Johnathan I tested some of my athletes on certain lifts and compared the results to their jumping and running numbers. It really opens my eyes in some ways.. What I found was the some athletes really lack in power but they could run a fast 400. It's really about specific strength.

Jonathan Edwards trained like that. He had been running distances of more than 100 meters rarely. As I saw from the Carl Johnson article about his training, he ran 30m in about 3.65 sec and even as low as 3.54-3.59 that is ELITE sprinter's times (and even not many elite sprinters could show such numbers). Very strength based, looking that he squatted 230kg (like about 3x times of his BW), but I see that in last 2 seasons in article he dropped out squats from schedule (for some reasons - enough max strength, going minimise and getting rid of less necessary training means which load CNS and affect recovery time but give no more benefits, left and focused only on two exercises: power developing with cleans and snatches mostly. Would be interesting to know is that has been enough to maintain that 230kg numbers in squat (enough to maintain that level of Max strength) or how much of pure max strength in quads and glutes (squats) he lost and how numbers have changed.
In some USSR book or magazine article I saw the yearly volumes of different training means for LJ, and I didn't expected to see that actual jumping were around 400-500 (or 500-600) jumps per year, about that (can give you exact numbers, need to re-check or even send you the source completely to have a look), I don't know is that many or not, what is yours yearly volume range?
