- Star Trek: The Experience Las Vegas Construction Behind the Scenes B-roll.
Paramount Pictures, Paramount Parks, Landmark Entertainment and CBS come together at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas in 1997 to create Star Trek: The Experience, an immersive attraction unlike any other. This is raw, behind-the-scenes video featuring some of its creators and a tour of the facility while under construction and testing.
I must have went on this ride 15 times in one night when I was a kid. The transporter effect still amazes me to this day, walking onto the bridge every time was an awesome experience. I wish it was still around. Great job to all that built this, some great memories!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed. It was a special experience for all of us. :)
Wow, what I'd pay to have been able to go. I was around then, but didn't live in Vegas and was younger. I got to visit the bar after the experience had shut down. The level of effort that went into it with people who seemed like actual fans is amazing.
@@devosentertainment Absolutely, top 10 memories of all time
@@devosentertainment is there footage somewhere of how the transporter effect played out in real time in real life from the perspective of a passenger?
@@Wonderboywonderings great question! I may have some old vhs somewhere of this…we never shot it with a live audience as we didn’t want to interfere with the guest experience. I’ll post it if I find it!
I came to Vegas back in 05 with a group of friends and I went off by myself specifically to do the whole Experience. I was literally there from open till close that day and was just in heaven. I remember saving up almost a thousand bucks just to blow on whatever I wanted and I did. Wish it was still open today.
What a great memory!
I was the first female Klingon to work at the attraction, before Lynn. I will never forget the thrill of each and every aspect of this Experience. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Awesome!
As part of the installation crew and original cast, this really takes me back. Still one of the coolest attractions ever, and the transporter effect might be my all-time favorite. Thanks so much for sharing!
My pleasure!
This was the most amazing ride or attraction Las Vegas ever had. Thanks for making excellent unforgettable memories for myself and my boyfriend!!
Even to this day it’s one of the most magical experiences I’ve had. Thank you to you and your friends for such an amazing time in the future.
You’re welcome! 😎👍 it was truly our pleasure. Really a special time in all of our careers.
God I miss this. It was, hands down, the best thing about living in Vegas
Agreed!
Such an incredible attraction. Artistry and technology made real magic.
Thank you. Glad you got to experience it!
So cool to see this again - i remember all of us putting all that together. That was great times Dave.
Such great memories. Let’s do it again Luc!
Been there twice, thanks guys for the extremely cool experience. I noticed that between my first and second visit (three years apart) the transporter effect was slightly changed, am I right?
@@robertopreatoni what did you notice that was different?
@@devosentertainment the lights effects to me seemed different. At least the whole thing it wasn't as I remembered.
Easily one of the most memorable experiences of my life! Thank you all for the magic you made and the hard work in that entire attraction.
Even though I knew the "transporter effect" was coming, you guys fooled me in how you brought it about. As someone that does alot of amusement parks, this was the best. The only "ride" I ever enjoyed waiting in line for as much as the event itself. A couple weeks later I flew back with my wife just so she could experience this, thank you!
Right on! So glad you enjoyed. We appreciate your feedback. The whole team worked super hard to make it the best experience for fans, so your gracious words mean a lot. LLAP!
I'm so glad I got a chance to do this back in the day. It amazes me how much production went into this experience. I wish it was still there so I could take my kids. So awesome!
Glad you got to see it. It was fun to make!
I went in 06 and it was great, It was incredibly well done, just as good as some of the motion rides being done today. I remember being surprised by how small the bridge really was, this being an exact scale replica. Even here it looks gigantic on TV but being there that's the first thing that hit me. I still have my picture in the Captains chair, I look stuffed into the chair and at the time I was in pretty decent shape...
It’s amazing how TV makes everything look bigger!
Amazing to see how the transporter effect worked!
Truly a design and engineering marvel!
I was wondering how you came by all this wonderful footage, and then I realized that your name is on the slate, in the Klingon BTS footage! You're the director!
My thanks to you, and everyone who worked on this project! I used to visit The Experience every time I went to Las Vegas (once or twice a year), and I loved it! I still talk people's ears off about how magical the whole thing was.
Thanks a bunch for sharing this footage! It is great to get a glimpse into all the hard work that went into creating this amazing attraction.
So glad you had such wonderful memories of the Experience. It was truly our pleasure to bring to life!
I went to a Star Trek escape room recently, and man I wish there was still something like this in existence
Me too!
I visited in 1998, first trip to the US, one of my favourite memories, I got to stand on the bridge of the Enterprise D! Brilliant!
So cool!
I miss this so so much. I felt like I was really a part of Star Trek on the Enterprise when I visited. Thank you for this awesome video!!
It was truly an immersive experience. One of the best ever. So glad you enjoyed!
First thank you for posting this, as a truck driver I've driven all over the country and I've never wanted to stop and see anything except this experience. I would have paid double the amount of money to go in and see it that's how much it was incredible. I just wish that someone had the entire thing on video and would post it. I keep telling my family about it and it's so sad that they'll never experience it
My pleasure! We had a blast building it. Have you seen the video of the bridge film shoot as well?
Not yet but I will thanks
That transporter effect. Seriously the best illusion ever. I was totally fooled. I mean I know it must have been something like that, but that's some seriously cool engineering.
Indeed! Some very talented people working out some massive physics challenges.
@@devosentertainment I went a few times. Always had to stop there. I had searched for years to see how this was done, no luck, I read explanations, but needed to see it in action to understand. I also figured it was something similar to Disneys Haunted Mansion, with that you went down, this I didn't feel movement, now it makes sense. Thank you so much.
I had read this is all in storage, and they were trying to bring it back, any idea if we will ever see this again?
@@mikecarter8880 one can always hope, but I’m not holding my breath. Most of the attraction was dismantled and sold at auction.
@@devosentertainment Thanks for the reply. Eeesh what a loss and really saddening. Did you by chance ever go to Cars Of The Stars in the 70s/80s in Buena Park? For some reason I had that feeling there, just amazement.
@@mikecarter8880 No, never did. Sounds fun!
This is incredible footage. Thank you for uploading this. The Star Trek experience was always the best thing for me whenever I went to Vegas.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much for this ! I got to go on Star Trek: The Experience once and loved it. Don't live in Vegas so by the time I went back it was gone. Miss it so much.😥
Glad you enjoyed!
25 years later and nothing has come close the the experience of being seemingly beamed up. I am so happy that I got to experience this back in 1998 and to bring my Mom there a year later. She still talks about this experience and how cool it all was. Thank you for sharing this. It sort of diminishes the magic but it is so cool to finally see how it was accomplished.
Glad you have such great memories! It will always be magic.
Had a great time going on this back in 2003. Many thanks to you and your crew for building such a fun attraction!
You’re welcome! We had a blast building it. So many cool challenges.
I remember spending half days at the ST Experience every time I would visit Vegas. I miss this. Thanks for posting!
My pleasure. We had such a blast building it. Great memories for all.
In November 1998, I was working for Ziff Davis Publishing and working in Las Vegas in our booth at Comdex. I rode the Star Trek: Experience with the rest of our team and was literally blown away by the Transporter effect.
I had no idea it was coming, figuring we were just doing the standard queue for a ride like Back to the Future at Universal. It seemed so similar, stand on the lighted dots, watch the monitors, stand back because the door opened outward.
UNTIL THE VIDEO FAILED AND THE LIGHTS WENT OUT. WTF was happening? We really believed we were caught in a malfunction. And then BOOM, we’re in a much larger transporter room on the bridge of the real Starship Enterprise, flying through space.
I have been waiting for 23 years to learn how it was done because it was truly an unforgettable experience.
Now, thanks to this video, I finally got the whole true story about exactly how it worked. Based on the blast of air feeling like it was coming from our right side, my co-workers and I believed the room somehow rotated, with some of the side walls moving up.
But we were only guessing and no one who knew was talking. But I will never forget that experience because it seemed so real (even though I knew that tele-transportaion didn't really exist).
Thank you for showing me this . . . The methods used were even more amazing than I imagined, and it executed perfectly. Only rode it once. By the end of 1998, I was recruited to work for Dun & Bradstreet and never came back to Comdex again. By the time I next visited Las Vegas in 2009, the ride was history.
Wow! What a great memory. Thank you for sharing. It’s always fun to hear about people’s experience with the attraction. We had a great team with great vision. I was happy to be a part of it.
I had a chance to go one time. Standing on the bridge of the Enterprise was truly a childhood fantasy. Then I remember that my parents and I got some pretty tasty food a Quarks. There was a mean-looking Klingon around as well. I really wish this was still around so I can take my kids to it. Thank you for sharing the video.
Glad you have such good memories. We miss it too.
We were watching the Disney+ Behind the Attraction series and I mentioned to my GF that while the Disney theme parks were always fun and special nothing held a candle to the transporter effect of this Star Trek Experience. I told her how I couldn't forget the first time I was "transported" and how magical it was.
Watching this with her not only brought back those great memories but gave me an immense respect to the technical prowess behind this ride. So awesome.
So great! Thanks for such nice feedback. So glad we could provide such a memorable experience.
The fact I didn't experience this just grinds my biscuit
Nothing worse than a ground biscuit. Sorry Joe!
I visited the Experience once while it was open, and had no idea the “transporter effect” was coming. My family was dumbfounded. It was pure magic.
Seeing how it was pulled off did not spoil it for me whatsoever. It gave me greater admiration of the designers and engineers. Not only did the effect have to be convincing, but repeatable many times a day without time consuming and profit losing breakdowns.
So glad it made such an impression. A truly magical effect. My favorite part of the attraction for sure. It was fun to be a part of such a ground breaking project. Thanks for your response!
I think it was that you didn't move, your surrounding did and the air that impressed me. I didn't notice the air till seeing this video, we never saw air blowing on them with the transporter in the series, but it totally sells it. Thank you so much, my life is now complete.
All that wind was an unexpected (but welcome) side effect of all that mass moving up so quickly and forming a vacuum. Pretty cool!
Thank you so much for this! I went closing day and this brought back so many great memories. As someone who has worked in both theater and theme parks It is wonderful to finally see behind the scenes footage of this amazing attraction.
You’re welcome! We had an amazing time building it. Make sure to check out the filming bts too!
Went there in Summer 1998. What a great look that place had. The makeup on the Ferengi and the decor and the uniforms were all great.
Wish I remembered the ride part better. I was burned out after a month of hard work on a project.
I still have my oversized Quarks mug that I bought at the gift shop. It has one of the Rules of Aquisition on it- "Never begin negotiations on an empty stomach".
Glad you got to experience it!
Thank you for sharing this - I remember being blown away by the "transporter" when I visited Vegas, and now seeing how it was created is amazing!
Amazing, right? Took a MASSIVE amount of counter weight moving at ridiculous speeds to pull that off. 😎
This was my experience too, usually I don't fall for the "magic" in attractions. This one blew my socks off. I only got to experience it once, so sad it's gone. I was just trying to explain how it felt to my son. haha.
@@travisjdesigns wish you could take him back in time!
I really wish I could’ve experienced this. I moved to Vegas in 2006 and I didn’t know about this place until it was too late. Thanks for the videos!
My pleasure! Check out the Bridge shoot bts too!
This was such an amazing experience. To say this was Disney Level would be to short change this event. The actors were amazing. The sets were on-point. I felt like I was literally in the Star Trek universe. One of my trips, I even was in my Star Trek uniform and did the bridge photo of me in the Captain's chair. The best part was a few of the actors integrated my being in uniform as part of their dialogue... so you know it wasn't a completely rote performance being done for each showing. So many people are missing out on such a great show, especially with the resurgence of Trek shows. It is a shame that it only lasted 10 years. I believe I saw a recent video of someone getting into an area where the promenade was and it was still there... unused.
That’s super cool that you had a bespoke experience. How fun!
Thanks for posting this Dave, I have great memories of our STTE team!
The best! I miss those days.
Hope you’re well!!
It's sad getting to see this now and being unable to experience it in person.
Maybe one day we can get another experience like this.
That would be awesome
The attraction was a pure magic. Thank you for this wonderful video Dave!
Glad you enjoyed! We had a blast creating the attraction. :)
I miss it so much! Thanks for that great behind-the-scenes look at its construction! I still wish the LVH had done a much better job marketing it, because even living here in Las Vegas and working for a casino corporation (Mirage Resorts at the time), I barely saw any ads for it.
I totally agree! Glad you were able to experience it though!
This is amazing seeing this! WOW.
What a time for all of us. Let’s do another!
I'm so, so glad I got to experience this (and the Borg version) in 2005 before it was decommissioned. What an absolutely incredible piece of theater. I was completely bamboozled by the transporter effect at the start, and then just remained astounded from then on. If only they would bring it back!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@devosentertainment I hope you won't mind a question. Why was there a full keyboard and mixer and so on sitting on the bridge set? I would have assumed all the music cues and such would be recorded elsewhere and then brought in on tape. Were some of them recorded on set for some reason?
@@IntermissionNovel We created all the soundtracks off site but then brought in the gear to mix it all in the actual space. James Fielden made sure that everything was sonically perfect. Think of it like mixing a movie in the only theater where it will be seen. We were able to tweak it just right!
@@devosentertainment Fascinating! Thank you for your response!
I can't believe they took it down, was one of the craziest most immersive things I've ever experienced. From quarks, to the queue, it felt like a museum, then the transporter felt so real, there wasn't a ton of internet on this so nobody knew what to expect, it was really cool, shuttle ride, everything
I’m so glad you go to enjoy it!
I miss this so much, I made a whole video about it. (along with a bunch of the other cool Vegas attractions that are sadly no longer there.) I really hope the success of Galaxy’s Edge is the push Viacom needs to look at resurrecting this, because it was so ahead of its’ time. Thanks so much for sharing!
Would love to see your video!

@@SunnylandProds so fun! Did you see our making of Galaxy’s Edge TV special? You can find it on Hulu.
Dave de Vos I’ll have to watch that!
Yeah... about that...
Priceless footage! This "transporter" effect is better than Rise of the Resistance's turntable effect. It blows me away that this was over 20 years ago. It was WAY ahead of its time.
Indeed. And an engineering marvel. Some great minds behind the attraction!
@@devosentertainment At the time Scenic Technologies was producing some innovated ideas for attractions. I joined the company's Las Vegas office in '96 and worked on the experience (flying room frame with doors in AutoCAD 13, drawn in 3d, hung the bride with threaded rods and some of the corridor aesthetics leading to the bridge). Enjoyed the premier but didn't realize the effect it would have over time on the imaginations of so many people. If you can get access to the original drawings, Paramount on the title block, I will be under drawn by: JBK.
Also worked on T2-3D screens and spent time in the New Windsor, NY office working on Copperfield's magic underground.
Thanks for sharing, brings back fond memories for a designer who enjoyed the time spent helping to create something enjoyed by so many people.
I wish I could’ve experienced that 👏
You woulda loved it!
Dude. Thanks for posting this. :)
So many great memories!
Thank you !!
You’re welcome!
Devastated that I never got to go. I was in Vegas in May 2009 and was so excited to visit the Experience... only to realize it had permanently closed 8 months prior :(
Bummer!
Amazing footage; thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome! Glad you enjoyed. Did you ever get to visit?
I've only ever heard stories from Mark Thomas about this. So cool to see great video of it!
Tell Mark I said hey
thank you for upload this, I only had one trip to there then they closed .... they should revive this project again, I'll be really enjoy to go there every year ....
It would make a lot of people very happy 🖖🏻
I've ridden and experienced many attractions over the years at many amusement venues, but the transporter, turbolift and bridge sets were by far the most immersive and impressive experiences I've ever encountered in an entertainment venue. The transporter effect was both particularly impressive and staggering in its outcome. When the lights come up and you're standing in a transporter room after having been in that tiny blue room moments before, that effect was truly professional and well done. That rush of air fully sells the effect, even though I believe it was not originally intended.
The only portion I would like to have been seen dressed better were the exit signs and that rather generic office building hallway when transitioning to the shuttle, which ruined the immersion of still being on board a Starship. That and the rather rough shuttle motion simulator itself, which felt like a cheesy ride you could find at a carnival. Though, the Quark's bar area remained so fully immersive and impressive, it felt just like being on DS9. It's too bad the transition from the shuttle to the DS9 area hadn't been planned more seamlessly... as though the shuttle had accidentally been diverted to DS9 as one final story "twist" before existing the attraction.
The weakest portions were the transition to the shuttle area and the rather contrived "Picard heir" narrative, which felt shoehorned into place. Not exactly sure what happened there.
👍
Should make one tweak to your title and change it to "B-roll". Looks weird as "Broll". Thanks for sharing the entertaining BtS video. Love to see these.
Corrected. ;)
thanks for explaining that effect in min 10:10 finally to me which wowed me so many years ago! :-)

Absolutely amazing footage! I was lucky enough to visit myself and still have an NX-01 hat from the gift shop. Would you happen to remember the name of the audio designer on the bridge? I couldn't quite make it out from the video. James ... something?
James Fielden. A master of immersive audio design and a super nice guy.
@@devosentertainment Thanks!
Even my daughter (25 years old at the time) was floored by it and she really only had a passing interest in Star trek. Too bad it cant be recreated somewhere else with updated tech.

For the low low price of $80m in 1995 dollars!
Looks like they should have hired you over at Disney for the starwars hotel
Thanks!
Unbelievable video. Holy shit. I went here once in 2001. Wish I did it more times!! Will never be anything like it.
Glad you got to see it!
How do people work around that much noise?
We got used to it
Disney doesn't have anything on that transporter effect
Agreed!
So annoyed that I never got to do this 😔
Aw man. Bummer!
Should have created: Star Trek the strip club !!!!!
Ha!
Really wish they hadn't blown the money on the Voyager expansion and instead spent those resources updating the quality of the original. The Voyager one had some cool concepts, but a giant screen shuttle craft? It could have been executed better.
Sacking the Promenade upper level for "The Captain's table" was also a stupid idea. The point of Trek is NOT to treat anyone more special than others and obviously milking disinterested fat cats didn't pay off in the long run.
So many gyrations with management guessing what would bring in the money. Ultimately, it seems not any one thing was enough given the nature of Vegas itself shunning the attempt at being family friendly with attractions like this. Alas.
@@devosentertainment Thanks for the insight. I know it seems pointless to discuss, but even still there seems to be an obvious disconnect between show executives and fans. And this applies to multiple properties, not just Trek. The start of the Voyager ride was good for the most part until the phaser fire (or rather lack thereof) began... and then it just snowballed from there. I mean a giant screen shuttlecraft? How did that make it off the pitch meeting room floor? And not to mention it's the exact formula the TNG ride uses. People start ride, things go horribly wrong, attempt escape on shuttlecraft. It seems the focus was wowing fans with new technology. The problem is the average Trek fan isn't won over by such. It's about the substance and that one lacked some. The TNG ride was good cause the premise was more or less believable.
The Captain's table was probably the biggest mistake. Trekkies aren't exactly loaded typically and the ones that are who believe in the Trek philosophy aren't ones to flaunt and spend it on such frivolous things. There are of course exceptions to the rule, but ultimately Trek fans agree that there's more to life than wealth acquisition. They should have instead expanded the upper promenade deck into something functional with other nuances.
It also doesn't help that Enterprise had been off the air for three years prior, of course that show also had a disconnect with the fanbase when it tried to be so different right out of the gate to appeal to other audiences. Taking Star Trek out of the title was the biggest mistake followed by that theme song. I've come around to Faith of the Heart myself, specifically the Season 3-4 version, but S1 should have been an instrumental piece with the lyrics added in S2. I ended up loving the show when it was in syndication, but so many early mistakes were made that could have been easily avoided and I think those two things alone being different would have made a world of difference.
Anyway, I could go on as you can see. I say these in the hopes that the right people see them and maybe take them into consideration. At the very least maybe an up and coming exec will see this and take it to heart for whatever show or series or even attraction they are running and decide to appeal to the fans first. It's fine to want to try and bring in a wider audience, but as we have seen it's not worth sacrificing your core fan base. I hope one day this ride can be resurrected and of course updated with newer graphics to the original and have the Voyager one retooled into something different altogether, but right now I doubt that is going to happen any time soon unless Paramount pulls off a miracle or sells the property to a group that CAN make it successful. I'll continue to cherish the memories and again, thank you for sharing this... going through the transporter is one of my favorite childhood memories. I'm just sad I can't share the moment with anyone else... maybe a digital recreation is in order... I mean I don't know if you play STO, but looking at the recreations of the Galaxy bridge and Deep Space Nine are worth looking into.
