As a guitarist, all cymbals seemed somewhat the same to me. It is really interessting to hear some clear examples of where to use which cymbals. Perfect for writing drum parts. If you could do more of these videos with different cymbals, that would be awesome.
As I get older and more experienced as a drummer, I am enjoying adding more subtleties and different nuances to my playing to add so decided recently go out and buy a couplie of splashes this Saturday! This little video has been very helpful thanks. very much
I've been working like crazy on my open handed playing...left hand on the hats or keeping time. Just watching you play has motivated me to work even harder on it. Beautiful job on explaining how to use a splash, and stellar playing. You've just got me as a new subscriber.
Definitely the right way to incorporate a splash! (Granted, I know there is no "right or wrong" in musical terms) but this is a great tutorial for up and coming drummers. Nice playing mate! 🕶
Love splashes! I think Stewart Copeland made great use of a splash, but I really started getting into George Kollias. Turns out, he makes a pretty sick use of the cymbal too!
I love this video and agree with all the things you've said. If I might add a 4th way very similarly related to your #3, use it in place of a tom in your fill, much like your #3, but hit it more than once in a row. For example play an alternating stroke 16th note fill, 1-e-+-a on the snare, 2+e on the splash, +-a on tom 1, and on down through 3 and 4. Nice way to tease your drum kit and fake a 6 piece when you have a 5 piece. I'd love to hear Ben Minal's approach to this idea!
Hey, great video. I was just going to suggest something for your snare mic. Right now the microphone is hanging over the drum head. What this does is it allows the sound from the head to not only hit the front of the capsule, but also the back from the side vents. This means you are picking up and rejecting the same resonating head. You might get a better sound out of that mic if you backed it up so that the vents are not hanging over the snare head. Cheers from the US!
In Virtual Drumming I used to play the splashes just following my gut while listening drumless music like in videogames, and YEAH the only tip I knew by common sense was the first tip: Crash in the chorus/Splash in the verses. The other tips are awesome since they bring a lot of possibilities in the table!!!
great lesson! worth noting for those who don't own one: you can do most of these things with an open hihat too, doesn't sound as good but decent as well
I bought a cheapo 8" sr2 splash and put it inside my hihat. It adds a nice bit of high end and makes the hihat sound a bit fatter with the extra swish and sizzle!
Hey Ben, I've noticed that you play with an open hand style in this and other videos. Is that how you initially learned to play or did you have to practice that technique later in life?
Nice camera work man! I've been on UA-cam for a while but am inconstant with content because of work and other things. I do have a question however. What are your tips for camera quality/ editing soft wear. I feel like that's one of my weaknesses along with being inconsistent. Appreciate it man! Wishing the best always, cheers
Very well presented. Thanks for posting. (Pst... I apologize for being perhaps harsh or overly critical, but... ...that floor tom sounds like a piece of lumber hit with a rubber mallet)
Hey man, to me whenever you are playing to me it sounds like there is no reverb? You just play and it sounds like you are in a super tiny room with a crap load of dampening. Did you do this for simplicity and to show of the splash? I just want to make sure my headphones aren't dying on me or anything! ahaha

That splash is so crisp and quick! Perfection.

Always inspiring me to try new things; be it open handed drumming or this. Thank you dude
+R SAMs that's made my evening dude, thank you
Your teaching style works great on UA-cam, I know nothing about drums but I feel like I learn loads from all of your videos :)
+Huw Griffin that's awesome thanks Huw
Ben Minal thank you man! ordered my Toska Ode to the Author Blue ray pack last week, can't wait!
Surely the answer is simply 'hit it with a drum stick....' ?
haha.. pretty accurate!
Tesla Nick that's how I use mine.
Haha you got it!
No, that's not the only way. And, don't call me Shirley..
williiamm23 Sup Shirley XD
Love splashes! I think Stewart Copeland made great use of a splash, but I really started getting into George Kollias. Turns out, he makes a pretty sick use of the cymbal too!
finally an open hand drummer!!! thank you for bringing some representation to our breed!!!
How do open hand drummers play the ride cymbal, isn't it hard to switch hands on the snare when you switch from a hi hat groove to one with the ride
Check out Simon Phillips
@@trutuf2785 many of us just move the ride over to our left
Would love to see more of these kind of vids, really great :) that's splash sounds great too!
+Declan Graham more on the way!
Awesome! Just added a splash and playing with some of those grooves. Thanks!
Another great, clear, matter-of-fact tutorial. Thanks.
I love your open handed technique on the hi hat
Thanks so much! I just got a splash and was wondering what I could use it for
I know a drummer who uses it before changing from hi-hats to crash. So For about 2 measures she uses it like hi-hats. Pretty cool little cymbals.

Awesome lesson, and awesome playing and sound. Thanks !

+venkatesh Batni awesome thanks for the tip I'll try this next time!

Yesterday I get my new splash and I'm here ;) thanks for introducing me into this topic
I thought his last name was Meinl at first glance lmao
Check out Manu Katche as well. The splashmaster!
great lesson! worth noting for those who don't own one: you can do most of these things with an open hihat too, doesn't sound as good but decent as well
True!
And the ride bell as well!
Good grooves and tips. Thanks, mate.
Very helpful ideas!!! Well done.
Thanks, I got my splash cymbal for my 15 birthday, and I didn't have any ideas what the appropriate time it was to use in.
I bought a cheapo 8" sr2 splash and put it inside my hihat. It adds a nice bit of high end and makes the hihat sound a bit fatter with the extra swish and sizzle!
Interesting, I'll have to try that
Ben Minal I can only imagine it sounds at least a thousand times better with an aero splash and artisan hats😍
This is my favorite hair style out all the hairstyles I’ve seen you with. Nice!
Oh ya.. and great job on the drums of course. 🤘🏽😁
omg this has helped me sm thank you
#benforpresident cause im in america and we need some EXCITEMENT AND WISDOM
Haha
Hi Ben, will china and stack playing follow the same "rules" as for splash playing?
Thanks
really cool man, gives some ideas for new fills, you shuld do this on other cymbals, like for example a china, as well!!! cheers
How about cowbells?
THANK UUU
Wow, snowden is an amazing drummer!! :P
love your hats man!
from what series are they?
This is amazing!! What splash are you using?
It's 11:26pm and Im watching a British guy teaching us how to hit a piece of metal with a piece of wood

What is that cymbal you have with the bell on top?
After getting that Aero Splash cymbal , I guess you are too rocked out . But this lesson is good ! I can use it . Thanks !
Hey what are the hats in this video? HHX? Can't really see any logo, love em though!
Cool coloured skins! What are those?
What's that cymbal with the upside-down bell on it?
+Flare Ruscitti that's a Sabian 22" HH Thin
Ben Minal Cool. Thanks
Cool! Thanks for the lesson :)
Everyone giving those tom's shit, I think they sound pretty great
great! this is good..
Why are there holes in it? Does that make them cheaper?
+Zycho it gives them a shorter decay and therefore gets out the way of the music a bit quicker
Why don’t you use menial?
Listen to albums by The Police, Stewart Copeland has many examples
Sometimes I just like to play videos at half speed just for fun!
i broke my splash now what
really like this kid of vid ben ;)
Very well presented. Thanks for posting.
(Pst... I apologize for being perhaps harsh or overly critical, but...

Hey parts stack Ride cymbal stack a splash
Is anyone else thinking those are solid grooves but also wondering which Harry Potter movie this is
Is this the 8" or 10"?
Hey there, it's the 8"
You can ride a splash also.
His voice kinda sounds like Daniel Radcliffe
You hold your drumsticks at like the very end of the stick. Unusual but whatever floats your boat.
Sometimes they slip down but I generally try to hold them higher up than the very end. You must have caught me at a moment of slack technique haha
oh okay haha. Good drumming though. \m/
Very progressive rock sound
I tried to focus on what he was saying, but his face just looks so much like Justin roiland it’s hard to concentrate 🤣🤣
costs more for less splash
Are you left handed?
No he's right footed
I swear it doesn't matter when playing the drums
Awesome instructional! But your toms sound like card board
you gotta get better lighting for your video
tasty
It pissed me off that you don't get as many views as Bea or Chappers.
And subd
+Damien Bailey welcome to the channel dude!
Everything sounds tight and choked, or am I the only one that hears that? Or is it like that for a reason?
+Jordan Bruce not sure what you mean - can you explain some more?

Over complicating simple things.
