Try paiste 2002-s and compare them Giant beats crashes and rides 15 inch hi hats if you would please.. thanks
I worked in drum shops for many years tried many makes still prefer avedis and Ks are great if you can find good ones
How about a walk through the museum and highlight some of your treasures?
@@Chickboom34 EXCELLENT idea, TS.
Chinas
I like the one that goes "tss tss tss..."
If perhaps you could be a bit more specific...lol
Because some go "sss, sss." Not zzu, zzu." You know what I mean.....
But what about the one that goes t t t t t t t....?"
You must like snake jazz...
Elio Banzer i quite like the one that goes “tic tic tic tic” although when it opens i don’t really like the shaaaa
Now that’s how to demo hats. Great approach and consistent grooves for more effective comparisons. Superb playing Tom.
Thanks, Rich!
Man I loved that groove. Nice work!
Very well mic'd too
shame if you hit with any kind of energy though
Agreed, that's a snappy pattern! 💪🏻
Hell, Im just impressed the guy can play the exact same beat for each one!
isn't that drummers job?
Oh noes a different hi hat I forgotten everything!
...a realy good drummer!!!
@@EHiggins not every drummer can that!
@@nichtimmer9134 If you practice the rudiments, you should be able to play the same rhythm on just about anything. Whether it's a practice pad, hi-hats, ride cymbal, tom tom, or snare you should able able to recreate the pattern. That's what drumming is all about.
@@EHiggins yes truh! ...i have not problems with that, but see many thay have that! ...some pro's also on live playing! ...have you never heard a differenz in live and studio records???
The cymbals are great, but damn this snare holy shit

THANK YOU
gotta try the Zildjian K Sweet 15" omg...fat dark warm ...just lovely
It's clear, there is no winner. What it finally comes down to is personal preference period.
Trueee
agreed. but man those Agop 30th anniversary's were sweeeeet!
Agreed i feel if you want that cheap sound the dark classics has a real beginner cymbal set up sound esecially when open. Good stick definition when closed though. Not bad for cheap compared to the rest cymbals.
Exactly. It's really just a matter of the pitch that you prefer.
Truth N Time You sorta missed the whole point.
Between these, I prefere Paiste Signature Dark Crisp, because of the fuller and open tone.
same here ;) the others can not compete
I agree. I think Paiste Signature hats are the best out there; nothing really compares.
I agree. They also look the coolest. I've got a pair of 900 series 15" heavy. But I like the AAX as well.
BoardSports I agree that the Paiste sound GOOD. But to say that no others can compete.......that’s taking it a bit too far. The Zildjian, Meinl and Sabian all sounded excellent.
A heavier byzance sand in 13' is probably the sound I'm after. But of the selection, the Paiste dark crisp were my favorite too
Zildjian A New Beat, they seem to have a little bit of everything that I like about a hi hat.
+1
Totally agree
🤘🤘🤘
Always my favorite, I don’t like playing any other hi hat. The right amount of heaviness, the right crisp, plenty of punch, doesn’t have that weird dark and open tone that so many hi hats have, and nothing has a better feel in my opinion. The response and rebound of an A New Beat is just ideal in my opinion.
Funny, they don’t sound anything like my New Beats from circa 1979. They must have changed manufacturing techniques.
Out of the given hi-hats, I was most impressed by the Paiste Signature Dark Crisp.
The Istanbul Agop 30th Anniversary, man that one is smooth and is most pleasing to my ears, it sounds incredible!
There is no winner or loser here, it's what you prefer. Meinl certainly has the most unique looking hats. I've been searching for the perfect hi hat for over 30 years, have played on an insane amount of hi hats, and finally settled on a set of 14" Zildjian K (regular) hi hats. They're just the most all-round, in my opinion. The hand hammering gives them a warmer sound while also still sounding crisp. I really liked the way the K Sweet series sounded here, so out of all the ones played in the video I would go with those. But honestly, they all sound impressive. Seems like they don't make bad sounding hats anymore : )
Came here for the hi-hat comparison....fell in love with the snare 🥁. Why you gotta do me like that 🤣
i appreciate you not just bashing out 2/4 for 7 minutes. the flourishes, accents and ghost notes you played really helped show what the hats' subtleties are, what they can do and how 'live' they are. nice work.
Now BIG HI HATS compared! Love this channel!
New Beat, probably since I’ve been listening to my paint for nearly forty years. Meinl and Agop were really nice, too! Frankly, I could happily play any of these indefinitely.
I'm not a fan of dull, 'fluffy' sounding hi-hats, preferring crisp and crunchy, so here's my top 5:
1.) Paiste Signature Dark Crisp - no contest, an amazing set of hi-hats - body and brightness.
2.) Meinl Classic Custom Dark - a surprise - maybe a little bright for a 'dark' cymbal?
3.) Istanbul Agop Xist natural - very close to 4
4.) Zildjian A New Beat - a classic sound
5.) Sabian AAX Medium Brilliant - quite nice too
I'm a Paiste man anyway, and was surprised that I didn't like the 602s, but I did pick these with my eyes closed - promise!
I own the 16” Meinl classic custom dark hi hats. They must be played to know what they can do but I like them more then most of the hats I have spent a lot more on.
I have a pair of very posh Paiste Twenty Series Brilliant Full Hi-hats, which are surprisingly heavy, some Signature Fulls and a pair of Alpha Metal Edge 14s - the LOUDEST hi-hat Paiste ever made - for my closed X-hat (when I use it), because I want people to be able to hear the damn thing. But you wanna know what I use for day-to-day band practice and most gigs? An old Paiste Rude Sound Edge bottom with a vintage 70s black logo Heavy 'Rock' Bottom on top. For cutting through a rock backline with halfway decent tone and masses of killer crunch it has no equal.
agreed
Completely agree
I like those same cymbals in exact reverse order...
There's a reason why half the comments are mentioning the Paiste Dark Crisp Hi Hats - they sound perfect! From the moment I got them they became my main hi hats, especially for recording in the studio - they are dark and smooth (not harsh or piercing) but still have so much clarity and articulation ...
Dimitri Fantini that was my take after listening to this. I switched to paiste twenty series crashes and they are incredible. I was a zildjian guy for years
So expensive though
The Sand hats were bright, lively, versatile and musical! Best hat for ANY situation and the obvious winner! Wow!
uh no
The Meinl Sand Hats are amazing!!!!
1:09 Zildjian New Beat
1:32 Zildjian K Sweet
1:55 Paiste Formula 602 Modern Essentials
2:18 Signature Dark Crisp
2:40 Meinel Byzance Vintage Sand
3:03 Meinel Classic Custom Dark
3:25 Istanbul agop 30th Anniversity
3:47 Istanbul agop Xist Natural
4:10 Sabian AAX Medium Briliant
4:32 Sabian HHX Legacy
Yep there is something comforting in the sound of New beats. They kind of defined the median standard of the classic all around hi-hat sound. I also definitely liked the Paiste 602
Good lord, that snare has some serious bite.
The Sabian Legacy hats surprised me- in the best possible way. Extremely musical with every type of attack.
Thanks!
Been shopping for a new cymbal pack and watching tons of these videos. I had this one playing in the background and went back to it after hearing my favorite hats of the bunch. Was pleased to see they were the Istanbol Agop Xist - which I already own! Love those Sabian HHX Legacy's though! I think that's going to be the pack I buy.. thanks !
What a great job... so good to see subscribe to a really good bunch of guys doing a good job. Amazing how old and new beat hats have survived all these years the paste and the sabians were incredible
In love with the Zildjian K Sweet my first love when I hear the sound is quality pure 💛🤧
This isn’t about rides bro. Please pay attention bro
@@dwdrumshdmotorcyclesvirgom7379 1:32
This literally should be the formula for all gear testing. Wow. Incredible playing and different elements of the Hi Hat beautifully articulated. Outstanding!! 👍 🤘
Excellent video. In a world where it’s difficult in most places to be able to walk into a store and sample all the equipment, videos like these are golden. Thank you! 🙏🏼🥁
Great comparison review, minimal talking, no messing around, same beat, properly miced and good angle view.
Thanks, Jason. Appreciate the positive feedback.
Initial impression: Paiste Signature Dark Crisp and Zildjian New Beats.
What a quality video! Very nicely done. I’m not even a drummer and I truly enjoyed it. Keep up the good work!
So grateful for the time and effort and quality guys put into your videos for us thank you
i liked the new beats, i was pleasantly surprised by the sand hats, the meinl classics dark i think can cut through anything and i also like the istanbul agop xist.
These videos are the best in the whole of the internet. This is what drummers wanted.
Thank you!!
The HHX Legacy and the Istanbul Agop 30y ann. are incredible
Yes!!! Exactly what I was going to say.
yes.only that two cymbals is top
Great video. Thanks. It's also nice to see you holding the sticks the way your supposed to.
WOW best video on hi hats I have ever seen! Thanks I am in a quandary and you just helped me decide. I have had a lot of cymbals in my 32 years of playing but you know the Paiste signature just seem to be the best to me. I have the Zildjian K hybirds now but time to move on! Thank you for going through all the trouble! BIG THANKS. o yea and the guy playing is a great player.
The Zildjians are still the best!!! Especially the Ks!
I remember the first time I played a set of Ks. I realized I had basically been playing on a trash can lid.
always
+David Sutter Yup!
@@Noah-wv4td Dude the Keropes are pretty awesome, bummer that they're so much
1. Zildjian New Beats
2. Paiste Signature Dark Crisp
3. Sabina HHX Legacy
agreed
My exact ranking
Id probably agree with you though the meinl darks might sneek into 3rd
Agree 100%
Totally agree...
Thank you so much for your demo videos! I've been wanting to update my cymbals for a while, but hard to choose with so many options out there. With your demo videos, I've really been able to narrow it down and slowly updating my set one by one with the sound I want. In this case, going with the Zildjian A New Beats. Just a solid hi hat sound all around. Keep it up!
Thanks, Conner. We appreciate the positive feedback!
Great demo, the Istanbul 30th anniversary are just such beautiful lush sounding hats.
aax and new beat win because they're the most "hi-hat" hi-hat sound and tone for me.
Same here..... A lot of these other unique styles of hats sound interesting, but won't too work well musically in a lot of contexts. Personally I love the new AAX stuff, maybe the cleanest-playing and most articulate set of hats I've ever tried, and no harsh tones.
The aax are very versatile. I love Sabian. I thought the Meinl "sand" hats had a rather cool sound.
You must like the higher pitch then, because they had the highest pitch, you should try 13" hats too. My friend had a set of 13" K's that sounded smooth like the K's do in this video but at a higher pitch, more like the As or AAX, you should try them!
horrible aax brilliant sound
Agree. Classic hi-hat sound.
Gorgeous playing, man! And gorgeous sounding kit, that's for sure!
I had Zildjian New Beats in the 70's, I sold my 9 pc Ludwig set when I went off to the Navy. I just bought a used 10 pc DW performance set after 42 years. The Pro I bought them from said he thought the vintage New Beats are still the best. I found a pair from the 70's & bought them, still love them! I am now in Heaven!
Excellent video guys! Playing the same groove over each pair was brilliant!
I have the a New Beats and the standard Ks. This was a great demo and shows how the A New Beats are the best all around high hats ever made, the others may sound better in niche applications, but the new beats rule for overall performance.
It’s hard to beat New Beats. The K Sweets, Sand Hats and Xist also stood out to me.
hard to beat for you. To me the Sabian AAX sounds the best.
@@Chriswasreigns Yep, those are good too!
New Beats are my favorite for their versatility, but they all sound good to me.
I was digging those sand hats. What a unique tone.
I have a pair of 15" xist hats. They absolutely cannot be beat for the price
Thanks a lot for the comparation and for sharing it with us. A big hug from Buenos Aires!
Great job on sampling hi hats, comes down to personal preference, I just bought a pair of used AAX's in good condition, and will be having my first jam in a couple of weeks after 30 years of retirement from drumming, scored a sonor 505 and a pearl export few days ago at a bargain price, can't wait
The Agop is interesting, but Istanbul´s biggest gem, to me, is the 14" Agop, Mel Lewis signature. These videos are invaluable!
Thanks for watching, Frank. Glad you find them useful!
Meinl sand hats were my favs, then both Istambul Agop, then sweet K, then (surprised because I thought they were too brilliant but actually they're not) the AAX and then the Meinl Classics Custom Dark.
I have the 14 inch Paiste Twenty's Series Hi-Hats and they sound great live and in the studio. Also a pair of Zildjan KZ's that are incredible!
Those Paiste Dark Hi-hats...wow! So mysterious and complex! Zildjian K Sweets also excellent.
Gonna have to go with the meinl sand and sabian legacy
Although the Paiste Signature and the Istanbul Agop 30th are really different in sound, I find it hard to decide which one I like more. The Zildjian A was like a blast from the past, it is just a classic sound. I still have ambivalent feelings towards to the K Sweet line (I love the K Mastersound though...amazing hi hats). I also quite liked Sabian Legacy. Meinl Classic was a surprise...for its price it did really well alongside the top tier cymbals.
Great comparison video! As in the crash cymbal comparison, my choice is the Paiste Signature. Crisp, clean and full sound!!
This is how you do a review! Great Job! The same pattern artfully played really allows for one to hear the hats in relation to the others. I've got a pair of Zildjian K Hi defs that I currently love, But there are some killer hats in this video! Ah, Decisions, Decisions!
Have to admit that the old standby Zildjian As sounded the best. Amazed, but true.
I mostly love the Zildjian 14" New Beat Hi-Hat because it's a really popular it crispy clear chick sound and it works with all styles of music and it definitely sounds awesome in the studio also too. Meinl sounds awesome too it has the simular as Zildjian sound
Thank's for the consistant playing, it helps a lot.
i bought my 14’ New Beats in 2009, and it still sounds great and tasteful😍
I think they all sound great.
Be nice to have all of them in my drum room.
K SWEET and HHX Legacy my personal pick. Very surprised by AAX and Signature Dark
All great. Love the HHX, Vintage Sand, and Agop 30th.
New beats never get old. Even damaged, they still play and sound great.
All things "Dark", and those Legacy..!
Love those HHX Legacy hats. People sleep on Sabian.
Those Agop 30th Anniversary hats are lovely also.
Legacy hats it's my favorite
I have always loved the Zildjian A series. I love B20 bronze cymbals. Those drums are awesome 😎
Extremely helpful thanks. God that snare cuts through!!
Congratulations for this great video.
With this cymbals, my favorites are:
1- Agop Xist Natural;
2- New beat;
3- Paiste Sig. Dark
4- Sabian AAX
Thanks for watching!
Yep.. that's the exact 4 that I liked. Good ear!
the meinl custom dark, and paiste sign dark crisp....
Those hats really suit my style. As well as the agop. Great video
I agree with you, my preference goes to the dark crisp, it has a little less high frequency, compare to the meinl custom dark, wich i like. But the Meinl custom dark is for me the second. Third place goes to the agop.
That meinyl one is sick
Paiste Signature Dark Crisp were my favourite, they sounded crisp & clean, didn't sound too high pitched when opened like some of the others, and also were punchy as evidenced by the final part of the groove you played where the hats are closed quickly after a hit. Very impressed by how consistent the groove was played across all of the hi-hats and also impressed by the correct grammar in asking which hats 'are' best for you as opposed to 'is' on the crash cymbal video!
Current desired hats for my dream-kit setup are the Paiste Signature Reflector which are similar to these Signature Darks but a bit more aggressive. I also really enjoyed the Sabian HHX Legacy in this video, and the Istanbul Agop Xist Natural was surprisingly good as I didn't really like the preceding 30th Anniversary ones. The Meinl Sand hats sounded great too, a lovely sound that's a bit trashy but controlled - I don't think I would like them as much for playing where the hi-hats are open constantly such as for rock/metal music as they sounded a little hissy played this way but for other styles where the hats are opened and closed more quickly they sounded like they would be fantastic.
New beats have been a favorite of mine since I started playing over 20 years ago. I love the K's too. Just now hearing the meinl dark though... I like those. These all have unique sounds. All comes down to the players preference I suppose.
Those Sabian AAXs sound very very close to my 14inch Zildjian A Customs.
1) Istanbul Agop Xist ...by far
2) Paiste Signature Dark crisp
3) Zildjian K sweet
Those K-Sweet's are definitely on my "to buy" list. WOW.
I just got a pair of AAX X - Celerator hats.
Had a jam and used them . They are awesome !
I came for the hi-hats but REALLY WANT THAT SNARE DRUM!
However, I still use my New Beats from '76 more often than all my other hats. They cut, sizzle and are responsive.
Yes! What snare drum is that!?
@@arielalvarado6007 That is the Dunnett Classic 2N Triple Brass Snare Drum 14x5.5.
I guess this reconfirms what my ear likes best and that is Zildjian! The sweet K’s then New beats for me.
I have the A new beat hi hats, I love those things.
I really liked those Paiste Signature Dark Crisp 14" sound.
Listened to this video without watching and knowing what brand each cymbals is. As I was listening I wrote down how much I like each hi hat on the scale of one to 10 in the comment. Here's the results
#1: 7/10 ( Zildjian new beat )
#2: 6/10 ( Zildjian K sweet )
#3: 6/10 ( Paiste formula )
#4: 10/10 ( Paiste Dark crisp )
#5: 5/10 ( Meinl Byzance Sand )
#6: 9/10 ( Meinl Classics Dark )
#7: 4/10 ( Istanbul Agop 30th anniversary )
#8: 6/10 ( Istanbul Agop Xist, I actually use this hi hat, it's weird to see I rated it a 6 )
#9: 10/10 ( Sabian AAX medium )
#10: 7/10 ( Sabian HHX legacy )
So, Paiste Signature Dark crisp and Sabian AAX sounded best to my ears, Closely fallowed by the Meinl Classics dark. Interesting results.
The Meini darks sounded pretty good - I was surprised to see they're only $200, which is like, entry level. They seemed very versatile.
I've always had either new beats, or an A/K top/bottom. This video is great.
I've met an endorser or two that use them, expensive is overrated.
Thank you very much man! I was looking for a hi hat and your video helped me a lot!
Thanks 🤘🤘
Love love love the meinl classic customs dark. Have the 22" crash/ride from that series, my favourite cymbal I own easily
dang those agops sit in the mix so well. very soft.
Paiste Signature then the Zildjian A Beats. I thought the Sabians sounded quite good as well.
The best sounding for me were the K Sweet, the Dark Crisp and the AAX. The Agop Xist and Custom Dark were pretty good too, amazing options considering their price range.
I'm using that groove for my next sound check! Love this channel!
Thanks for watching, Steven!
Wow, the Classics Custom really surprised me! But Paistes are unbeatable
16 and/or 17 custom combination video?? I recently put my own set of 17's together with an Artisan Crash (brilliant) on top and Crescent Classic (Natural ) on the bottom. Super smooth and plenty of attack when needed.
I play on the Xist hats and love them. They sound about perfect, but I am eager to also try the Meinl Custom Darks.
"Thank You" for the Hi-Hat Comparison Video. Technique spot on for what we need to catch all tonal levels...I purchased the Meinl Classic Custom Dark Expanded Pack before I saw this. Just got them today, they are dark and need some fine adjustments on pedal/clutch.
Istanbul Agop Xist "By far" best sustain and resonance. I'm Sold! Thanks for replying to email so quick. These are hard to find!
I liked the Instanbul Xist the Sand Hats and the HHX legacy hats
The "A"'s sound the way Hi Hats should sound. (At least with that beat).
Niiiiiice comparison!!!! Thank you so much! ...... I like certain aspects of each one of them. The New Beat seems to be the most balanced one with no downsides however. I'm probably gonna get a pair of 15".
I have the K sweet hats 15", though they have bigger projection, they're still so crisp. I'll love to try those paiste signature but my dream hats are the pair of meinl vintage sand hats. ❤
Sabian HHX Legacy! And Paiste Signature Dark Crisp!
Surprisingly, I liked both Meinl sets. The Custom Dark sound a little more all-round to me, but I really liked the Vintage Sand. (Still own my Pearl Wild 900 which I love.)
I'm a Paiste fanboy, but those hats are the Meinls I've liked the most since my old Rake's. The entire Grebb pack stands out.
That snare is incredible the punch the tone the look
