So sorry for my mistake and for the loss of your brother. I have been going steadily blind for some time now with cataracts and had assumed from when I saw your late brother live at The Rainbow Threatre with my first wife to be, who has also since passed on in 2017, that Tony Smith was on drums because he had played on John McLaughlin's Electric Guitarist album along with Fernando Saunders, who I also incorrectly identified at the gig I attended, and was in fact, T M Stevens. I particularly remember during your late brother's drum solo that he changed the snare drum for another whilst soloing and I had never ever seen that done before and was very impressed with what I saw and heard. I absolutely agree that your brother was an incredible drummer and spectacular live and had a particularly impressive snare drum technique too and I am so happy that I was able to see him live just once in my life.
@@wannabuyabuppy Thank you Howard for your kind words!! I was blessed growing up to see my brother practice in our garage and see him perform with all the Master musicians Sonship played with. I remember when I saw him play with John McLaughlin at the Pasadena Civic Center in the late 70's. Sonship did a solo and the audience went wild!!
John’s playing is so unique. I love the pauses, the lightning fast runs, bends, funky rhythms, dissonance and dynamics. TM on the bass is incredible too
I.was fortunate to see the One Truth Band Oct 1st, 1978 at The Dr Pepper Music Festival. 2 months later Shankar was with Zappa. Until that time I had never seen anything as such. 1,000 plus.shows later One Truth and Zappa 78' remain a spiritual awakening of live entertainment.
I saw Woodrow "Sonship" Theus with John in the summer of 1978. I've been looking for anything, audio, visual recordings. So little seems to be available about "Sonship". Cobham, Walden, are great to be sure, but this grouping of John, and Woodrow exploded on stage, I can still see it in My mind. Anything that can be posted with "Sonship" needs to be required experience for all drummers. Never have I witnessed such intensity, before or since. So glad to find this. Anything, and I repeat, anything about this great overlooked percussionist would be so welcome. To his sister Loretta, thank You. This has made My year. I hope more is to come.
I got to see/hear Sonship with the original One Truth Band in NYC before the album came out. It still stands as one of the most incredible musical experiences I've ever had. To me, this band was superior to Mahavishnu. Sonship is on the One Truth disc on the JM box set - also on Mcoy Tyner's "The Greeting".
The One Truth Band-- speaks truth, with their instruments. 'Electric Guitarist', and 'Electric Dreams' are maybe my favorite John McLaughlin records. His playing is a little more blues based; nice phrasing and vibrato- incredible and beautiful. L. Shankar (!) is a big plus. With their work in Shakti, here going Electric together. So good; complimenting each other. Then Stu is amazing; no loss without Jan Hammer. Fernando Saunders extraordinaire. Tony Smith, another powerful as well as intricate drummer. All around, and with great material. An outstanding group. Wish they had gone a little longer. But UA-cam comes through as usual! Gratitude 🙏
Great clip! At 5:49 though, the most excellent KB player of his time starts blazing solo - cameraman shows bassist and drummer's foot. Stu Goldberg is totally underrated.
@@daleford9606 Mouzon, Cobham, Narada, Gerry Brown and Simon Phillips all had their moments, especially when playing at fairly high tempos. Not to take away from their brilliance, though. It's natural to speed up when the adrenalin is flowing and the band is on fire.
Matt Phillips , that’s my point. Is it about the quality of musicians, or the fact that tempos increase when the band is in full flow, regardless of genre or musicianship? 🤔
@@monsterjazzlicks nice guy too- never forgot seeing him live and years later, at the dawn of ebay, bought a synth off of him. We spoke on the phone, he was a great person, pleased that I liked his playing.
Haha - The quasi-quoting of "Sylvia" ( Focus) in the end is priceless. This gig was probably in the Netherlands and they may have thought; lets pay tribute to this great dutch band with a little build-in reference. :-)
Ok - I see now that this was at the Montreux Jazz Festival of -78 at which Jan Akkerman ( whom left Focus in -78) also had several appearances. Maybe he was in the audience that night ? The quotation is definitely there....
I played/toured with TM between 2012-2014. Easily the best bassist I ever played with. Funny to see him here looking like Mod Sqaud LOL! (And he used to say he had that Mod Squad look too, so don't get "offended")
Nothing is mentioned about "Transcending Sunship , the drummer during the early days of the ONE TRUTH BAND I was the drum roadie and lighting engineer. The rig took me two and a half hours to put it together the first time... got it down to 45". Five Faiths, yet one Religion, that being MUSIC.
This The One Truth Band fronted by John McLaughlin featuring Fernando Saunders on bass and Tony Smith on drums. I saw these live at The Rainbow Theatre in London around this time.
Nice to watch someone pray on their instrument. I like this era of John. I don t think he picked up an electric for four years before this . Stu Goldberg...Jan Hammer on steroids. If thats possible? Crack band as always!
mavishnuJOHN , superb guitarist ; but it sounds like nobody told him about ; echo -delay etc ... latest tears he discovered Chorus ... but still with the same dry in your face sound ! too bad, the fine art of using echo , reverbs and delays swwms to have misses him
John was my God at the time. Then, I realized that he compensated his lack of melodic ideas, in his solos, by playing always fast... Nevertheless, I still appreciate the energy, the spirituality he had in his playing...
On Drums is my Late Great Brother Woody "Sonship" Theus!!! The Baddest Drummer to Hit Planet Earth
He sure was. I saw this tour at Berklee school of music. Woody was mid blowing

With the great late Sonship Woody Theus on drums.
He's cool but he also has that curse of almost all '70s fusion drummers - he speeds up. Alot.
Who else in your opinion, speeds up? And why do you think it’s confined to drummers (some of the greatest talent in the world) in this genre?

Stu Goldberg is a helluva' player! I have only heard him in the "One Truth Band".
stu recorded with john mc, alphonse mouzon, fowler brothers and wayne shorter
I came here to say this. I never realized it wasn’t Jan on Inner Worlds. Stu is awesome! 👏👏
He had a solo release with Coryell on acoustic and Dr L Subraminuim. Probably a copy on yt. Saw him live with One Truth- terrific

that is tm stevens and sunship in this performance..sunship always had his cymbals upside down..
