well alongside the top tier cymbals.
Surprisingly, I liked both Meinl sets. The Custom Dark sound a little more all-round to me, but I really liked the Vintage Sand. (Still own my Pearl Wild 900 which I love.)
They all sound good enough on their own respective way. We have our own taste on how we like our hi-hats. Meinl dark custom surprises me though. My own pick is AAX, it just standouts with the rest!
The best two by far and surprisingly to me was #1 the Istanbul Agop Xist Natural 14” and #2 the Sabina AAX Medium Brilliant! I was surprised because I didn’t like the sound of the Paste and all the Zildijian’s near as much. I would go with both of these two to play with different sounds and styles. Great vid!
As a 67 year old drummer.....I've owned many of these.....not so much because I became unhappy with the current hats at the time but because I just wanted a change..........I've had of course many pairs of 14" Zildjian New Beats, 14" Paiste Signature, 13" Zildjian K top and a Dyno Beat bottom , 14" Zildjian Hybrids, 12" Zildjian New Beats and my current two pair now are 13" Zildjian K Custom Dark top with a 13" Dyno-Beat Bottom and to my surprise....14" Meinl Sound Caster Fusion.......I've never played the Sabians or Istanbul hats although I have several AGOP crashes and a AXX ride......Great cymbals! I guess my point is that I'd probably be happy with any 'top tier" brand.....and the size that would matter the most......I believe drummers that play with different bands and different setting probably need two sets of hats to fit their situation...
Listened to this video without watching and knowing what brand each cymbals is. As I was listening I wrote down how much I like each hi hat on the scale of one to 10 in the comment. Here's the results #1: 7/10 ( Zildjian new beat ) #2: 6/10 ( Zildjian K sweet ) #3: 6/10 ( Paiste formula ) #4: 10/10 ( Paiste Dark crisp ) #5: 5/10 ( Meinl Byzance Sand ) #6: 9/10 ( Meinl Classics Dark ) #7: 4/10 ( Istanbul Agop 30th anniversary ) #8: 6/10 ( Istanbul Agop Xist, I actually use this hi hat, it's weird to see I rated it a 6 ) #9: 10/10 ( Sabian AAX medium ) #10: 7/10 ( Sabian HHX legacy ) So, Paiste Signature Dark crisp and Sabian AAX sounded best to my ears, Closely fallowed by the Meinl Classics dark. Interesting results.

Thanks a lot for the comparation and for sharing it with us. A big hug from Buenos Aires!
I am a Sabian guy buy loved the quick beat hats.
The Zildjians are still the best!!! Especially the Ks!
I remember the first time I played a set of Ks. I realized I had basically been playing on a trash can lid.
always
+David Sutter Yup!
@@Noah-wv4td Dude the Keropes are pretty awesome, bummer that they're so much
I'm using that groove for my next sound check! Love this channel!
Thanks for watching, Steven!
Meinl sand hats were my favs, then both Istambul Agop, then sweet K, then (surprised because I thought they were too brilliant but actually they're not) the AAX and then the Meinl Classics Custom Dark.
Thank's for the consistant playing, it helps a lot.
K SWEET and HHX Legacy my personal pick. Very surprised by AAX and Signature Dark
The Meinl Custom Darks are perrrrrfect! I’m saving up for a set of them!!!
I think they all sound great.
Be nice to have all of them in my drum room.
Legacy hats it's my favorite
i could sit and watch these vids on a sat morning for hours
Have to admit that the old standby Zildjian As sounded the best. Amazed, but true.
Best damn Channel out there for demos and good advice. It can be overwhelming trying to choose. These vids are key.
Zildjian New beat 👊. Amazing sound.
Extremely helpful thanks. God that snare cuts through!!
Good lord, that snare has some serious bite.
Thank you for posting this!!! Dude at the end. Priceless
Thank you for watching!
Zildjian K and A are my favorites!
Surprisingly, I liked both Meinl sets. The Custom Dark sound a little more all-round to me, but I really liked the Vintage Sand. (Still own my Pearl Wild 900 which I love.)
I'm a Paiste fanboy, but those hats are the Meinls I've liked the most since my old Rake's. The entire Grebb pack stands out.
Those K-Sweet's are definitely on my "to buy" list. WOW.
Love those HHX Legacy hats. People sleep on Sabian.
Those Agop 30th Anniversary hats are lovely also.
They all sound good enough on their own respective way. We have our own taste on how we like our hi-hats. Meinl dark custom surprises me though. My own pick is AAX, it just standouts with the rest!
Those Sabian AAXs sound very very close to my 14inch Zildjian A Customs.
Paiste Formular 602 Modern Essential and Istanbul Agop Xist Natural are my favourites. Thanks for this video ✌🏼
Paiste Signature then the Zildjian A Beats. I thought the Sabians sounded quite good as well.
Change is good! Thanks for watching, Roy.
I play with just one band, and I need different ride cymbals for some songs😁
I have the 14 inch Paiste Twenty's Series Hi-Hats and they sound great live and in the studio. Also a pair of Zildjan KZ's that are incredible!
Zildjian New Beats, Istanbul Ion, Sabian Legacy in this test
I know that must have been tedious. Thank you for this. Saved me a bunch of time.
Thanks! Tedious, but fun.
I am a Paiste fan and user but Zildjian A New Beats is great!
Wow, hard to pick a favourite, they all sounded great.
Listened to this video without watching and knowing what brand each cymbals is. As I was listening I wrote down how much I like each hi hat on the scale of one to 10 in the comment. Here's the results
#1: 7/10 ( Zildjian new beat )
#2: 6/10 ( Zildjian K sweet )
#3: 6/10 ( Paiste formula )
#4: 10/10 ( Paiste Dark crisp )
#5: 5/10 ( Meinl Byzance Sand )
#6: 9/10 ( Meinl Classics Dark )
#7: 4/10 ( Istanbul Agop 30th anniversary )
#8: 6/10 ( Istanbul Agop Xist, I actually use this hi hat, it's weird to see I rated it a 6 )
#9: 10/10 ( Sabian AAX medium )
#10: 7/10 ( Sabian HHX legacy )
So, Paiste Signature Dark crisp and Sabian AAX sounded best to my ears, Closely fallowed by the Meinl Classics dark. Interesting results.
That Paiste modern just has something I am really looking for. Great vid!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
