Shark Week Challenge!

- Do you remember that first thing that you loved to draw over and over as a kid? Well I sure as hell do - SHARKS. I filled sketchbooks with them, I even traced the shape of sharks off of the TV during (you guessed it) Discover channel's SHARK WEEK.
In honor of those humble art nerd beginnings AND the most awesome week on TV, let's kick off the DPS Shark Week challenge. Simply draw or paint the coolest shark you can come up with. Make it weird, make it scary, make it cute - whatever floats your (gonna need a bigger) boat.
Join the DPS discord to enter and for contest details! / discord

For me, it was drawing dragons 🐉 It was about the only good thing I could draw😊
I think you're really going to love our next challenge 😏
very nice technic to make light rays i'll remember that one
Cool! I love those. Instant drama :)
I think it was just animals in general for me. But I for sure remember having a lot of "how to draw dragons" books when I first started drawing. I pretty much followed every tutorial multiple times in each of those books. Now that I think about it though, I feel like it's rare for me to draw dragons these days
I remember those step by step books. I had one called Draw 50 monsters that I really loved.
This channel is changing my life 🙏
That's awesome! Thanks :)
Oh wowwww, i am always inspired by machinery and animals. well, as i am working on painting machines currently, i am too excited to take part in this challenge. My childhood first character was a disney character goofy, and i drew alot of Disney's comics in my childhood.
Hi Ruchika - machine/animals are always a fun way to reskin and mashup. Glad to hear from you :)
I love this challenge
Awesome! Welcome.
Oh yeah, once I saw Jaws, I was obsessed with Sharks! I had Great White Shark toys, and would draw different Sharks all over my homework as a kid...and Ninja Turtles 😂
JAWS - I must have watched it a thousand times. I remember the VHS tape - I drew sharks all over the label :) Awesome
You must have loved "Street Sharks" as a kid then.
Hard to believe, but they totally passed me by. I think I must have moved onto other obsessions by that point :)
Hey hardy any news if you’re going to be doing any portfolio reviews again? The last one was great!
Those are definitely going to happen again. Working out the fall schedule now and we'll definitely do that. Up next we're going to have some real industry art directors on the channel for live Q&A - I hope to announce the date soon. Great to hear that you're up for more portfolio review after that.
This is going to be really fun!
You know it! I just saw your entry - really cool!
Super high-level as always! So cool to leave the history feeding live so we can also check what is being done there! If I may ask a question, which tablet do you use (as I saw in another video you does not seem to be drawing on a screen like on a Cintiq) and which resolution is the screen we see on the video? Thanks!
Thanks! Glad you liked it. Sure - I use a Wacom Intuos Pro. I switched last year from an Intuos 3 which I had used for 12 years prior! That thing was a beast and still works perfectly! My screen specs: 27-inch (5120 × 2880)
I missed the Squad challenge but ill hop up in for this one :) The thing i used to draw the most as a Kid were Angels
That's awesome. I hope you still draw an angel from time to time.
After seeing the last challenge met I cannot WAIT to see what people come up with for this !!!
Me too - creativity has been off the charts.
Wow you just unlocked a memory! I did the same thing and traced cartoon network characters pausing a frame on the tv box. I think I still have them somewhere... I did all of my favourites...Ed Edd n Eddy, Courage Dog and Dexter haha
I love it. I remember pausing the VCR at just the right moment - it took expert timing :)
Film Jaws absolutely got me into Great White sharks and a few others like tiger/bull. But sharks in general were my favourite when visiting aquariums as a kid, used to buy books and watch shark docs when available. Always liked the larger more gentle giants... whale and basking sharks.
I LOVED Jaws :) and I totally agree, those huge, yet harmless species of sharks are utterly fascinating.
@@fowlerillus yea we have Basking sharks regularly visiting off the coast here. Can't appreciate the size until you see it at a distance with a surfer paddle boarding next to one taking pics hah. Everyone else was on the beach... Just like JAWS lol. It was getting on for about 30+ feet though. I'd probably exit the water too if all I saw was a shark fin.
what size canvas do you usually use for your pieces? I always assume 4k resolution, so the brushes don't become pixilated when doing small details/
I definitely record these in 4K so that the videos are crisp. My canvas is usually around 16x9 inches at 300 dpi
I certainly draw and paint a lot of fantasy fish these days... but when I was little I did a lot of ocean creatures, mostly whales and orcas. Woolly mammoths, I liked the arctic-biome and it's wildlife old and new.
I loved dinosaurs and Pokemon, but I don't remember drawing too many of them.
Thanks for sharing! Great to hear your early inspirations
I just found your channel through auto play, and I love your way of talking! It's really relaxing and inspiring. Amazing art, rendering, and nice advices to wrote down :)
Also this challenge looks fun, I'm not good at drawing sharks (yet), but I'm giving it a try :D
And as a child I was obsessed with dinosaurs and penguins, especially penguins, my room was decorated with them lol
Thank you so much. I'm glad you're going to give it a try. Welcome to the community
Love it! I’m all over this challenge!
Best of luck on the move… I just got done with one, so I know how challenging it can be in terms of logistics, and interrupting the artistic/creative groove.
Thanks Mike! Glad you're on board for this one.
Haha for me it was like dinosaurs, and fighter jets. Even to this day my creature designs feel sort of derivative of dinosaurs, its kind of hard to break away from actually when im trying to create something totally alien and unfamiliar. Like an artistic comfort zone or something😅
Right on - very cool inspirations
Wow, cool stuff! Wish tbe video was longer!
Good to know, I'll try a longer form talk next time.
Well, this challenge looks helpful, I will definitely participate in the next! Thank you for creating it
Any time!
I really like your videos in my opinion your concept art are awesome but I fell that you don’t get the atención you Earn
Oh thanks! I appreciate that.
Pog
🙃
Very cool ! On my way to my stylist ! ;)
Have fun!
Hello Hardy, how do i become a great artist? For the last year i have been slowly losing my excitement about the things that i have to learn, and instead they overwhelm me
I'm sorry to hear about that - I know how overwhelming it can all feel. My advice would be to focus on painting what you enjoy for now. Give yourself some easy wins, some paintings that will fill up that inspiration cup and give you confidence. Then take slow, incremental steps into harder things. Community is always helpful too.
